TODAY’S READINGS & REFLEXION First Reading — As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so God rejoices in the chosen Zion and Jerusalem (Isaiah 62:1-5). Psalm — Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations (Psalm 96). Second Reading — All the varied gifts and talents found in the Christian community are products of the same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Gospel — At a wedding festival in Cana, Jesus changes water into wine at his mother’s request (John 2:1-11). SURPRISES Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God’s surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today’s Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today’s familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody’s life—not necessarily our own—will be surprised for the better.

SORPRESAS La vida está llena de sorpresas, algunas agradables, otras no. La Sagrada Escritura está llena de relatos sobre las sorpresas de Dios que surgen donde menos se esperan: los hijos más jóvenes reciben la herencia, a los más humildes se les dan los sitios de honor; un predicador itinerante, condenado a morir como un criminal, es exaltado hacia la gloria celestial eterna. Cualquiera que haya planificado una boda o celebración similar sabe que está llena de oportunidades para que surjan sorpresas. Para el novio (el cual, en el relato bíblico, no tiene contacto directo con Jesús) la agradable sorpresa vino porque otra persona había prestado atención y tenía fe en Jesús. A lo mejor pensamos que la lección de la conocida historia de las bodas de Caná es que cuando tenemos fe en Jesús, nuestra vida cambiará positivamente. Sin embargo, un cristiano necesita tener una perspectiva más amplia, y darse cuenta que tener fe en Cristo implica que la vida de alguien –sea la tuya, sea la de otra persona– va a mejorarse sorpresivamente.

Del Escritorio del Pastor... Queridos hermanos y hermanas en el Señor Jesús: “Te llamarán con un nombre nuevo, pronunciado por la boca del Señor. Serás corona de gloria en la mano del Señor y diadema real en la palma de su mano”. ¡Qué magníficas son tus obras Señor! Nos creaste con un corazón de carne, sensible cuando recibe agravios, frágil cuando ama, noble cuando le interpelas a perdonar. Y cuando aprendemos del ayer, cuando el rencor no hace cuerpo en uno, cuando nos mantenemos en tus filas, Tú nos llamas hijo, hija y vamos transformando nuestro viejo ser para ser pueblo de tu propiedad. Hoy, tercer domingo de Enero es la oportunidad de tomar una decisión por un presente más en Dios, alejándonos del mundo de los conflictos, sepultando los males que nos halan por dentro y por fuera. Es el Año de la Misericordia y el tiempo va corriendo, nos urge enmendar, corregir, liberar. Al final de cada misa podremos elegir quedarnos sentados o ponernos de pie y acercarnos a recibir unción, haciendo nuestra la exhortación que nos hace el Papa Francisco: “Este es el tiempo de curar nuestras heridas y de ofrecer perdón”. No será un momento mágico, sino un momento de disponer el corazón a ser sanado una, dos, las veces que sean necesarias y aunque alguna gente a nuestro alrededor sea como es y quiera seguir lastimando o dañando a otros, usted, yo, nosotros, seremos esa presencia viva de Dios para enrumbar la vida por senderos de armonía, como creaturas de un cosmos donde nuestro Creador se complace. Ya estamos en Tiempo Ordinario, que es importante porque quiere decir “Orden” y es celebrado cuando no es ni Adviento, ni Cuaresma y es cuando enfocamos el Ministerio Público de Jesús, lo que hizo para revelarnos el amor del Padre, anunciando el Reino que está cerca y enseñando cómo vivir como discípulos. From the Desk of the Pastor... Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, “You shall be called by a new name pronounced by the mouth of the LORD. You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the LORD, a royal diadem held by your God.” How wonderful are your woks Lord! You created us with a heart of flesh, reasonable when it receives grievances, vulnerable when it loves, noble when you ask it to forgive. And when we learn from yesterday, when resentment is embodied in us, when we keep ourselves in your rows, you call us son, daughter and we go transforming our old selves to become people of your property. Today, third Sunday of January is the opportunity to make a decision for a present more in God, staying away from the world of conflicts, burying those bad things that pull us inside and out. This is the Year of Mercy and time is running, we urge us to revise, amend and set free. At the end of each Mass we can choose to remain sitting or to stand up and get closer to receive unction, making ours Pope Francis Exhortation: “This is time to heal our wounds and to offer forgiveness.” It won't be a magic moment, but a moment to provide our hearts to be healed once, twice, all the necessary times and even though some people around us are the way they are and want to keep on hurting or damaging others, you, myself, we will be that living presence of God to set off life towards trails of harmony, like the creatures of a cosmos where our Creator is well pleased.

We are already in ordinary time, which is important because it means “Order” and is celebrated when is not Advent nor Lent and is when we focus on Jesus’ public Ministry, what he did to reveal the Father’s love, announcing the Kingdom that is near and teaching how to live like disciples. Let us decide to give God the best of us today and everyday and go wherever He guides us, keeping ourselves united with each other. May God bless us, Fr. José Francisco Herrera, Pastor
