Dear Parents, For the last two weeks Ms Amanda Prosser and myself have been attending the Microsoft World Wide Global Forum in Barcelona, Spain as guests of Microsoft. It was a wonderful Forum where we spent time with schools and educators from all across the world. As a Microsoft World Wide Tour School we were asked to contribute in a number of Forums but particularly around System Change. What stood out to us was how well our school is recognised and so well known all over the world. We were constantly asked for information around what we do and how did we get to the position we are now. Schools all over the world recognise they need to change to prepare their children for the 21st Century. Our school is recognised as an exemplar in this field. We also had a chance to look at the exhibitions presented by over 300 of the most innovative school teachers in the world. It was so rewarding to see and learn from what these teachers have accomplished and the passion they exhibit for what they do. A special thank you to Loretta who filled in for me whilst I was away. Whilst in Barcelona we had the privilege to visit a school, who had previously visited us at Silverton, to see what changes they had made. This was truly a most rewarding experience and we both came away with some new learnings. It was pleasing to also see that they had taken away many ideas they saw when they visited us last year and had since implemented in their school. What stood out to us was how advanced our school was and what impact we have had on schools all over the world. This is something our school community can be very proud of. CAMP Thank you to all of our teachers who gave up their private time to attend both the Grade 4 and 6 Camps this year. We understand this can be an imposition on their private lives but appreciate the fact they want to ensure the children in our school get to experience this. CHESS Congratulations to our Chess Team who competed at Deepdene PS last week. They came away successful in taking first place. Well done to the boys involved. GARDENS Dawn is seeking help from some parents who would like to work with her in updating an area of the school gardens. She has arranged a terrific plan and now needs help to do it. If you are able to help out please see Dawn at school. SILVERTON PRIMARY SCHOOL ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL: Student Wellbeing - Loretta Sutherland

QUOTES FOR PARENTS and CHILDREN: If you want your children to be intelligent, read them Fairy Tales. If you want your children to be more intelligent, read them more Fairy Tales. Albert Ein-stein FRIENDSHIP We all want our children to be happy. Having friends helps happiness—but it needs skills. What is friendship? Spending time together. Sharing ideas and treats. Having fun. Respecting each other's differences. Loyalty, sticking up for each other. Caring for each other's safety and wellbeing. Both of you working on the skills to keep your friendship going.

Friendship Skills. How to be a friend. Mums, Dads & Kids “Read the VERBS together.” Always try to DO these things Talk - be interesting, keep up with what's going on around you, eg. TV, sports, music, shared interests - so that you have something to talk about. Share the conversation, so that you each get a chance to be listeners and talkers. Listen to what your friends are saying and ask questions about it. Praise your friends when they do something well. Use your manners, Say please and thank you. Friends like to be pleasant to each other. Think of yourself as being a friendly person, look friendly and be friendly - and others will find you friendly. Be helpful - do things for your friends without keeping a score on who's done the most favours. Give back things you have used or borrowed from each other (this is a good idea for brothers and sisters, too). Be aware of others' feelings - think before you speak. (Sometimes it is a good idea to keep your thoughts to yourself rather than upset people's feelings.) Handle conflict - by being clear about what you want and how you will compromise. Share your time with other friends. Be honest about your feelings, eg. "I don't think this is a good idea because…" But don't always try to be the leader - try out other people's ideas. Try to understand people by thinking about things from their point of view.

DON’T Don't brag about what you've got or done. No put downs - you wouldn't like it if someone did this to you. No prejudice - don't make comments about country, colour, religion or physical appearance. "If you can't find anything nice to say about someone, say nothing," is a good motto for everybody. Don't take over - let others tell their own jokes and news. Don't argue and get upset if your friend doesn't agree with you about something. That's O.K. She has the right to an opinion too. Don't fight your friends' battles. You can support your friends by helping them to deal with their problems: o Be a good listener

o Help them to stay safe.

o Encourage them to try.

o Be there when they need you to be.

o Help them to make good choices.

o Encourage them to look for help from trusted adults.

o Don't talk about them without their permission. Being 'popular', and having real friends, is not always the same thing. Most adults would think themselves really lucky to have one true friend - someone they can trust and rely on for their help and support when they need it. Real friendship lasts through good times and bad times.

Remember: You are a unique (only one like you) person with lots of different sides to your character, so you can have different friends who share your different interests, eg. friends at school, in your street, in sport clubs, in your family, etc. Good friends can play with other people sometimes and still be friends. It’s good to have a good friend but it’s good to have other friends too.

Thanks for taking the time to read these messages

Kids, a cow, paint and glue. Curious?

Over the next 6 weeks Silverton is bringing the farm to the classroom with the Picasso Cows program. The program celebrates one of Australia’s biggest agricultural Industries, the dairy industry, and also teaches kids that milk doesn’t just come from the supermarket!

Some 5/6 students will get to design and paint a life-sized fibreglass cow based on the theme ‘Fuel for Life’– documenting their findings from start to finish in a learning journal. It’s interactive fun with an important educational message.

We often hear from nutrition experts that Australian children aren’t having enough calcium every day and that dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yogurt are one of the biggest sources. Despite this, most primary school kids aren’t having enough.

This program will tie in with our classroom nutrition education, teaching children about the importance

of the five food groups, including dairy foods, for good health and wellbeing.

And that’s not all! Our school is one of several schools in the region participating in Dairy Australia’s Picasso Cows program, creating some healthy competition! At the end of the program there’ll be a presentation day and the winning school will be awarded $250.
