Aim:To host an annual assembly of individuals who reflect every area of the equestrian industry, to hear presentations from experts on diverse and topical aspects of the industry and allow them to share their views.

ObjEctivEs:To address and debate matters that could impact on the equestrian industry, including policy changes, scientific developments and cultural initiatives and bring them to the attention of key decision makers.

To provide a platform for the exchange of opinions, concerns and ideas on all matters relating to the equestrian industry.

To encourage and assist the equestrian industry to take greater responsibility and continuously improve standards, by providing access to the latest information and research.

To enable members of the equestrian industry to communicate with each other and advance subjects of mutual interest.

To promote the Forum, in an evolutionary manner, into an international arena in order to highlight the excellence of the British equestrian industry, its market for exports and as a vehicle to enhance our influence on the world stage.

tim brigstocke mbE Chairman, National Equine Forum

Tim Brigstocke has been Chairman of the NEF since taking over from Prof Sir Colin Spedding in 2012. He has spent his whole career in agriculture having worked in agribusiness, the Government’s research service and run the largest cattle breed society in the world.

Since 1999 he has run his own consultancy company specialising in expert witness work. He is involved with a whole host of organisations in the land based sector including being Chairman of the Royal Agricultural University’s School of Agriculture, Food and Environment Advisory Board and Chairing the UK Government’s Farm Animal Genetic Resources expert advisory committee.

Lord Gardiner Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Rural Affairs and Biosecurity, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Lord Gardiner was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on 17 July 2016. He is a Conservative member of the House of Lords.He was educated at Uppingham School and Royal Holloway, University of London, where he read modern history and politics. He served as Lord in Waiting from September 2012 to May 2015, and as Government Deputy Chief Whip and Captain of the Queen’s Bodyguard of the Yeomen of the Guard from May 2015 until July 2016.

Lord Gardiner was raised to the Peerage in 2010 and served as a party whip until being appointed to government. He served as Private Secretary to 5 successive Chairmen of the Conservative Party between 1989 and 1995. Lord Gardiner was Director of Political Affairs at the Countryside Alliance between 1995 and 2004 and Deputy Chief Executive

between 2004 and 2010. He is also a partner in a family farm. Lord Gardiner is married to the sculptor Olivia Musgrave.

Stewart founded Equine Register in 2012, and has led the business to not only become a leader in equine registration, identification and intelligence services, but Defra’s partner in delivering and managing the Central Equine Database (CED), with widespread support from the equine industry.

Equine Register has been working across the industry to develop a series of bespoke digital tools that allow the secure, real-time access to data that is vital to each sector group. These tools enable compliance, promote good owner practices, increase animal welfare and value, help secure the human food-chain and national borders, all whilst reducing criminal activity.

The CED will be launched in 2017 in conjunction with its fully digital, real-time bio-metric equine passport system. Equine Register’s cutting-edge patented technology will position the UK at the forefront of animal identification, playing key a role in the launch of Brand Britain following Brexit.

Over the past 20 years, Stewart has developed an impressive track record in taking an opportunity from inception and building the market share and critical mass necessary to deliver success. He has founded and established several businesses, in sectors such as IT, FMCG and entertainment, that have delivered award-winning technology and products with global reach.

sarah phillipsChief Operating Officer, British Horse Society

Sarah Phillips is the Chief Operating Officer for the British Horse Society. Since joining the BHS in 2009, initially as the Head of British Riding Clubs, and more recently the Director of Participation, Sarah has been responsible for ensuring that the BHS Approved Centre Scheme, for both riding schools and livery yards, meets the requirements of the industry and the riding and horse owning public. The Business Rates campaign has developed as part of the support which the BHS offers to its Approved Centres.

Prior to joining the BHS Sarah was the Event Director at Blair Castle International Horse Trials. During her seven years at the head of this world-famous event, developments saw significant growth in visitor numbers, the introduction of the

CIC*** and CCI*** competitions and the European Young Rider Championships in 2007. Sarah’s career began at Hartpury where she was instrumental in the development of the equestrian centre, and in particular the equine competitions, including international championships.

roly OwersChief Executive, World Horse Welfare

Roly Owers is a qualified veterinary surgeon and has been Chief Executive of the charity World Horse Welfare since 2008. He qualified from Cambridge University in 1992, acquired his Master’s degree in Nutrition from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1997 and his CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) in 2005.

After graduating from Cambridge, he briefly worked for the Blue Cross animal charity before joining the Royal Army Veterinary Corps for a seven-year period. His postings included the Army Dog Unit in Northern Ireland and the Household Mounted Cavalry Regiment in London. In 1999, Roly joined World Horse Welfare (then known as the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH)), with his primary focus being on fundraising. In 2003 he moved across to become Development Director of the Perse School in Cambridge before returning to the charity in January 2008.

Roly is currently Treasurer of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA), Chairman of the UK Equine Disease Coalition, a member of the Steering Group of the UK Equine Sector Council for Health and Welfare, and a Board member of the European Horse Network.

Graeme was appointed Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer for the United Kingdom in 2017. Responsibilities include supporting the Government on animal health and welfare issues, appropriate advice to Ministers, strategic planning and leading the Defra response to outbreaks of exotic animal

disease and other threats, including public health. He works closely with all UK administrations, negotiating on behalf of the UK Government with the EU and internationally. Based in Defra, Westminster, he worked there previously from 2001-2007, with responsibilities including international trade, and equine health.

Prior to joining Defra, Graeme had a non-veterinary role within the MOD.

He was a Director of the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) taking the Veterinary Department through required changes in approach to meet the demands of the modern sport, coordinating uplifts in policies and their means of delivery, including measures for integrity, the protection of the horse, and fairer competition.

He is a past member of advisory boards of the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE), the board of the International Horse Sports Confederation (IHSC), and several EU expert panels.

Previously a clinician, Graeme is from a farming background, is a Cambridge graduate, and undertook a fulltime MBA. He is a reservist in the British Army, deploying to Helmand in 2009, and is a Trustee of The Brooke Equine Charity, and on the advisory board of the University of Surrey.

Graeme and his wife have horses, one ridden in BE by her, one which is home bred and jumped professionally - he is the horsebox driver! They have been part owners of a racehorse. Just returned from travelling, riding in both Chile and Ecuador, he is undertaking the 2017 Virgin London Marathon raising funds for The Brooke and for Neuroendocrine Cancer research.

Simon is Operations Director for The General Stud Book at Weatherbys. Before joining Weatherbys in June 2016 he spent 12 years in New Zealand as a member of the senior management team of the Thoroughbred racing industry’s governing body, NZTR. During this time he sat on the boards of the NZ Equine Health Association and the NZ Equine Research Foundation on behalf of NZTR. He was also Board Secretary to NZ Riding for the Disabled.

Simon Cooper

Prior to this he worked for AtTheRaces plc in London as its first Communications Director; 8 years in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Jockey Club as Head of International Racing and Corporate Affairs Secretary; and 10 years with the International Racing Bureau. He has also served as Secretary-General of the Asian Racing Federation and represented New Zealand and Hong Kong across a number of international bodies including the Federation Internationale Des Autorites Hippiques De Courses Au Galop (IFHA), Asian Racing Federation (ARF) and as a member of the International Liaison Committee of the University of Arizona Racing Program and of the International Race Planning and Grading Advisory Committee.

He has been a journalist, magazine editor, script-writer and worked in France as a stable groom.


Nikki NewcombeChair, BETA Board; Managing Director, Bliss of London

Combining a passion for equestrianism with her experience and understanding of the saddlery industry, Nikki Newcombe – current chair of the British Equestrian Trade Association – founded bespoke saddle manufacturer Bliss of London in 2011. A Society of Master Saddlers-qualified fitter, Nikki has been involved in the equestrian trade sector for over 20 years, within wholesale and manufacturing. The daughter of an equine vet, Nikki loves eventing, hunting, breeding and bringing on her own youngsters. She lives with her daughter in Staffordshire.

Clare Salmon joined the British Equestrian Federation the National Governing Body for Equestrian Sport as CEO in June 2016.

Clare has held a broad variety of international leadership roles as a Strategist, Marketeer and General Manager, predominantly in the service sector. Originally a strategist at Boston Consulting Group, Clare is a former Strategy and Marketing Director of Prudential, Avis Europe and ITV plc. At Centrica she became the Managing Director of the AA’s financial services business and subsequently joined RSA plc as an Executive Director. Clare was then Global Brand Director of Vodafone before joining Royal London in 2013 in a similar role. She is also a former Non-Executive Director of the Alliance Trust, Freeview and Codan. Clare was a member of the British Airways Global Advisory Board, a Trustee of Breast Cancer Campaign for four years, and was an Ambassador for Scope, the leading Disability charity, from 2008-2015.

International Cycling, Cricket and Formula 1. Clare is a former Cambridge Boat race coxswain and was a competitive racing cyclist for seven years. She is a keen polo player with her own team and also a horse-racing enthusiast, as an owner and an occasional competitor. She has 20 horses at home.

ross Hamilton External Affairs Officer, British Horseracing Authority

Ross Hamilton has worked in a number of roles as part of the British Horseracing Authority’s Corporate Affairs team, and is currently Corporate Affairs Manager. Ross joined the BHA as part of the successful British Racing Graduate Development Programme in July 2011. Ross’ role focusses primarily on public affairs engagement with politicians, Government and other external bodies – representing British racing on various matters including its funding (in particular the proposed Horserace Betting Levy replacement), equine welfare, and wider gambling and sports policy. A 2010 Graduate in International Relations and Modern History from the University of St Andrews, Ross has a keen interest in politics and sports (which more often than not overlap!).

Dr sue DysonHead of Clinical Orthopaedics, Centre for Equine Studies, Animal Health Trust

Sue Dyson qualified from the University of Cambridge in 1980. After two years working in the USA, Sue returned to UK to take a position in clinical orthopaedics in the Centre for Equine Studies of the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket. Sue is currently Head of Equine Clinical Orthopaedics, running a clinical referral service for lameness and poor performance, attracting clients from all over the UK, Ireland and continental Europe.

Sue is a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), holds the RCVS Diploma in Equine Orthopaedics and is recognised as a ‘Specialist in Equine Orthopaedics’ by the RCVS. Sue is also an Associate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging.

Sue is co-editor of Diagnosis and Management of Lameness in the Horse and co-author of Clinical Radiology of the Horse and Equine Scintigraphy. She has published more than 270 papers in peer reviewed journals concerning lameness and diagnostic imaging and has lectured worldwide. Sue is a former President of the British Equine Veterinary Association. Sue is also a rider, and has produced horses to top national level in both eventing and show jumping, is a British Horse Society Instructor and veterinary advisor to the Saddle Research Trust.

Neil graduated from Bristol University in 2004 with an intercalated degree in Equine Science. Following a brief period in mixed practice he joined Liverpool University for 12 months as an intern, then Edinburgh University as a Resident in Equine Surgery, gaining the RCVS soft tissue surgery certificate and an MSc. He rejoined Liverpool University as a Clinician in Surgery and attained European Diplomas in Equine Surgery and Equine Dentistry before joining Three Counties Equine Hospital in October 2015.

His clinical interests involve all aspects of equine surgery but with particular interest in upper respiratory tract and sinus surgery, along with minimally invasive surgery. He is interested in all aspects of equine dentistry including restorative techniques.

Dr caroline benoistManager of Research and Education, The Academy by Neue Schule

Dr. Caroline Benoist is the Manager of Research and Education for The NS Academy Ltd. developed as a part of the Neue Schule Group of company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility by dispelling misconceptions in bits and bitting through sound science. Dr. Benoist holds a B.Sc. in biology and Ph.D. in neuroscience, she is the author of several peer-reviewed publications for her work in developing an anti-dementia drug and has extensive teaching experience at both the university and elementary levels. Since re-focusing her passion for research to lorinery science, she has secured Lantra Awards approved status for the Academy, developed new courses and created strong ties with equine colleges that are now committed to delivering the Academy courses. NS Academy research that Caroline coordinates examines the effects of the bit on a horse and how this knowledge can be used to improve the welfare of horses.

Epidemiology at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow.

He qualified from the University of Bristol with degrees in Zoology (1992) and Veterinary Science (1998). He completed his PhD on the epidemiology of fractures in racehorses, at the University of Liverpool, in 2002 and has worked on numerous projects with racing jurisdictions around the world, including the UK, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, South America and the USA. He gained his Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Public Health in 2006 and has worked at the University of Glasgow since 2007.

He currently sits on the: Veterinary Advisory Committee of World Horse Welfare; Scientific Advisory Committee of the PetPlan Charitable Trust; Editorial Consultant Board of Equine Veterinary Journal and is an Assistant Editor for the Veterinary Record. He was President of the Society for Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine in 2012/13.

Most importantly, he is passionate about making sure as many people who really need to know get to hear about academic work that could maximise the health and welfare of the horse.

Andrea vilelaEducation & Campaigns Manager, Redwings Horse Sanctuary

Andrea has a Masters in Gender Analysis and International Development from the University of East Anglia and she has over a decade of experience in the charity sector including working as a policy advisor for an international development charity.

A former Pony Club member, Andrea has now brought her campaigning and community development experience and her passion for horses to the equine sector, where she has been working with Redwings for nearly three years overseeing the charity’s education and campaigns work.

Andrea is passionate about supporting horse owners to make the best choices for their horses and her particular areas of interest include equine behaviour, farriery and foot care and working with horse owners on the fringes of the UK equine industry. She’s an advocate of Human Behaviour Change as a means to improve equine welfare, and she was a speaker at the inaugural International HBC Conference for Animal Welfare in 2016.

The Redwings Strangles Survey was devised and developed with support from the University of Liverpool, in particular Dr Claire Scantlebury, a Research Fellow in Functional and Comparative Genomics, whose advice and guidance have been invaluable throughout its development, implementation and resulting analysis.

prof josh slater Professor in Equine Clinical Studies, Royal Veterinary College

Josh graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1985 and spent 4 years in equine practice before moving to a residency in equine medicine at the University of Cambridge. He completed a PhD in equine virology in 1994 and was a lecturer, then senior lecturer in equine medicine at Cambridge. He moved to the Royal Veterinary College, London in 2005 where he is professor of equine clinical studies. He has research interests in equine infectious diseases, in particular equine respiratory disease. He is a past president of the British Equine Veterinary Association, the European College of Equine Internal Medicine and the Federation of European Equine Veterinary Associations. He is currently chair of trustees at the Horse Trust and is a director the British Animal Rescue and Trauma Care Association. He was biosecurity advisor to the Hong Kong Government for the 2008 Equestrian Olympic Games, the National Technical Official for biosecurity at the London 2012 Equestrian Olympic Games and biosecurity advisor for the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy.

and Fundraising for The Outward Bound Trust, Lynn worked closely with HRH Prince Andrew in transforming the charity with modern management strategies. In 2010, she travelled to Ethiopia for the Swiss charity Rainbows for Children where she became Head of the Nicolas Robinson primary school and is now on the Board of Governors.

Lynn has been Chief Executive of The British Horse Society for the past four years. During this time the Society has launched a number of initiatives including the Dead Slow Campaign, addressing the issues facing riders on the road and asking drivers to slow down when driving past horses. They have continued to increase their representation of equestrians within Parliament and are currently leading a campaign relating to the increase in business rates facing equestrian centres and livery yards. The Society is currently undertaking a major update on their Education system to ensure it fully addresses the needs of the industry.

Sir Colin Spedding Award Finalists 2017

He ensured that representatives of all areas of the equine sphere were made welcome, and that topics of general interest and concern could be discussed openly and without rancour. His aim was to allow the equine world to consider and then speak with a coordinated voice on matters of the moment. The award is presented in his memory.

The Sir Colin Spedding Award will be presented annually, but only when there is a candidate of sufficient merit, to an individual or an organisation that has made an exceptional contribution to the world of horses, ponies or donkeys. This contribution may be in connection with one or more specific projects, or may be over an extended period of time.

In 2017 we are delighted to have shortlisted three candidates of great merit as finalists for the Sir Colin Spedding Award. All have made significant contributions to the equine industry and we look forward to recognising this today.

Jim Green has been nominated in recognition of his dedication to the development of large animal rescue

methodology, training and equipment that is now standard throughout the UK Fire and Rescue Service and being rolled out worldwide.

Maureen James has been nominated in recognition of her outstanding commitment to the Side Saddle Association since 1974, the development of the discipline of side saddle riding, and her other work with voluntary organisations.

Bonny Millar has been nominated in recognition of her significant contribution to the advancement nationally of the education of equine veterinary nurses, including helping to develop the first qualification for equine veterinary nurses in the UK, and improvements in equine nursing care.
