    1. Welcome to Poland!1.1 About Poland

Poland lies in the heart of Europe the geometric center of the continent is right here. Hereyou can find more or less everything: alpine mountains, wide beaches, clean lakes, deepforests, world-class historic monuments, and friendly people. The climate is temperate, andthe people warm and hospitable. Polish cities with a thousand-year history invite theirvisitors to encounters with culture, and Poland's villages and small-time towns offer theopportunity to get away from the bustle of modern life. And all this comes with a backdropof breathtaking natural landscapes, because Poland's greatest attraction is nature. Wild, untouched, more diverse than in most countries either in Europe or the world and, what's

    more, easily accessible.

1.2 History of PolandThe history of Poland begins as early as the 10th century. In the 14th century the countryentered a union with Lithuania, which lasted until the very end of the 18th century. Theunion made Poland one of the strongest states in Europe. After the death of the lastJagiellon king in 1569, Poland became an elective monarchy, a quasi-democratized state inthe era of the absolute monarchies all around Europe. The once powerful state gradually lostcompetitiveness against the stronger neighbors in the 17th and 18th century, and waspartitioned by the former Austria, Prussia and Russia. The idea of Polish independence was

kept alive through the 19th century, resulting in an uprising against the Tsar. Polandregained its independence after the First World War for two decades, but became the first tofall against the German and Soviet attack at the beginning of the Second World War. Manythousands Poles served in the armies of the Allied Forces. After the Second World WarPoland became a satellite state of the Soviet Union, under communist regime. The uprisingsin 1956 and 1968 were suppressed. In 1978 Karol Wojtya became Pope John Paul II. In1989, led by a reform movement called Solidarity, Poland became the first Eastern Europeanstate to break free of the Communism. Poland joined NATO on May 27, 1999 and theEuropean Union on May 1, 2004.

1.3 Weather in PolandPoland is situated in the Central Europe and the climate is mostly temperate throughout thecountry. Its oceanic in the north and west and becomes gradually warmer and continentalas one moves south and east. Winters are cold (average temperature around 3C in thenorthwest and -8C (17.6F) in the northeast. Summer is various, mostly it is nice andwarm here (about 20C or more), but sometimes we can expect little rainfalls or evenstorms. So prepare yourself for all these meteorological conditions!

During PM you could expect quite low temperatures(average -5C up to +10C ). It is veryhard to predict and it may vary every day. Therefore better check the weather forecastbefore starting trip.

The first written record of citys name dates back to 966 but archaeological findings provideevidence that a settlement had been established in the early Stone Age on the present siteof the Wawel Hill. From the 14th century it had been a place of royal coronations as well asa burial site of Polish royal families.

The later took place in the gothicWawel Cathedral. Also, here in 1364the oldest Polish university wasfounded. At first, it was called KrakowUniversity, later its name was changed

into the Jagiellonian University, which isstill famous for many brilliant scholars.

Our town has a unique atmosphere asa significant scientific and artisticcenter. In a variety of cafes and on thestreets you can easily meet intellectualsof various social and politicalbackgrounds. Nowadays Krakow is a

combination of an old city with its Royal Castle, countless of churches, museums, galleries, theaters, cabarets, operetta etc. and of a pretty modern place in which a lot of youths study. In other words, within an old city-centre there are over 300 of cafes and pubs, not tomention discos... So, enjoy!

    5.2 What to see

    THE MAIN MARKET SQUARE

It is the largest medieval square in Europe.Measuring approximately 200 metres by200 metres, it was laid out when the cityreceived its charter in 1257. Unlike theCloth Hall, the Town Hall and the town-houses that border the square, thechurches of St Mary and St Adalbert werebuilt before the charter and so are notaligned with the sides of the Main Market

Square. The most recent addition to thesquare is the monument of Adam Mickie-wicz, designed in 1898 by Teodor Rygier.

Today with the highest number of pubs, discos it is the most popular meeting place foryoung people. Looking at the restored colourful townhouses and mansions surrounding thesquare it is hard to believe that they are 500-600 years old. The Grey House (Szara Kamie-nica) at no. 6 deserves a closer look. Legend has it that it was donated by King Casimir theGreat to his mistress, Sarah. The Pod Krzysztofory Palace at no. 35 is noteworthy as kingsJohn Casimir, Micha Korybut Winiowiecki and Duke Jzef Poniatowski all stayed there atone time or other, and from it there is a wonderful panorama of the Main Market Squarewith St Marys Church, the Town Hall Tower, Adam Mickiewiczs monument and the ClothHall.

    WAWEL

Wawel Hill was the centre of the Wilanie statebefore the state of Poland was established. ThePiast dynasty settled here in the late 10th c. Thefirst king to have his coronation at Wawel wasLadislaus the Elbow-High in 1320. According toarchaeologists, in the Middle Ages there were asmany as seven Gothic churches on the hill andnumerous other buildings, which were laterdestroyed. The Rotunda of SS Felix andAdauctus and the Romanesque elements of thecathedral vaults are believed to be the oldest

landmark on the hill (ca. 950). Elements of oldstructures are displayed at the exhibition Wawelwhich is no more, along with a computerpresentation.

    KAZIMIERZ

Kazimierz was established by King Casimir (Kazimierz) the Great as a separate town. In thelate 15th c., an autonomous Jewish district was established here. Depopulated and dilapi-dated after the Second World War, the district is currently recovering its original splendour. It is the second largest complexof historic Jewish architecture after Josefov in Prague. Itshistoric centre is Wolnica Square but its social and cultural life focuses around the Plac Nowysquare and Szeroka street.

    8. Hidden point appendix According to definition survival guide should be USEFUL. Below you can find some interestinginformation and the algorithm of solving very common problem

Problem: box of beers, willingness to drink those beers, insufficient time.Resources: 2 elastic tubes and a funnel.

Solution:Fran - IntroductionDuring Presidents Meeting youll probably see people drinking beer using fran a lot. Wait a minute!

You dont know what fran is, do you? Fran is a device used for fast beer drinking. It is used mostlyby people who value their time because fran can save it a lot. With little practise you can drink litreof beer in around 2 seconds.

Fran I want to have one!If you read it that far I believe you fell in love with the device and you want to own one. In this paperwell guide you step by step in process of making the device, so you can bring your hand made franon PM.In order to make your own fran youll need:

    1. one 70 cm long reinforced elastic tube, diameter 1 inch2. one 10 cm long reinforced elastic tube, diameter inch3. one funnel the fancier the better

TIP: Try in the store if the parts fit together well.It can save you time and money on gluing it all together

When you look at pictures below you may think that what we are presenting here is imbutobut IT IS NOT AN IMBUTO! You cannot confuse that two things. Fran is used for drinking fixed or1 litre amounts of beer at once.

Building process brakes down to:1. Connecting funnel with long tube. When parts fits then its

really easy. You can use heat to seal the parts. When theydont fit that well you may need to use glue or duck tape.

    2. Connect long tube with short one the same way.3. When all parts are connected pour hot water into fran in or-

der to clean it before first use.
