Why 250 for YOUth ?

A presentation by the Bhutan Youth Development Fund,

2011

Page 2: 250 for YOUth

How many of us have really sat back and thought about people who are

less fortunate than us?

Let us look at the facts and realize how many people in this world, in our own country, are less fortunate than us?

Page 3: 250 for YOUth

• One-fourth of the world's 550 million working poor are young

• some 130 million young people are not able to lift themselves and

their families above the US$1 a day poverty line.

• Some 88 million young people, aged 15 to 24, are out of work.

Did you know that in the world. . .

Page 4: 250 for YOUth

Did you know that here in Bhutan . . .

•23.3% of the population barely earn Nu.1100 per month - which means one in every four people live under the

national poverty line.

•Nearly half of our children are undernourished.

• Nearly 3.96% of the total country’s population are disabled.

Page 5: 250 for YOUth

They deserve our attention

and together

we can change their lives . . .

YDF was established in 1999, by the Royal command of His Majesty the 4th, King Jigme

Singye Wangchuck, to meet the needs of young people.

Since then, under the leadership of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Tshering Pem

Wangchuck, we have been able to touch the lives of many young people in Bhutan.

Imagine being born in the remote corners of the country to an economically disadvantaged family…

Many would not even think of studying abroad.

Sangay Tempa from Pemagatshel dared to dream.

In 2010, Sangay attended the Golden Youth Camp and received the title ‘Golden Youth’ of the

year.He will soon leave for the

Netherlands to study in one of the best schools

in the world and is excited and happy.

“My life has been transformed.”

Slide three: Did you know that in our country? • Almost quarter of the entire population in Bhutan live under the national

poverty line with barely Nu.1100/- a month. Which means one in every four people in our country live under the national poverty line

• Nearly half of our children do not enough to eat in the country… • An overwhelming 37% of our children are stunting (stunting is caused by

nutritional deficiencies over a long period of time), 4.6% of them are wasting a condition of acute malnutrition, causes body fat and tissue to “waste” away, or to degenerate.

• Over all only half of the total population is literate in our country… • In 2010 the total numbers of youth who are unemployed were… out of

this… • They deserve our attention.. Otherwise how else are we going to achieve

Gross national happiness, the vision of your dear monarchs….

YOUth like to be nurtured. They like responsibilities and they enjoy being

together.Young Volunteers in Action (Y-VIA) brings together over 750 youth from all over the

country whoshare a common dream of making the nation

proud. They are productive and make significant differences in their community.

They are the future and they are learning by doing…

Imagine a little boy of seven begging on the streets of

Thimphu?

Many of us think such adversaries don’t exist.

Tandin was spotted begging on the street a few months

ago . . .

Can we see the talents of people with disabilities? What comes to most of our minds when we see someone who cannot walk or talk on their

own?

Page 13: 250 for YOUth

tour of Eastern Bhutan of 2003Pema waited in the sun all day to offer Her Majesty a

present. He makes the most beautiful carvings - and he does it

with his toes. Today, after attending the training at the Zorig Chusum,

How many of us spend money everyday on things that we don’t necessarily need?

How many of us think that the same amount we spend on these things could change someone’s life?

YOU can educate or help a child with a disability to feel a part of society with the same amount of money that you

regularly spend when taking your kids out to a restaurant.

Help addicts overcome their disease and become productive citizens with less than the amount you would typically

spend going out.

Just think of the differences you can

make!

We can make a difference . . .
