OVERVIEWThis Service Manual contains information about the specifications, replacement procedures,checking/calibration procedures, and troubleshooting of common problems associate with theD500. A total of five topics are covered herein, and they are organized as follows:

Section 1: Overview

Section 2: Basic and Interface Specifications

Section 3: Replacement Procedures

Section 4: Adjustment Procedures

Section 5: Troubleshooting

The Basic Specifications section summarizes all the mechanical, electrical and engineeringspecifications needed for service personnel to understand this product.

The Interface Specifications section serves as a guide to personnel who need to understandthe communication protocols needed to control the printer using third party software, and fortroubleshooting interface problems.

The Troubleshooting section aids in the process of diagnosing and correcting commonproblems. After troubleshooting, the service personnel can then determine whether any repairs,parts replacements and/or adjustments are necessary,

The Replacement Procedures section covers the main components of the product, and how theservice personnel can dismantle and reassemble the parts in order to maintain, clean, repair orreplace them.

Finally, the Adjustment Procedures are needed after certain maintenance or repair workinvolving certain precision component.

It is recommended that you become familiar with each section before attempting to service theproduct. Refer to the Table Of Contents at the front of this manual to search for the relevantinformation needed. All page numbers in this manual consist of a section number followed by thepage number within the stated section.

INTRODUCTION

The Lexmark D500 Direct Thermal Printer is a complete, high-performance on-site labelingsystem. All printer parameters are user programmable using PCL software commands. Allpopular bar codes and 9 human-readable fonts, are resident in memory providing literallyhundreds of typestyles and sizes. Additional fonts can be loaded into memory.

Employing a thermal 305dpi print head, the D500 produces sharp looking graphics and smallpoint-size text with excellent legibility. It can print labels up to four inches in width and providesan economical labeling solution for most applications. The printer is compatible with a subset ofthe Printer Command Language 5e (PCL). In addition, users can choose an interface—such asparallel (IEEE1284), serial (RS-232C), Ethernet (10/100-BaseT), USB 1.1and Wireless LANIEEE 802.11b.

UNPACKING

When unpacking the printer, take note of the following:

Note: The following parts shown here are representative only. Due to regional requirements and our policy ofcontinual improvement, your printer may not be packed with the exact parts as shown here, but theunpacking steps are similar.

The box should stay right-side up.Lift the printer out of the box carefully.

If the printer has been stored in the cold, allow it to reach room temperature before turning it on.

Remove the plastic covering from the printer.

Set the printer on a solid, flat surface. Inspect the shipping container and printer for any sign of damage that may have occurred during shipping.

Remove the accessory items from their protective containers.

SETTING UP THE PRINTERConsider the following when setting up the printer:

Locate a solid flat surface with adequate room to set the printer. Make sure the AC adaptor can be located so that the AC power cable can be attached to the printer and an AC power outlet. The location should be near the host or computer terminal. The maximum distance recommended is:

- 10 feet for a Parallel interface cable. Make sure it meets IEEE1284 specifications

- 18 feet for the optional Serial RS232 Interface

- 10 feet for the optional USB interface without hub

- the optional 10baseT Ethernet Interface depends upon the LAN cabling

- Up to 100m for the Wireless LAN, depending on structural conditions

Follow these steps to set up your printer:

1. Make sure the power switch on the Operator Panel is in the OFF (0) position and place the AC adaptor in a safe and secure location.

2. Connect the Input Power connector to the printer. This connector is buttoned and must be turned approximately 3/4 turn clockwise to secure it to the printer.

3. Connect the AC Power Cable to the adapter inlet and then to an AC Outlet supply of an appropriate voltage.

4. Connect the interface cable to the host system. If you are using the Parallel Port connection, a parallel IEEE1284 interface cable must be used to realize the high data transfer rate of the printer's parallel port. If another interface is installed, the appropriate cable should be used.

5. Load the label media following the instructions in this section.

6. Configure the printer for label width and operating mode using the instructions in this section.

7. Press the printer power button to the ON (I) position.8. Print a test label to verify the printer is set up and operating correctly.

LOADING MEDIAThe Lexmark D500 printer can print to direct thermal die-cut labels, tags or continuous media. The media supply can be either in Roll or Fanfold format.

Roll MediaRoll media should be between 0.98" (25 mm) and 4.3" (110 mm) in width and wound face-out on a core with a minimum internal diameter of 1.6" (40 mm).

1. Make sure the printer is turned OFF.

2. Open the Top Cover by pressing on cover release points located on the right-hand side of the printer. This releases the Top Cover and allows it to swing upward on the rear mounted hinge points.

3. With the Top Cover in the upright position, press the Paper Guide Release while adjusting the Paper Guides until they allow a media roll to fit between them. A millime-ter scale is molded into the case to provide a guide when making the adjustment. The Paper Guides are center justified and inter-act with each other so that each moves an equal distance.

4. Make sure the Roll Holders are in the released position. If they are not, lift up on each one and they will snap to the open position.

5. Unwind approximately 12" of label material from the roll. The labels should be wound face-out (printing side to the outside of the roll). Drop the roll in-between the Paper Guides so that the labels come off the top of the roll. The Paper Guides will automati-cally position the Roll Holders to suspend the roll.

6. Route the label material through the Paper Sensor Assembly and over the Platen. Note that the Sensor is part of the left Label Roll Guide so that the Paper Sensor is always positioned in the same location relative to the left edge of the label.

7. Close the Top Cover.

8. Press the LINE button so that the printer is in the OFF LINE mode and then press the FEED button. The label should advance to the next index position.

Fanfold media

1. Place the fanfold media behind the printerwith the printing surface up.

2. Open the Top Cover by pressing on the cover release latch located on the right-hand side of the printer. This releases the cover and allows it to swing upward on the rear mounted hinge points.

3. Carefully pull up the Fanfold-label Loading Slot from the back of the Top Cover.

4. With the Top Cover in the upright position, press the Paper Guide Release while adjust-ing the Paper Guides until they allow a media to fit between them. A millimeter scale is molded into the case to provide a guide when making the adjustment. The Paper Guides are center-justified and interact with each other so that each moves an equal distance apart from each other.

5. Route the label material through the Sensor Assembly and over the Platen.

6. Close the Top Cover.

7. After loading the label media, it is recommended that you run a Test Print to make sure the labels are correctly loaded and printed.

LABEL SENSINGThe Lexmark D500 can use either label Gap (see-thru) sensing or Eye-Mark (reflective) sensing. The Sensor Assembly is located on the left edge of the media and is automatically positioned by the Paper Guides.

CONFIGURATIONBefore using the printer, it is best to read this manual thoroughly first. Otherwise, you may disturb default settings around which the instructional procedures in this manual are based upon.

OPERATING PANELThe Operator Panel consists of three LED indicators and three switches.

POWERThe green LED lights up when the printer is ON.

ERRORThe red LED lights up when there is a system fault such as an unlatched print head.

ON LINEThe green LED lights up when the printer is ON LINE and ready to receive data. The ON LINE button takes the printer ON LINE or OFF LINE.

ON LINE ButtonIf the ONLINE LED is lit, pressing it will take the printer OFF LINE. Pressing the button again then takes the printer back ON LINE. When ON LINE, the printer is ready to receive data from the host. When OFF LINE, the printer will not print or accept data from the host. While the printer is printing, press this button to suspend the printing. To resume printing, press this button again.

FEED BUTTONPress this button to eject one label in OFF LINE mode. Hold this button down while power is applied, to print a printer status label.

THE CONFIGURATION PANEL

The Configuration Panel is accessible when you lift up the top cover. The panel consists of an eight-position DIP switch, three adjustment potentiometers and a seven- segment LED Error Status display. Receptacles for connecting the optional Cutter (factory installed) are also located on this panel.

DIP SWITCH SETTINGS

This is an eight-position switch used for setting the operating conditions of the printer. Switches 1 to 3 act as control for both paper handling and the loading of programs or fonts into the printer.

Switches 1–3: Paper Handling settingsThese three switches select the method used for controlling paper handling:

Continuous mode - (default mode) Does not use the sensor for paper indexing. The paper movement will stop after all the label data has been printed.

Tear Off mode - Paper is fed out to the cut/tear off position after printing is complete. Before the next label is printed, the paper is pulled back in to the first print line position.

Cutter mode - Enables the Cutter option if installed.

Enables or Disables the printer function that checks the print head automatically.

Switch 6: VR1 Potentiometer Adjustment mode

Selects the function adjusted by VR1, VR4 Potentiometer Adjustment mode, and VR4. If DSW6 is Off, VR4 adjusts the top of form offset value over a range of +/- 3.75 mm. When DSW6 is On, VR1 adjusts the print darkness range.

Switch 7: DATA DumpWhen ON, the printer will print out the hex value for each character received. When OFF, the printer will accept and process the data stream in a normal fashion. Four-inch wide media is required to print all data.

Switch 8: UnusedThis switch is reserved for future use.

OFFSETSThere are two offset settings stored in the printer; one for the Cut mode and one for the Tear-Off mode.

These two offsets can be set independently and will remain in the printer until a new command is received changing the setting or until power is turned off.

The default settings can be determined by printing a User Test Label.

The following should be used as starting points for establishing the three Offset values:

THE RECEIVE BUFFERThis printer has the ability to receive a data stream from the host in one of two ways. The receive buffer may be configured to accept one print job at a time or multiple print jobs. The single job print buffer is generally used by software programs that wish to maintain control of the job print queue so that it can move a high priority job in front of ones of lesser importance. The multiple job buffer, on the other hand prints all jobs in the order they are received by the printer, and the order of printing cannot be changed.

Single Job BufferThe printer receives and prints one job at a time. Each job must not exceed 2.95MB.

Multi Job BufferThe printer is able to continuously receive print jobs, compiling and printing other jobs at the same time. It acts much like a “print buffer” to maximize the performance of the host and the printer.

When you are using the RS232 Serial interface, the Multi Job Buffer uses either the Ready/Busy with DTR (pin 20) or X-On/X-Off flow control protocols. With an empty receiving buffer, the status of DTR is “high” (or an X-On status if using X-On/X-Off), meaning the printer is ready to receive data. When the receive buffer is holding 1.95MB of data (1MB from being full), DTR will go “low” (or an X-Off is sent) indicating the printer can no longer receive data. This condition is called “Buffer Near Full.”

The receiving buffer will not be able to receive more data again until a “Buffer Available” condition occurs. This takes place when the receiving buffer has emptied so that only 1MB bytes of data are being held (1.95MB bytes from being full). At this time, DTR will go “high” or an X-On is sent to tell the host that it can again receive data.

All printer error conditions (i.e., label out, Time-out Error, etc) will cause the printer to go busy (DTR “low” or X-Off) until the problem is corrected and the printer is placed on-line. The printer will also be busy if taken off-line from the front panel.

IEEE1284 PARALLEL INTERFACEThe parallel interface for this printer conforms to the IEEE1284 specification. It will automatically detect the IEEE1284 signals and operate in the high speed mode. If it does not detect the IEEE1284 signals, it will operate in the standard Centronics mode, which is significantly slower. For this reason, an interface cable and host interface conforming to the IEEE1284 specification must be present to fully utilize the speed capabilities. This interface also operates bidirectionally and can report the status of the printer back to the host.

It goes low when the printer is off-line, either manually or due to an error condition, and while printing in the Sin-gle Job Buffer mode. It will also go low when the data in the buffer reaches the Buffer Near Full level.

* This connection at the host side of the interface would depend upon the pin that is being used as the Ready/Busy signal by the driving software. Typically, on a PC, it would be either CTS (pin 5) or DSR (pin 6) on a DB-25 connector.

READY/BUSY FLOW CONTROLReady/Busy is the hardware flow control method for the serial interface on the printer. By raising/lowering the voltage level on Pin 20 of the RS232 port, the printer notifies the host when it is ready to receive data. Pin 4 (RTS) and pin 20 (DTR) are the important signals on the printer for this method of flow control. The host must be capable of supporting this flow control method for it to function properly.

X-ON/X-OFF FLOW CONTROL

X-On/X-Off flow control is used whenever hardware (Ready/Busy) flow control is not available or desirable. Instead of a voltage going high/low at pin 20, control characters representing “Printer Ready” (X-On =11 hexadecimal) or “Printer Busy” (X-Off = 13 hexadecimal) are transmitted by the printer on pin 2 (Transmit Data) to the host. In order for this method of flow control to function correctly, the host must be capable of supporting it. X-On/X-Off operates in a manner similar to the function of pin 20 (DTR) as previously explained. When the printer is first powered on it sends an X-Off when the “Buffer Near Full” level is reached and a X-On when the data level of the buffer drops below the “Buffer Available” mark. When the printer is taken off-line manually, it transmits an X-Off indicating it cannot accept data. When it is placed back on line manually, it sends an X-On, indicating it is again available for receipt of data. If an error occurs during printing (paper out, Time Out), the printer sends an X-Off as soon as an error condition is detected. When the error is cleared and the printer is placed back on-line, it transmits an X-On indicating it is again ready to accept data.

INTERFACE TROUBLESHOOTINGThis unit provides a checklist for the various interface types. Locate the checklist relative to theinterface used and perform each of the troubleshooting tasks until the problem has been isolated.

PARALLEL INTERFACE

CHK TROUBLESHOOTING STEP

Ensure the interface card is correctly installed. Run self-test to verify.

Ensure the printer cable is connected to the appropriate LPT port on the host computer. If using aWindows printer driver, ensure the correct port is selected.

Ensure a IEEE1284 printer cable is being used.

Ensure the host’s peripheral settings are set to ECP for faster throughput. Refer to the computermanufacturer’s documentation for details.

Ensure the printer is receiving information from the computer using the Receive Buffer Data Dumpmode. Refer to that procedure within this manual for instructions. The command stream should becontinuous and possess 0Dhex and/or 0Ahex (carriage return and line feed) charactersthroughout.

Replace the interface board with another to isolate the problem.

Replace the interface board permanently if determined to be the problem.

RS-232 SERIAL INTERFACE

Ensure that a faulty print server or other protocol related scenarios are not creating a queue setupissue. Systematically perform checks and tests to isolate the cause.

If using TCP/IP, ensure a valid IP address is specified and that all parameters are correct (subnetmask, gateway, etc.). Attempt to PING the IP address assigned to the network interface.

Install the IPX/SPX protocol on a workstation to determine if the network device can be discoveredvia the MAC address. If able, configure the appropriate protocols and retest connectivity.

Use a crossover cable to isolate the printer from the network by connecting from the interface andworkstation. Verify that the parameters match on each. Test connectivity.

WIRELESS LAN INTERFACE

CHK TROUBLESHOOTING STEP

Ensure the interface has been correctly configured. Wait two minutes and run self-test to verify. If atest label does not print, there may be a hardware problem.

Check the Wireless LAN connection by using the Ping command. If the Ping fails, double-check allWLAN hardware and connection settings. Print test labels to verify that the new settings can work.

If the Ping test is OK, check the printer’s location to adequate signal strength. For weak signals, tryrelocating the printer close to the access point. If the signal strength is high, replace the WLANinterface card.

UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS (USB) INTERFACEIf nothing prints during a test print, verify the device drivers have been successivelyinstalled by performing the following:

Click on Start, Settings, and then Control Panel.

Click on System within the new window.

Click on the Device Manager tab.

Ensure that the View Device By Type is checked.

Scroll to printer driver for your Lexmark device. Ensure that errors do not exist. Reinstall the driveras required.

Reboot the PC and the printer.

Contact Microsoft technical support for further assistance as required.

HANDLING ESD-SENSITIVE PARTSMany electronic products use parts that are known to be sensitive to electrostatic discharge(ESD). To prevent damage to ESD-sensitive parts, follow the instructions below in addition to allthe usual precautions, such as turning off power before removing system board:

• Keep the ESD-sensitive part in its original shipping container (a special “ESD bag”) until you are ready to install the part into the machine.

• Make as few movements as possible with your body to prevent an increase of static electric-ity from clothing fibers, carpets, and furniture.

• Put the ESD wrist strap on your wrist. Connect the wrist band to the system ground point. This discharges any static electricity in your body to the machine.

• Hold the ESD-sensitive part by its edge connector shroud (cover); do not touch its pins. If you are removing a pluggable module, use the correct tool.

• Do not place the ESD-sensitive part on the machine cover or on a metal table; if you need to put down the ESD-sensitive part for any reason, first put it into its special bag.

• Machine covers and metal tables are electrical grounds. They increase the risk of damage because they make a discharge path from your body through the ESD-sensitive part. (Large metal objects can be discharge paths without being grounded.)

• Prevent ESD-sensitive parts from being accidentally touched by other personnel. Install machine covers when you are not working on the machine, and do not put unprotected ESD-sensitive parts on a table.

• If possible, keep all ESD-sensitive parts in a grounded metal cabinet (case).• Be extra careful in working with ESD-sensitive parts when cold-weather heating is used,

because low humidity increases static electricity.

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURESThis unit contains step-by-step instructions for the removal and replacement of all primarycomponents and sub-assemblies.

ACCESSING THE MAIN BOARDTo access the main board, follow the instructions below.

1 Turn the printer OFF and disconnect the power supply cord from the wall outlet.

2 Place the printer with its underside facing upward.

3 Remove the bottom housing cover (See Figure below) by removing four screws.

4 Put the screws in a safe place so that they can be used to re-secure the bottom housingcover when servicing is complete.

PRINT HEAD REPLACEMENTIf the print head becomes damaged or worn, it can be easily removed and replaced withouthaving to make critical adjustments.

1 Turn the printer OFF and disconnect the power supply cord from the wall outlet.

2 Lift up the top housing cover (1) (See Figure 4-1) to access the print head assembly.

3 Press the central release latch (2) to release the print head (3) from the bracket (4).

4 Disconnect the wiring harness from worn print head (3).

5 Connect the print head wiring harness to the replacement print head (3).

6 Latch the replacement print head (3) into the head bracket (2).

7 Load some media, close the cover, and do a test print to confirm proper function.

PLATEN ROLLER REPLACEMENTThe platen roller is a high wear component due to its treading against the print media. Thistreading will eventually wear grooves into the rubber material and negatively affect print output.

1 Turn the printer OFF and disconnect the power supply cord from the wall outlet.

2 Lift up the top housing cover (1) (See Figure 4-2) to access the platen roller (2).

3 Detach the platen gear cover (3) from the printer housing (4).

4 Lift the dispenser bar (5) upward and away from the assembly (2, 5).

5 Install a replacement platen roller assembly (5, 2) to the housing (4).

6 Lower the dispenser bar (5) and reattach the gear cover (3).

7 Load some media, close the cover, and do a test print to ensure proper function.

MAIN CIRCUIT BOARD REPLACEMENT1 Turn the printer OFF and disconnect the power supply cord from the wall outlet.

2 Remove the base cover from the housing cover to access the main circuit board.

3 Remove the five screws (1) (See Figure 4-4) that secure the main circuit board (2) to theprinter (3).

4 Disconnect all wiring harnesses from the defective main circuit board (2).

5 Remove the defective main circuit board (2), along with the interface cover (4), from theprinter (3).

6 Detach the interface cover (4) from the defective board (2) and attach it to the replacementboard (2).

7 Insert the replacement main circuit board (2) into the printer (3) and secure it using the fivescrews (1) previously removed from the old board.

8 Reconnect all the appropriate wiring harnesses to the replacement circuit board (2).

9 Attach the base cover to the housing cover.

10 Load some media, and run some tests to confirm proper function.

11 Perform adjustments as necessary.

DRIVE MOTOR REPLACEMENT1 Turn the printer OFF and disconnect the power supply cord from the wall outlet.

DRIVE GEAR REPLACEMENT1 Turn the printer OFF and disconnect the power supply cord from the wall outlet.

CUTTER ASSEMBLY

CAUTION: Cutter assembly is made up of parts with sharp edges. To avoid injury usecaution when working around the cutter assembly.

The cutter assembly is an optional unit typically pre installed at the factory. To retrofit a D500printer that was not originally delivered with a cutter, follow the procedures here but make sure toorder the complete set of components that also includes the cutter alignment assembly thatmounts near the print head.

1 Turn off the printer and disconnect the power supply cord from the wall outlet.

2 Open top housing cover (1) and remove front cover (2) from printer base (3).

3 Connect the cutter unit’s wiring harness to the accessory connector.

4 Pivot the dispenser bar (4) upward (Figure 4-1a) to permit cutter assembly (5) installation.

8 Press latch (7, Figure 4-1b) to release print head (8) from mounting bracket (9). Lift awayprint head (8).

9 Remove two screws (10) securing alignment assembly (11) to mounting bracket (9). Liftaway (11).

10 Remove two screws (12) securing upper plate (13) to lower plate (14) and separate.

ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURESThis unit covers all of the printer adjustment procedures that may occur following the initial configuration.

TOP OF FORMS OFFSETThis can be done using the VR4 potentiometer on the Configuration Panel. This potentiometer is set at the factory so that it has a range of +/-3.75 mm. The midpoint setting should have no effect on the label top of form. Turning the potentiometer all the way clockwise should move the print position 3.75 mm upwards towards the leading edge of the label. Turning the it all the way counterclockwise should move the print position down 3.75mm away from the leading edge of the label.

1 Place DSW6 on the Configuration Switch in the OFF position.

2 Turn the power OFF.

3 While pressing the FEED button on the Operator Panel, turn the power ON.

4 When you hear one beep from the printer, release the FEED button.

5 Press the LINE button to begin printing large Test Labels (press the FEED button if you are using labels smaller than 4.1" (104 mm) in width).

6 Adjust potentiometer VR4 until the first print position is at the desired location on the label.

7 Press the FEED button to stop printing.

Note: Adjusting the Label Top Of Form with VR4 will affect the stop position of the label and the cut/tear-off positions.

FACTORY CLEARThis procedure clears all data from the EEPROM. Once initialized and completed, the process cannot be reversed.

1 Open the Top Cover and remove the front cover.

2 Switch ON the DSW5 and DSW6 dip switches.

3 Press and hold the LINE and FEED buttons while switching on the printer.

4 Release the LINE and FEED buttons when a beep sounds.

5 Switch OFF the DSW5 and DSW6 dip switches and latch the Top Cover closed.

PRINT DARKNESSA fine adjustment for PRINT DARKNESS can be made using potentiometer VR1 on the Front Operator Panel. It provides a continuous range of adjustment, allowing you to make precise changes. Turning VR1 clockwise will make the print darker, and counterclockwise will make it lighter.

1 Place DSW6 on the Configuration Switch in the ON position.

2 Turn the Power Switch OFF.

3 While pressing the FEED button on the Operator Panel, turn the Power Switch ON.

4 When you hear one beep from the printer, release the FEED button.

5 Press the LINE button to begin printing large Test Labels (press the FEED button if you are using labels smaller than 4.1" (104 mm) in width).

6 Adjust potentiometer VR1 until the desired print darkness is obtained.

7 Press the FEED button to stop the printing.

Adjustment of the Print Darkness using VR1 will affect the darkness range adjustable using the PCL command @PJL SET SPEED= [2 - 4]. That is, if the print darkness is adjusted with VR1 for lighter print, the print will be lighter in all the Print Darkness ranges selected by the @PJL SET SPEED command.

EYE-MARK SENSOR ADJUSTMENT

Required equipment:

• Number 2 Phillips Screwdriver• DC Multimeter

1 Power OFF the printer before attaching the Multimeter leads to the meter.

2 Rotate VR2 fully counterclockwise.

3 Place the Multimeter in the DC mode.

4 Connect an insulated Negative (-) ground probe from the Multimeter to Pin 3 (GRD) of CN3 on the configuration panel.

5 Connect an insulated Positive (+) probe from the Multimeter to Pin 2 of CN3.

6 Power ON the printer.

7 For Low level (no “Eye-Mark” part) adjustment, put the paper part in the sensor. Then adjust the electrical level with VR2 so that it will measure +0.5V +/- 0.2V.

8 For High level (“Eye-Mark” part) adjustment, put paper part in the senor and check the electrical level. If the level difference is +1.2V more than the Low level, it is acceptable. If not, return to Step 7 and readjust.

9 Standard values: Low level (no “Eye-Mark”): +0.5V +/- 0.2V High level (“Eye-Mark”): Low level + 1.2V or higher. If these values do not result, try the following:

a) Repeat the process b) Clean the sensor c) Verify the sensor is operational d) Replace labels with higher quality labels e) Perform factory reset

POWER SUPPLY CHECKSObtain a DC Multimeter and Number 2 Phillips screwdriver for this check. To check voltage levels, first check the Main PCB fuse (see next page) and replace it if necessary. Then follow the steps below:

1 Turn the printer OFF.

2 Set the multimeter to DC mode.

3 Attach the negative (-) lead from the multimeter to Pin 3 (GND) of CN3 on the configuration panel.

4 Attach the positive (+) lead from the multimeter to Pin 4 of CN3 on the configuration panel.

5 Turn the printer ON.

6 Confirm that the voltages are correct. If not, remove the power connector from the rear of the printer, connect the test probes to Pin 1 (+) and Pin 4 (-) and measure the voltages.

DATA DUMP DIAGNOSTIC LABELThe contents of the printer buffer can be examined using the DATA Dump mode. This printout labels each line of the received data in the left hand column, the data in the middle column followed by the same data in ASCII format in the right-hand column. Four-inch wide media is required to print all data.

1 Turn the printer OFF.

2 Place DSW7 on the configuration Switch in the ON position.

3 Turn the printer ON.

4 Transmit data to the printer.

5 The data received is printed on the label.

6 Place DSW7 in the OFF position.

PRINTING TEST LABELS1 The User Test Label prints the current default settings of the printer.

2 Press the FEED button while turning the power ON.

3 When the printer beeps, release the FEED button.

4 To print a large (4" wide) test label, press the ON LINE button. To print a small (2" wide) test label, press the FEED button.

5 The printer will continuously print the USER TEST LABEL until the FEED button is pressed. If the FEED button is pressed another time, printing will resume.

PRINTING FACTORY/SERVICE TEST PRINTSThe Factory/Service Test Label prints the internal operating parameters of the printer.

1 Power the printer off.

2 Open the top cover.

3 Press the LINE and FEED buttons while turning the printer ON.

4 When the printer beeps, release the LINE and FEED buttons. The printer will then beep 3 times indicating it is in the Factory/Service Print Test mode.

5 Close the top cover.

6 Press the LINE button to print a large (4" wide) Factory/Service Test Label. Press the FEED button to print a small (2" wide) Factory/Service Test Label.

7 The printer will begin printing a series of test labels, the first containing the operational parameters of the printer followed by one containing the internal printer settings. These two label formats will alternate until the FEED button is pressed, suspending the print operation. If the FEED button is pressed again, the printing will resume.

To remove the printer from the Factory/Service Print Test mode, remove power by placing the POWER switch in the OFF position.

LABELS AND SPECIALTY MEDIA GUIDELINES FOR THERMAL PRINTINGCaution: THERMAL LABELS ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO FADING. Thermal labels

require special coatings to help lessen fading/damage from heat, moisture, humidity, chemicals, UV light, etc. However, even with special coatings, ther-mal labels will fade over time. You should contact your media supplier for questions pertaining to any life issues with your thermal labels.

Thermal print media can be paper, paper labels and vinyl labels. The labels have a variety ofcoatings and inking that can be applied to them. Selecting the appropriate print media for thethermal printer helps you avoid contamination issues and printing problems.

The heat and pressure that is required by a direct thermal printer can create a particularly difficultenvironment for printing labels. Temperatures and pressures vary between thermal printers, soyou should use labels that have been designed for use with thermal printers and theircharacteristics. Since printhead life can be shortened with increased contact pressure andlabel contaminates, it is important to understand the media thickness, coatings and inksthat the label supplier is using and how these characteristics can impact the printheadlife.

To prevent labels from peeling off or delaminating, make sure the release strength of the labelsyou use is sufficient to withstand the temperature and pressure extremes generated duringprinting.

Before purchasing large quantities of labels, you should extensively test labels for bothapplication requirements and printer compatibility. You should verify that the labels being testedmeet your application expectations in the areas of chemical resistance, scuff resistance, UVresistance, heat resistance, and manufacturing consistency. Since inks and topcoats canincrease the risk of print head contamination, the label that is tested should have the inks andtopcoats that are to be used in the final design of the label. The primary areas to review duringthese tests are: printhead contamination, feed reliability, printer contamination and label fadingissues.

Base materials, inks and topcoats are all important components of label durability, so the labelsshould be engineered to prevent diminishing the life of the printhead. Also, be aware that thesecritical factors —such as the physical characteristics of the base stock, inks, topcoats and themanufacturing processes—may change over time. Your label supplier should be able to helpwith any label concerns you encounter.

LABEL CHARACTERISTICSLabels are multi-ply materials consisting of a “sandwich” of various combinations of face sheets(printable stock), adhesives, and removable protective backings (liners). Labels are among themost difficult print materials for any printer to feed and print reliably.

The materials used to construct labels have a wide range of properties that can affect printing.We recommend that volatile emissions from the label should be a minimal amount. Preprintedinks can also cause printhead contamination.

Paper dust can cause damage to the thermal printer. It is important that the label converter orvendor provides media that is clean and free of paper debris. Excessive paper dust can damagethe printhead and cause other print quality issues. It is very important that the printhead iscleaned at least every time a label roll is changed or more often in harsh environments. See“Printhead Care” on page 7-2.

Observing recommended label design guidelines can minimize contamination as well as preventother critical problems, such as labels peeling off and causing jams in the printer, or the label oradhesive melting if the sheet sticks to the printhead.

Review label designs with a converter or vendor who is knowledgeable about labels and thermalprinter characteristics to ensure you use labels suitable for your applications.

ENVIRONMENTTemperature and humidity can have an impact on printing. Follow the guidelines suggested bythe label converter or vendor for conditioning and storage of the media.

INKS (PREPRINTED STOCK)/TOPCOATSPreprinted stock can introduce volatile components in the thermal printing process with the heatand pressure in the system. Preprinted inks and coloration must withstand the temperature andpressure within the thermal printer without contaminating the printer or creating hazardousfumes.

Preprinted inks must be abrasion resistant to reduce ink dust and ink contamination in the printer.Preprinted inks can increase the risk of printhead contamination.

All preprinted inks must be thoroughly dry before using printed materials. Check with your labelsupplier to determine if the ink and topcoats that are being used are compatible with thermalprinters.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCEINTRODUCTIONThis section provides information on user maintenance for the D500 printers. This sectioncontains the following information.

• Adjusting the Print Quality• Cleaning the Print Head, Platen and Rollers• Replacing the Print Head• Cleaning the Sensor

PRINTHEAD CARETo ensure optimum life and overall print quality from the Lexmark D500 printer, one must takesteps to alleviate potential damage to the printhead and rollers due to the operation andconsumables being used. The print head in will over time deteriorate due the nature of itsapplication. The printhead is made of several heater elements (dots) per millimeter, whichdictates the overall printhead resolution. It is protected with a thin glass coating and whenenergized produce heat that will transfer an image directly when using direct thermal media.Since the printhead is a critical component, it is essential to optimize its longevity through properoperational settings, maintenance and use of matched media combinations. There are severalreasons why a printhead can have a shortened life expectancy:

• Overdriving the Printhead • Excessive Abrasion • Abusive Contact • Electrostatic Discharge • Impurities

The printhead is one of the most delicate, critical and expensive components contained in athermal printer. The printhead wears from friction and heat used in the printing process. In orderto maximize the printhead life, you must handle and maintain the printhead properly and attemptto avoid those issues outlined above. The printer needs to be cleaned properly and regularly.General recommendations are after each roll of direct thermal. If using less than desirable highquality materials or if environmental conditions warrant, you may need to frequent theseprocedures. You should refer to the documentation in this section for the specifics of thesecleaning techniques. Of course the most critical component to clean is the printhead, but careshould also be taken for cleaning the roller assemblies, especially the platen roller. Using 91%isopropyl alcohol with a lint free cloth/cleaning swabs are the only recommended materials to beused for optimum printer cleaning. In the event a label has become stuck in the printer, pleaseconsult the appropriate service documentation for component removal if necessary for thoroughcleaning and operation. Avoid using any sharp or hard objects to dislodge the label from theprinter. In the event excessive debris has become solidified and you are experiencing faded print,streaking or a failed print element void that cannot be corrected by the cleaning methoddescribed above, the use of the Printhead Cleaning Sheet (Lexmark p/n 56P4439) should beused. If this does not rectify the printing issue, remove the printhead from the assembly and lookfor signs of wear in the area producing the void and if necessary, replace the printhead.

ADJUSTING THE PRINT QUALITYThe Lexmark D500 printer is equipped with two different methods of adjusting the quality of theprint—print darkness and print speed.

When adjusting the printer for optimum print quality, a barcode verifier system is highlyrecommended for evaluating the printouts. The human eye is a poor judge of the relative widthsof the bars in a symbol, a characteristic that is extremely important for good bar code quality.

Print Darkness

This adjustment allows the user to control (within a specified range) the amount of power that isused to activate the print head heating elements. It is important to find a proper print darknesslevel based on your particular label. The printed images should not be too light nor should theedges of text or graphics be smudged. Instead, the edges of each image should be crisp and welldefined.

Once the range has been selected, the PRINT Potentiometer (VR1) on the front panel can beused to make finer adjustments. It provides a continuous range of adjustment, allowing you tomake precise changes. Use a small cross-point screwdriver, turning clockwise for darker printand counterclockwise for lighter print. See page 5-4 for instructions on performing potentiometeradjustments

Note: The PRINT potentiometer adjustment will affect the darkness levels controlled using the PCLcommand @PJL SET SPEED, i.e., if the PRINT potentiometer is adjusted for lighter print, thedarkness will be lighter in all speed ranges selected by the @PJL SET SPEED command.

Print Speed

The other method of controlling print quality is by controlling the speed at which the label isprinted. It is especially critical when printing “ladder” bar codes (bar codes printed with the barsparallel to the print line). When printing a “ladder” bar code, it is important to allow the head tocool sufficiently before stepping to the next position. If it does not have sufficient time to cool, thebar will be “smeared” on the trailing edge.

This adjustment is made only on an individual label basis using the @PJL SET SPEED= [2 - 4]command. For more details on this command, see the Programming Reference.

Cleaning the Print Head

1 Before starting, obtain 91% isopropyl alcohol and a lintfree cotton swab. Make sure the printer is OFF, andremove the power cable.

2 Lift up the Top Cover and locate the Print HeadAssembly which is mounted under the cover.

3 Apply the alcohol to a cotton swab.

4 The Print Head faces downward along the front edgeof the assembly. Pass the end of the dampened swabalong the entire width of the Print Head.

5 Check for any black coloring or adhesive on the swab after cleaning.

6 Repeat if necessary until the swab is clean after it is passed over the head.

7 The head should be cleaned at least every time the label roll is changed, and more often in harsh environments.

Clearing Stubborn Debris on the Print Head

1 If certain stains on the print head cannot be removedeasily with cotton swabs dabbed in cleaning solution,obtain cleaning sheets designed for cleaning printheads (Lexmark part number 56P4439.)

2 Load the cleaning sheet with the rough side facing theprint head.

3 With the printer turned OFF, and the Top Coverclosed, slowly pull the cleaning sheet outwards.Repeat the process until the print head is clean.

Cleaning the Platen and Paper Roller

1 Before starting, obtain 91% isopropyl alcohol and alint free cotton swab or lint free cloth. Make sure theprinter is OFF, and remove the power cable.

2 Lift up the Top Cover.

3 The platen roller is the black rubber roller near thefront panel. The print rollers are located at the printhead assembly, near the fanfold-label loading window.

4 Wet the cotton swab or lint-free cloth with the alcohol.While rotating the platen roller with your fingers, cleanthe entire length of the roller using one or more cotton swabs or lint free cloth. The roller should be cleaned of any label or adhesive residue.

5 Repeat the whole cleaning process if necessary. Theplaten and rollers should be cleaned whenever foreignmatter such as dust or adhesive is present.

RELEASING/REPLACING THE PRINT HEAD

The print head on the printer is a replaceable item. If itbecomes damaged for any reason, it can be easily removedand replaced.

1 Make sure the printer is OFF, and remove the powercable.

2 Lift up the Top Cover.

3 Locate the small center tab above the print head. Pressand hold down this tab. At the same time, pull the wholeprint head below it, downwards. If necessary, use the twohooks at the sides of the print head for leverage.

4 After pulling the print head downwards, press its bottomportion so that it tilts inwards on the two aluminum pivotsat the sides of the assembly.

5 Now lift the print head upwards and outwards, so that it isno longer restrained by the metal pivots. The cableconnector at the rear of the print head is now exposed.

6 Disconnect the connecting cable from the print headconnectors and set the print head aside.

7 Carefully attach a replacement print head to the cableconnector. The connectors are keyed so that they canonly be inserted in the correct orientation. Note: While handling the print head, be careful not to scratchthe printing surface of the print head. Scratching thesurface will cause permanent and irreparable damagethat is not covered by the warranty!

8 Reinsert the print head into the printer, making sure thatthe metal slots at the sides of the print head fit back overthe aluminum pivots on the printer.

9 Press and hold down the center tab which was previouslyused to release the print head. Push the print headupwards so that it snaps into place.

10 Release the center tab and close the Top Cover. Proceedto perform a test print to ensure that the print head isconnected properly.

CLEANING THE LABEL SENSORThe label sensor is used to control the positioning of the label.

So when dust, dirt or other foreign matter interferes with the light path of the sensor, erratic labelpositioning occurs. The sensor should thus be cleaned regularly, after every two rolls of labels.

1Turn the printer OFF and remove the power cable.

2Open the Top Cover.

3 Locate the sensor located next to the yellowscrewdriver, near the left-hand side label guide.Apply 91% isopropyl alcohol to a cotton swab.

4 Use the cotton swab to clean any foreign matter fromthe exposed surface of the sensor by inserting thecotton tip in the paper slot and briskly cleaning it witha back and forth motion.

PCL EMULATIONThe D500 printer supports the Hewlett-Packard Company’s LaserJet Printer Command Language. This chapter discusses PCL emulation commands, along with resident PCL emulation font and symbol set support.

SELECTING PCL EMULATION

USING YOUR SOFTWARE PROGRAMThe D500 requires a PJL prologue, or series of commands, at the start of each print job, including the Printer Job Language (PJL) Enter Language Command. FONT AND SYMBOL SET SUPPORT

Your printer has 10 resident scalable PCL fonts.

Several parameters are used to select a font from the data stream. These include symbol set, spacing, point, or pitch, style, weight, and typeface number. For scalable fonts, you can vary the size of a font by specifying pitch or point size (point size for proportional fonts, pitch for fixed space fonts.

A symbol set defines which characters are available for a font and the code point for each of these characters. Your printer supports 16 resident symbol sets. The table beginning on page 9-5 shows the symbol sets available for each font in PCL emulation. Not all fonts support all symbol sets.

COMMAND STRUCTURE

This section introduces the different types of PCL emulation commands and their structure, or syntax. It also demonstrates how you can link commands to abbreviate them.

CONTROL CODESControl Codes are single-character instructions.

COMMANDSPCL commands are multibyte strings (also known as “escape sequences”) that begin with the Escape control code (ESC, ←, decimal 27, or hexadecimal 1B). The ESC control code notifies the printer that the characters that follow are to be interpreted as part of a command and are not control codes or data to be printed.

COMMAND STRUCTURE

Most PCL emulation commands have the following structure:

ESC & a # C

Spaces have been added to this example for readability. The command parameter variables are indicated by a number sign (#).

COMMAND PARAMETERSA command parameter sets the value for a command. This value stays constant until either a different value resets the command or a command resets the printer to the default values. For example, after the printer receives a command that selects a right margin beginning at column 63, the right margin of each printed page begins at column 63. That margin stays constant until a right margin command with a different value resets it or until the printer is reset.

Parameters for each command are listed in the command tables beginning on page 9. Use the Symbol Set Tables to determine the decimal or hexadecimal value for each parameter. To determine a decimal or hex value, first locate the value of the parameter you require in the Symbol Set Table. The decimal value is the value shown in the bottom of the cell or box with that parameter. To find a hex value, go straight up the grid from the desired parameter and read the value in the top heading. This is the first character of the hex value. Next, go straight across the grid to the left of the parameter and read the value in the left column heading. This is the second character of the hex value. For example, ESC (←) is coded 1B in Hex and 27 in decimal. (Any one of the three values ←, 1B, or 27 might be used in your application. Read your documentation to determine which to use.) The example sets the pitch of the primary font to16.66 characters per inch.

LINKING COMMANDSYou can combine PCL emulation commands by linking them if the first 3 bytes of the commands are identical. The combined, short form sends the first 3 bytes only once in the string. To combine commands:

• Use the first 3 bytes (characters) of the command only once at the start of the command string.

• Make the last letter of each command in the string lowercase.

• Capitalize the last letter of the string.

For example, notice that the first 3 bytes of these two commands are the same:

RASTER IMAGE GRAPHICS

These commands utilize the raster area. Before sending data, set the presentation mode, the resolution, the compression mode, the raster height and width, and start raster graphics. These parameters are in effect until you overwrite them with a different command or there is a printer reset. To ensure that the printed image appears in the expected area, set width and height parameters.

RASTER COMPRESSION MODEThe Raster Compression Mode command determines how raster data is coded. It affects the amount of code required to create an image, and the efficiency of image printing.

DELTA ROWDelta Row is a compression mode that identifies and transmits only those bytes different from the ones in a preceding row. The control byte consists of two parts:

ZLIBZlib is a generic compression method. It refers to a standard for compression as well as the library that implements the standard.

The zlib compression method uses the deflate algorithm. This same algorithm is used by more widely known compression utilities such as PKZIP and GZIP.

Compressed data is a series of variably-sized blocks. An encoder determines how to break the data into blocks and finds the best compression method to use for each block.

An encoder works based on the following principles. The encoder creates a dictionary containing different characters in a set of data. Short strings of bits represent more commonly occurring characters, and long strings of bits represent less frequently used characters. A probability tree determines which characters are frequently used. Repeated patterns in a string of characters are identified and stored, so the string doesn’t have to be stored multiple times.

A three-bit zlib header is added to the beginning of a block to describe the type of compression used and indicates whether the block is a final block. Other information in the header includes checksums, compression algorithm used, and the level of compression. In compression all checksums are set to zero and in decompression the checksums are ignored.

The memory required for zlib compression and decompression is independent of the size of the data to be compressed or decompressed.

The number 999 does not conflict with other compression types, so it is used to represent zlib compression. See “Raster Compression Mode” on page 9-30 for more information.

GROUP 3 AND GROUP 4 RASTER COMPRESSIONSince Group 4 images do not use line endings, the width of the image must be specified using the Raster Width command (ESC*r#S).

The compressed image data is sent to the printer using the Transfer Raster Data command (ESC*b#W). The maximum number of bytes that can be sent using the Transfer Raster Data command is 32K bytes. Images larger than 32K bytes must be broken up and sent using multiple commands. It does not matter where the image is broken, or how many Transfer Raster Data commands are used. Once the image is started (with a Transfer Raster Data command), no other commands are allowed until the entire image has been sent.

The following example prints a Group 4 image file that is 256 bits wide and 9,645 bytes long:

When creating a macro, first assign it an ID number. If this number is identical to an existing macro ID in RAM, the old macro is deleted when you specify the Macro Control Start Definition. Next, start the macro definition, send the contents of the macro, and stop the macro definition.

Note: Although a macro may be called or executed from within another macro (nesting), a macro cannot be defined within another macro definition. Each macro must be defined separately.

PRINTER JOB LANGUAGEYour printer supports complete Printer Job Language (PJL) commands, including certain commands that cause the printer to enter PCL emulation.

To determine which commands your printer supports, see Appendix A: “PCL Support” on page A-2.

PJL COMMAND NOTATION

The syntax for each supported PJL command is listed in this chapter. The following character codes are used throughout the chapter to illustrate the syntax of each PJL command.

Note:

• Parameters enclosed in square brackets ([ ]) are optional and not required for command execution.

• The PJL interpreter requires uppercase for the @PJL prefix for all PJL commands except the Universal Exit Language (UEL) command. The rest of the PJL command is not case sensitive. The UEL command is case sensitive.

• All PJL commands except UEL must be terminated with a line feed character (<LF>).

KERNEL COMMANDS

UNIVERSAL EXIT LANGUAGE CommandThe Universal Exit Language (UEL) command terminates the current printer language and allows dynamic switching into PJL.

Syntax:

Notes:

The PJL commands must immediately follow the UEL command (that is, the X in the UEL syntax must be immediately followed by the @PJL of the next PJL command).

ENTER LANGUAGE CommandThis command causes the printer to enter PCL emulation.

Syntax:

@PJL ENTER LANGUAGE = pcl[<CR>]<LF>

Note: You can use uppercase, lowercase, or mixed case. (@PJL must be uppercase; all others can be mixed or lowercase.)

COMMENT CommandThis command lets you add descriptive comments to your PJL job.

Syntax:

@PJL COMMENT words[<CR>]<LF>

Notes:

• When the printer receives this command, it is ignored.

• The words parameter can be any combination of printable characters, spaces, and horizontal tabs.

• The COMMENT command is terminated by the line feed character (<LF>).

JOB SEPARATION COMMANDS

You printer supports the PJL JOB and EOJ commands.

JOB CommandThe host computer can use the JOB command to separate print data into various parts or jobs. Specifically, the JOB command signifies to the printer the start of a print job. Use the EOJ command to signify the end of a job. In addition, use the JOB/EOJ pair to accomplish the following:

• Provide a job name.

• Indicate which pages of the job should be printed.

• Monitor the job status as it prints.

Syntax:

@PJL JOB [NAME = "job name"] [START = first page][END = last page] [PASSWORD = number][<CR>]<LF>

Notes:

• The JOB command should only be used in conjunction with the EOJ command.

• After receiving a JOB command, the printer does not process a UEL command as a PJL job boundary until it receives the corresponding EOJ. Instead, UELs occurring within a JOB/EOJ pair are processed as printer language resets (for example, PCL ESCE).

Parameters:

NAME = "job name"

Use the NAME parameter to assign a character string name to a particular job. The name may be any combination of printable characters, spaces or horizontal tabs up to a maximum of 80 characters, spaces, or tabs. The job name must be enclosed in double quotes, as indicated by the command syntax.

START = first page

Use the START parameter in conjunction with the END parameter to skip the printing of a particular portion of the job. The emulator discards pages of a job until the page specified by this parameter is reached. The first page range is from 1 to 2,147,483,647. Omission of the START parameter causes the printer to start printing with page 1 of the job.

END = last page

Use the END parameter in conjunction with the START parameter to skip the printing of a particular portion of the job. The emulator discards all pages of a job after the last page has been printed. The specification of last page is relative to page 1 of the print job and its range is from 1 to 2,147,483,647. Omission of the END parameter causes the printer to print all pages to the end of the job.

EOJ CommandThe EOJ command signifies the end of a print job.

Syntax:

@PJL EOJ [NAME = "job name"][<CR>]<LF>

Note:

Only use the EOJ command in conjunction with the JOB command.

Parameter:

NAME = "job name"

Use the NAME parameter to assign a character string name to a particular job. The name may be any combination of printable characters, spaces, or horizontal tabs up to a maximum of 80 characters, spaces, or tabs. The NAME string may be different from the NAME string specified in the JOB command. The job name must be enclosed in double quotes.

DEFAULT CommandThis command modifies the default setting for the specified environment variable and stores the setting in the printer NVRAM. The new setting is activated with the occurrence of the next PJL reset condition.

Syntax:

@PJL DEFAULT [command modifier:value] variable=value[<CR>]<LF>

The [command modifier:value] parameter specifies the type of PJL variables to be modified. The variables supported are listed in “Table 10-2: PJL Variables” on page 10-10.

SET CommandThis command modifies the current setting for the specified environment variable. The new setting is active immediately, and remains active until the next occurrence of a PJL reset condition.

Use the SET command to modify any currently defined environment variable that cannot be set using the desired printer language. For example, use the PJL SET command to set Page Protect, which cannot be set within a printer language such as PCL emulation.

Syntax:

@PJL SET [command modifier:value] variable=value[<CR>]<LF>

[command modifier:value]

The [command modifier:value] parameter specifies the type of PJL variables to be modified. The variables supported are listed in “Table 10-2: PJL Variables” on page 10-10.

Note: Variables may be modified by the DEFAULT command, except those marked Read Only. Some variables may only be modified using the PJL SET command. These variables cannot be modified using the DEFAULT command. They are marked Set Only.

INITIALIZE CommandThis command restores both the current and default environment variables to their factory default values and updates the printer NVRAM. This command affects all of the variables listed in “Table 10-2: PJL Variables” on page 10-10, except all read-only variables.

RESET CommandThis command resets the current environment variables to the settings stored in the printer NVRAM. Therefore, any variables modified by the PJL SET command are returned to their default value after execution of the PJL RESET command.

STATUS READBACK COMMANDS

Applications can request configuration and status information from the printer using the Status Readback commands. In addition, the printer can also be instructed to send unsolicited status information back to the host computer when asynchronous events occur, such as a memory error or a paper jam.

DINQUIRE CommandThis command is used to query the default setting (NVRAM) of the specified environment variable.

ECHO CommandThe ECHO command instructs the printer to return the specified words after the command is parsed. This command provides a method of capturing the status information returned by a specific print job.

TWO-DIMENSIONAL BAR CODES

MAXICODE PCL 5 COMMANDS TO SUPPORT MAXICODE BAR CODESLexmark provides two methods to print MaxiCode bar codes. The final method uses two Lexmark unique commands ESC&x#W and ESC&y#W.

BAR CODE DESCRIPTOR ESC&X#W[DESCRIPTOR DATA]This escape sequence is used to describe not only what bar code to print, but also all of the parameter settings required to build the bar code. The first two bytes of this command always designate the symbology. The remaining byte is then interpreted to specify the mode. # is the number of bytes of descriptor data. The descriptor data for MaxiCode would be the binary string 00 02 01 (for mode 1), 00 02 02 (for mode 2), and so on.

TRANSFER BAR CODE DATA ESC&Y#W[BAR CODE DATA]This new PCL 5 command is used to transfer a raw block of bar code data to be encoded. The bar code data is encoded according to what was specified in the last valid Bar Code Descriptor command received. If no valid Descriptor is sent, then this command is ignored and the data is flushed. # is the number of bytes of bar code data.

BAR CODE DESCRIPTOR FOR MAXICODEBelow is the header definition of the bar code descriptor for MaxiCode:

Symbology ID bytes 0 and 1: (Required = 00 02x)These two bytes signify the symbology. For MaxiCode, these two bytes must be 00x and 02x.

Mode: (Default = 02x)This field designates what mode to use when interpreting the input data. Valid modes are (in hex).

MaxiCode NotesDepending on the mode, the input data sent with the Transfer Bar Code Data command must follow the following rules:

Rule 1: For all modes the input data must start with a label-number field andnumber-of-labels field. Both fields are one digit in length and areterminated with either a comma or Group Separator (GS, ASCII 29,hexadecimal 1D).

Rule 2: For modes 2 and 3 there are 3 extra fields that must follow the labelfields. These include the postal code, country code, and class ofservice. Each field must be terminated with either a comma or GS.

Rule 3: A mode 2 postal code can be 0 to 9 digits.

Rule 4: A mode 3 postal code can be 0 to 6 alphanumeric characters (anyprintable character in code set A as defined in AIM spec).

Rule 5: The country code must be 3 digits in length and thus padded withleading zeros if necessary.

Rule 6: The class of service must be 3 digits in length and thus padded withleading in zeros if necessary.

Rule 7: For modes 2 and 3 an optional ANSI Message Header (for example[)>RS01GSyy) can be inserted prior to the postal code. (RS = recordseparator, ASCII 30, hexadecimal 1D;yy is a two digit year). Thismessage is automatically moved to the secondary message. Neithera group separator nor a comma should terminate this message.

An optional secondary message follow the class of service for modes 2 and 3. For modes 4, 5, and 6 the message follows the number-of-labels field.

HUMAN-READABLE TEXTBecause two-dimensional bar codes are capable of encoding thousands of characters, human-readable interpretation of the data may not be practical. Alternatively, descriptive text rather than literal text may be printed with the symbol. If printed, any character size and font available may be selected, and the text may be printed anywhere desired near the symbol. The text must not interfere with the bar code symbol or the quiet zones.

FUNCTIONAL PARAMETERS FOR MAXICODE (TYPEFACE SELECTION METHOD)The data sent when using this second technique of printing MaxiCode symbols will follow the same rules that exist for data sent using the Transfer Bar Code Data Command to print MaxiCode symbols, with the following change to rule 1. (See “Rule 1” on page 10-6.) The input data must start with a label-number field, a number-of-labels field, and a mode field. All three of these fields are one digit in length and are terminated with either a comma or Group Separator (GS, ASCII 29).
