2018 Annual International Career & College Counseling (IC3) Conference | 29-30 August 2018 | New Delhi 1

Dear Friends,

On behalf of all the members on the various IC3 committees, I welcome you to New Delhi for the third edition of the Annual IC3 Conference. Just as we had envisioned, what began in 2016 as a conference has grown into a movement today. The IC3 Movement represents giving, service, access, inclusion, diversity, innovation and sustenance. We were always clear that we did not want to be host one glamorous conference, but to bring change on the ground – inside schools – and we are progressing rapidly on this path.

We have made progress on all three fronts – 1. Sensitizing our community on the criticality and need of career and college counseling function in schools, 2. Glamorising the profession so enough young people choose teaching and counseling, and 3. Developing human resources that will help run counseling departments in schools.

In 2018, through the IC3 Regional Forums, the IC3 committees ramped up their effort for inclusion and access. We held 18 IC3 Regional Forums (compared to nine IC3 Regional Forums in 2017) across 14 cities in India and South Asia, three cities in South East Asia and one in the Middle East. The response from the community has been overwhelming with host schools opening their gates and hearts to host the local principals, teachers, counselors and the visiting university guests for an entire day. This momentum will continue in 2019 with 30 IC3 Regional Forums from January through May.

The launch of the IC3 Institute in 2018 is another important milestone in our journey to help train career and college counselors. A one-year certificate program is now available to aspiring counselors at NO cost. We are grateful to our university partners and sponsors for supporting this initiative which is in the early stages of our 15-year plan to positively impact 175,000+ high schools in the region.

2018 has also been a year of consolidation and I am happy to share that the new website of the IC3 Movement has been launched with the three key IC3 constituents – the Annual IC3 Conference, the IC3 Regional Forums and the IC3 Institute. This year, the Annual IC3 Conference has grown to over 700 attendees from 25+ countries. We have an exciting conference planned with 40+ sessions and adequate opportunities to network with educators from around the world. You can also enjoy all the special performances and entertainment that our host schools’ students have planned for you.

Finally, all of this progress would not have been possible without the countless hours spent by dozens of volunteers on IC3 committees, in conducting outreach, planning, evaluating content and hosting events. If you see a person with the “COMMITTEE MEMBER” (sky blue color) ribbon on their lanyard, do take a moment to thank them for making a difference. I would also encourage you to stop by the IC3 Pavilion to find out how you can get involved with the IC3 Movement.

As we say in the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, “Atithi Devo Bhava”, i.e. “Guest is God”. We truly appreciate your presence at the Annual IC3 Conference and welcome you to a week full of learning, networking and sharing.

In gratitude,Warmly,

Ganesh KohliIC3 Conference Chair

Inauguration +keynote

Keynote Address: Clear and present danger in a digital world: Knowledge dilution and competing with machines/AI for jobsActive misinformation is growing and spreading faster than ever on the Internet. Unfortunately, current search engine and social algorithms are not yet advanced enough to differentiate between plausible and credible information. With most people sticking to the first few results and walking away with “an” answer, which may not be true, puts knowledge evolution and human progress at risk. Relevant (which is what search and social engines focus on) isn’t reliable (trusted

and verified). Teachers (parents, librarians, mentors), publishers (who abide by the journalistic ethics code: fair, accurate, thorough) and technology (make it easier for people to weed out questionable information) have to play an active role to stem this epidemic of knowledge dilution and ensure the evolution of knowledge and human progress.

Let us work together to keep the knowledge foundation strong and improve our critical thinking skills, which along with creativity and interpersonal skills might be our last advantages over machines. We are building machines that are faster and more efficient than humans, so let us not lose our edge.

Counting on you educators and influencers to change the course.

Keynote Speaker: Karthik Krishnan, Global Chief Executive Officer, Britannica Group, U.S.Karthik grew up in a home (both his parents were educators) that was a center of knowledge and transformation. From his parents he developed early on a love for learning, and happiness in enabling and seeing people succeed. He firmly believes in the transformative power of education and the need to transform education globally to meet the needs of the new world. He is currently the Global CEO of Britannica Group of companies (Britannica, Merriam-Webster, Britannica Knowledge Systems, and Melingo) and an adjunct Professor at New York University

— Stern Business School. He serves on the board of Urban Upbound, an organization focused on transforming the lives of people in public housing in New York City through job training, financial fitness, and college access programs. He has been involved in a number of transformative initiatives including doubling India’s agricultural production, transforming Harlem (New York City) into a vibrant business community and tourist destination, and establishing New York University (Stern Business School) as the pioneer and top destination for entertainment, media and technology specialization.

How to Effectively Address Aspirations and Anxieties of Students in the Changing Global Economy9:00am–10:00am Jehangir 2In the process of course selection, individuals are heavily influenced by various external factors such as the global economy that is requiring people with specialist knowledge and new skills. The designing of programmes is influenced by studies on employer requirements which could result in a win-win situation for both students and employers. Higher educational institutions need to be more strategic about addressing this situation. Institutions like the University of Portsmouth promote several niche programmes in India by closely monitoring the social, economic and labour market trends. The aim of this presentation is to underline the need to adopt a more rigorous approach to understand student needs which would enable the design of programmes.

Panellists will discuss the differences between placements, internships, sandwich courses and mentoring schemes and how these experiences upskill students for their future careers. The logistics of working both during and after studying in the U.K. will be explored, including visa implications, maintaining a healthy work/study balance, and routes into working in the U.K. post-graduation. Evolution of Indian Higher Education9:00am–10:00am RoshanaraIndia, one of the largest higher education systems in the world, has more than 35 million students enrolled in about 864 universities and 35,539 colleges. It has seen a dramatic growth in the past decade and is ready for more in the coming years as it will have one of the world’s largest graduate talent pipelines in the world. By 2030, it is estimated that India’s higher education will emerge as the single largest provider of global talent, with one in four graduates in the world being a product of the Indian higher education system. The past two decades have seen a lot of positive reforms and in this changing landscape the entrance of private universities has been the game changer, bringing in innovative approaches in higher education. Internationalization of higher education will be critical to developing academic standards and research capabilities.

Embracing the Future: What Happens If the Future Does Not Embrace Us?1:00pm–2:00pm MumtazStudents face a potential multitude of different futures, none of which are easy to embrace, let alone control. Even those with clear visions of their own and society’s future can be wrong-footed by unpredictable advances in technology, sudden social change and economic vicissitudes. Are there certain tools that students can be equipped with to deal with the uncertainties of the future? What are these 21st century skill sets or core competencies that they will need

in order to survive and flourish? Whose responsibility is it to ensure these are successfully cascaded? Is it schools, colleges, the government or others?

The reasons for use range from assessing soft skills, reducing fraud, learning more about extracurricular activities, and evaluating fit. How should applicants from India see an interview as fitting into their application process? What are the differences between interviews conducted by admission officers, alumni, and third parties? How should a student prepare for an interview? What are the strategies for making the most of an interview opportunity? Flexible Standardized Testing Policies in U.S. University Admissions2:30pm–3:30pm Jehangir 2The underlying value and equity of standardized testing requirements in American university admissions have long been debated. Although the majority of U.S. institutions continue to require results from traditional standardized tests, namely the SAT and ACT, an increasing number of institutions have adopted more flexible admission requirements. As more institutions espouse holistic admission practices, an increasing number of applicants and their families will be seeking specific guidance from college counselors and admission professionals. This session seeks to facilitate dialogue surrounding the evolution of flexible testing policies with the goal of preparing school counselors to best advise their students. Additionally, this session will allow university delegates to share best practices for admissions review.

Guidance for the Grey Areas2:30pm–3:30pm RoshanaraIn our profession, school counselors and admission professionals alike face situations that range from questionable to downright shady. The Code of Ethics of Professional Practices from the International Association of College and Admission Counselors gives guidance for best practice in the industry and holds member institutions accountable, protecting students from unethical recruitment practices and shielding higher education institutions from unfair competition. This session will take a case study approach to familiarizing participants with the code of ethics, for sharing with colleagues, students and parents. Walk away with tools for what to do the next time you are faced with an ethical dilemma in your work.

Internships: Bridging the Gap Between High Schools and Industry8:30am–9:30am RoshanaraAt its core, IC3 is about counseling, but not only college counseling. It also encompasses career counseling. It is important for counselors to equip students with the skill set necessary to explore career options. At the university level, industry often partners closely with institutions, providing students with helpful hands-on experiences such as internships and co-ops. Unfortunately, industry has characteristically played a minimal role in a student’s growth and career exploration during the high school phase. This session aims to explore ways to bridge the gap between high schools and industry, providing data that will be beneficial for bringing together high school, university and industry attendees for a collaborative dialogue to bring about change; the end goal being to make hands-on career exploration accessible to high school students.

Session 5Preparing Students for the Unpredictability of Careers in the Digital Era10:00am–11:00am AlamgirA recent Ernst & Young study found that by 2022, 9% of workers will be in jobs that do not exist today. Breakneck technological advances have heightened uncertainty about the employment scenario of the future, and the unprecedented pace of “creative destruction” poses many challenges and questions. In India, which is poised demographically like never before, having strategies in place for Generation Y to thrive in this uncertain future assumes significantly greater import. This session will set this context in greater detail, discuss the careers that seem to be on an upward trajectory, and outline some strategies and choices which could better prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s “real world”.
