EICHER - 1 - ORIGIN The Eichers are of Swiss origin, with their "Heimat" (place of citizenship) at Buchholterberg, near Steffisburg, Switzerland. The meaning of "Eicher" is oak tree. (1) (See Notes below) The Eicher immigrants to Canada, however, left from Upper Alsace, the present-day department of Haut-Rhin, France. According to the researched records, six or seven families or individuals with the Eicher surname settled in Canada in the 1800’s. After some years some of these moved on, while some stayed, and descendants still live in Southern Ontario today. Following is a listing of these seven families or individuals, including a few details: [When Lorraine Roth did her research, she was not able to connect these seven Eicher families or individuals into one family, although she probably assumed there were family relationships. Upon acquiring the sourcebook Montbeliard Mennonite Church Register 1750-1958, by Joe A. Springer, Goshen, Indiana, 2015, I found that the Eicher family outline shows that most of these Eichers who came to Canada in the 1800’s were indeed related to each other. After these seven Eicher families/individuals are listed, there will be a chart showing their common ancestry in brief form. Following the brief list will be an extended list of the Hans Eicher and Anna Schwarri family. BWJ] [1] The first Amish Mennonite Eichers in Canada were Frederick and Veronica Eicher. They appeared in the Wilmot census and assessment records from 1832 to 1837. No children were listed in their household; so they were probably a childless couple. The newspaper Canada Museum printed in Berlin (now Kitchener) carried the announcement of "Friedrich" Eicher's death on July 14, 1838, at the age of 65. The newspaper stated that he had been a "Lehrer" (literally teacher) in the Amish "Gemeinde" (Congregation) for 17 years. The funeral was held on July 16 with "Lehrer" Johannes Brenneman giving a fitting address and "Lehrer" Johannes Oesch preaching on the Word from James 1:12. (2) Historians of the Amish Mennonite community in Upper Canada have missed a few ordained persons, the first one of whom was Frederick Eicher. If Eicher was a minister for 17 years, we can assume that he was ordained in Europe, because he did not likely come to Canada much before 1832 when he first appeared in the census. Veronica Eicher (the first time she is named) appeared in the 1840 census. She had one cow and was assessed at three pounds. In the 1851 census, her age was 74 and she was living with John Boesiger, a widower. Both were born in France. 25. Frederick Eicher, son of Christian Eicher and Elizabeth Baumgartner b. June 1773, probably France

d. 14 Jul 1838, Wilmot Township, Canada Veronica (maiden name unknown), b. ca.1777, France d. after 1851, probably Wilmot Township Friedrich Eicher is known to have a brother Christian. His parents, Christian and Elizabeth (Baumgartner) Eicher lived at Hirsingue in 1789. They may have emigrated from La Havre to New York on the Ship Edward Quesnel, arriving on June 21, 1830 [2] The Eichers were next represented by the family of Marie Eicher, widow of Jean/John Boshart, who arrived in 1837 with her family in Upper Canada where her brother-in-law, Christian Boshart lived. Her parents were Jean/John Eicher and Anna Hostetler, and her grandparents were Hans Eicher and Anna Schwarri. Some details on this family will be found below. For a more complete story, see the BOSHART Family Genealogical Introduction. [3] In 1848, 19-year-old Martin Eicher received a passport in Alsace – destination Canada. (4) He was born in Pulversheim and was a resident of Walheim, but his presence in Canada has not been established. Martin was the son of Hans Eicher and Margaret Conrad, and a brother to Daniel and Jacob Eicher below. He must have changed his mind about Canada, for he applied for naturalization in Wayne County, Ohio in 1849. He married Barbara Roth, daughter of Jacob Roth and Anna Maria Miller. Martin is the son of Jacob Eicher and Anna Lugbull, and the great-grandson of Hans Eicher and Anna Schwarri, [4] A Daniel Eicher began to appear in the land records in 1848. He owned the west half of Lot 31, Concession XVI, East Zorra Township, Oxford County, from January to October, 1848. In 1850, Daniel Eicher witnessed the sale of the east half of Lot 35, Concession XIV, East Zorra, from Emile and Susanna Arthaud to John Master. Then he purchased 12 acres of Lot 12, Concession I in Block A., Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, selling them again in 1851. In the 1851 census, he appeared as a sawyer, age 28, with Abram Master at New Dundee, also in Wilmot. It is assumed these are all the same Daniel Eicher. Daniel Eicher was the son of Hans Eicher and Margaret Conrad, and the great-grandson of Hans Eicher and Anna Schwarri, which connects him to the rest of the Eichers in Upper Canada. Daniel left La Havre, France on the Ship “Argo” and arrived in New York on July 6, 1845. On the ship list he follows Jacob Liechty (age 25). An Eicher (first name not given) is mentioned in an 1846 letter from Coutenans, France, to Jacob Liechty, at Petersburg, Wilmot Township. After 6 years in Upper Canada, Daniel then returned to Europe, intending to bring his parents to the new world, but they chose to stay. He then appears on the same ship list, but on a different place on the list, as Magdalena Rich, who is with her widowed mother, Barbara Ramseyer Rich, and other of the Rich children. They arrived at New York on the ‘Switzerland’ on June 7, 1855. One source states that Daniel Eicher married Magdalena Rich on July 8, 1855, but another source says they married April 17, 1855, which would have placed the ceremony in Europe. Perhaps they had two ceremonies, one on either side of the ocean. Barbara Ramseyer Rich lived in Wayne County, Ohio for a short time, and then they relocated to Washington, County, Iowa, where Daniel’s wife died on April 17, 1856. Daniel Eicher remarried Magdalena Klopfenstein. [5] Catherine (Ropp) Eicher, widow of Pierre/Peter Eicher, was issued a passport on February 18, 1861. She was accompanied by five children, one of them married with one child. Pierre had died in Luemschwiller, Alsace, in 1851, being the son of Christian Eicher and Anna Rich, and the grandson of Hans Eicher and Anna Schwarri. Luemschwiller was also the place where the family lived when Catherine applied for a passport. Her family will be given in more detail in the following pages.

[6] Henry Eicher came to Canada with his mother, sister, and step-father, Joseph Ramseyer in the 1860s. Henry was the son of Jacob Eicher and Anne Marie Sommer. Jacob Eicher, the first of his siblings to emigrate, was the son of Hans Eicher and Margaret Conrad, and an older brother to Daniel and Martin, mentioned above. Therefore, Jacob was a great-grandson of Hans Eicher and Anna Schwarri. More details on Henry Eicher's family follow. [7] Joseph and Maria Eicher, ages 63 and 61, and two teenage children, Jacob, age 15 and Catherine, age 17, appeared in the 1881 Wilmot census record, but from whence they came and whither they went is also not known. We do not know how to connect this family to the rest of the Eichers who came to Upper Canada. NOTE: Joseph Peter Staker, compiler of Amish Mennonites in Tazewell County, Illinois, lists Christian Eicher (m. Catherine Ropp) as the son of Jacob Eicher and Maria Klopfenstein, and grandson of Jacob Eicher and Katharina Graber. Obviously further research is needed to correct this discrepancy.

In the spring of 1837, Marie Eicher Boshart, then a widow, took her family to Le Havre, France, and boarded the Ship Burgundy, landing in New York on April 20. In France it was customary for women to retain their maiden names; so when Marie was asked for her name, she gave it as Marie Eicherin (the "in" ending is the German feminine form). The scribe then made ditto marks for the children, calling them "Eicherin" also.(12)

Presumably, the family headed straight for Canada and Wilmot Township, arriving at the children's Uncle Christian's home in May. According to their naturalization records they arrived in Canada in May of 1838. One suspects this to be in error, although it is possible that they stayed in Pennsylvania for a year.

Peter Eicher was born at the farm aux Gouttes, on the edge of Montbeliard in the Department of Doubs, France. Montbeliard is located near the southwestern tip of Alsace. The marriage record of Peter Eicher and Catherine Ropp has not been found. It is assumed that their first child was Christian, born in 1833 on the Farm Windenhof and registered at Willer. These places are found southeast of Altkirch in the Department of Haut-Rhin, Upper Alsace. Six children were born on the Windenhof between 1833 and 1842. By 1851, Peter and Catherine were living in Luemschwiller, the birth place of Catherine, and the residence of several members of the Ropp family. Peter died in 1851 at the age of 47. Luemschwiller is found north east of Altkirch. When Catherine applied for a passport, she gave her destination as Canada "to rejoin her brother Joseph Ropp." Five of her children, and Peter Jr.'s wife and child, were also listed on the passport. Catherine and her family left Le Havre France on the Ship Helvetia and landed in New York on May 10, 1861. (7) Catherine and all of her children on the passport and passenger lists showed up in the records in Canada except Christian. According to family tradition, Christian Eicher, married to Adel/Adeline (Ruby) Miller, had also come to Canada. He married in Indiana, however, leaving no trace of himself in Canada. In Bishop John Jantzi's marriage record book we find the marriage of Catherine Eicher to Joseph "Spring" in 1868, and that of Joseph Eicher to Catherine "Spring" a year earlier. Since the Joseph Eicher family gives Catherine's name as "Springer," I am assuming that is the correct form of the name. The Springer young people were children of Andrew and Catherine Spring[er]. According to an Eicher genealogy, Catherine's maiden name was Haus. Their children were born in France. Both the Eicher and Springer young people were residents of Ellice Township, Perth County, at the time of their marriage. Both couples migrated to the United States. When Catherine and Joseph Springer left for the United States, and where they went is not known. In the late 1870s they were probably living in Daviess County, Indiana. Joseph died in 1878, and in the 1880 census Catherine was living with the Jacob Graber family in Barr Township. Since she was living with unrelated people, she probably did not have any children. After 1886, Catherine married Christian Lengacher, a widower. Catherine probably died in the 1890s in Daviess County. (8) Her place of burial is not known. Joseph and Catherine Eicher migrated to Missouri where their third son, Christian, was born in 1873. By 1880, they were in Allen County, Indiana. Joseph and Catherine died in Grabill, Indiana – Joseph in 1915 and Catherine in 1916. Their son, Christian Eicher, came to Canada and married Mary Steckly. He took her back to Indiana where their first son was born and died. Then they returned to Canada where the rest of their children were born. Any Eichers residing in Canada are descendants of this couple. Peter Eicher Jr. was married to Veronica Stocky/Stucky, and they had a 7-month-old daughter when the family left France. Five children were born to them in Canada, the last one in 1869. Peter and Veronica (known as Fannie) probably left for Illinois after son Peter's birth in 1869. They had 11 children, of whom 10 were still living at the time of Veronica's death in 1919. From the names found in the Church Record book in Canada and in daughter Anna (Eicher) Sauder's obituary, we have been able to name all of these children, but do not know much about them. Peter and Fannie are buried in the Mennonite Cemetery (also known as Railroad Cemetery), near Pekin, Illinois.

Maria Eicher, recorded as Anne Marie in her birth record, was the youngest living child of Peter and Catherine Eicher. She was 20 years old when the family migrated. In 1865, she married Michael Schrag from South Easthope Township. This marriage was recorded by Bishop Joseph Ruby. No doubt, Catherine (Ropp) Eicher, lived with her daughter Maria in East Zorra Township after her marriage.

Bishop Joseph Ruby recorded her name in his death record as "Catharina Rupp" – using her maiden name – as was the French custom. She died on February 13 and was buried on the 15th in the year 1866. She was buried in the 19th Line cemetery in East Zorra Township, Oxford County. Michael Schrag was a farmer as well as a cheesemaker at the Cassel Cheese factory in East Zorra. Maria and Michael Schrag were buried in the same cemetery as Maria's mother. FAMILY OF PETER EICHER AND CATHERINE ROPP

Peter and Veronica Eicher moved to Elm Grove, Illinois in 1867. According to Veronica's obituary in Gospel Herald (April 10, 1919), they had 11 children, 10 still living in 1919. The obituary gives the date of their migration to Illinois as 1865. With children born in Canada until 1869, that date is in error. Fannie's birth date, given as 1853, must also be incorrect.

Jacob Eicher, his wife Anne Marie (known as Mary) Sommer, and their son Henry migrated from Staffelfelden, Haut-Rhin, France, to Akron, Ohio, in 1847. (12) Jacob died there in June 1849, and Mary gave birth to their daughter Mary in September. Widow Mary married Joseph Ramseyer, an immigrant to Stark County, Ohio, and a widower with seven children. Another son was born in 1859.

At the time of the Civil War, Joseph and Mary moved to Canada with all of their children except Joseph's two oldest children who were probably already married. In 1866, they purchased Lot 19, North Bleam's Road from William Scott. This 200-acre lot already had two houses, as well as an additional dwelling on the east half. The same year, Joseph Ramseyer's son Michael, married Mary's daughter Mary Eicher.

In 1868, Henry Eicher married Maria Lichti, and in 1874, Joseph Ramseyer sold them the east half of the lot with the large stone mansion, built by William Scott in 1859 and the smaller house which had probably served as servants' quarters. Joseph still owned the west half, but it is not clear in which house the three different family units lived.

In 1873, Michael Ramseyer died at the age of 29, leaving Mary and six children -- another one unborn. According to family tradition Michael died in a tree-felling accident. According the civil death record he died of measles.

In 1877, Joseph Ramseyer and Henry Eicher both sold their portions of the Wilmot property and moved to Hay Township, taking their families, including Widow Mary (Eicher) Ramseyer and her children with them.

Henry did considerable land buying and selling in Hay. He first leased the north half of Lot 22, Concession XIV, from the Canada Company in 1876 and the south half in 1878, obtaining ownership to the south half in 1878 and the north half in 1881. By 1881 he had also acquired Lot 21 in the same concession.

Joseph Ramseyer had purchased Lot 26 and the south half of Lot 27, also in the 14th concession, selling part of the property to Mary Ramseyer (probably the widow of his son Michael) in 1883. Joseph Ramseyer died in the winter of 1890.

Henry Egly, an Amish-Mennonite minister of Adams County, Indiana, began a religious awakening movement which was first known as the "Egly Amish." He made various preaching tours to Amish Mennonite communities, throughout the United States. During the 1880s he found several families in Hay Township who were open to his preaching – among them the Ramseyers and the Eichers. His first recorded trip to Canada was in 1881. On his trip in 1885, Henry Eicher was baptized. In 1888 he made another trip and baptized several more persons. He also visited a few families in the New Hamburg area. In August 1889, Henry Egly and his wife visited Canada again and held communion, staying with Henry Eichers for the night. In February 1890, Henry Egly was called to come for the burial of Joseph Ramseyer, and he obliged, taking the train at 2 o'clock in the morning. (13)

According to the family story, the Ramseyer and Eicher men went to Elkton, Michigan, in the spring following Father Ramseyer's death, chose a few small acreages and set up some houses. The adult men returned to Canada, leaving the younger ones to take care of things. In 1891, Henry purchased his sister's property, but sold it again the following year. Henry is supposed to have gone to Michigan again in 1892 with Michael's and Joseph's widows joining the rest of the family in 1893. Henry Eicher did not sell his initial land purchases until 1903. Is the family tradition in error concerning the dates, or was Henry unable to sell his land in 1893, or did he keep it in case he wanted to come back again? In any case, the Eichers, the Ramseyers, including most of the Peter Ramseyer family from Wilmot Township, and several other Amish Mennonite families, including Gaschos and Herfords, settled in Michigan and became members of the Henry Egly group which had become known as the Defenceless Mennonite Church, now known as the Evangelical Mennonite Church. The church at Elkton, however, became part of what is now the Missionary Church. THE EICHER / SOMMER / RAMSEYER FAMILY Jacob Eicher, son of John L.
