Goals of Hajj
Introduction
§ When we know the goals for hajj then it will make our hajj easier. Whether we’re going to hajj or not, we need to know why we’ve been ordained to perform hajj.
§ Hajj means to struggle with people. We’re constantly in struggle. If we’re not struggling at home, then we’re struggling with the children, if we’re not struggling with the children then we’re struggling with the husband. And when we’re done with one struggle we go to another until we die, subhan Allah. What can make our struggle easy? When we know the goals.
Goals of Hajj
1. Fulfilling tawheed and sincerity in worship to Allah .(هلالج لج) Allah (هلالج لج) created us to worship Him sincerely and alone. We should listen and obey, it shouldn’t be that we listen and then wait to obey. The Companions are the best of people, an ayah was revealed in which Allah (هلالج لج) would account them for what’s inside them. They all went to the Prophet )ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص( and said this ayah is difficult. What did he tell them? Don’t be like those who say ‘we listen and disobey’; he was firm with them, subhan Allah. Immediately the Companions changed and they said ‘we listen and obey’. Then the next ayah was revealed for them so Allah (هلالج لج) will not burden anyone more than they can handle; it’s just a matter of submission. The moment we submit, Allah )هلالج لج( will make it easy. Surah Al Hajj 26– ( أأنا ووإإذذ ا بى تشرركك ال أأنن ٱٱلبيیتت مكانن إلبررٲهھھھيیمم بوو اىىفيینن بيیتى ووططهھرر شيیـٴ ع ووٱٱلقاىىميینن للطط ڪ جوودد ووٱٱلرر ٱٱلس ) (And (remember) when We showed Ibrâhim (Abraham) the site of the (Sacred) House (the Ka'bah at Makkah) (saying): "Associate not anything (in worship) with Me, [Lâ ilâha ill-‐allâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh) Islâmic Monotheism], and sanctify My House for those who circumambulate it, and those who stand up (for prayer), and those who bow (submit themselves with humility and obedience to Allâh), and make prostration (in prayer);") Allah (هلالج لج) chose the site for hajj and this is tawheed. It’s one house showing and this shows one direction, one place, so we shouldn’t associate with Allah )هلالج لج( other partners.
جسس نن منن ٱٱلرر ـ وورر قوولل ووٱٱجتنبوواا ٱٱألووث ٱٱلزز ) (That (Manâsik prescribed duties of Hajj is the obligation that mankind owes to Allâh), and whoever honours the sacred things of Allâh, then that is better for him with his Lord. The cattle are lawful to you, except those (that will be) mentioned to you (as exceptions). So shun the abomination (worshipping) of idol, and shun lying speech (false statements)) One should avoid idols and shirk and this shows tawheed. In the harem, we should not commit shirk. The house of Allah needs to be purified from dirt. From the entire world, there’s no place cleaner than the harem, subhan Allah. This shows cleanliness affects our tawheed, subhan Allah. When we obey then we will submit to One. Any place where the remembrance of Allah (هلالج لج) is taking place needs to be clean. We’re in a place where the remembrance of Allah (هلالج لج) is taking place, so it’s

important we keep our places clean. Tidiness and cleanliness is tawheed whereas dirtiness is shirk, subhan Allah. The shaitan loves dirty places and Allah (هلالج لج) loves those who repent and those who clean themselves. The hajj is a crash course teaching us this. The Prophet )ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص( said it’s important to not waste water, even if you have a river.
سحيیقق مكانن ) (Hunafâ' Lillâh (i.e. to worship none but Allâh), not associating partners (in worship) unto Him, and whoever assigns partners to Allâh, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far off place.) The one who’s not following the instructions then his example is like someone falling from the sky. Allah )هلالج لج( gave us instructions so we can be stable, but the one attaching to others then he’s falling from the sky and the shayateen are there to snatch him. If it’s not the shayateen snatching him then his desires will take him away faw away. You see people doing strange things because they’ve gone really far with their desires, astaghfar Allah. Hajj is teaching us to not be a ‘falling person’; we need tawheed. Haneef means your goal is Allah )هلالج لج( and if some ‘shirk’ comes along the way, you move away from it and keep going. Surah At Tawbah 3 – Before the mushrikeen would go to hajj and do tawaf while naked but this was prohibited. And this shows there’s a connection between tawheed and hajj. The talbiyah shows tawheed and when you finish tawaf, you pray two units and recite Surah Al Kafiroon and Surah Al Ikhlas and this too shows tawheed.
ٱٱلمخبتيینن ووبشرر ) (And for every nation We have appointed religious ceremonies, that they may mention the Name of Allâh over the beast of cattle that He has given them for food. And your Ilâh (God) is One Ilâh (God — Allâh), so you must submit to Him Alone (in Islâm). And (O Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص give glad tidings to the Mukhbitun [those who obey Allâh with humility and are humble from among the true believers of Islâmic Monotheism],) When any sacrifice is done, then ‘Bism Allah’ needs to be said before and this shows all the rituals of hajj are for tawheed.

But if you are prevented (from completing them), sacrifice a Hady (animal, i.e. a sheep, a cow, or a camel,) such as you can afford, and do not shave your heads until the Hady reaches the place of sacrifice. And whosoever of you is ill or has an ailment in his scalp (necessitating shaving),

he must pay a Fidyah (ransom) of either observing Saum (fasts) (three days) or giving Sadaqah (charity -‐ feeding six poor persons) or offering sacrifice (one sheep). Then if you are in safety and whosoever performs the 'Umrah in the months of Hajj, before (performing) the Hajj, (i.e. Hajj-‐at-‐Tamattu' and Al-‐Qirân), he must slaughter a Hady such as he can afford, but if he cannot afford it, he should observe Saum (fasts) three days during the Hajj and seven days after his return (to his home), making ten days in all. This is for him whose family is not present at Al Massid-‐Al-‐Haram (i.e non-‐resident of Makkah) And fear Allah much and know that Allah is severe in punishment.) If there’s shirk or riya’a then it will nullify the deeds. When you come back from hajj, then you will be mukhlis/sincere, you’re a free person.
2. Purifying the self from dispraised manners and then beautifying the self. Some people go to rehabs or retreats to get a restart in their life or to get rid of old habits. Allah )هلالج لج( chose the place for hajj where it’s not scenic. If it was scenic or had beautiful weather then the intention can change. There are people who go to hajj and they come back different and there are those who go and return from hajj the same. Most people are focusing on the rituals outside, but what’s important are the goals of hajj. How can we go to paradise if we’re not purifying our behavior? Our true manners show when we come across someone rude and we behave well with them. We need to be especially careful in hajj. Manners are something which are built inside, hajj can purify the ‘toxic’ manners we have, subhan Allah.
يیعلمهھ خيیرر منن تفعلوواا ووما ددوواا ٱٱ# اادد خيیرر فإنن ووتززوو قووىى ٱٱلزز قوونن ٱٱلت أوولى ووٱٱت ـ بب ٱٱأل يی ـ لب ) (The Hajj (pilgrimage) is (in) the well-‐known (lunar year) months (i.e. the 10th month, the 11th month and the first ten days of the 12th month of the Islâmic calendar, i.e. two months and ten days). So whosoever intends to perform Hajj therein (by assuming Ihrâm), then he should not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commit sin, nor dispute unjustly during the Hajj. And whatever good you do, (be sure) Allâh knows it. And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-‐Taqwa (piety, righteousness). So fear Me, O men of understanding!) When going to hajj, there should be no indulgence in indecent or inappropriate talk. This brings about good behavior whereas indecent talk brings about bad behavior. There should also be no stubborn behavior while in hajj. There should be no arguments in hajj. There’s never any goodness in arguments; sometimes we argue with our husbands, our children, our friends, even people in the street. (جدداالل ) is not only arguing, but also insulting and making others angry. Hadith: Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): Allah's Messenger )ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص( said, "Whoever performs Hajj to this House (Ka`ba) and does not approach his wife for sexual relations nor commits sins (while performing Hajj), he will come out as sinless as a newborn child. (Just delivered by his mother) -‐ Sahih al-‐Bukhari 1819
May Allah )هلالج لج( purify our intentions and grant us ikhlas. Ameen.
