Some of our year 7s were asked by Minister Rachel if they could come and help her to mind map out her Governmental procedures after she saw the stellar job they had demonstrating their thinking during a THREAD reading task. a motorcycle accident last week.

BANGKA ISLAND MEMORIAL SERVICE

RAISING COMMITTEE

On Sunday 12th February, a 75th Anniversary memorial service was held to commemorate the lives of the Australian WW2 nurses who were shot by the Japanese on Bangka Island. Vivian Bullwinkel, the sole survivor of the massacre, had been a student at Prospect Primary School from 1922 – 1927.

Two Yr 7 students, Kyra and Amelie, and I represented our school at the service, laying a wreath on behalf of all Prospect Primary School students. Special mention was made of the students by the MC of the service, and later by politician Nat Cook in a Parliamentary session on the 16th Feb.

“Last Sunday Kyra and I attended a memorial for Australian War Nurses. It was very warming to hear speeches from many associates of the nurses. Dr Nelson’s speech was amazing and definitely, moving. Laying a wreath for the bravery and courage of these women was a special day for me.” Amelie

“The memorial service for Vivian Bullwinkel and the other nurses was beautiful. There was lot more people than I expected. We sung a few songs and listened to some speeches. The best speech was by Dr Brendan Nelson. Lots of people laid wreaths including Amelie and I. I’m glad I went”. Kyra

Working Bee On a beautiful sunny Sunday last week, a small group from the Grounds Committee met to install a number of irrigation pipes under the ground in the Junior Primary, in readiness for our Autumn/Winter planting.

Thank you to Ben Taylor, David Freesmith, Andrew Macrae and Christel Liddle for their time, energy and expertise.

If anyone has some left over lengths of fake lawn they could donate, we would make good use of it in the junior primary area. Please let the Front Office know.

DOGGIE DATA

HUMANITIES PROJECT

As part of the Geography and Citizenship curriculum, last year, Year 3/4 students researched the question “How do we best meet the needs of dogs and dog owners in Prospect?” They analyzed data from the Prospect Council dog database to determine how many dogs were in Prospect and in which suburbs they were located. They looked on Google Earth to determine the closest dog parks and researched on the internet about dog cafes. After analyzing all of the information, they made the following recommendations: Ern Sconce Park should become a dog park where dogs are able to be let of their leash at any time; dog cafes (where you can purchase pupachinnos and dog treats) should be developed along Prospect Road. The students created a movie about their project and sent it to Prospect Council.

Last week, the Chief Executive Officer for Prospect Council, Ms Cate Hart, visited our school to meet with two students Lulu and Jack to discuss the proposals. She commended the students on their initiative and said that she would take the proposals to the Mayor of Prospect and the Councilors for

their consideration. She agreed to send the proposal of the dog cafes to the Prospect Traders Association.

The project was a fantastic example of how students were able to take their learning into real life contexts and make a difference in their community.

Library News

Thank you to the wonderful volunteers who responded to the Newsletter item and came to help in the library last week. Lucie and her team of helpers were able to cover many of our new resources so the students can start to enjoy them.

Lucie would appreciate any help at any time so if you have a spare hour please drop in. There is always lots that needs doing.

"It is exciting and amazing to have our video shown at the Council" Lulu
