PRIEST I want to welcome all of you back.

I hope that Christmas was a time of great joy for you and your families.

Today is the feast of the epiphany,

the celebration of the arrival of the three wise men

to pay homage to the baby Jesus.

I want you to imagine what that journey must have been like:

a journey resting entirely on faith,

that they would know where they were going once they arrived.

Imagine what a joy it must have been for them

to have finally reached their destination.

Seniors, you're coming to an end of four years at St. Cecelia's--

you've lived together, studied together

and most importantly, prayed together:

strength for the journey.

We begin in the name of the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit.

Let us take a moment now to call to mind those times

when we've fallen from god's grace.

(As the prayer continues, the voices of the students drop out and PETER’S voice becomes the only one

CLAIRE: Our first reading today is the story of how despite the best efforts of a single mother, a child can

still go horribly, horribly wrong.

PETER: Mom!

CLAIRE: For his eighth birthday, peter asked for an ez-bake oven; his father asked for a divorce.

To me the link between those two events was as strong as peter's attraction to my makeup table. (Beat)

We sent him to catholic boarding school thinking it might help but when he met his roommate Jason,

the two of them locked eyes and I said to myself, "Claire, you wanted grandchildren, instead you're gonna

get ambiguous Christmas cards from south beach."

(DIANE approaches with a hymnal)

DIANE: Please join us in singing our offertory hymm, #279, "a bender among us".

(Sings)

of this sir-reverence love wherein thou stickest up to the ear! Come we burn daylight, ho!

JASON: Tis no wit to go…

(JASON has skipped ahead. PETER struggles to find the place)

PETER: Um…Why, may one ask?

JASON

(grabbing PETER)

(pulling away confused)

JASON

DRUMS IN HIS EAR, AT WHICH HE STARTS AND WAKES

AND BEING THUS FRIGHTED SWEARS A PRAYER OR TWO

AND SLEEPS AGAIN

(JASON snaps back from his hallucination, finding himself lost on stage)

JASON: Peace, Mercutio, peace. Thou talkest of nothing…

(PETER pulls JASON backstage, behind the curtains, then looks at him, concerned, thinking he’s just high)

PETER: Are you okay?

JASON: I’ll be fine…

PETER: God, Jason, you’re flying…

(The music for the masked ball begins. PETER pulls JASON onstage, joining the other students for the

dance)

(The dancers switch partners. JASON has increasing difficulty keeping time. He grows more and more

disoriented, finally grabbing for PETER as he falls. PETER cradles JASON into his arms as JASON dies

from the overdose)

SCENE 11

ST. CECILIA’S CHURCH

(PETER sits with the PRIEST in the confessional)

”ABSOLUTION’ PETER/PRIEST

PRIEST: People come to the church in times like these for answers, But I have none...most words fall

empty, but I'll try...It is a horrible thing that no one should have to go through losing a friend at such a

young age. You know, or you should know, that he is in a better place. We'll always ask ourselves if there
