Dear Family,
It is hard to believe that we are only a few weeks away
from the end of this liturgical year and then enter in to the
season of Advent! Of course if you walk through the
stores, it would seem that Christmas is already here!! As
we approach the end of the liturgical year, the Church
starts to focus our Readings on heaven and the end of time.
Our Old Testament reading from the Second Book of
Maccabees relates the story of a mother who had seven
sons. They were being threatened with torture and death
for refusing to break Jewish laws. They all chose death
rather than risk offending God and thus losing eternal life
in heaven! Their mother encouraged them to stay strong
and die for their faith knowing that they would be together
for all eternity in heaven even as their time together here
on earth would soon end. This display of faith and courage
is amazing! How strong is our faith in God and eternal
life? Would we be willing to give up our life here on earth
and gain eternal life rather than offend God and lose
eternal life in heaven just so that we could continue our life
on earth for a while longer? As we journey through these
last few weeks of this liturgical year, the Church will
continue to address this question. How will we respond?
Praised Be Jesus Christ…Now and Forever!!!
Fr. Steve

HEALTHY HOUSEKEEPING NOVEMBER
GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX (GERD) “Reflux” is a common condition which usually responds to treatment readily and is non-life threatening. However, the uncomfortable symptoms can interfere with daily activities and sleep. What exactly causes the GERD symptoms ? When you swallow, food passes down your throat and through your esophagus into your stomach. A muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter controls
the opening between the esophagus and the stomach. The muscle remains tightly closed except when you swallow food. If this muscle fails to close properly, the acid containing contents of the stomach can travel back up into the esophagus. This backward movement is called reflux. As stomach acid enters the lower part of the esophagus, it can produce a burning sensation, commonly referred to as “heartburn”. What can be done to obtain relief from these symptoms?
The position of your body after eating (An upright posture helps prevent reflux.)
Eat meals 3-4 hours before lying down and avoid bedtime snacks.
The size of the meal (Smaller meals reduce reflux.)
Maintain a healthy weight to eliminate unnecessary intra-abdominal pressure caused by extra pounds.
Limit consumption of fatty foods, chocolate, peppermint, coffee, tea, colas and alcohol all of which relax the lower esophageal sphincter. Also avoid tomatoes, and citrus fruits or juices, which contribute additional acid that can irritate the esophagus.
Give up smoking for multiple reasons but also because it too relaxes the esophageal sphincter.
Wear loose clothing.
If these measures do not improve or eliminate symptoms, then over the counter antacids can help to treat “heartburn”. Those who are experiencing persistent discomfort, do not respond to treatment or are having increased frequency of their symptoms should see their Primary care physician. *The symptom described as “heartburn” can also be an indication of an impending heart attack. If you are ALSO experiencing chest pressure, sweating, shortness of breath, nausea, radiating pain into neck and arms, then you should immediately call 911.
SPECIAL COLLECTION
We will hold a special collection during this weekend, November 9 and 10, for the Archdiocese for Military Services. The purpose of this collection is to help the Archdiocese for Military Services meet the pastoral needs of the many men and women from the United States who are stationed throughout the world. The Archdiocese’s resources are extremely limited given that they are not an ordinary diocese consisting of parishes and receive no government funding. Please do what you can to help support the faith life of the Catholics serving in our military, as they courageously work to protect and defend our well being and security.
