“It’s nice and cold, haha. The atmosphere is really great. Coming from a football back-ground, the atmosphere is right up there.”

Amanda Devlin, Nelson.

“I’m a little bit worried about the emptiness of the stand down there. But the rest of it is great. It’s a great city and a great place to host more of this.”

Kendall Hodson, Stoke.

“I think it’s ready. I reckon it’s going to be a great way for peo-ple to see New Zealand and Nelson.”

Amira Elorf, Nelson.

“The facilities were great and the atmosphere was really cool.”

On Saturday night we went to Trafalgar Park to ask punters if they thought Nelson was

ready to host the Rugby World Cup.

This Week2

NEWS IN BRIEF• An increase of $800,000 is required to cover the escalating costs of insurance pre-miums for Nelson City Council assets in 2011-12 it announced last week. The in-crease in premiums is mainly due to the Christchurch earthquake.

• WIN WIN WIN: McCashin’s Brewery and Nelson Weekly are giving away tickets to the Rochdale Cider Ball this Saturday night. The old fashioned dance is a fantastic opportunity to dress up and get your danc-ing shoes on. To win the tickets either post “I wanna dance” on our Facebook page or email the phrase to [email protected]. First dozen will win.

• Extended public transport services are intended to begin operating by March 2012 to address concerns expressed by residents for many years over the poor state of our public transport, announced Nelson City Council. Also, an increase to $1 per hour in the main parking squares and the introduc-tion of a three hour parking limit in Wakatu Square will be reviewed after a year.

for wheelchair access but by in large we are very happy with how Saturday night panned out.”It was the first time the new temporary seating was used at the ground and Susan says getting fans quickly in and out of the

stand worked well. The traffic management plan also made it safer for fans leaving the stadium, she says.Tasman Rugby Union marketing manag-er Les Edwards says the match provided a perfect build up for the world cup al-though he was disappointed more tickets

didn’t sell. “The new East stand and em-bankment did look a treat on television. The new seating configuration was popu-lar with most although we did have our share of hiccups which is to be expected when trialling 13,000 extra seats and a new ticketing system for the first time. Most people were very understanding and we learnt a lot for the hosting of our three Rugby World Cup games later in the year”.

Museum project savedLocal donor steps up to fund glass plate project

Nelson Museum is celebrating a financial lifeline of ten’s of thousands of dollars thrown to one of its key projects by a local photography lover. The Glass Plate Negative Photographic Project, which features two of its images in Nelson Weekly each week, was launched last year with initial funding from the Tasman Bays Heritage Trust. But the funding was due to run out in July leav-ing the Museum with the prospect of having to leave the job half done.Nelson Provincial Museum CEO Peter Millward was delighted with the news of the funding, which came through late last week. “It is abso-lutely fantastic news, I am completely over the moon that the project can continue.”The project involves taking a high reso-lution image of the glass plate on a light box and capturing all available informa-tion about the im-age on a spreadsheet, the images are then made available online through the museum’s website. The project also involves re-hous-ing the regions’ pre-cious photographic collection in industry standard steel drawers that will offer greater protection than the open wooden shelv-ing that dates from the 1980s. So far almost 25,000 of the 120,000 glass plates have been processed.

The donor, who does not want to be indentified but is a local man with a keen interest in photog-raphy, has expressed the hope that there will be other people in the community with a similar de-sire to support this project. Nelson is recognised as having one of the best photographic records of its history of any province in the country. The value of the collection can be added to by people who offer further information about the images, such as names, dates and places. The project needs significant further support if the estimated $300,000 target is to be achieved. Anyone wishing to support this project should visit www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/fundraise/makedonation.aspx?id=18944.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US has awarded the all-new Hyundai Elan-tra a “top safety pick”, achieving the highest rat-ing of “Good” in all crash test categories includ-ing front, side, rollover and rear crash protection. In order to be considered for an IIHS “top safety pick,” a vehicle must also feature Electronic Stability Control (ESC). “Elantra safety has improved tremendously over the years with the vehicle now earning IIHS’ top safety distinction,” said David Zuby, the IIHS’ chief research officer. “The big things the au-tomakers have done to improve crashworthiness are designing better front crush zones to manage crash energy, stronger occupant compartments to limit intrusion, and stronger roofs to better pro-tect people in rollovers.” The all-new Elantra launches in New Zealand this

month. “Clearly this new model will be a winner here,” said the Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai New Zealand, Tom Ruddenklau.”

“This Elantra is pushing the compact category to offer in-novation, content and style - characteristics so often missing from the competition.” “It proves that incredible fuel economy as standard, tremen-dous luxury and convenience features, and cutting-edge de-

sign should be the expectation at an accessible price,” said Mr Ruddenklau. The new Elantra is much-awaited in the USA, al-ready winning a string of awards and accolades including: Residual Value Award – ALG; 2011 Best New Car - about.com; 2011 Best New Model – Kiplinger; Top 10 Cars to Look Forward to in 2011 - carsdirect.com.

Aussie owners of Nelson Mail and Leader exporting NZ jobs to IndiaThe Australian company that owns the Nelson Mail and the Leader is sacking New Zealand workers and sending their jobs to India, accord-ing to a report in the New Zealand Herald news-paper.Fairfax Media announced plans to axe 45 staff across its publications in New Zealand to creative advertising studios in India last week. EPMU senior national industry officer Paul Tolich expressed disappointment at the news in the Herald, which affects “day-to-day advertise-ments, often from templates, for insertion in metro and suburban papers owned by Fairfax Media in New Zealand.” The Nelson Mail and the Leaders are already us-ing offshore studios for some artwork. The cuts in staffing are being made in Fairfax

publications across the country. “It’s extremely disappointing that Fairfax has chosen to export these highly skilled jobs. At a time when there is high unemployment and insecurity, it’s the last thing these workers and their families need.“We know that the newspaper industry is facing challenges, and that they’re looking to reduce costs and grow revenue. But local advertising re-lies on workers spending in their local communi-ties. How can they spend when they don’t have jobs?” Paul was reported as saying. The Nelson Mail made significant cuts to its staff in 2009 in sub-editing, accounts and prepress departments, with the majority of the work for those departments now done from out of town “hubs” based in Hamilton and Christchurch as well as other centres.

It was dubbed the Race4Jace and the childhood friend of V8 super car driver Jason Richards says he would have loved it.Jason is fighting a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. Fun-draisers for his medical treat-

ment have been held around the globe and the event in Nelson on Saturday showed his home town is also right behind him. Tony Dyer, along with mates Nick Fowler and Brendan Grid-ley, organised the event which

in total raised $10,000 for Ja-son. Hundreds turned out to watch the Bathurst-style race and view the car show.Tony says he was stoked with the event. “We’re really chuffed, it couldn’t have gone better.”

After 180 rejected job applications Nelson man Jarad Hart had every right to get a bit despondent about finding employment. But far from getting down on him-self, 34 year-old Jarad says he was “lucky” to have support through three tough years as he received a torrent of rejection letters and in some cases, no response at all. All that changed yesterday though as Jarad started his dream job.He began searching for administra-tion work in 2008, an area he had experience in before the fixed two year contract he was on ended the same year. But he quickly realised he was far from the most qualified for the available positions. “My qualifications were older I guess and my CV just didn’t stack up so I wasn’t even making it through the first round.”As an epileptic, Jarad did have some restrictions but not enough to warrant 180 rejections he says. “My epilepsy doesn’t really affect my work; I think there were just a lot of other better-qualified candi-dates.”The 181st application was a charm though, despite it being far from his desired career. Jarad applied for a job with the Kahurangi Trust, which aims to help move people into employment, as the city’s litter

man. The trust holds the contract for the job which includes picking up litter in the city and cleaning graffiti. Jarad says the job was by no means a “giveaway”. “There were a lot of other people applying but getting through that interview pro-cess and getting the job made me feel good and gave me confidence.”For six months Jarad worked on the streets of Nelson and he says it was rewarding and improved his moral. “I felt good about my-self and people would always say ‘you’re doing a good job’ so that also made me feel good and helped my confidence.”Then Jarad heard – through Work-star which had been helping him through the three years of job hunting – that a job was avail-able in administration at Maitai School. “I was so excited and going through the interviews was great. I got along with them straight away and I was just hoping I’d done enough to get it.”He did, and yesterday started his new job, leaving behind his litter-cart. “I’m so lucky that I had all that support. I’m a bit sad to leave be-hind the litter cart, but really happy as well.”Trust manager Roger Thron says seeing Jarad move on is a fantastic result. “It’s what we aim and strive for and it’s great to see nice success stories like Jarad.

More than 40 local skaters hit the streets of Nelson on Sunday for In-ternational Go Skateboarding Day.The day marked a special signifi-cance for skateboarders all around the world to unite and skate streets and skateparks together. In Los Angeles, 5000 skateboarders rode the streets, but here in Nelson, a 40-strong group ranging from a 6 year-old girl to a 36 year-old man bombed down Collingwood St, through Trafalgar St, hitting nearby skateparks together. The event was organised by TRB’s owner Deanne Briggs and manager Matt Duncan.Deanne says they pushed for the event as the winter sets in, hoping to get kids more active as the lure of warm lounges with videogames in-creases. “We wanted to get kids out there being active in a positive way,” says Deanne. The response from the public was also positive with Collingwood St residents watching in amazement and people within the CBD cheer-ing and clapping as they made their way through Trafalgar St.Matt says it was “crazy” bombing down Collingwood St. “It was just really cool to see everyone skating down the street together and having such a good time. It’s such a differ-ent buzz skating through town.”

It may cost half a million dollars to upgrade the Dun Trail but Paul McArthur from Nelson City Council, right, reckons it will be a one in a mil-lion ride when it’s done. The Dun Trail is being upgraded as part of the National Cycleway, with $480,000 of government money being poured into the project, but it was a NCC funded bridge that has caused the most excitement so far. The 30 metre bridge was made in Levin and flown in by helicopter, dropped directly onto its piles. The bridge and new approach track and boardwalks cost $81,000 and were part of the Nelson City Council contribution towards the project. The rest of the development of the historic track is being done by local firm Nelmac. The trail loops between Brook Valley and the Maitai River Dam following the route of New Zealand’s first railway line. As part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail sys-tem’s “Great Rides”, it’s tipped to become a major draw card for visitors to Nelson. The cycleway project also includes an extensive upgrade and realignment of the trail to an intermediate rider level and provision of facilities such as toilets, signs and information boards. Jonathan Kennett, from the National Cycleway Project, stated on a recent trip: “Our site visit reinforced that you have a world-class cycle trail. It is a very exciting and... it that will attract large numbers of cycle tourists.”

Chch conference of hundreds heads to Nelson

Close to 800 young christians will be arriving in Nelson next month for Get Smart, the latest conference relocated from earthquake-ravaged Christchurch.Get Smart is four day conference for young christians aged 13-25+ from around the South Island. It will be held at Annesbrook Church on July 18-21 and featured 900 participants last year, although Get Smart director Craig Clark expected the number to decrease due to the situation in Christchurch. It was announced last Wednesday that it will be hitting the road for the first time in its 12 year history as Majestic House in Christchurch sits in the cordoned off area with the CBD.Craig says Nelson is a “brilliant location” and an “awesome area.” “It’s got an appeal to it that says ‘get away, time away, time to relax.’ Annesbrook Church is a phenomenal church, great location, awesome venue,” says Craig.Guests include Australian Idol winner Stan Walker, as well as speakers Phil Pringle, Matt Fielder, John Cameron. Annesbrook Church members are looking at accommodating 250 Christchurch residents free of cost. Senior leadership staff member Dave Crocker says the church is excited at the prospect of hosting the event, as well as help-ing out Christchurch. “It’d be one of the larg-est events like this that Annesbrook’s run. It’s pretty special for us,” says Dave.Get Smart is one of just a number of confer-ences and events coming to the region, high-lighted by the four Crusaders games, the Aus-tralia versus Russia Rugby World Cup clash and the South Island Masters Games.

Window comp in final weekLast minute touches are being made to windows throughout Nelson as judging gets set to begin for the ‘100 Days to Go’ window competition.Windows around the CBD are showing their creative support ahead of the Rugby World Cup by dressing up their windows in the colours of one of the four teams to play in Nelson during the Cup. diaryThe Harbour Master’s

Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

• This week saw the last of the expected fruit ships load and depart the port. The weather made for an interesting challenge of keeping the cargo dry however the team worked well during the infrequent dry spells and the cargo loaded successfully.• The Strait shipping Santa Regina continued her regular cargo delivery, we will be sorry to see the service end. • Five large container ships kept the stevedores busy for all hours over the past week, in some trying conditions. Another log ship loaded and left and was replaced by an equally big bulk carrier with fertilizer. • The big car carrier Transfuture 6 continued a regular delivery of vehicles and welcome to the Ocean Dawn a new addition to the Sealord Fishing fleet. • Twelve large fishing vessel movements around the port and several smaller ones kept the traffic volumes high.• This week I learned the new bylaws are one step closer to being adopted by NCC. We are being careful to get the detail in the bylaw ac-curate and clear. We believe we have the mix right to ensure business as usual for the Port environment and safe pleasurable boating for all. What is interesting to note is the progress of the new marina development.• I hope the trailer boat users have observed the three new parts of the walkway for them to temporarily park their boats whilst they park or retrieve their trailers. Your consideration is also requested for the yachts permanently berthed there. The area is a no wake zone, so do keep your speed to a minimum.

If in doubt – Don’t go out.

Maitai may get security camerasNelson City Council is using mobile security cameras at the Maitai Valley and Marsden Valley as a result of people continuing to dump green waste there.Team Leader Park’s Lindsay Barber says over the past few months several trailer loads of green waste has been dumped in the valley, with po-tentially damaging effects on the surrounding re-serve areas. “Often weeds in the green waste can spread to the surrounding areas which is a real problem for council.”To combat the problem Lindsay says council is now installing moveable security cameras which will be set up in various places to try and deter or catch those using the valley as a dumping ground.Under the Litter Act 1979 infringement fines of up to $5000 are possible to anyone successfully prosecuted dumping litter.

The Summit Rescue helicopter has made its name in the air but thanks to a local car dealer the trust that runs the helicopter is looking just as sharp on the road. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust is celebrating 20 Years operating the Sum-mit Rescue Helicopter throughout the region, air lifting thousands of people to safety. Helping the trust on the ground for the past three has been Nelson Bays Motor Group, donating the use of a brand new Nissan Navara each year. And last week the trust got its latest truck.Paula Muddle, marketing and communications manager, says having the support is fantastic. “It means that we can have our brand out there in the community which ensures the helicopter is

back at base, ready to respond to callouts. The Navara is a fantastic fit, when we’re on a search and rescue mission, we can tow our fuel tanker to the base of the SAR operations which means the helicopter doesn’t have to go back to base to refuel, this saves valuable search time”.Vern Walker, dealer principal at NBMG says when he was initially approached, it wasn’t a hard decision to make. “We’re committed to en-suring that people are safe both on and off the roads in the region. I’m a keen mountain biker and I know accidents do happen so it’s great to know we have the rescue service and this was something we were keen to be a part of ”.Motor vehicle accidents account for approxi-mately 10 per cent of the helicopters missions.

Youth recognised for volunteer work

Mitchell Chandler with his Youth Vol-unteer Award after last week’s ceremony. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Stoke’s Mitchell Chandler may only be 14, but the passionate teenager has already donated hundreds of volunteer hours to the community.Mitchell, and hundreds of other Nelson teens were congratulated last Thursday night for the time they give at the Nelson Tasman Youth Volunteer Awards. Mitchell is a Year 10 student at Nayland College and has spent the last several years campaigning for the protection of the environment. He and his fam-ily regularly travel up the Grampi-ans checking around 40 rat traps. These traps protect the birdlife and encourage more to come back to the Grampians. He has also organised tree plantings along the Railway Re-serve and given talks to local schools

about the environment. But this isn’t Mitchell’s only volunteering project, the teenager also gives his time to refereeing and coaching basketball. Mitchell says it’s great to see the large number of young people vol-unteering “because you don’t really hear about the people that do it and there are some amazing things being done.”The Nelson Tasman Youth Volun-teer Awards was jointly run by Vol-unteer Nelson, The New Hub and the Nelson City and Tasman Dis-trict Youth Councils and was able to celebrate the voluntary efforts of young people aged 12 to 25. Other special award winners were Rory East, Mathew Buckingham, Aaron Inwood and Nicholas Somerville.

A big focus in General Practice this year has been encouraging patients to quit smoking. We all know that smoking is harmful and that 1 in 2 smokers die of smoking related diseases such as emphysema, cancer and heart disease. What’s less well known is that the benefits of quitting start immediately and within 48-72 hours peoples breathing, taste and smell improves. By 1 year the risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker. As health professionals we rec-ognise that smoking is incredibly addictive and most people who quit require several attempts and this can be very discouraging. Although nicotine replacement therapy [patches, gum and loz-

enges] still remain first line treat-ment, there is now fully

funded medication available on prescription that can assist patients in their quest to stop smoking. Zyban [bupropion] and Champix [varenicline] help to reduce the desire and pleasure people get from smoking. These medications are prescribed as part of smoking cessation pro-grammes run through General Practice. Most nurses are trained ‘quit coaches’ and have consid-erable experience in supporting patients to stop smoking. Our local Primary Health Care or-ganisation [Nelson Bays Primary Health] also provides funding for many patients so there often isn’t a charge to see a nurse for smok-ing support. So if you are feeling like you want to stop smoking then call your General Practice and make an appointment to see a practice nurse. Smoking cessa-tion is the single best thing that you can do for your health!

cord your child’s learning and development journey, and are a permanent keepsake for you when your child moves on to school. We go on regular local walking excursions and bus trips to varying destinations and have a relationship with Tahunanui School. Recently we have been to Natureland, Richmond’s Indoor Sports stadium, The Tahuna model trains, a double decker bus ride and on a walking trip to the beach. We offer ECE for 3 & 4 year olds, and a low hour-ly fee. Call Sandra Jansen now on 548 6036 or pop in any time for a visit. We would love to meet and teach your child.

The Tahunanui Business Association represents the interests of many of the area’s businesses, including cafes, restaurants, specialty shops, retailers, accommodation providers, and a range of commercial businesses. It is actively involved with promoting and maintaining the wellbeing of Tahunanui, strongly representing our members to Council, ensuring that Tahunanui remains an attractive destination for visitors as well as to our local community and has a vi-brant and diverse range of businesses. Members have been active in endeavouring to protect Tahunanui from further degradation from the volume of traffic through its centre along Tahunanui Dr, planning for the future of Tahunanui, maintaining a clean and attractive beach and modellers pond, consulting on development of the Beach Reserve, and currently proposing an off-road-cycleway through Tahunanui to connect Rocks Rd with the Wakatu Dr and Tasman Loop cycleways.Following the Association’s strong representations, Council’s decision to ban free-dom camping from our reserves and roadsides is a great result for Tahuna where problems were experienced especially over the summer months. The Association endeavours to assist in maintaining and enhancing Tahunanui – an iconic asset for the city – and a great place to live and work.TBA welcomes new members – contact Ben Collis ([email protected]) or Tony Quick-fall ([email protected])

Shone & Shirley Funeral Directors has been established within Nelson for almost 150 years. What started as a small cabinetmaker and undertaker has gradually grown into a funeral home, that not only maintains traditional values but also recognises the need to be more flexible to meet the changes and demands of our community. This will become evident when we move into our new funeral home in July, as it will offer a brand new and fresh funeral environment.

Welcome to the second issue to Tahunanui Community Newslet-ter.The support of our local Businesses and the Nelson Weekly has made this newsletter possible and enabled Tahunanui to have a voice and inform the wider community about what is happening and available in this very unique suburb of Nelson. It is a wonderful opportunity for us all to have a say and our thanks and hopefully our support of the local businesses will be our way of ensuring we continue to have a voice. We want to have a representation from all organisations based in Tahunanui and to share your news so please contact us at the community centre and help us to promote you!Trish Duthie, Community Development Coordinator.

Coming Up in TahunaStepping Out In Tahunanui is back, this year on Sunday No-vember 6. Last year’s event went so well for a first time event. We had huge support from our local businesses that not only promoted the event through advertising but provided over 40 prizes to give out in our prize draw. Planning is underway for this year’s event I would like to hear from any sports group that would like to participate on the day. This is a true community event where the whole community plays a part in making this day a success.Mums & Bubs July 2011 (walk or run with your buggies)If you would like to join a social group of “Mums” with the aim to get fit and meet others then along to the Community Centre on a Thursday afternoon at 1.30pm starting July 14.

We have committed, enthusias-tic registered teachers, who have a passion for children. Ensuring a sense of belong-ing and well-being for your child. The same teachers work in all sessions. cord your child’s learning and development journey, and are a permanent keepsake for you when your child moves on to school.

The nomadic Crusaders of 2011 have ven-tured to Trafalgar Park four times this sea-son, but while the latest win may not have been as emotionally charged as February fixture, weeks after the killer earthquake in Christchurch and also a tribute to the Pike River Miners, it was by far the most important. The Crusaders shook off early rust to clin-ically dispose of the Sharks in the Super 15 quarter final in Nelson on Saturday night, in front of 12,000 fans facing a battle of their own – a bitterly cold winter night. The Crusaders put on a second half display to help warm the souls of red and black support-ers though, if not the fingers or noses.Second half tries to Kieran Read and Nelson boy Ben Franks drove home the 36-8 win after Sonny Bill Williams dotted down in the first half. Star first five Dan Carter kicked 18 points in total with replace-ment pivot Matt Berquist add-ing a solitary conversion to the score board. The win lifts the seven time Super rugby champions to a semi final in Cape Town, where awaiting them are the classy Stormers, which topped the South African conference. The Crusaders will take confidence in the fact they beat the Storm-ers on their home patch earlier this season and will have the added bonus of All Black skip-per Richie McCaw’s services. They will also be well-used to preparing on foreign soil – not playing one of its games in Christchurch this season, due to February’s earthquake.Usually restricted to watching the Crusaders in a pre-season

clash in Motueka, Nelson fans have been turning out in their thousands to watch the cream of New Zealand’s rugby talent, with more than 40,000 attending the four games the city has hosted.Although not at their traditional home, Trafalgar Park has welcomed the side with open arms this season and the city boasts strong ties with many of the players. Ben and Owen Franks are from Motueka, Wy-att Crocket went to Nelson College, Kahn Fotuali’i is a former Mako, Ryan Crotty was born in Nelson while Tom Marshall, Jonathan Poff, Quentin MacDonald, Joe Wheeler and Chris Jack are all Makos.

Stylish, elegant timber shutters have long been synonymous with homes at the top end of the market but in recent years they have become very affordable and popular in all styles of homes. Designed to succinctly control sunlight, shutters look stunning in contemporary minimalist style homes or town houses, beautiful on classic villas and character homes, and can transform simply designed houses. Whether you love the natural beauty of western red cedar shutters, or prefer the contemporary look of imported Basswood painted shutters, Window Treatments can cater to your needs. Roller Blinds are now leading the way in light control technology for your home or office. They have always been popular but with the recent advancement in intelligent fabric,

sophisticated hardware and control options including motorisation, roller blinds are now undoubtedly the most preferred window coverings across the market. Roller blinds can now be made with textured weaves, smooth minimalist plains, light-filtering screen, opaque and block-out fabrics. A new and innovative product to the market, Securo roller blinds are perfect for those rooms which require no light gaps such as theatre rooms or bedrooms. Securo can also be installed outside with clear PVC or screen fabric to provide wind and rain shelter to your BBQ or patio area. For outdoor areas Window Treatments manufactures Folding arm Awnings and has recently launched its motorised Terrazza awning which is perfect for proving wind and sun shelter to your pergola roof or skylight. Winter is the perfect time to think about your garden and make a plan, look at what areas you use and how you use them. Think if you’d like to change anything about your set-up. These are important questions to ask yourself when planning your garden. Every house and garden is different and needs to serve the owner. After that you can choose a style you like and what plants are suitable for that style. If this seems daunting and you can’t see past what is already there, Sabina from GardenAffairs Nelson would love to help.Maybe you’d like some fruit trees? Even if your garden is not very big you can train apple, pear or quince trees against a fence to give a nice effect; or plant smaller varieties of citrus or cherry trees in big planters.Edibles are very popular now and Sabina thinks deciduous fruit trees are such a bonus with their gorgeous blossom in spring, lush green leaves in summer and often autumn colour; and after a few years you will be rewarded with fruit. Before you buy, it is important to

decide what fruit you like to eat, where you can plant a tree and what your soil is like.Apart from fruit tree planting, it is also time to prune your roses soon. A rule of thumb is: hold your hand up as if you were holding a big grapefruit. Look at your fingers like the stems on your rose bush after pruning. They need space between them, then choose an outward-facing bud and cut on an angle. If you need help with any garden tasks or would like to redesign your garden give Sabina from GardenAffairs Nelson a call for a free quote: 03-5468511 or 021-1515088.

AND NEW HOME OF

Affordable heat transferand ventilation systemsOne of the most affordable ways to heat yourentire home efficiently is by installing a heattransfer system. How it works is that you havea solid-fuel source such as a wood burner in oneroom and the excess heat is pumped out andcirculated to other rooms in the house via ductsand fans in the ceiling.

It’s a great way of ensuring you use all the heatthat is generated in your home. The system’sthermostat also makes sure only excess heat isbeing transferred, keeping the source room at apleasant temperature all the time.

The systems are affordably priced and runat a very low cost, using a similar amountof electricity to a 100-watt light bulb. Heattransfer systems use an in-line fan and acousticducting so they run quietly and unobtrusively. They can be fitted in new and existing homes.

The Vent Shop sells and installs heat transfersystems, as well as positive pressure and heatrecovery ventilation systems. They offer in-home consultations and quotes, and also sellDIY kits. Give them a call and find out howaffordable it can be to make your home so muchwarmer this winter.

The Vent Shop is now the new home ofmoistureMASTER controlled ventilation systems. One system can’t fit all homes and fix all problems which iswhy the moistureMASTER is such a great solution for makingyour home warm, dry and healthier. Customised to suitindividual homes, problems and budgets, moistureMASTERis guaranteed to work efficiently.

Made in New Zealand using top-grade German componentry, moistureMASTER controlled ventilation systems have been aroundsince 1998. Guaranteed with a five year warranty, moistureMASTERsystems replace moist air in the home with drier, warm filteredair, control condensation and help eliminate mould, mildew andodours at the same time as saving money on heating, and making ahealthier environment for allergy and asthma sufferers.

moistureMASTER is anaffordable market leaderincorporating the latestin European ventilationtechnology and modulardesign, and offeringnumerous ‘add ons’ thatare unique to its system. These include heattransfer kits, summerventilation kits, heaters,Pure Air modules, multiple fan systems andnumerous other configurations to be added at any stage. In manycases the electronics that control the systems will not require anyupgrades or expense when modular additions are made.

Riders from secondary schools throughout Nelson and Marlborough competed at the event. The top performer from Nelson was Natalie Coles of Nelson College for Girls. Clubs prepare for the real battle of Trafalgar

Nelson captain Andrew Goodman.

The region’s rising female footballers are so good they are taking on the boys, and winning. The Nelson Suburbs Blue Crew is an all girl football team competing in the Robbie’s Bar & Bistro NBF un-der-17 Red Division, against all boys teams, in order to develop further as players.Every corner of the Nelson second-ary school system is represented in the team with members also com-peting for their college on Sundays in the Women’s Top of the South League. Nelson College for Girls and Waimea College form the bulk of the squad with five players each in the se-

lection, Nelson Suburbs contributes two with one each from the Nayland College and Garin College first XIs.When the girls pushed the idea of the team to coach Cary Hamson and his wife Sandy, the pair were so keen, they wondered why it hadn’t hap-pened earlier. “It’s a fantastic idea. We should have done this years ago,” says team manager Sandy.Cary and Sandy were joined by Si-mon Gordon in the coaching staff and the side aligned with Nelson Suburbs for its debut season. The girls admit every other team in the grade underestimates their talents, despite playing in women’s

age-grade representative sides. “They think this is going to be easy. They say sorry when they knock us over,” says Megan Hodgson, 18.But Sandy reckons the girls get ac-cused of being the more pushy ones on the field. “The guys go in pretty hard, they realize pretty soon that they’re up for it.”They have won a couple of games and drawn one. But the primary focus for the side is developing a sharper, more physical game. “We’ve watched them grow in to really good footballers. When they go back to play in the rep stuff, they’re on their game, they are quicker, they are stronger.”

Female footballers taking it to the boys

Nelson’s premier club rugby competition will crown a new king this Saturday.Minor premiers Wakatu Marist will square off against the Galbraith Nelson juggernaut that walked over defending champions Ac-cessman Stoke 44-6, at Trafalgar Park this Saturday. But the key duel in the real battle of Tra-falgar Park might go further than the game itself with Marist first five-eighth James Proctor, the Car Company division one’s leading point scorer and Nelson’s in-form James Marshall - who scored five times in two games - playing for a championship trophy and the inside running for the Tas-man Makos number ten jersey, despite the latter excelling in the inside center role.

Nelson have been buoyed by the return of James and Crusaders wider training squad member Steve Alfed. The pair, along with captain Andrew Goodman, Kim Bateman and Robbie Malneek form the most fierce back division in the league. Forwards Shane Christie and Willis Scott have also im-pressed late in the season.Hooker Francis Smith, Tasman hopeful Dan Squire and bustling loose forward Mark Bright will be the key forwards for Marist while former Highlander Lucky Mulipola is always a threat on attack.Kickoff is at 3pm. Entry is $5 for adults, $2 for students and pensioners and chil-dren under five years-old are free. Entrance money goes towards JAB rugby.

When an opportunity presents itself you have two choices. Entering the Press Cup was always going to be a big challenge but the Nayland College Rugby Club also realised that this was our opportunity for our young men to participate in top level rugby - something that was a long term goal for this club. This team has climbed some big mountains this season

and we are all proud of the way in which they have never given up trying, in the way that they have represented Nayland College and in the way that they have shown loyalty and commitment to each other. All players have shown personal growth in their rugby skills that probably would not have happened to the same extent if they were not playing in the Press Cup.

To have a win in your first year in Press Cup is something to celebrate and the season is not over yet. Already a hard working group is planning towards next year with team personnel in place, a fund-raising plan under development and an off-season training programme for the players.Nayland College would like to thank all its supporters.

Angus Riley’s future might be the only thing bigger than he is. The 15 year-old Nayland Col-lege center has been selected in the Emerging Junior Tall Blacks basketball team which is hoping to qualify for the FIBA Under-17 World Championship for the first time in its history.Although the two meter big man has been a regular in Nelson age-grade representatives sides, his selection for the FIBA Oceania Under-17 Championship came as a “pretty big surprise” after being named as a reserve in the under-16 squad following a five month layoff with a fractured leg, an injury he received playing for the New Zealand Koru under-16 team. “I just jumped landed and it snapped. It was pretty bad,” says Angus.Angus says the five months off the court were hard. The majority of the time was spent visiting the physiotherapist, making sure he didn’t rush back to the basketball

court. But when he was able to prac-tice his shooting, it was still frustrating. “You’d do shooting but you couldn’t really do anything be-cause you couldn’t run after the ball.”But with his injury be-hind him, Angus is fo-cussed on getting one over his Australian coun-terparts to qualify for Lithuania next year.

It was definitely a game of two halves when Nayland College A met Motueka High School A in a Grade 1 game at Saxton Stadium.Although Motueka had taken the honours 42-27 in their previous encounter, Nayland looked the stronger, even though they were without their inspirational leader Michaela Matenga who was ab-sent due to Tasman Un-der-19 commitments in Dunedin. The diminutive Brianna Joyes relished the oppor-tunity to don Michaela’s C bib and was a hard working pivotal link through court. She displayed a great un-derstanding with her goal shoot, Deanna Hunter, to deliver some superb long feeds. Brianna hit the edge for the optimum feeding position and had great balance as she teetered on the circle edge.Nayland won the first quarter 9–6. However, Motueka worked their way into the game to tie the second period 8 apiece, cour-tesy of a flawless shooting perfor-mance by Natasha Wilkinson.Nayland’s Sara Reidie was an ab-

solute demon on defence, the 15 year-old hunted for every scrap of ball to pull in an astonishing ten well timed intercepts and numerous deflections. Sara read the game well and had an excep-tional 9 on defence which ena-bled her to get tip ball. Abby Pes-tell also contributed well at goal keep to gain valuable ball.

The second half totally belonged to Motueka, as Nayland’s possession all but dried up. Cen-tre, Siobhan Delany was the stabilising influence through the court while

wing defence, Claire Martin Hamilton worked hard to apply pressure on the circle edge.Goal attack, Keilamarita Pauri Lane lifted the bar considerably in the second half as she found her range to net some nice shots. She was also strong on the re-bound to enable herself a second opportunity.Natasha Wilkinson had her radar well and truly on as she returned the commendable statistics of 21 from 25 in the 30–23 win.

Nayland A falls to Motueka High

The Escape from Tane’s Forest trail running course was always going to be a challenge, nothing less is expected from Nelson Events, and their latest crea-tion certainly passed the test on Saturday.Women’s winner Fleur Lattimore was ecstatic after she crossed the finish line. “That’s the best trail run course I’ve ever competed over,” she commented, “looping inside the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary was so special – Nelsonians are spoilt to have such an area on their doorstep.” She finished eighth overall and 18 minutes behind long course winner Graeme Tayor who led all home in 2hrs 15mins 17sec. His volunteer work for the Sanctuary certainly gave him inside knowledge of the tracks and terrain of Nelson’s for-mer waterworks site but his fleet footwork around the 25kms was outstanding. Behind at Fringed Hill he took control before Third House and rarely had to look back especially once he was into ‘home territory’ in what will be the Sanc-tuary confines.Chris Burr chased hard finishing just over a minute behind with Matt Reedy making up a Nelson trifecta.Fleur meanwhile was all class. Her 2hrs 33mins 20sec back to Sanctu-

ary HQ is a benchmark that the best in New Zea-land will struggle to eclipse; next year will certainly create some competition.Jane Reedy and Coast to Coast champion, Sophie Hart, were separated by less than a minute for sec-ond and third respectively claiming another Nelson trifecta with Jane finishing in the top ten.The short course proved popular with 55 finishing their off-road adventure full of smiles, especially winner Gus Shirley of Nelson.

NEW WORLDSTOKE

Season over for division one, focus now on Women and RedsIt’s the end of the road for Accessman Stoke. The two-time defending champions were bundled out of the Car Company division one semi-finals by Gal-braith Nelson 44-6, after an injury plagued season. But with the Stoke Women’s team flying high in first place and the Stoke Reds putting in some strong per-formances, the club can still eye some silverware.Inspirational skipper Shaun Begg struck two penalties in the defeat at Neale Park on Saturday, but the side struggled to gain any fluidity on attack.Stoke’s forwards competed well as the side only trailed 16-3 at halftime, but it was the backline that failed to fire. Although most of the credit sits with a classy Nel-son backline bubbling with Tasman Makos playmak-ers. James Marshall was the biggest threat last week, and Stoke struggled to contain him again.Tevita Koloamatangi sat out the final game of the sea-son, which made a huge difference. Shaun says Tevita was easily player of the year for Stoke. “When he’s out there it’s like having three more guys on the paddock. He’d by my most oustanding player of the year along with Sione [Holani] and Jack [Umaga].”With the numerous injuries and the new coaching staff arriving, Shaun says he can give the season a pass mark, but was disappointed not to go one step further.“It’s obviously not where we wanted to finish. I’ve never had a season like this with the amount of inju-ries we’ve had. You can’t dwell on that too much. The positive thing is we’ve blooded a lot of young fellas for next year. With the new coaches it was always go-ing to be different. Nelson are a bloody good side and Marist, well they’ve got talent everywhere, they’re two bloody good teams, to finish third wasn’t too bad, when you take in the injuries and the new personnel.”One of the many younger players to stamp their mark during the season was blindside John Duff. His determination and willingness made him one of the key performers throughtout the year. “He’d never give up. As the season got on he got better and better.”Stoke pride themselves on picking local players, many of them have come from the Nayland College system. But it’s been more than five years since two players have made the step up to senior rugby with as much ease as Brett Ferguson and Nick Max have. Shaun and Sione were amongst a group of Nayland College players in 2005 to make the standard.“Since that there hasn’t been anyone who has made that big step.”Shaun admits the first five-eighth position will be the main fo-cus during the offseason. Cody Christensen showed promise early in the piece but like many, injury pulled the curtain on his season. Former Nelson Bays age-grade represenative Callum Webber was another used in the position, before Jack shifted in

to the playmaker role. “They didn’t get enough time to get used to that position. I was going to go in to first five, but then with Cody getting injured, we couldn’t get that combination going. Jack is a very talented player. You put him anywhere and he’ll play well.” But Shaun says the team needs Jack and Sione to play as twin strike centers. With the amount of players used in the squad, the depth will have increased ten fold by the time next season rolls along, and Shaun says the team will be back to reclaim its title.Sione Holani finished the top try scorer with ten tries. Jack has secured a Tasman Makos contract for the coming season but Tevita, Sione, Shaun and Jared Aberhart will have hoped the final matches of the seaosn were enough to stake their claims.Shaun missed out on a Tasman contract last season but was involved in the Buccaneers match against Canterbury in Kaik-oura last week. He says he’s done everything he could have this season and now it’s up to the coaches. “I’ve been pretty happy with the way I’ve gone. It’s been a difficult season and we’ve grown each week, but injuries just took its tole on the club.”Stoke Women and Stoke Reds play this weekend.
