Mixed Netball Competition Continues

Monday night once again saw a great turnout at the community mixed netball competition,

with round 2 games again entertaining the crowd! This Monday (29th May) sees the Year

12 team take on the mighty staff team at lunchtime, in what should be a terrific spectacle! This event is part of the fundraising efforts for the College’s 2018 Turkish Trip, with stu-

dents, staff and College community members able to attend this lunchtime game for a gold

-coin donation. There will also be a sausage sizzle ($2 per sausage in bread) this Monday

lunchtime with proceeds also going towards the Turkey trip.

Healthy Mind, Healthy Body - Education Week

Although the College has not formally recognised Education Week this week, the theme

of ‘Healthy Mind, Healthy Body’ is a continual focus of the College in many events,

classes and daily happenings. The College endeavours to avail itself to the community

on a regular basis with events such as our College cross-country and sports days being

well attended by parents and community members, and plans for a Grandparents/Special

Persons day to take place later this Year. Students are able to involve themselves in a

range of lunchtime activities that promote a healthy mind and body, with the College

gym open each day for student use, a regular Science tinker-table for junior students, use

of the College weights room for senior students, and a range of sports days and camps

held at a range of Year levels.

The College employs a wellbeing co-ordinator two days per week, a College chaplain

two days per week and a secondary school nurse two days per week, and is also able to

provide a whole school breakfast program on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, largely

due to a wonderfully dedicated group of volunteers. We have very recently been accept-

ed into a Respectful Relationships ‘Partner School’ initiative and continue to have all

Year 9 and 10 students participate in the ADVANCE program which instils in students

positive behaviours and values around self, team and community.

The community netball and yoga sessions held this term have been very well attended

by the community and have also served as a great way in which to bring the College and

community closer together. Kids Friday Club is also held once again this Friday after

school, and the tremendous volunteers involved in this program will no doubt have a great deal of student participa-

tion in this very popular activity.

Students in the senior sub-school have once again actively engaged in two morning study skills sessions with a

healthy mind and body focus, with students participating in yoga, mindfulness colouring, active movement and pri-

vate reading, along with a focus activity on developing habits of mind. Our Outdoor Education class return today

from a 2-day bike camp and our Year 7/8 students are currently attending their term 2 sports day in Bendigo.

Keep up the great work staff, students, community members and dedicated volunteers!

Respectful Relationships ‘Partner School’

I am very excited to report that East Loddon P-12 College has very recently been accepted as a Partner School in the

implementation of Respectful Relationships at the College. This program is mandatory for all Victorian Government

and Catholic schools as of this Year, and as a partner school we will receive assistance from a Leading School in the

initial implementation of this program which is to begin in Term 3. College staff member Ms Fiona Phelan will lead the implementation of this program in Health classes from Years 7 – 10 during Semester 2, and we look forward to working together with our Leading School, along with other local schools, to implement this very worthwhile program for our students. Attitudes To School Survey We want our students to tell us what they think! Our school is conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training. The survey assists schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to assist in improving your child's schooling experience. This Year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our College between Monday 29 th May and Friday 16th June. The survey will be conducted during your child’s general classtime by myself and only takes 20-30 minutes to complete. Students from Year 4 to 12 at East Loddon P-12 College will participate in the survey, completing the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool, with results being reported back to the school in Term 3. The Department has updated the survey for 2017 to include important new measures that are known to influ-ence student engagement and performance. Please Do Not Send Food To The Canteen For Re-Heating It has come to my attention of late that a number of students are beginning to bring lunches to school, then requesting that canteen volunteers reheat these for students. Students at East Loddon P-12 College have a designated eating time between 12:44pm and 1:00pm each day, with our College canteen not opening to students until 1:00pm each day. Canteen staff are busily preparing the canteen for opening time and have a range of duties to undertake each day. The duties, unfortunately, do not include heating student (or staff) lunches. If your child wishes to have a warm lunch on any particular day, please either order an item from the canteen menu, or have your child bring a sandwich to school that can be toasted as part of our lunchtime toasting program.

Monday night saw the staff extend their lead in the community netball cup. Sitting well atop the ladder and clearly

head and shoulders better than any other side, we managed to add another ‘ring in’ to our side. We are fielding a

lot of criticism and I suppose on reflection, technically Bridget Baker is not a teacher, but she may be one day and

our latest team member, Sarah Perry also has dreams of joining the profession. For the short term however, in our

eyes, they are both teachers….and good ones too. On Monday we take on the Year 12s. That is when they will

feel the true wrath and power of the staff. Though Sarah can’t play, (apparently she doesn’t teach here on Mon-

days), Bridget will be starting at GA. The rest of the positions are undecided, but if you or your kids have a gold

coin, they can witness the likes of Jackson ‘I’m everywhere’ Clayton, Bec ‘fancy feet’ Johns, Sarah ‘the enforcer’

Byrne, Andy ‘stretch’ Cameron, Sam ‘no slip’ Heaslip, Steve ‘the boss’ Leed and Scott ‘slapped cheek’ Wilkinson

take on the Year 12 duds on Monday the 29th at 1pm. Snags will be for sale that day also (for $2). Don’t rely on

these for lunch as I’m not sure how many will be cooked, but maybe use as a nutrient supplement. Go Staff! This

event is a fundraiser for our Turkish Exchange Program.

Piano lessons are available at the College for a very reasonable cost. We all know the benefits of children studying

music and we would love to have some more kids take up the offer of learning the piano. Irina has offered to take

students 2 at a time if cost is prohibitive or children are a little hesitant. Please call the Office if you or your chil-

dren are interested.

The production for 2018 is to be held in the last week of term 3. Students have begun working on their ideas and

acts. We dearly look forward to this event every two Years and strongly encourage parents to keep the enthusiasm

of kids high in the lead up to the production. Each production Year we go through a spell of ‘I don’t want to do it’

yet it always turns in to one of the best days of the school calendar. I love it! I just wish I had a talent.

All spectators welcome Monday at lunch.

Assembly News

At our assembly we talked about respecting what others have and not allowing envy to interfere with good decision

making, using a Bernstein Bears short film to convey the value. This is very pertinent as Gumnut Villages spring up along our boundary fence and petty pilfering taking place, with moss and gumnuts mysteriously vanishing, only to

reappear as part of a new luxury subdivision. You could be excused for mistaking some of the Gumnut sites for Bower Bird bowers but in reality they are superb examples of young creativity and imagination.

Prep Letter in Focus

The letters in focus are ‘p’ and ‘o’. Our Preps are also exploring the trigraphs: ‘eer’ and ‘ear’ as in ‘Dear little

deer’.

Prep Words To Fluency

The words being consolidated are ‘mum’ and ‘dad’.

Chemistry

If you’re anything like our P-6 Cohort of students, when you read that heading you’re eyes light up, you get a slight smirk on your face and visions come to you of creating spectacular effects in the school’s Science lab…

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that’s not exactly what will be happening in Science this term (much to many students disappointment!)

According to Google (Which is always right), Chemistry is:

the branch of science concerned with the substances of which matter is composed, the investigation of their properties and reactions, and the use of such reactions to form new substances.

For our P-6 students this Term, it has more to do with:

- What things are made of and why (for our Preps and Grade 3/ 4 class) - The three states of matter and how a substance can go from one to another (for our Grade 2/3 class and Grade

5) - The changes which can occur to substances when provided with a stimulus (for our Grade 1/2 and 6 classes)

And if they’re really, really good, we might be able to conduct and enjoy some safe chemical reactions at the end

of term. Miss Pilkington

Years 3/ 4 Science Gloves please

This week our group has been asked to bring different types of gloves to school

(as many types as possible) so that we can identify materials used and the attrib-

utes that make it best suited to that purpose. We will photograph them and re-

turn them. Please remind your child to have them ready for period 4 tomorrow.

VCAL Excursion On Tuesday mornings the Year 12 students have been walking down to the Prep room to listen to their Prep bud-dy read and to read stories to them. It has been fantastic to see them making such significant improvement with their reading each week. This week, the VCAL students went to Melbourne to visit Cardboard Cartons. The owner of this factory gave us an insightful tour of each section of the factory and infor-mation about employability skills and work ethic and what they look for in a resume. He was very generous and gave each student a gift box and provided lunch on the day. We then completed a four hour barista course and learnt a lot about what is involved in making coffee. Senior entries into RAW Arts exhibition (photo to go with this is called ‘Neve’) There are a few new fabulous additions to the East Loddon office gallery space this week, including some artworks created by senior school stu-dents Georgia P, Chloe C and Neve L-T. These were displayed at Dudley House over the weekend for the RAW Arts awards (along with some more beautiful artworks from our junior and middle school students). Brittany H also had her wonderful oil on canvas work, Hope, on display and it has been chosen to be further ex-hibited in ‘RAW in the Foyer’ located in the foyer of The Capital Theatre, Bendigo until Friday 30 June. It’s exciting to see the talents of our students on public display! – Mrs Heaslip Photography class – Alphabet Photography (photo to go with this is called ‘Jas and Chelsea’) In photography we recently completed a project called “Alphabet Photography”. To do this project we had to take pictures that had the shape of a letter to spell the word of our choice. We took pictures around the school and some at home. We really enjoyed this activity and our finished submissions look exquisite! By Chelsea H and Jasmine L Street Art Camp – watch this space! If you are a Year 9/10 student, keep an eye out for further information about the upcoming Street Art camp pencilled in for July. We are lucky enough to be involved with this awesome camp thanks to the Loddon Shire, where our students work alongside Boort, Pyramid Hill and Wedder-burn students in Melbourne with artists at Blender Studios. There are limited spaces, and an small application of sorts will be required if you are interested in going. I will pro-vide more info as soon as I have it! – Mrs Heaslip Public English Speaking Award Yesterday Cyan N and Jo C participated in the Public Eng-lish Speaking Award regional finals alongside a number of Bendigo schools. Both girls delivered a prepared speech

and had to respond to an impromptu topic. Cyan spoke on the topic of white privilege and the focus of Jo’s speech was women’s rights. The impromptu topic was ‘Don’t Look Now’. The quality of all speeches was high and I was so proud of the efforts of both of our East Loddon students. It takes a lot of courage to speak publicly, partic-ularly when you consider how tricky that impromptu topic was! Well done, Cyan and Jo! Mrs Clare

Bike Camp The day start-ed well, with a bus, bikes and all the students. We departed the College for Trawool. Today the students have learnt that when I say it's undulating, there's not too many hills or we are nearly there. It indicates it could be hilly and there are more km to cover. Despite the hills this group have ridden very well to date (day 1). There starting pace was impeccable, which allowed for a nice long lunch in Yea. From here we rode through the Cheviot Tunnel and on-wards to Molesworth, Cathkin and then Alexandra. The caravan park here has an outdoor lounge room with a tv, selection of books and magazines and a table ten-nis table. The group has done a fan-tastic job to date. Look forward to seeing parents back at school to-day (Thursday) at 4:15pm for quick pack up, tidy up, where students can leave at approx 4:30pm. Thanks Sarah Byrne Further Maths News It’s not often that I publicly recognise one group of stu-dents, but I feel the need to on this occasion. I teach a group of Year 12s Further Maths students this Year and they are working really well. What I am particularly pleased with, is that the majority of them are asking heaps of questions and more importantly they are visiting me regularly for assistance outside of class time. This sounds like a no brainer, but as you probably know, being brave enough to ask questions when you are unsure is not as easy as it sounds. The other thing is, if our senior students are to take advantage of small class sizes, then they must seek extra assistance. I’m sure this is happening in all classes but, congratulations to my Further Maths class for doing this. Note to all senior students: Exploit the ad-vantage that you have.

Yr 9 Class Happenings

In classes this past week we have welcomed a new student named Chloe into the class. It has been great to have a new

student and this has made us think about what it feels like to be new to a school. Ella helped Chloe over the first cou-

ple of days so that she was made to feel comfortable in her new setting. During Maths we have been focusing on Al-

gebra, and getting a better understanding of this. In English we have been working on persuasive writing tasks, which

some of us really enjoy and some of us find hard! In Science we are working on volcano/earthquake projects which

are going to be displayed in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. Humanities has focused on World War 1, and in

PE we have started focusing on Gaelic Football and fitness training. We have been working on a Service Star in Ad-

vance class, which focusses on our Advance values and how they relate to our group.

Year 9 also participate in electives, which allows us to select our preferred option in each of the blocks. In Photog-

raphy we have started working on ‘projection photography’ which we have found interesting. In Metal we are using

the power of steam to create ‘donkey engines’, and in Scrap Metal Sculpture we are working on individual projects

such as making a small animal or a garden sculpture. In Cooking, we have focused on a Mediterranean diet. This has

been really interesting. In German we have been focusing on modal verbs. We are getting much better with these! In

Digital Technology we have been working towards creating our own websites. We have been repairing our 6-cylinder

Holden motors in Auto, and in Painting and Drawing we are working on our final paintings.

Today we have two of our classmates assisting with umpiring duties at the Year 7 and 8 sports day, and a couple of our classmates have been helping with fundraising efforts for the Turkey Trip that they are participating in next April.

Food Allergy Week is an important annual initiative of Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia that aims to raise awareness about food allergy in Australia, to help re-duce the risk of a reaction for those living with food allergy and to help manage potentially life-threatening emergencies when they happen.

Food Allergy Week calls on all Australians to Be Aware and Show You Care by getting involved with this Year’s activity by Paint a Nail Today.

What is a food allergy?

A food allergy is an immune system response to a food protein that the body mistakenly believes is harmful. When the individual eats food containing that protein, the immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals, trigger-ing symptoms that can affect a person’s breathing, gastrointestinal tract, skin and/or heart.

Signs and symptoms of food allergy can be mild, moderate or severe. An allergic reaction can include; hives, swelling of the lips, face and eyes, ab-dominal pain, vomiting, swelling of the tongue, swelling of the throat, breathing difficulty, persistent dizziness and/ collapse. If left untreated, signs and symptoms related to breathing and heart/ blood pressure can be fatal. Incidence

Food allergy now affects one in 10 infants and about two in 100 adults in Australia. Some children may outgrow their allergy, however some adults develop their food allergy later in life after eating the food without a problem for many Years. The severity of an allergic reaction can be unpredictable although someone who has previously had a severe reaction to a particular food is more likely to have another severe reaction to that food. Someone who has a previous mild reaction to a food is less likely to have a severe reaction but the possibility is still there. Someone who is allergic to a food but has not been prescribed an adrenaline (epinephrine) autoinjector still needs to do their best to avoid the food as reactions do sometimes become more severe.

For more information about Food Allergies or Food Allergy Week Activities check out the website www.foodallergyaware.com.au, www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au, www.allergyfacts.org.au or contact School Nurse Denise Leed.

TERM 2 – DATES

THURS JUNE 1st to THURS JUNE 29th

I am delighted to be able to announce to our keen footballers in the lower Primary levels that we have been successful in obtaining

funding, thanks to the Governments Sporting Schools Program for Term 2. This funding has allowed us to source a coach via our

AFL Development Officer, Shane Koop in Bendigo. The AFL program for Primary students will start next Thursday night the 1st

of June. The program will run for 5 weeks, with the last session being held on June 29th. Please read the details below (extract from

Sporting Schools website) to see whether the program is appropriate to your child/children’s age & development.

LEARN AFL is an Australian Football development program targeted at students with limited to no knowledge of the game. This program has a skill development focus. Two distinctive programs have been developed based on Year/Grade levels.

Grade 1&2 students learn fundamental motor skills with fun skills and games.

Grades 3-4 student take part in games and activities with a focus on fun and teamwork.

Our coach, Nathan Fitzpatrick, will be taking sessions from 3.30-4.30pm. Students must be collected from school promptly at 4.30pm. Please ensure your child has change of sport clothes and appropriate footwear. It would also be a good idea to in-clude a small snack for afternoon tea. In the event of rain, the program will still operate with activities most likely to be held on the Tiger Turf or possibly in a share of the gymnasium.

*The support of parent helpers is crucial to the running of ‘Learn AFL’. We must have at least one each session to assist with su-pervision, or else the program won’t go ahead. I am keen to hear from people who are willing to assist, even if you can only com-mit to 1 out of 5 weeks, please let me know by completing the form below. Please note numbers are capped, so get your form in early to avoid missing out on this great opportunity to LEARN AFL!

PA NEWS

Parents Association FRUIT & ORNAMENTAL TREE FUNDRAISER

Once again, the College Parents Association are running the Fruit & Ornamental Tree Fundraiser, providing family,

staff and members of the community with access to reasonably priced and excellent quality trees. You will find the

listing of available trees and an order form attached to this newsletter and also within the Skoolbag App. You can

easily forward the listing and order form onto family and friends from within the Skoolbag App.

When you have completed your order form, not forgetting to add $4 per tree – (this amount being the fundraising

component for the school parents association) return to the school office or directly in the post or email to Jodie

Demeo by Friday June 9th

.

Trees will be available for collection from the East Loddon Community Centre around mid July.

All trees, with the exception of the listed container plants, are bare rooted, so they will need to be

planted in their forever home or in a temporary home soon after they are collected.

Please remember to read your weekly school newsletter for news of what’s happening at the College. The

front page always has a brief summary of important dates to remember. If you are not sure of anything, please either

ring the school to check or ask on the Parents Association Facebook page and we will help you. It’s all about com-

munication and working together. Thanks heaps.

Next P.A. Meeting
