SCALE COMPARISON SERIES[COVER]
Ken Sperling is an information designer as well as a designer of spatial experiences. His work seeks to convey complex information in ways that are simple to understand, precise, and visually appealing. He has had the pleasure of working in collaboration with a variety of design and art disciplines that have helped to shape his holistic design perspectives. His hope is that his work makes complicated ideas accessible to a wide variety of people and that those ideas inspire imagination, innovation, and reveal new possibilities.

establishing a division between the structural and habitat components permitted an organization where rotations of the units would allow the frontal surface to become visible or recede into the built environment
planter beds within an urban setting, whether directly on the ground or raised, could be connected to the habitat infrastructure; allowing vegetation to grow within the context of the greater system
while maintaining subsurface and systematic connectivity, the module may also be inplemented on vertical surfaces to either improve the visual appearance of on otherwise typical wall or to showcase the connectivity the site is providing

PHENOLOGY, LIFE-CYCLE, AND STRUCTURAL HABITAT
+ fungi, ascomycota, pezizomycetes, pezizales, helvellaceae, helvella, lacunosa+ black elfin saddle+ hyphae: branching filaments one cell thick constitute the primary vegetative state of the fungus.+ mycelium: a mass of hyphae visible to the naked eye as thin white strands—
the extents of a single haploid organism.+ dikaryotic mycelium: two haploid mycelia of opposite mating type undergo plasmogamy and grow faster
than parent mycelia.+ mushrooms: fruiting bodies resulting from environmental cues such as rain, temperature fluctuations,
or changes in a symbiont plant.+ spores: released from the mushroom’s inner surfaces and carried by the wind to propogate new
organisms.+ mycelium infuses all landscapes. a single cubic inch of soil can contain 8 miles of mycelia cells.
they holds soils together and are extremely tenacious. they’re the grand molecular disassemblers of nature and generate the humus soils across the land masses of earth. there also exists a multi-directional transfer of nutrients between plants, mitigated by the mycelium in the form of mycorrhizae. humans are more closely related to fungi than to any other kingdom. mycelium inhales oxygen and exhales carbon dioxide just as we do. we also share in common the same pathogens. it has even been hypothesized that the structure of mycelium essentially represents extended neurological networks. both their structure and their function of transporting and distributing nutrients communicates the idea that mycelium is in fact the earth’s biological internet.
+ mycorrhizal function: for 95% of plant species, fungal mycelium also occupies the rhizoshere and engages in a sybiotic relationship with the host plant. the mycelium, being much smaller than plant roots and composed of a different cell membrane (chitin rather than cellulose), has both high water absorption and the ability to uptake various micronutrients. in exchange, the plant distributes glucose and photosynthetic products.

ACCESSIBILITY AND POTENTIAL ACQUISITIONS
An imposed system to improve the existing site would likely include elements where individuals are travelling by foot. This mapping highlights roadways which are directly related to travel between Union Station, the Chinatown Gold Line station, and Dodger Stadium. The sidewalks adjacent to these roads are currently the only way of accessing the stadium by foot (should one choose to do so.) Also mapped, are open regions currently void of existing structures which may provide opportunities for new developments and thereby possibly new walkable regions. Additionally, the major topographical and structural hindrances are shown as these systems may need to be bridged for any proposal to link the surroundings to the stadium site. EPISTEPHRENIA THEMES
[01] SYNTHESIZING PERSPECTIVES Individuals have unique perspectives based on their expertise and background. More accurate truths can be developed when numerous individuals are able to contribute.
[02] EXPLORATION + DISCOVERY Developing new knowledge is not a direct process. Discovery evolves from situations where the unknown is persistently confronted around every corner.
[03] ACTIVE INTERACTION The human subconscious is constantly searching for environmental optimization. Cognitive processes are enhanced when the individual is given active situational control.
[04] PERSONAL AWARENESS When an individual is consciously aware of their own existence, they are in a heightened state of receptiveness to new experience and more apt to question and engage.
[05] SHARING INFORMATION When information is shared in a spirit of open collaboration, emphasis is placed on the broadening of collective knowledge versus personal gain.
[06] HYBRID HUMANITY Humans no longer think in a purely biological manner. As technology advances mental states will gradually transcend traditional senses of self.
[07] LEFT + RIGHT BRAIN Strict systematic scientific investigation and ambiguous expressive creativity are equally valid and necessary means of developing knowledge.
[08] INTERCONNECTIVITY All things are ultimately related to and dependant upon one another. Advancements in any particular realm often have significant impacts in seemingly unrelated fields.
[09] FRACTAL NATURE Knowledge networks across all scales of reality, from the human brain to the internet, share the same filamentary intertwingled structure and function in the same manner.
[10] CHOICE In every moment of existence innumerable choices are made. The great majority of decisions are made subconsciously and are derived from a lifetime of past experiences.
[11] THE ADJACENT POSSIBLE At any given time there are only certain next steps which one can learn. The amount of new knowledge possible is dependant upon the breadth of prior understandings.
[12] THE ENDLESS PROCESS Pursuits of knowledge never have definitive ends. The deeper one delves into any subject the more that knowledge brings about questions from related topics.

INTERACTIVE KNOWLEDGE-SHARING ENVIRONMENT
+ Public access to the site is limited to individuals who opt-in to the social knowledge perspective system and who have a GPS enabled mobile device.
+ At the entrance gates, visitors would be presented with a monitor asking them: “What do you know?” “What can you share?”
+ The visitors then select up to three subject areas within which they are knowledgeable or perspectives from which they view reality.
+ Different sets of knowledge or types of thinking are color coded and are assigned to the individual. Within each branch of knowledge there are subcategories which are designated by various icons.
+ Finally, the visitors’ mobile devices are scanned in order to track their movements within the site.
+ Upon entering the site, visitors discover that the surface on which they walk is a digital interface which projects a series of rings which designate the knowledge and perspectives they embody and specified at the entrance.
+ The rings completely encircle each individual and track their movements. By identifying individual internal aspects in a public setting a self-awareness results. The system encourages social interactions by not only revealing aspects of the individual but by directing the individual to other individuals on site which share related knowledge backgrounds.
[1] ring colors designate basic categories[2] each ring corresponds to a specified subcategory[3] icons shown on the rings along with the related vectors direct toward other site users who
have identified as knowledgeable within the same subcategory[4] colored points on the rings indicate other site users knowledgeable in the same general
category[5] vectors change in width and intensity to show proximal distance to other users[6] the icons, points, and vectors dynamically update throughout the site to continuously direct
the individual to others with similar knowledge sets

MAT URBANISM
[01] AMORPHOUS - highly suggestive ambiguous borders without hierarchy, centrality, axiality, or symmetry
[02] HORIZONTAL - minimal sectional variation[03] MERGED - layering new uses above and below old uses[04] RELATIONAL - rather than appearance, diagrammatic and organizational
structure[05] TRANSITIONAL - spaces for movement merge with spaces of assembly,
the connective spaces being as important as the nodes they connect
[06] RESPONSIVE - makes room for the unpredictable within a sense of form and order
[07] FRACTAL - the understanding comes from the parts as the whole can never be seen entirely
[08] ADAPTABLE - anticipates change over time and can offer user-defined changes
[09] CONDUCTIVE - acts as a conduit through which the city flows rather than a walled and defensible interior
[10] CONJUGATIVE - the connective tissue between existing sites[11] RHYTHMIC - is concerned with the interval

ENERGY EXPENDITURE SHIPPING CROSS-COUNTRY
+ new york+ chicago+ houston+ philadelphia+ san antonio+ dallas+ jacksonville+ indianapolis+ charlotte+ detroit+ baltimore+ boston+ dc+ atlanta+ miami+ columbus
Los Angeles is the primary US port for trade with Asia. Since this point of entry is in many cases a great distance from the end shipping location, additional energy must be expended in order for those goods to reach their final destination. The three primary transportation methods for shipping over the continent are rail, truck, and air. The information below represents the relative carbon footprint for these modes of travel as measured from Los Angeles to a variety of other major US cities.

FLOW SYSTEMS
In addition to their proximity, there is a visual quality to the freeways and railways which tie them to the LA river. Their shared linear, yet meandering nature implies that these various flows are intrinsically linked and should be considered as part of a unified system, If infrastructure is the defining characteristic of Los Angeles, these systems should be embraced, built upon, and accepted as spatially dominant features they are.[1] freeways and connectors[2] railways[3] la river and arroyo seco[4] riparian vegetation

PHYSICAL BARRIERS TO DEVELOPMENT
A proposal to rectify this marooned nature of Dodger Stadium may propose a direct linkage; an immediate connection to the city grid at-large. If such a promenade, boulevard, or similar linear system were to be proposed, what would be the significant blockages preventing such an intervention? This mapping looks at existing landforms and built structures which would pose obstacles to a radial path both to and from the stadium.
Limits to direct radial intervention: [1] egress - topographic [2] egress - built structure [3] ingress - topographic [4] ingress - built structure
Merged obverse ingress-egress: [5] topographic [6] built structure
