PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY Students need to put consistent effort into their school work and pursuits during their adolescent years. Often students start with great aspirations and along the way they can lose their keenness and enthusiasm. I found a brief article which may be of use to students as a piece of advice as they try to cope with the times when they may feel like giving up on their goals. I encourage parents to discuss this with their sons and daughters and share their experience in this regard. It is very applicable at the moment as we are five weeks into Term 2, results are coming back from exams and assessments, and our Year 12 students continue working through course content with a constant flow of tasks from which they receive feedback.

Lapse or relapse? Have you started an exercise programme and then one morning couldn’t be bothered getting out of bed so didn’t carry on? Or got a low mark in a test so gave up on that subject? How often have you started out on achieving a long-term goal and then given up before you get there? Giving up appears to be part of human nature but some people overcome obstacles and carry on. What makes the difference? Psychiatrists have studied this problem and distinguish between a lapse and a relapse. A lapse is a slip or mistake. A relapse is a return to old habits. The psychiatrists think an occasional lapse is an important part of the journey towards your long-term goal. Learning to cope with a temporary setback helps to reinforce your determination and ability to succeed. The key is to take immediate action when lapse occurs. Failed a test? Go back to your books and study that topic again so you do better the next time. Once you understand the difference between a lapse – a temporary setback – you can avoid a relapse, the total collapse of your goal. The occasional failure is part of the road to success.

YEAR 12 NEWS

INVITATION FOR PARENTS TO ATTEND SEMESTER 1 AWARDS WEDNESDAY, 1ST JUNE Parents are cordially invited to the presentation of subject Academic Achievement, Academic Application; and Exemplary Attendance Awards in the Lochinvar Centre (senior MPC) from around 2.30p.m. until 3.15p.m. with an afternoon tea to follow. These awards acknowledge those students who have applied themselves with diligence and/or have achieved excellent results in their chosen subjects; as well we recognising those students who have hardly missed any of their lessons. The semester one reports were issued to students last Tuesday – subject awards are clearly indicated on these reports. POST RETREAT AND SEMESTER 1 REPORTS At our year meeting on Wednesday, I discussed what lay ahead for the Year 12 students. Most subjects have about 60% of assessments still to come. The HSC Trials are about 10 weeks away (1st August) and about 20 weeks to the actual HSC (13th October). There is still more than enough time to implement changes that can improve overall performance as well as stress levels. For some students, the simple message is that good results don’t happen without consistent application both in and out of class. Others are placing too much pressure and expectation on themselves, and need to sit back and realise that no-one expects perfection. Others might need to change the way they approach their studies if their current efforts don’t seem to be paying dividends (“work smarter, not harder”). CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING YEAR 12 STUDENTS Lucie Williams competed in the NSWCCC diving competition at Homebush in Sydney on 29th April, coming second on both springboard and platform. On 6th May at Homebush, she again competed in the All Schools’ platform and springboard and was selected for the Nationals for both events. She will now travel to Lightning Ridge later in the year to compete at the Nationals, and we wish her every success. Jackson Jubelin recently competed in the the last major school golf competition for the year, All Schools’ golf tournament. Jackson had a great first round but then fell off the pace. Jackson has had a fantastic couple of years in his chosen sport; earlier in the year achieving a State Blue. Max Lower was selected to compete in the top representative levels recently in AFL, playing against and defeating teams from Tasmania and the Northern Territory. I’m sure Max’s expertise will be welcomed by the College AFL team who are about to play their next knockout match. The team under coach, Mr Adam Kelly, has been training hard to maintain their competitive edge.

At this stage she is right up there with the best in the State. STUDENT PROFILES It is great to be able to acknowledge the achievements and community service contributions that students make. However, we need to be aware of these so that they can be recognised in newsletters, year meetings, Pastoral Care report comments and College references. The mechanism to collect this information is via the Student Profile sheets that students update on a regular basis in their Pastoral Care classes. EXAMS AND ASSESSMENTS As we come to the conclusion of our exam week, Year 10 are to be congratulated on how they have conducted themselves. Exemplary behaviour is expected from our leaders of the junior campus. Should a student have missed an exam or assessment they are reminded to re-visit the Year 10 Assessment Policy handbook that was distributed at the start of the year. YEAR 9 NEWS

SEMESTER 1 Exam week is over, however, some subjects may have ongoing assessments or exams which did not fall within the exam period. While exams do contribute to the student’s semester one report, it is not the end point in terms of their reporting timeline. Students need to remain focused and ensure they work up until the final day of this term. UNIFORM The majority of students are wearing their uniform perfectly and should be commended on their constant effort in this department. Some students are beginning to wear their sports uniform on a regular basis, wear extra earrings and other accessories. Students need to be mindful of their attire from head to toe and make any of the necessary adjustments so this does not become an issue. Glen Littler Year 9 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 7 NEWS EXAMS Mid-year exams are done and dusted! For those students who missed an exam they are repeated in Week 6 (next week). I would like to congratulate Year 7 students on their efforts during exam week; it was pleasing to see students maintain appropriate standards. MCCENTRAL – LIBRARY CONNECT NEWS SYDNEY WRITERS’ FESTIVAL Fifteen students attended the Sydney Writers’ Festival Secondary School Day last week. Students listened to four inspirational writers – John Boyne, Michael Grant, Vikki Wakefield and Claire Zorn. They spoke about the importance of both world and personal history to their writing. Each of the writers shared their background and childhood and how this prepared them to work towards their writing careers. Wakefield, Zorn and Grant all had difficult aspects to their childhoods; they were not deemed to be successful at school. One was a dyslexic student, another a high school drop-out and a Higher School Certificate failure. These authors were creative and successful despite not achieving in the “usual” sense at school. The authors were generous with their time answering questions and signing copies of their books. Our students had a wonderful day. Some student thoughts - The Sydney Writers’ Festival was an amazing event, both entertaining and educational, I especially loved listening to what the authors' early lives were like. As I listened to them, I felt as though I was reading a good book, there were sad and heart-wrenching stories, some humorous relief and even romantic parts. I would certainly love to go again next year. Nat Francis Thank you so much for an amazing day yesterday I loved it and I would really like to go next year if I can... The Sydney Writers’ Festival is an awesome experience to be involved in. Not only was it great for future authors and writers but also a great inspiration to all students. I absolutely loved hearing their backstory and how they produce so many creative books. I also loved that this was not just a sit and listen experience but it also had some interactive parts and heaps of laughs, awe and amazement...I would definitely love to experience this again 100000000 times over....thank you to everyone who helped out. REPRESENTATIVE SPORT RESULTS: Another proud week in representative sport! NSWCCC HOCKEY SELECTIONS SUCCESS On Sunday, 15th May Annika Toohey, as a member of the NSWCCC hockey team, attended the NSW All Schools trials in Erina. Annika was selected for the NSW Women's All Schools team who now head to Melbourne in August to compete against the other states in the School Sport Australia Championships. This is a wonderful achievement for Annika who works very hard at her own hockey and is also well-known around the school as a lovely mentor and role model for the rest of our hockey players. Congratulations Annika. TRIATHLON SCHOOL SPORT AUSTRALIA

During the holidays Lleyton Wall attended the School Sport Australia National Triathlon Championships at Hervey Bay. This is the ultimate achievement for any athlete of school age and to get to this level at the age of 13 is truly outstanding. Lleyton finished 14th in the Junior (U/14) race which made him the third NSW athlete to finish. He also competed in the team event and represented NSW in a relay team which finished fifth. A huge congratulations to Lleyton on this amazing achievement.

NSWCCC HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS - BOYS The open boys hockey team recently enjoyed a trip to the NSWCCC Championships in Newcastle. The boys started the tournament against the strong Mt St Pat’s, Murwillumbah who had won the U/16 boys division last year. The boys took it right up to the defending champions, with strong defence from Joshua Dowrick, Samuel Magennis, Thomas Todd and goalkeeper Dylan Murphy . This was coupled with good creative play through the midfield (Jacob Searle, William Chappell and Ryan Payne). In a lightning quick game, the boys were pipped at the post going down 3-2 with a number of goals disallowed. Next up was Edmund Rice College, Wollongong. William Chappell did a stellar defensive job of marking their captain, who is also the Australian team captain. Another close game ensued, Scott Heslop nearly tying it up with seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately the clock beat us and we went down 2-1. Our final game on day one was the local derby against St Clare’s, Taree. In a friendly encounter, St Clare’s had too much firepower for our boys winning 5-1 with Ronan Cornell, Joshua Dowrick and Jacob Searle putting in strong performances against the eventual champions. Our final game was set up for day two against local school St Francis Xavier, Hamilton. This game was our first on grass, with the boys having to adjust to the differences that grass poses. A Joshua Dowrick goal brought us back into the game. It wasn’t enough, as we went down 4-1. Well done to all the boys on a wonderful effort and their behaviour on the trip. The team included Thomas Todd, Jack Bailey, Bradley De Domizio, Jacob Searle, Joshua Dowrick, Ryan Payne, Ronan Cornell, William Chappell, Samuel Magennis, Joshua Magennis, Scott Heslop, Ben Heslop, Luka Sagolj, Diego Bovey Mendez, Bradley Smith and Dylan Murphy . NSWCCC HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS - GIRLS An early morning hit-out against St Pius X High School, Adamstown was the beginning of a very successful day for the U/16 girls. Adapting to playing on grass was a challenge. The old rookie coach learnt very quickly that subbing in the modern era is much different to in the stone-age. The girls scratched out a victory 3-2. Scorers were Laura Dean and Abbie Jenner with two. Game two was a match to set up the young students for a good carnival. They received a great deal of game time against All Saints College, St. Peter’s Campus, Maitland. We were thoroughly entertained by their enthusiastic goalkeeper. The spirit in which this game was played drew wonderful comments of praise from their coach. The girls ran away with the game winning 9-0. Scorers were Annika Toohey (2), Laura Dean (2), Caleisha Thrower, Abbie Jenner, Sienna Toohey, Chloe Slade and Lily Burgmann . Diocesan counterpart, St. John’s College Woodlawn were our opposition on the turf surface. This was an end to end contest. Annika Toohey, Arcadia Meldrum , Tara Slattery and Chloe Frost stepped up a gear in this game by directioning our girls around the pitch. Jacqueline Lutton made some tremendous saves in goal. The girls ground out a tough 4-2 victory. Goals scored by Annika Toohey (2), Miah Redfern and Abbie Jenner. Day two began with a very tough game against Trinity Catholic College, Goulburn. The game was very tight with only one goal being recorded to the very hardworking Lily Burgmann . Our final round game was with St John Bosco College, Engadine. We had been watching their results mirroring ours throughout the carnival. On grass they proved to be a powerhouse to be reckoned with. They defeated us 4-0. Our hardworking midfield players, Ellie Townsend, Lucy Chappell and Sophie Jaggers working gallantly to stop the assault. This placed St John Bosco first after the completion of the round and MacKillop College in second place. An hour later we met again on turf for the playoff in the final of the U/16 Girls’ B division. St Johns Bosco steamrolled us in the first 15 minutes, scoring four goals, one being a penalty stroke which Jacqueline Lutton bravely faced in goal. The next 25 minutes were ours…. scoring two unanswered goals. As our young pocket rocket wingers of Chloe Slade, Tully Pearson and Miah Redfern really stayed wide for the strong back line clearances from Chloe Frost, Arcadia Meldrum and Tara Slattery. The winger to capitalise on these most was Sienna Toohey making a touch into goal that any Hockeyroo would be proud of…perhaps that is why we were watched by Hockeyroo Kate Jenner. Kate’s cousin, Abbie Jenner, also cracked a goal into the backboards. Final result 4-2. I was so proud of the girls and their behaviour all trip. They received outstanding praise from many officials and opposition coaches for their sportsmanship and fair mindedness. It has been many years since I have been to the carnival and girls may very well have me hooked on hockey again all these years later…almost 20! Ann Palmer Coach DIOCESAN CROSS COUNTRY On Wednesday, 18th May 34 MacKillop College students competed in the Diocesan cross country. The unusually warm May weather combined with a very hilly course to produce a tough day for our cross country competitors. Full credit to all our athletes as they all finished with very pleasing results.

The standout performances of the day were Hugh Robertson coming third in the U/12 boys. Hugh showed he was a real natural and with some extra training has the potential to do well at the CCC race in Sydney next month. Our U/12 girls showed we have some real talent coming through with three girls placing in the top ten. Liana Williams was the winner while Alani Cockshutt came in 3rd and Sophie Evans is also through to CCC. Mia Wilbow came 7th and Kate Field came 8th in the U/13 girls. Alexander Horder who is well known for his natural running ability ran a very respectable 4th in the U/13 boys. In the U/14 girls Miren Davies was proof that training does pay off by coming in 3rd. In the U/14 boys the MacKillop crowd went wild again as we had another two boys make in through to the CCC carnival in Sydney with Boyd Bann-Murray making a podium finish in 3rd and Lleyton Wall placing 5th. In our U/15 boys event Max Milligan showed he is a natural at running by placing 4th. In our U/15 girls our best-placed runner was Elly Pilgrim who came 14th which was a huge improvement from last year. In our U/16 boys we had two top ten placings from our boys with Jed Clarke running 6th and Tommy Brennan coming 8th. It came as no surprise to see Ella Heeney crossing the finish line first in the U/16 girls and way in front of second place. Ella has every chance of making it through to Nationals this year if she keeps up this great form. Scott Irving has been spotted in the streets of Lighthouse doing some special preparation for this race and it was great to see it paid off with a placing of 6th in the U/17 boys. This means Scott is also off to Sydney for his first CCC cross country meet. Our final mention goes to Erinn Smith in the U/18 girls. Erin placed 7th so is first reserve for Sydney. Congratulations to all our runners; we were very proud to see you racing hard but also being great sports and congratulating those around you. Good luck to all those runners who made top six and will be heading to Eastern Creek, Sydney on 17th June for the CCC cross country race where the pace is fast and furious.
