Basic information on the Ochanomizu University

Summer Program

This program is to provide intensive courses in summer for Ochanomizu University / Graduate School students and overseas / Japanese partner universities students. All classes are multi-cultural, aiming for students’ career development and promotion of international exchanges. The provided courses are: 1) learning Japanese language, and 2) studying Japanese culture and society in English.

Those who are eligible to attend the program are: 1) Ochanomizu University / Graduate School students (including special registered students), 2) registered students (having proper studentship at the time of the program) of overseas and Japanese partner universities. • There may be screening of applicants on the Ochanomizu University side.• Both men and women can participate.

• Registration fee: 10,000 JPY Tuition fee: Free• Travelling costs to Tokyo, accommodation fee, and living costs (daily meal,

transportation from the accommodation to Ochanomizu University, etc.) must be paid by students.

• Depending on circumstances, scholarship may be awarded to selected students.

�International Students� Students who want to attend to the Program must contact to the person in charge at each partner university. The person in charge is required to nominate their candidates and submit the nomination sheet to the Summer Program office ([email protected]) by EMAIL (not by post). The deadline for the nomination is April 25, 2019. After the screening process, the Summer Program office will inform the person in charge at each partner university the students elected to proceed to the registration process. �National Students� There will be an announcement for the national students on the web site.

Accommodation is not assigned by Ochanomizu University.Students can apply for Ochanomizu University’s dormitory rooms, but the number of rooms is limited, so the students will be selected by lottery. Please see the instruction for details.

• ����� �������2���- Beginners who have no prior experience of studying Japanese- Students with JLPT N4 / CEFR A2, B1 or the equivalent

• ��� 15��3���Up to 15x3 students are accepted for the course

� Introductory class for beginners who have no prior experience of studying Japanese-The contents of this course include survival expressions, the review of the two

sets of Japanese alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana), and introductory lesson ofKanji characters. You will also learn some essential sentence patterns as well asbasic vocabulary of verbs and adjectives. Upon completion of this course, you will beable to communicate in Japanese for simple and practical everyday situations.

PREREQUISITE: Self-study of Hiragana and Katakana.

� Pre-Intermediate classes for students -The contents of the classes include reviewing the grammar they have studied, and

brushing up especially speaking skills. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to describe experiences and impressions, and express your ideas about topics that you are interested in.

-The students will be divided into the 2 classes whether they have finished studying thegrammar of JLPT N4 level.

� In all classes, students are expected to go out for excursion as a group work in the middle of the course period. The experience and exploration of the excursion are instructed to be a part of the students‘ final presentation.

Course 2Culture and Society Course

(taught in English)27 (Sat.) July – 9 (Fri.) August 2019 [2 weeks]

• For sub-course 1 and 2 attendants, all lectures are basically introductory level, so previous experiences of the subject is not required.

• For sub-course 3 attendants, the university-level knowledge of natural sciences is required.

• Up to 60 students for Sub-course 1, up to 30 students for each one, Sub-Course 2 and Sub-course 3 are accepted.

�Lectures� Choose 1 sub-course from belowSub-course 1: Gender Equality and LeadershipSub-course 2: Life Style in Japan Sub-course 3: Evolution in Natural Science: From Being to Becoming

• Each course has 90 minutes x 12 classes, a field study, and a workshop.• Each course is taught by several lecturers in an omnibus style and from

interdisciplinary perspectives.• More than 75 % attendance and submission of a final report are required for

getting credits.

�Project Works�Collaborative research work by multi-cultural groups, field works for the research, writing the report, and the presentation in English.

�Cultural /Exchange Events �(Courses 1 & 2 jointed)

• Welcome & Farewell parties• One-day Tokyo Tour• Culture Exchange Session

• You can optionally join our various cultural and exchange events at off-lecture times (afternoons, weekends) for basically free of charge!(You may need to pay for transportations and entrance fees for touring events)

• Joining those evens, you can learn more of Japanese culture with fun, and exchange with students of other courses, Ochanomizu University students of not participating the Summer Program, and High School and Junior High School students!!
