WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE ELEMENT OF THE DESIGN?

We were all really excited with the dark stained interior doors and black handles. We had wanted to explore this combination for some time, we really love the results!

I believe the spatial design, in terms of the relationship between areas within the apartments, are a testament to how zoning can enhance any space. I particularly like the continuation of the flooring throughout, we can then introduce warm finishes such as rugs and soft furnishings to personalise and warm the space.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST DESIGN CHALLENGE?

The redevelopment of an existing building is an exciting opportunity. With 53 apartments over seven floors, we had to ensure all the apartment layouts were equally successful in terms of both design and function.

From conceptual sketches through to finished proposals, working with the professional teams to make sure that the design is executed correctly and ensuring the finished result is as true to the design intent as possible. This is always my hardest challenge, when working in this environment we often have the ability to make improvements.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT OR MATERIAL?

I love the metro tiles used in the bathrooms, they are a great introduction of an urban material repurposed into a modern environment.

In the communal entrance area we used some feature light fittings by Naomi Paul. I have wanted to use these for some time since I first saw them, so it is lovely to be finally working with her. Naomi produces stunning handmade artisan lights from her East London studio, they create a strong design statement as you walk in to the development to set the scene.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE INVOLVED IN THE DESIGN OF 28 BALDWIN STREET?

The majority of the WN Interiors team have been involved in the design of 28 Baldwin Street from the initial conceptual stage.

We’ve liaised with various professional teams from the outset, which has involved all of us, some 10 people in total.

WHICH PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON NEXT?

My next challenge is the design and fit out of two serviced residential developments in the Dorset area. One is a high-end development with some fantastic penthouses and amazing views, the other is in a quaint town with some of the biggest communal areas I’ve seen in a development of this type. Both pose different challenges, and I’m looking forward to them.

I am involved in the design of one of the largest penthouses on the south coast with an amazing roof terrace, as well as a fantastic project in southern Spain, which allows us to work with new materials more suited to a warmer climate, which is really exciting.

OUT AND ABOUT IN BRISTOLBristol provides all the benefits of city centre living with a twist of unique character and identity

From its friendly people and fantastic music scene to its vibrant harbourside, green spaces and buzzing centre, Bristol is the perfect size, offering all the excitement of a big city packed into an area you can easily explore on foot or by bike.

Culture and the arts: From the Royal West of England Academy (RWA), Spike Island and Arnolfini to numerous smaller gal-leries, Bristol has a thriving art scene, often incorporating elements of the unexpected. Banksy’s unannounced exhibition at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery made world headlines, and temporary galleries have a habit of springing up overnight in disused shop spaces, thanks to an initiative by Bristol City Council.

Festivals – one of many: The Bristol Harbour Festival, which marked its 40th anniversary in 2011, began as a celebration of the city’s maritime heritage, but now encompasses much more. Besides the hundreds of sailing boats, tall ships and old-time craft that gather in the floating harbour, there are music stages, a dance stage, street theatre, water displays, food stalls, and other sundry attractions, all on or near the Harbourside.

Green City: Clifton Down and Durdham Down are the ‘lungs’ of the city, covering over 400 acres of parkland and green space on the north side of Bristol. They’re a magnet for kite flyers, joggers and sports teams, with plenty of room left over for picnics and games of rounders.

Places – a few favourites (The Harbourside) Bars, cafés, museums and footpaths line the Harbourside in Bristol’s city centre, which is a mecca for late-night revellers. On the river itself are floating restaurants, water taxis, and an abundance of smaller craft. (Millennium Square) One of the centre pieces of the redeveloped Harbourside, Millennium Square forms part of the At-Bristol complex but stands on its own as an attractive public space. Several pieces of public art grace this piazza, including several large water sculptures and statues of Bristol legends such as Cary Grant and William Tyndale. Dominating the space is the At-Bristol Planetarium, a giant mirrored sphere. The large plasma screen often shows sporting events and live arts performances.

The city centre A short walk down Baldwin Street brings you to College Green, Bristol Cathedral, and the centre. Broadmead and Cabot Circus offer a comprehensive shopping experience, and the Bristol Hippodrome presents touring productions of West End hits all year round.
