The Dun Mountain Track is now closed during week days and won’t fully reopen until mid-March, while construction of the Brook Waimararma Sanctuary fence takes place.Sanctuary general manager, Hudson Dodd, says they’ve worked with Nelson City Council to keep the closure to a minimum.“The track will be open from 5pm in the evenings, all weekend and for three weeks over the Christmas holiday, which leaves cyclists and walkers with some good options over the summer to

enjoy the historic track,” he says. “We’ve worked closely with the mountain bike fraternity and we’re really pleased at the way they’re on board with our project and the need for temporary track closures over the coming months.”The track will be temporarily closed from Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm until mid-March 2015, with the exception of the Christmas break, which is from December 20 to January 11.Work on the fence started in September and the first posts will be in before Christmas.

Another one of the ladies who helped perform CPR told Anita that she had just finished a first aid course last week.Police attended the scene and spokesperson Barbara Dunn says the boy was found face-down in the pool by a family member. Nelson City Council says a recent audit of the property’s swimming pool found several items that need-ed addressing. “The owner was made aware of

what was needed and corresponded promptly with both the council and his property manager to have the items addressed,” says the coun-cil’s communications manager Paul Shattock. He says the incident brings home the importance of having swim-ming pools fenced properly. “Even where barriers are provided, they must remain and continue to be fully compliant to ensure safety of occupants, future occupants and visitors to houses with pools,” he says.

Nelson City Council is inves-tigating a petition by Monaco residents to allow dogs on its reserve, after two residents were fined for having their dogs there off a leash.Monaco resident Betty Wat-kins was at the reserve several months ago, exercising her neighbour’s dog, when control officers turned up and warned Betty for having a dog off a lead. The officer also issued a $150 fine to two other residents for the same infringement. The complaint was made by a visiting mother, who was with her two children. But Betty was furious and started a petition to allow dogs on the reserve and off the lead. She collected four pages of signatures and last month two other residents, Chris Keay and Lois Morgan presented the petition to the council.Chris says the dogs are all well behaved and she was shocked that residents would be fined for having dogs on the reserve. “We as dog owners down here are very responsible and we al-ways have our dogs on leashes

when we go around the pen-insula but when we get to the park we let the dogs off. There’s about half a dozen, they all get on well and it’s fine.“We are very conscious about what’s going on. Not one of us would think about taking our dogs on the reserve if it was be-ing used for a picnic or some-thing like that. We are very responsible people here and we’re dog lovers.”She says the complaint was “stupid”. “It’s all happened because this one woman, who doesn’t live in Monaco, decided to have a whinge.”Councillor Brian McGurk says a report on the reserve is due

back in the next few months.“We asked for a report from staff on our options. Until then I won’t comment too much, but there are a number of compet-ing activities down there and I have a pretty open mind about the options.”Chris says if the rule doesn’t change it will mean people like Betty won’t be able to take her neighbour’s dog for a walk. “Betty can’t take the dog for a walk on the lead because she has a zimmer frame. The coun-cil could quite easily fence off the playground, which isn’t a big area, or just make the whole area one of the parks in Nelson where dogs can be off the lead.”

Chefs are known for being ultra com-petitive, and for having a wicked tem-per, but two of Nelson’s top cooks reckon smacking each other in the face won’t be that easy.“We get on really well,” says Garry Ford. “But I’m sure that as soon as he whacks me I’ll get angry.”Garry, the owner of restaurants Ford’s and Panama, will face Hopgood’s owner Kevin Hopgood at the Fight 4 Victory charity boxing event next April. The pair are the latest confirmed fight-ers for the event that raises money for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust, along with Nelson councillor Tim Skin-ner, who will line up against Wakefield’s Richard Martin. Both chefs will be in their 50s by the time the fight comes around and Kevin joked that it should be dubbed the Grey Power fight. “I hope we get a Grey Pow-er discount on the corporate tables.”Programme director of Victory Box-ing, Paul Hampton, says it’s fantastic to have the pair line up for the cause. “We’re really excited about having them on the fight card. They’re at the top of their field and really successful men, so for them to get behind Victory Boxing is great for us.”Already, 35 of the 50 corporate tables

have been sold and Paul says there’s strong demand for the general admis-sion tickets. Garry says he was approached to take part by Victory Boxing trustee, Barry Galbraith, and was immediately keen.“I’m looking forward to getting really fit. That’s the part that interests me,” he says. “But stopping drinking will be hard,” he joked.Neither men has any history as boxers but both were excited about taking their rivalry in Nelson’s restaurant scene into the ring. “We’ll make sure the knives

are put away and it’s just boxing,” says Garry. Both said that helping raise money for the trust was also a major motivator. “Barry and Paul do such great work, I’m really keen to support that,” says Kevin. The other fighters confirmed are ser-geants Justin Carter from the army and Stefan James from the police; hair-dressers Hazel Trethowen and Libby Brumwell; lawyers Emma Riddell and Michelle Byczkow; Pomeroys general manager Hayden Thompson and Nel-son Weekly editor Andrew Board.

Page 16-17Teens work for smokes

The rising cost of cigarettes won’t deter a group of Nelson students despite many of them working part time jobs to pay for their habit.Nelson Weekly spoke with a

group of teenage smokers who are either at high school or re-cently finished. All were girls and all started when they were still too young to buy tobacco. Most still are too young. They say they “don’t know”

why they smoke but buy their tobacco at Nelson retailers who notoriously don’t ask for ID and if they don’t have enough money to buy a whole pack-et, will go halves with their friends, because they simply can’t go without their daily in-take of nicotine. Some even go to the effort of brushing their teeth to cover any lingering smell on their breath before visiting boyfriends who don’t know about their habit.

One Nelson College for Girls student tampered with her ID to make her age appear over 18 and others get parents, friends or older siblings to buy it or simply visit shops that don’t ask for ID.An announcement by the gov-ernment in last week’s budget that the price of cigarettes is set to rise by ten per cent every year for the next four didn’t even deter them. “I’ll keep smoking, I can’t stop,” says high school student Hannah Flem-ming, 17. The girls paid for their tobacco

by working part time jobs out-side of school time with a cou-ple working full time. Most said their parents were

against their smoking “but couldn’t do anything”. Others admitted smoking at interval and lunchtime while at school and even smoking in their car so they wouldn’t get caught by

Sirens try to smash derby foesThere were thrills and spills as some of the South Island’s feistiest women took to the track in front of a full house for the first ever tri-ple header hosted in Nelson. Though the Sirens fought a good

battle, it was the Dunedin Derby Gallow Lasses that took out the trophy in frong of 2000 people. “It was a little bit disappointing that we didn’t win for our home crowd, but we’re still new,” says Siren Tara

Forde. The three teams that took part would like to see the event become an annual competition. “We’re just really thrilled that it all went so well and the support we got,” says Tara.

Suter upgrade questionedThe idea of building a brand new art gal-lery instead of trying to “make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” at the Suter has been floated this week.Nelson City Councillor Paul Matheson says it is worthwhile investigating whether the $6.9 million council is proposing to

spend on upgrading the Suter could be better spent building a brand new facility at Rutherford Park. Discussion opens this week on the long term plan and Paul says he will be asking the Suter if that option has been explored as he thinks it will make much better use of the money. “We spent $3million on the cricket pavilion at Saxton Field and that is

fantastic. What could we do with $6mil-lion at Rutherford Park for an art gal-lery? Sometimes we just need to step out-side that comfort zone that we have built around a project and have a look outside the square.”But Craig Potton, the chair of the trust board that runs the Suter Art Gallery, says the Suter’s history cannot be ignored and

he believes the cost would be around dou-ble that of the current proposal.“We have a design and a feel for that space that we are happy with and it incorporates the oldest gallery in New Zealand, on our own property. That site of the gallery is the longest running public sited gallery in

The Air Nelson hangar is temporar-ily holding what could be the only flying Avro Anson Mk I bomber in existence. After almost a decade of museum life, it was fully restored by Wakefield man Bill Reid and the 1943 aircraft looks set to be flying as early as next weekend. The project has taken Bill ten years to complete. The length of time had to be stretched as a world-wide search for parts took much longer than expected because of its rarity. Bill, along with his wife Ro-byn, travelled to Australia and England on

battle

Natureland is again in for a fight for sur-

vival after the trust that runs the zoo an-

nounced last week that it was pulling the

plug on managing it.

The Orana Wildlife Trust told Nelson City

Council that it was withdrawing from op-

erating the park because of the impact the

Canterbury earthquakes has had on its

own park.

NCC is now waiting on a staff report be-

fore discussing the future of the zoo at a

meeting next Tuesday, June 26.

Mayor Aldo Miccio says the news is a blow

but he understands the situation facing

Orana.“We appreciate the effort that they’ve put

into Natureland to date and understand

that they’re facing some pretty huge chal-

lenges in Christchurch which have meant

they can’t focus on improving Natureland

as much as they had intended to.”

Orana Wildlife Trust took over the opera-

tion of Natureland in October 2008. It will

operate as usual until a decision on its fu-

ture is made. One possibility is to call for

expressions of interest for another opera-

tor to take over running Natureland.

“We’ll move forward to considering the

options and discuss them next week.

Hopefully we can find a good long term

Volunteer work

‘best job ever’

SPCA volunteers usually receive thanks in the form

of a wagging tail or affectionate purr. This week,

those acknowledging their efforts will be much

more eloquent.

Reina Flavell and Alice Robinson are amongst

more than 150 young Nelsonians nominated for the

Youth Volunteer Awareness Recognition Event to

be held this Thursday as part of Volunteer Aware-

ness Week. The event is run by Volunteer Nelson,

Nelson and Tasman councils and Youth Councils,

and The New Hub. It will be held at the Nelson Col-

lege Hall after the New Hub building, the original

venue, was given a poor rating on the recent earth-

quake assessment, leaving activities suspended.

The night will include prominent guest speakers

and a selection of Nelson youth performances will

provide entertainment. Every nominee will receive

a certificate to signify their nomination and the

contribution they make to society.

“Volunteers are the glue that make our commu-

nities stick together and there are a lot of young,

A Cawthron scientist has se-cured a $300,000 research grant, one of only a handful of successful grants to go to a researcher from outside of the country’s six main universities.Dr Kirsty Smith received her grant from the Marsden Fund earlier this month, which is administered by the Royal So-ciety of New Zealand on behalf of the government.Kirsty says she is delighted “and shocked” with the grant, which will see her study the ef-fects of global warming on sea squirts. The research will see if species can adapt to climate

change fast enough to avoid ex-tinction.Kirsty and her colleague, Dr Francisco Prosdocimi from Brazil, will grow sea squirts in the laboratory, and then alter their environment by varying the temperature and salinity of the water over six-week peri-ods. They will test whether this leads to changes that increase the sea squirts’ ability to adapt to their changing environment, and whether any modifications are passed on to future genera-tions. Kirsty says the sea squirts are a pest in our waters, but are na-

tive in Japan. “It is currently unknown if species can adapt rapidly enough to cope with the predicted changes associ-ated with ocean acidification and global warming,” she says.Cawthron Institute chief ex-ecutive, Professor Charles Ea-son, says the award is excellent recognition for one of the in-dependent research institute’s many promising young scien-tists. “This project is a great ex-ample of how Cawthron scien-tists apply excellent science to topical challenges or opportu-nities that have real relevance for New Zealand.”

POWER BILL SAVINGS: Consumers from Nelson visited the What’s My Number website more than 750 times during winter to check if they could get a better deal on their electricity bill, with their average estimated savings calculated at $283.92 per annum. According to the statistics, released by the Electricity Authority, some results from the site identified estimated savings of over $400 per annum by switching power companies. There were 976 actual switches in Nelson and 96,407 nationally over winter. To find out if you’re getting the best deal for your power, visit www.whatsmynumber.org.nz.

CANNABIS GROWN IN TAHUNA: Police executed a search warrant at an industrial address in Tahunanui last Wednesday and discovered cannabis being grown and processed on the premises. A 50 year old local man has been charged with cultivating cannabis and possession of cannabis. He was due to appear in the Nelson District Court today, November 25.

MAITAI PLANTING: The Friends of the Maitai planted 1200 native trees and flaxes in September this year and they are beginning to take root. But the team would like to see Groom Creek flourish without the need of herbicide. People from around New Zealand and Australia have helped the Tadmor com-munity raise $35,000 to save its church, just in time for the historic building's centenary to be held on December 7.The Anglican Diocesan Trust was plan-ning to sell the disused church earlier this year after it received an offer from a private buyer. But the Tadmor community objected to the sale saying it wanted to keep the church and its adjacent cemetery open to the public and started raising funds to buy back the church. The Anglican Diocesan Trust had put a price tag of $35,000 on the church and last month the Tadmor Church Society reached that target. "We were always optimistic from the start that we would raise the funds, be-cause we received so much support," so-ciety treasurer, Brent Hodgkinson, says. Brent says they received donations from one woman who said "my grand-mother is buried there", while another donor said her grandmother donated the stained glass window that remains in the church today. The window was donated in memory of her husband, a doctor, who died in a motor vehicle ac-cident near the now-named Doctor's Creek on Spooners Saddle."As soon as the word got out we had calls from everywhere. We had a dona-tion from a Nelson couple who got mar-ried in the church and we even had one

from a woman living in Australia after she saw the story about the church in the Nelson Weekly - it's been very hum-bling." Brent says the response was so over-whelming they raised enough money to repile and paint the church and still have some left over for a maintenance fund. He hopes the church will become a focal point for the community, after it was deconsecrated in a service by Bish-op Richard Ellena on November 16 so that it can be used by all denominations and for public events. Tadmor Church Society chairman, Bruce Moffitt, whose grandfather do-nated the land for the church in 1914, says he is delighted that the church is

remaining in the community. "The people donated all of the materials and everything to build the church, so it belongs to the community. A lot of peo-ple are still being buried in the cemetery and we want to keep it operating - we want to make sure people with relatives buried there can still visit.”And now the society is planning to have a service to celebrate saving their church and commemorating its centenary."It was consecrated on 28 November, 1913, so we are having a special service on December 7," Brent says. "We have sent out special invitations to all the people who made donations and will be publicising the service so anyone is welcome to attend."

Nelson sitcom – Tuesday, November 11: Needing $7000 to reach the target of $20,000, the people behind the B-Rabbit sitcom approached Nelson Weekly for a story to help spread the word of the show and encourage people to donate. Just two days after the article ran the group had reached their target and have already started filming. We’ll keep you updated on how the pilot is coming along and when you’ll be able to watch it.

Andrea Campbell – Tuesday, November 18: With a total of $170,000 needed to undergo an operation in Israel to potentially reverse the effects of her MS, Andrea and husband George Campbell have already received a huge response from the public. With people donating to their Givealittle page and plenty of ideas being shared for fundraising activities, they are very appreciative of the support. Donations for Andrea’s operation can be made at www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/andreamcampbell.

Foster parents – Tuesday, November 11: Francis Farmer of Child, Youth and Family says they were “delighted” with the interest in their recent “Ways to Care” training sessions held earlier this month. It attracted 22 participates all interested in learning more about becoming foster parents. The final day, of this round of training, is planned for Wednesday 3 December. They will run another “Ways to Care” training programme in early 2015, and already have 15 people wanting to attend. For more information about the training please phone Heather Couper on 989 4200.

Bands set to

battle

Natureland is again in for a fight for sur-

vival after the trust that runs the zoo an-

nounced last week that it was pulling the

plug on managing it.

The Orana Wildlife Trust told Nelson City

Council that it was withdrawing from op-

erating the park because of the impact the

Canterbury earthquakes has had on its

own park.

NCC is now waiting on a staff report be-

fore discussing the future of the zoo at a

meeting next Tuesday, June 26.

Mayor Aldo Miccio says the news is a blow

but he understands the situation facing

Orana.“We appreciate the effort that they’ve put

into Natureland to date and understand

that they’re facing some pretty huge chal-

lenges in Christchurch which have meant

they can’t focus on improving Natureland

as much as they had intended to.”

Orana Wildlife Trust took over the opera-

tion of Natureland in October 2008. It will

operate as usual until a decision on its fu-

ture is made. One possibility is to call for

expressions of interest for another opera-

tor to take over running Natureland.

“We’ll move forward to considering the

options and discuss them next week.

Volunteer work

‘best job ever’

SPCA volunteers usually receive thanks in the form

of a wagging tail or affectionate purr. This week,

those acknowledging their efforts will be much

more eloquent.

Reina Flavell and Alice Robinson are amongst

more than 150 young Nelsonians nominated for the

Youth Volunteer Awareness Recognition Event to

be held this Thursday as part of Volunteer Aware-

ness Week. The event is run by Volunteer Nelson,

Nelson and Tasman councils and Youth Councils,

and The New Hub. It will be held at the Nelson Col-

lege Hall after the New Hub building, the original

venue, was given a poor rating on the recent earth-

quake assessment, leaving activities suspended.

The night will include prominent guest speakers

and a selection of Nelson youth performances will

provide entertainment. Every nominee will receive

a certificate to signify their nomination and the

contribution they make to society.

“Volunteers are the glue that make our commu-

nities stick together and there are a lot of young,

Three new seats have been donated to the community by the Rotary Club of Nelson West to enhance some of Nelson’s best walkways. The seats, located alongside the Orphanage Stream walkway in Stoke, were constructed over three weeks by the Rotary Club of Nelson West in conjunction with donated cash and materials. The family of the late Bernie Stevenson, from Nelson, donated $1,000 to the Rotary Club of Nelson West this year to be used within the community. As the club had constructed and donated seats to the community in the past, they approached Nelson City Council

and asked them to provide suitable locations for three more seats. The council suggested the Orphanage Stream walkway area and supplied the club with engineering plans.Nelson mayor Rachel Reese, unveiled the seats at an official opening ceremony last week. Over 20 people attended, including representatives from Gibbons Holdings who donated wood, Tata Steel and Topliss who supplied steel, metal struts and tubes and Stoke Garden and Landscapes who provided the concrete. Rotary Club of Nelson West president, Nigel Sutton says the club has received positive feedback from residents who are already enjoying the seats.

Nelson is on the hunt for some new public art and the city has $100,000 to spend. The money is being put up by Nelson City Council, with Arts Council Nelson managing the projects. Two of the sites intially signalled out as needing art are the new Maitai walkway and central city pocket parks and walkways.Arts Council Nelson is calling for expressions of interest for public art responses. Proposals that are sought may be those fully funded through the Arts Fund and also those which could attract “match funding” from the artist, community or other stakeholders.Works for non-prioritised sites are likely to be given more favourable consideration should a percentage of “match funding” be found by the artist or community toward the proposal. The final number of proposals selected will be dependent on their quality and available budget restraints.Lloyd Harwood, ACN community arts manager, says the brief has purposely been left open.“The idea is to encourage artists to think outside the square. We hope to attract a wide range of innovative and creative ideas which will all be considered.”Nelson City Council community services committee chair Pete Rainey, says the call for public art should lead to some exciting, accessible and original additions to the Nelson city landscape. “Public art plays an important role in enhancing and enriching the quality environment Nelson offers visitors and residents. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the vibrancy of our city centre and we look forward to the response from the creative community.” More information is available at www.acn.org.nz. Closing date for applications is Tuesday 16 December 2014 at 4pm.

Dodgy dentist:Re your front page article on the dentist Nick Smith. In 2010 I had

the misfortune to have him totally botch a number of my teeth. I had to threaten le-gal action against him to even get a refund for the dreadful work he'd done. It cost me another $15k, six months of treatment

with specialist Todd Gracia (often under a microscope), to try and save my teeth. He did a fantastic job. I got the princely sum of $795 back from ACC as it could only be proven damage was done to one tooth. A number of the great local dentists tried to get the Dental Council to strike Smith off because of my case and many others simi-

lar. Good job he's finally gone. The guy was reckless, greedy and incompetent.Ricky, Nelson.

He has stuffed up mine and my family's teeth! My

Oh, that is awesome, I'm happy for you Stacey, and

I think that dirty dodgy dentist should have all his assets taken to

Yes, they are amazing!! Already had my first appointment and go-

Cake van a pleasant surprise:I was surprised and pleased when buying a dessert at the cake van

Car parking in and around the Rich-mond Mall will be easier this Christmas after the mall leases space at the Rich-mond A&P showgrounds for staff of mall businesses to park their cars:

Cool initiative I say. At least staff can get from the parking spaces

to their workplaces safely, especially if it's dark. Janelle Thorpe.

Great idea! Keryn Sheppard.

What a great idea, thumbs up.Heather Waters.

Great idea. I had to drive around for ages today to get a park just to

Approximately seven minute walk each way, think of how many

healthy workers at the Mall.... brilliant idea especially for the paying customers, and yes shuttle is available!! Ka Pai to the or-ganisers of this fantastic initiative for Rich-mond!! Sarah-Hope Bailey.

It would be a great idea if you ca-tered for all the staff that work at

the mall, I'm sure(I know) there are people who work outside the time a shuttle is go-ing to be running, what are you doing for them? Verte Nails & Beauty.

TUESDAY 25 November 2014 NelsonLocally Owned and Operated Weekly

When Hugh Neill moved to Nelson in 1974 he didn’t know a soul. So, when he saw an advert seeking actors for a local play he decided it would be a great way to meet some new people. But it wasn’t just new friends Hugh found, his passion for acting started with that advert and has lasted four decades and seen him perform in hundreds of shows. Now Hugh is preparing for his final shows, the first of which will be at the Mudcastle this Friday and Saturday night. He then has a show at the Playhouse in March and a performance at the Theatre Royal in May. “I’m just getting on a bit,” he says. “I’m drawing the pension now so it’s up to younger people to pick it up. It takes more energy than people appreciate. They think you just front up and perform, but there is quite a bit of preparation and it’s just getting harder. Some of them are quite physical.”Over the years Hugh has performed his interactive shows to thousands of people. He draws on scenes from Blackadder, Fawtly Towers and the Rocky Horror Picture Show.He says for his final fling he will be doing a “potpourri of entertainment”. “We’ll start with a murder-mystery and then it will morph into Fawtly Towers, then Blackadder and finish off with the Rocky Horror. Usually I would just do one of those, so it will be quite different.”Hugh has been doing the interactive shows since 1990 and had his busiest year in 2007 when he did 80 shows. “I love it but it’s very audience dependant.

If you have a good audience, it’s fantastic. I’ve had a few horrors but most have been tremendous.”The worst show he’s done was at the Rutherford Hotel for a conference of 200 people, of which only four were female. He says mid-way through his show the rugby started and the room emptied. “That was rather frustrating and heart-breaking,” he jokes. The best, he says, was at the Playhouse where he was told by the owner to leave one woman alone because she’d had a tough time lately. “So I just kept an eye on her and I could see her gradually relaxing as the evening went on, and by the end I had her up on stage. We were dancing together. She revealed to me that she had had breast cancer, had a breast removed and had been through chemo and this was the first night where she felt she could come out. She said it was the best therapy that she could have asked for.”Over the years Hugh has worked with eight different actors who played Basil Faulty and almost as many who played

Sybil Fawlty. He says saying goodbye to the shows will be sad, but he’s loved entertaining people all over the country and acting had became a total passion. “When I first arrived in Nelson in 1974 I didn’t know anybody and I just happened to see this ad saying 'actors wanted' for this play at the Theatre Royal, and I thought this would be a good way to meet people. Being a guy you’re almost guaranteed a role and I just loved it."Although the passion for theatre remains and will mean Hugh will still be in the audience at most of the locals shows, he says age is catching up on him. “The trouble with theatre is as you get older it’s a damned sight harder to learn the lines. When I was in my 30s I thought I was bulletproof, I could learn a whole script in two weeks, now it’s two months and then you still don’t have the same confidence.”For tickets to Hugh’s show this weekend email [email protected] or call 543 2113.

Two lanes merge to one lane

Only one vehicle lane and one cycle lane through each pedestrian crossing

Two lanes remain

Only one lane directly out of roundabout

Nelson City Council has almost finished work to change the layout on Haven Road to make the crossing outside Auckland Point School safer. The main change is the road being reduced to one lane through the pedestrian crossing, to make it safer and easier to use.

As you can see on the plan, there are some changes to be aware of:• Two lanes merge into one just after the Halifax/Haven round about

heading out of town, expanding back to two lanes after the pedestrian crossing

• Only one lane after the QEII/Haven roundabout as you head into town,

expanding back out to two lanes after the pedestrian crossing.

Other minor changes:• New give way at the road through the traffic island by the fountain• Kerb build outs on both sides of the pedestrian crossing• A new marked cycle lane for cyclists travelling straight through the

Halifax/Haven roundabout towards St Vincent Street.

Please take extra care and be patient while everyone gets used to the changed road layout.

It’s not very often you get to cre-ate a design on the computer, print it and eat it too, but that is just what 120 children did when they attended a robotics and three di-mensional printing workshop last week. The seminar, run by Mindkits, a robotics and physical comput-ing company from Auckland, was held at Broadgreen Intermediate School. It saw children printing designs using chocolate ink onto bread instead of the usual paper. “3D printing is not fast because it prints one layer at a time, print-ing in chocolate allows the kids to see the results instantly, cause and effect is a really powerful teach-ing tool,” says Tim Carr, CEO of Mindkits. The children were given a piece of grid paper and worked on a series of lines and codes to make a de-sign, using a game similar to Bat-tleships. The Tinkercad computer programme generated the design and sent it to Cura, a writing pro-gramme that prepared the 3D file for printing, using chocolate.

“The overall theme is making ro-botics and 3D printing fun, the hardest thing is to find something the kids can hang their hat on, so we make the sessions about prob-lem solving, which is a powerful teaching tool,” says Tim. Tim has run robotics and 3D printing courses throughout Auckland but says Nelson has seen the biggest uptake, which he sug-gests could mean that Nelson is underserviced when it comes to technology.“I am amazed at how focused and eager the kids are here in Nelson. Perhaps principals of schools need to open up more to the opportuni-ties for technology, the demand is definitely there,” says Tim.The workshops for primary, inter-mediate and college students were held over two days and organized by The Ministry of Inspiration, a group that supports young people in their academic learning across the Top of the South Island. The Mindkits team will be back in Nelson in April, for further in-formation, go to The Ministry of Inspiration website at www.minis-tryofinspiration.org.

Locally Owned and Operated Weekly

This year, Duke & Cooke is celebrating 50 years of valu-ing properties in the Nelson region with a look back on the history of the business and its establishment in 1964. Charles Duke was a well known identity of Nelson, es-pecially remembered for his trademark bow tie and hat. He had a vibrant personality and was one of those peo-ple who everyone knew. Charles was born in Dunedin in 1888 and started his career as an architect in 1914. After working as a journalist in Australia, earning the Mili-

tary Cross in WW1 and working, post-war, as a farmer, Charles became a qualified valuer in 1944, and in 1964, at the age of 76, formed a partnership with Peter Cooke. Peter, born in 1920, was also well known for his sense of humour, quick wit and passion for sailing. Duke & Cooke have grown significantly from its days as a two-man part-nership, now employing seven valuers and four adminis-tration staff. From its initial beginnings to today, Duke & Cooke have

been at the forefront of the valuation profession in the Nelson region. While

initially only offering an urban-based valuation service, the company now provides a full range of rural, residen-tial and commercial valuation services to both local and national clients. Cur-rent directors Murray Lauchlan, Dick Bennison and Barry Rowe each head up

one of the sectors, supported by both qualified and grad-uate valuers. Technology has always been an important element in the company, used to enhance their business performance for the benefit of clients. This has created a set of well-developed systems and processes compared to many other valuation companies. In 2012, Duke & Cooke became a Quality Assured valuation business through the Property Institute of New Zealand’s Quality Assurance Accreditation Scheme. This meant having systems in place for controlling workplace quality and performance standards, and means their clients can be confident in

the values and qual-ity of services they will experience with the company. In the same year they also became a member of ValGroup, a collective of 11 valuation com-panies throughout New Zealand, focused on growing business opportunities and advancing the best business practices. They are now on the management board of the company with a desire to see it expand further. This shows a

commitment to professionalism and the best interests of their clients that is hard to beat. From Duke & Cooke’s original formation as a partner-ship in 1964, to its transition to a company in 1991, the name has not changed, and director of 31 years, Murray Lauchlan, says it’s because of the heritage and the history that is behind it, and a reputation that stretches through-

out New Zealand. History is part of its exceptionality, along with their approach to business and the work-place environment. “One of the phi-losophy’s of Duke & Cooke is that we have always worked on being a team of professionals; professional valuers and professional administration staff. Everyone here at Duke & Cooke has always been treated as part of a team that is focused on getting the best job done for our clients. We have a really good team spirit here, everyone gets on with everyone else and it creates a great atmosphere. When we’re employ-ing anyone new for the company, we don’t just look at them in terms of their

qualifications, but how they’re going to fit in to the overall dynamics of the of-fice,” says Murray. Murray is a born and bred valuer, and is currently the longest serving direc-tor, having been with the company for 31 of its 50 years. “When I left college I didn’t know what else to do. I had a brother-in-law who was a valuer and it looked like a pretty good job; a bit of indoor work and a bit of outdoor work. That’s what appealed to me at that stage, and it’s been a good decision.” Because of the specialist skills required for the job, many valuers around the country have only ever been in the profession, but it’s the challenge and change of the

That’s what appealed to me at that stage, and it’s been a good decision.” Because of the specialist skills required for the job, many valuers around the country have only ever been in the profession, but it’s the challenge and change of the

job that has kept him in the position for all these years. “Every valuation you do is differ-ent, you’re meeting people who are motivated because they’ve got property investments they want to manage and get the best they can out of them and the markets is always changing, so it’s always challeng-ing in terms of completing the valuation process.” To mark the half century milestone, Duke & Cooke will be having a staff re-union, inviting all those who have previ-ously been part of the business, includ-ing the late Peter Cooke’s wife Elaine, for cake and a good catch up. Nelson TraiNiNg Centre

Youth Guarantee

For 27 years Nelson Training Centre has been training hospitality students for local industry at a foundation level of skills and proficiency. We are accredited with NZQA and Service IQ (Industry Training Organisation) approved and of-fers

• National Certificate in Hospitality Entry Skills level 2 •NCEA level 2- Vocational Pathways- Service Sector

“Although it is important to gain qualifications.”It is just as important to ingrain the understanding of the attitudes that will develop focus, systems, routines, solid work habits, safety and hygiene prac-tises, developing consistent quality of pace and performance.

We have developed a con-textual environment that as-sesses learners on practical observation and naturally occurring evidence with all unit standards, including in-dustry literacy and numera-cy skill development.

Success through compe-tence and confidence devel-ops self-esteem and a sense of direction. We use a Path-way Action Plan designed so individual learners can take

their own responsibility for long-term goals and aspirations.

We have operated a registered café / restaurant for many years. Our café is open to the public every Thursday of the school terms, offering learners the real life daily skills required by industry.

This includes, all front of house and kitchen positions, and allows learners to gain multi skills yet still see focus on their natural abilities, which may be in a specific area.

Our free Friday invited guest luncheons, give more detailed skills and cus-tomer service and interaction. These include buffets, set menu, and finger food functions.

We have had the good fortune to serve many voluntary groups and organi-sations on these days, giving back to the people in the community who are

often taken for granted:

Hospice, Big Brother Big Sisters mentors, Food bank, Salvation Army, Trade Aid, Lifeline, Cathedral Parishioners, Stoke Senior groups, Support Works, Youth Service, Rotary, SASH, Citizens Advice.

We are grateful that we can offer both training and serve such wonderful community organisations. This shows that funding for training can be greater than the single intent it is meant.

We also started the Modern Apprenticeship scheme in Nelson graduating the first apprentices in the south Island. Bouterays Restaurant, Hopgoods Restaurant, Anchor bar and Grill, Rutherford Hotel, all took on apprentices that completed their training at these establishments.

We have been 100% locally-owned and operated for all this time, under-standing the local needs and of the highs and lows that occur in this industry throughout the seasons.

Our philosophy that has withstood the test of time is simple.

“Attitude Determines Performance” All our staff hold true to this motto, and the right action that this instils in all who have passed through the training centre.

Our tutors are proficient and up to date with current trends, but more impor-tantly, able to drive learners to understanding what it takes to gain sustain-able employment, and the attitudes this entails.

We have a roll-in, roll-out enrolment, so learners can join throughout the year.

This allows peer support and encouragement while sharing skills and knowl-edge with each other.

“The best way to find out if you know something is to teach it to someone else”.

The training is free for 16 – 19 years olds, funded by Tertiary Education Com-mission

The rain appeared the morn-ing of the first day of the 121st Golden Edge Nelson A&P show, however, the sun came out to play on Sunday and so did the people.Show manager, Annette Rob-inson, says that although Sat-urday’s rain kept people away in the morning, Sunday’s sun-shine brought in the crowds. “Sunday was absolutely fantas-tic, I haven’t seen those kinds of numbers ever on a Sunday, the whole day had a great at-mosphere and we couldn’t have asked for more. "We received great feedback from our stallholders and we are very pleased with how the show went,” says Annette.New to the show this year was the Vortex Spas Top of The South strongman competi-tion, which saw both men and women competing in events such as a log clean and press, lifting of a huge atlas stone and a 25 metre hand-over-hand truck pull. The more traditional competi-tions of wood chopping, sheep shearing, equestrian, dog trials and animal judging remained strong with the same number of animals registered as in pre-

vious years.“The animal judging went well and everyone involved was re-ally happy with how it went,” says Annette. The animal nursery, complete with lambs, ponies, puppies, goats, rabbits and new reptile cave was a huge hit, and the

horticulture and handcraft ex-hibits also proved quite popu-lar. Staples of the show, hot dogs and candy floss, were abun-dant in the carnival area, along with laughing clowns, the fer-ris wheel, swinging chairs and giant slide.

At last – Heck German Smallgood is open again! It’s been a tough time re-cently for Ulrich Heck, but it’s great to see him with a smile on his face, and back making German and European sausages and smallgoods again. Ulrich, his wife Petra, and two sons relocated to Nelson after the Christch-

urch Earthquakes and had done a fine job of re-establishing his German smallgoods butchery in the Nelson Premises at Wakatu Industrial Estate when he was hit by the devastating floods in 2012, but after a big tidy up he was back in business. As if earth-quakes and floods weren’t enough for a small family business to endure, six months ago he lost his premises in a

fire. Showing true grit, Ulrich found a suitable building just down the road and has spent the last six months fitting it out ready to open again much to the delight of his regular lo-cal customers and those who order his products on-line.Ulrich would like to pass a very spe-cial thank you to Horst and Justine from Petite Fleur who welcomed him into their commercial kitch-en so he could con-tinue to meet his regular customer’s needs while his new building was being finished. Heck German Smallgoods is a German gourmet butchery, produc-ing authentic Ger-man and European quality smallgoods, sausages, salamis, beersticks and spe-cially cooked and smoked meats. All of Ulrich’s products are glu-ten free. They contain NO fillers at all. They only use premium New Zealand meats and products are prepared with quality spices selected in Ger-many. They’re based on original German recipes, enhanced and perfected by the Heck butcher family over the last 150 years. The Heck family have a proud tradition in the art of butchery. It started in the 1850s as a butchery and restaurant in the southern German town of Heidelberg. Since then his family have developed new and perfected traditional German sausage

recipes and handed them down from generation to generation. What has also been passed on was the passion for the German way of sausage mak-

ing. When Ulrich set-tled in Christchurch he noticed the de-mand for quality sau-sages and smallgoods. Aiming to bring the best of Germany’s au-thentic art of butchery and sausage making to Kiwi’s and Europe-ans who were search-ing for products just like those at home, he opened ‘Heck Ger-man Smallgoods Ltd’ in 2006. “We use for all our sausages natural cas-ings. The exclusive use of only natural food ingredients and preservatives helps us to maintain their healthy and authen-tic German charac-ter,” says Ulrich.”And every single item is passionately hand-crafted.” Ulrich has a wonder-ful website where you can find a full list of his product range and

a description of each product, so you’ll be able to have a shopping list ready when you call in. If you live a distance away, or would like to send prod-ucts to someone you know, you can also order online. Imagine how delighted friends and fam-ily will be if their Christmas gift is a tasty treat just like they remember from their childhood. Check out the customer testimonials on the web-site to find out just how good they taste. Better yet, call in to the butchery and discover how to turn a simple meal into a culinary delight.

We're coming into the time of year when peo-ple involved in the cannabis cultivation busi-ness are getting their plots established.People growing drugs in your area, or in areas you use recreationally, could be a risk to your property. Every year during the cannabis sea-son we get increased reports of crime, such as theft of electric fence units, theft of fuel and other items from farm sheds. The Police operation is already under way gathering information about where people are establishing their plots. Information from the public is essential to this work and over the coming months we will be following up on those leads. If you see something that doesn't look quite right - such as people heading into the bush with gardening implements or containers of water - you're probably right in thinking they are tending cannabis plants. My advice is to get any details you can about the person, including a physical description and details of the vehicle they are driving. You can call your local Police Station with the in-formation, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Your information could make a differ-ence.

powerboats, launches and yachts throughout New Zealand, mainly in the South Island. Their cover is comprehensive and includes protection on the road, on the water and even in storage. Customers are secure in the knowledge that they are protected in the event of fire, burglary, theft or earth-quake. Third party collision liability is included and salvage recovery and loss prevention cover is automatically built in. That means that when a claim occurs, Nautical Insurance will work at the sharp end to arrange salvage and recov-ery, organize assessors and provide immediate advice as to where to go and what to do.

Havelock Slipway offers a full range of vessel maintenance, alterations and repairs. With a competent and professional work force, any project undertaken is performed with pride and quality workmanship, which has earned them good support from customers. Havelock Slipway has extended its facilities to incorporate a new slipway and fifth cradle. With hull-friendly material on the cradle arms and two 100 tonne capacity cradles, the slipway is ready to take on any project. They make it easy for their customers in Nelson too, with visits to quote prices and they can even organise for the vessel to be steamed to Havelock by a competent skipper, however, these services are only available for major work. For re-paints, re-fits and cabin or structural altera-tions, Havelock Slipway has you covered. Give them a call on 03 574 2476 for anything from annual servicing of anti-foul and anodes to light engineering, sandblasting, vessel motor servicing and stainless steel fabrication.

Good fishing has been on offer this month, according to the anglers that Fish & Game rangers have been conduct-ing licence checks on. Plenty of well-conditioned trout have been observed in the upper and lower Wairau River and tributaries, Upper Buller tributaries, Maruia River, and Wangapeka/mid-Motueka Rivers. Rumour has it some large, 10 pound-plus, fish have also been caught this sea-son. Popular family day fishing options within a reasonable drive of Nelson include the Nelson Lakes for boat enthusiasts, or alternatively the Motueka or Rai/

Pelorus rivers, which can be a good option combined with a family picnic and/or swim as summer progresses. The Rai and lower Pelorus rivers hold rainbow trout which can be susceptible to mid-day lure fishing, the preferred time for family trips. Visit www.fishandgame.org.nz for more infor-mation, or see Fish & Game at 66 Champion Rd Richmond to grab a “Getting started in trout fish-ing” DVD and river access maps.

Get your boat up to scratch before the summer season and talk to JLE, your electrical experts, who offer efficient ser-vice for the fishing industry, to charter operators and specialized boat owners. Their marine-specific division servic-es the Top of the South, from Nelson, Golden Bay and Blenheim, to the West Coast, and everywhere in between. As NZ registered electricians, the team remain up-to-date with the latest in marine technology, and can also offer periodic inspections of vessels on the marina with a NZ-registered inspector on their team. JLE can offer a solution for all marine electrical systems, includ-ing new builds. They recently carried out the electrical design, installation, and compliance work on the Waikaia Gold dredge, a purpose-built vessel by Reliance Engineering, that harvests gold while floating in a pit 18m below ground level. Measuring 12m x 26m, the barge is like a small floating two storey building, which processes up to 250m³per hour and produces more gold than was originally expected. JLE are well equipped to look after all your elec-trical requirements, with no job too big

or small for the team to handle. To gain additional experi-ence in work such as Hazardous Areas and an appreciation of large projects, some our Nelson-based crew have recently spent time in Australia, working on an oil drilling platform and a rendering plant in Darwin.

RATS RATS RATS!When the first immigrants arrived in Nelson, many found they had to share their bedrooms with rats that were so plentiful that even poison had little effect. The native

rats, or “kiori”, had no fear of man. Alfred Saunders, an early settler on the Fifeshire, described this plight: ‘At night we had to keep a stick in hand to thrash them away from the candle.’

Negative thought to be of Montague Haydon Sloan. The original Tyree studio wrapper is believed to have been incorrectly labelled ‘Sloan, Alfred Kennedy’. There were three records imported with this name. Two of the negatives are of the same man who is believed to be Alfred Ken-nedy Sloan and this third negative is of a different man. The man in this negative can be identified as Montague Haydon Sloan through re-search displayed on the British badge forum website.Sloan was born on 15 November 1894 in Reefton, New Zealand. Before World War One Sloan worked as a general farm hand in Herbertville. Sloan served as a private during WWI with the Wellington Infantry

Battalion. He embarked on 14 De-cember 1914 from Wellington for Egypt. On the Cenotaph database his next

of kin is listed as William James Sloan (father), 51 Milton Street, Nel-son, New Zealand. This image is be-lieved to have been taken just before Sloan embarked with the Wellington Infantry Battalion’s 2nd Reinforce-ments. The 2nd R e i n f o rc e m e nt s and all the follow-ing reinforcements were not supplied with their uniforms until they arrived at

Trentham Camp as such he is wear-ing a 1912 uniform. He is also not wearing any badges because at this time he would not have been as-signed to a company. Sloan survived the war and was discharged on 8 February 1919.

Private Montague Haydon Sloan (b. 1894) (Serial No. 10/1338 and 5/1338A).

COMPETITION WIN-NER: Neil Green was the winner of the "win a deer" competition run by the Gun Shop in Motueka. Neil did the hunt with Doughboy Safaris, near Murchison, on Friday and is pictured with his prize. Everyone who spent $50 or more with the Gun Shop in October was eligible for the prize and co-owner James Smith says it was a hugely successful competition.

A charity sailing event in Port Nelson raised money for the Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust last Sunday. The race was a joint effort by the Nelson Rotary Club and the Tasman Bay Cruising Club.Various local businesses sponsored teams of their employees and guests to race as crew on-board yachts provided by the TBCC. Spectators were also sponsored, and they were carried on-board launches belonging to TBCC members.Nine yachts took part over a course in Port Nel-son, which took around an hour and a half. Four

spectator-carrying boats were also in the water, amongst the watchers was a group of thirty-sev-en from "Big Brothers, Big Sisters" organisation. Commodore of the club, Tam Hazan, says every-one enjoyed themselves."Certainly most of the participants had never, ever been on a yacht before and all seem to have enjoyed themselves. [There were] huge smiles and excited chatter when they returned to TBCC clubhouse, after enjoying the exhilarating condi-tions during the event."Prizes were kindly sponsored by Mitre10 Mega, and presented by Mayor Rachel Reese.

Members of the Nelson Cadets marching team ready for compe-tition at Broadgreen Intermediate on Saturday. They are, from left, Skye Jenkins, 5, Skye Yates, 5, Heidi Yates, 7, and Haedyn-Ava Hansen, 4. Photo: Monique Bergman.

Thirty seven marchers from Nelson and one team from Marlborough competed in the Nelson Marching Double Day competition, held at Broad-green Intermediate School last Saturday. The competition was open to children aged between five years and 12 years, and each team consisted of between seven and 14 members. It was run in preparation for the 2014 South Island Championships which will be held in Dunedin on December 7. Nelson March-ing will be sending two teams, the under 12 years and under 16 years and both teams have been training for the champi-onships since July. They will participate in the review and inspection routine, technical drill routine, set march plan and display march. Marching Nelson will be recruiting new members in March and April next year. If you are interested in joining a team, please con-tact Jocelyn on 021566253.

Plenty of reports coming in now of snapper being caught around the bay.I have heard of two fish over 30 lb caught on set-line and fish up to 85cm on rod and reel. With set-lines being a highly pro-ductive method of catching a good feed of snapper, we would also like to mention the practice of catch and release. I personally am not opposed to anyone catching their personal best biggest snapper and keeping it to get a photo, the actual weight and also to show to the wife, kids or family. However, in saying that, as a club we encourage our members to "fish by length" by measuring the length of the fish for our competi-tion and also for a nationwide com-petition.This gives us the chance to catch and release these bigger prime breeding snapper after taking a couple of 'live' photos and, of course, measuring. It can be ex-tremely satisfying to watch those big fish swim off into the depths right by the side of the boat. So, to aid with this method, if you choose

to release some of the bigger ones and keep the “pannies” as your eaters, then try to only leave your set-lines down for about an hour. This will keep the fish in a reason-able state of health for release and still be plenty of time to catch them if they are in that area. Release at the side of the boat in the water if possible, or use a net to gather the fish and contain it while the hook is removed, wet your hands with salt-water, get some shots and then let it go over the side.Kenepuru has had a couple of de-cent fish caught recently and plenty of seven gill sharks are still around. Rabbit Island is fishing well for those with kayaks, kontikis, kite long-liners and nets set out at low tide. There's a fishing competition on Saturday 29th hosted by Tasman Bay Anglers Club, it’s not too late to enter up until 5pm at ENL Nelson, or simply go for a look at the weigh in, down at the Motueka boat ramp on Saturday at 4pm.Enjoy the awesome place we live in by getting out for a fish from boat, wharf or land.

Jacks netball coach Robyn Leonard's dedi-cation to the sport has been recognised, winning the Thank a Sport Maker Award run by Sport Tasman, Sport New Zealand and Lotto New Zealand. The award was held on November 14 to recognise the vital role volunteers play in sport across the country and Robyn re-ceived a $500 voucher from the Lotto Vol-unteer Foundation at a function held at the Saxton Oval Pavilion and sponsored by Crowe Horwath. Gymnastics Nelson committee member and event organiser Helen Houghton, and Nelson Bays Pony Club president and coach Dee Needham, were named as runners-up and received $200 vouchers.

Although Robyn was surprised to win the award, she says that it made her reflect on how long she had actually been coaching. She started with a Jacks social team when she was playing premiers about 25 years ago and hasn't stopped, spending the last 15 years coaching the Jacks premier team and last 10 with age group and senior representative teams. "I was looking around at all the people at awards, thinking that so many of them have spent so much time volunteer-ing in sport, but that made me realise I'd been doing it for quite a while too," Robyn says. "It's just something that came along

because they needed someone to coach a team and then, all of a sudden, it takes over your life - I love it so I keep doing it."Robyn says she enjoys the camara-derie and team environment, and seeing players improve and enjoy their netball. She has particularly enjoyed being associated with a successful Jacks premier team and the Nelson and Tasman age group teams, which she says "is really

full-on". Robyn says she has no plans to stop. "What would I do in the winter if I didn't coach netball?" she says.Olympic bronze medal rower, Lynley Cov-

entry, was guest speaker at the Nelson awards that is one of four Sport Tasman is hosting across the top of the South Island, with the others to be held in Blenheim, Kaikoura and Westport. Sport Tasman community sport advisor, Julie Price, says those nominated had giv-en many hours each week to help out in sports they were passionate about. "They are truly inspiring individuals who all have gone that extra mile by putting their hand up so that others can take part in the sport they love.’’ It was estimated that volunteers contrib-uted 50 million hours nationally a year to keep the sport system humming, and more than 50,000 hours locally, she says.

Orana.“We appreciate the effort that they’ve put

into Natureland to date and understand

that they’re facing some pretty huge chal-

lenges in Christchurch which have meant

they can’t focus on improving Natureland

as much as they had intended to.”Orana Wildlife Trust took over the opera-

tion of Natureland in October 2008. It will

operate as usual until a decision on its fu-

ture is made. One possibility is to call for

expressions of interest for another opera-

tor to take over running Natureland.“We’ll move forward to considering the

options and discuss them next week.

Hopefully we can find a good long term

Volunteer work ‘best job ever’SPCA volunteers usually receive thanks in the form

of a wagging tail or affectionate purr. This week,

those acknowledging their efforts will be much

more eloquent.Reina Flavell and Alice Robinson are amongst

more than 150 young Nelsonians nominated for the

Youth Volunteer Awareness Recognition Event to

be held this Thursday as part of Volunteer Aware-

ness Week. The event is run by Volunteer Nelson,

Nelson and Tasman councils and Youth Councils,

and The New Hub. It will be held at the Nelson Col-

lege Hall after the New Hub building, the original

venue, was given a poor rating on the recent earth-

quake assessment, leaving activities suspended.

The night will include prominent guest speakers

and a selection of Nelson youth performances will

provide entertainment. Every nominee will receive

a certificate to signify their nomination and the

contribution they make to society. “Volunteers are the glue that make our commu-

nities stick together and there are a lot of young, SEE PAGE 2Reina Flavell and Alice Robinson are two of the volunteers nominated for the Youth Volunteer Awareness Recognition

Teens work for smokesThe rising cost of cigarettes won’t deter a group of Nelson students despite many of them working part time jobs to pay for their habit.Nelson Weekly spoke with a group of teenage smokers who are either at high school or re-cently finished. All were girls and all started when they were still too young to buy tobacco. Most still are too young. They say they “don’t know” why they smoke but buy their tobacco at Nelson retailers who notoriously don’t ask for ID and if they don’t have enough money to buy a whole pack-et, will go halves with their friends, because they simply can’t go without their daily in-take of nicotine.

The girls paid for their tobacco by working part time jobs out-side of school time with a cou-ple working full time. Most said their parents were against their smoking “but couldn’t do anything”.

Suter upgrade questioned

The idea of building a brand new art gal-

lery instead of trying to “make a silk purse

out of a sow’s ear” at the Suter has been

floated this week.

Nelson City Councillor Paul Matheson

says it is worthwhile investigating whether

the $6.9 million council is proposing to

spend on upgrading the Suter could be

better spent building a brand new facility

at Rutherford Park.

Discussion opens this week on the long

term plan and Paul says he will be asking

the Suter if that option has been explored

as he thinks it will make much better use

of the money. “We spent $3million on the

cricket pavilion at Saxton Field and that is

fantastic. What could we do with $6mil-

lion at Rutherford Park for an art gal-

lery? Sometimes we just need to step out-

side that comfort zone that we have built

around a project and have a look outside

the square.”

But Craig Potton, the chair of the trust

board that runs the Suter Art Gallery, says

the Suter’s history cannot be ignored and

he believes the cost would be around dou-

ble that of the current proposal.

“We have a design and a feel for that space

that we are happy with and it incorporates

the oldest gallery in New Zealand, on our

own property. That site of the gallery is

the longest running public sited gallery in
