A Message from Governor Paul R. LePage

Maine agriculture is an important part of our heritage and the Maine economy. Maine farmers provide a variety of wholesome foods and generate thousands of jobs. On behalf of Maine citizens, I thank our farmers and producers for their work bringing fresh and natural products to our tables every day.

This is an exciting time for Maine-made products and Maine agriculture. The number of Maine farms is on the rise and so is the market value of our agricultural products. Since the last Census of Agriculture, the market value of Maine’s agricultural products has increased 24%. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s most recent Census of Agriculture also revealed that while the number of farms in the United States declined by 4 percent, the number of Maine farms increased to 8,174, up from 7,196 in 2002. This growth coincides with renewed consumer interest in locally grown foods.

Agricultural enterprises large and small are all part of this of positive trend. Together, they represent the strength of Maine agriculture and its potential to feed consumers in Maine and beyond. By purchasing products from Maine farms, you are supporting farmers and strengthening Maine’s economy. Open Farm Day highlights the contributions of Maine farms and connects consumers with the men and women who produce locally grown, nutritious foods every day.

We thank you for helping sustain Maine farm families, for promoting hard work and self-reliance and for the promise of even better days ahead.

Maine Open Farm Day, July 24, 2016, is a day to connect to life on the farm. The wonder of growing plants and animals will be on full display at participating farms scattered across Maine. Approximately 100 Maine farms open their gates to greet guests, and to tell the story behind the products they sell.

There is a story, even a lesson, which surrounds all the food and other farm products that we grow right here in Maine. You certainly can access one version of information from advertisements, or from the wisdom of internet messaging. Why not hear, in person, how real Maine food producers creatively mix land, water, seed, fertilizer and the sun, during Maine’s famously short growing season?

Mixing all the necessary ingredients can be a recipe for healthy, locally produced food. Talk to your Maine Open Farm Day host farmer about the science that helps us understand many hidden food ingredients, healthy and unhealthy. Our farming grandparents had only their keen powers of observation to guess about food safety influence. We now see things more clearly and with the aid of microscopes and laboratories, better understand how to make food more safe in the marketplace. Agricultural science is accumulated every year, every generation and we, as farmers, readily share the outcome of improved products and better information.

While you are traveling to the Maine farms noted on these pages, you’ll drive by hay fields, potato and grain fields, farm wood lots, orchards and large vegetable patches all growing crops that feed Maine’s economy before they fill our plates or supply other products important in our lives.

Green fields, trees and all plant life restore oxygen to our atmosphere, the natural way of replacing CO2 emissions. You could think of your Open Farm Day visit to a Maine farm as a field trip to observe agriculture and forestry performing the ongoing rural mitigation effort to offset urban degradation of our environment.

Most of all the Maine agricultural community wants you and your family to enjoy your day in the country, July 24, 2016. We look forward to seeing you there.

Produces a Stellar Cropof School ProgramsARTICLE PROVIDED BY MAINE AGRICULTURE IN THE CLASSROOM

The Maine agricultural license plate has increased funding for agricultural literacy by more than 300 percent since 2008 when the plate started, thanks to the dedication of Maine people to local food and farms!

This year has been very exciting for Maine Agriculture in the Classroom with over 84,000 school children in the state receiving Ag Literacy programs funded by the Maine Agriculture Specialty License Plate! More than $60,000 in grants will be awarded this summer to educational programs for Agricultural Literacy projects. A HUGE salute goes out to each driver with an agriculture plate for making this all possible!

Maine School Garden Day at the Albert S. Hall School in Waterville on May 7 was a wonderful day with educators from across the state. The entire school community contributed artwork and signs to make all the teachers feel very welcome. We could each see the difference that agriculture made for these upper elementary level students in an urban school, surrounded by asphalt. The 2015 MAITC Grant really contributed to a worthwhile program here!

Our “Read ME Agriculture” volunteer reading program continues to thrive with 650-plus classes across the state participating this year. The materials developed covered Potatoes this year. Next spring, our book will be “What’s in the Garden?” and we are searching for volunteer readers. Please check the website and sign up as a reader for your favorite school or classroom this fall. WE NEED YOU!

We welcome Myra Manning as the new Maine School Garden Network Coordinator. Myra’s work at Cornell Outdoor Education and Johnny’s Selected Seeds will help this program continue to GROW! Over 130 School Gardens across the state are now members of the website’s directory.

MAITC is now accepting registrations for our Summer Teachers Institute at the University of Maine in Machias to be held Aug. 1-5. Curriculum workshops and farm tours will fill this busy week. Open Farm Day is an annual family adventure in which farms throughout the State of Maine open their gates to offer the public an opportunity to learn about the business of agriculture.

The 26th annual Open Farm Day is set for Sunday, July 26, with more than 60 farms from across the state signed up to participate.

Visiting hours are generally 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., although some farms extend their hours for special events.

Most locations will have demonstrations, displays, farm-raised products for sale and animals and crops to experience. Activities may include barn and field tours, milking, hay rides, petting zoos, nature trails, beautiful scenery, samples for tasting and refreshments.

Many farms are handicapped accessible, have restrooms, and can handle group or bus tours.

Walk through an unfolding pastoral landscape and experience a microcosm of Maine agriculture.

Springvale Farm Walk offers more agricultural variety in a compact area than anyplace else in Maine. Featured farms raise sheep, beef cattle, Christmas trees, mushrooms, vegetables, berries, and apples. They also make cheese, bottle hard cider and make maple syrup.

The 4-mile, self-guided walk proceeds through fields, pastures, orchards and woods. The well-marked path generally follows gentle terrain. There are a few rough spots, but certainly walk-able by children. Sturdy shoes are recommended. We welcome dogs on leashes and owners who pick up after them.

A pancake breakfast is available from 8 to 9 a.m. at McDougal Orchards. Each farm along the way serves a complimentary refreshing drink. A few of the farms also sell produce and prepared food.

This event is held rain or shine.
