LAWRENCE, Kan. — You think he’s a hero.
The rest of the Big 12 sees him as a villain.
You know a kid from a troubled childhood who became an inspiring story, a humble All-American, an ideal teammate and a friendly student wise beyond his 19 years.
Everyone else views Oklahoma State point guard Marcus Smart as a flopper, a whiner and a complainer.
They see an arrogant bully, an overrated athlete
and a disrespectful com-petitor.
Monday, he’ll enter Oklahoma’s Lloyd Noble Center as the most hated man in Norman.
But it’s nothing new. Smart’s dealt with it his entire life, and he’s handled it on a stage much larger than the Noble Center — Kansas’ Allen Fieldhouse.
In 2013, Smart forever
enraged the Jayhawk fan base by doing a backflip on James Naismith Court after OSU’s upset of No. 2 Kansas.
In a Jan. 20 loss in KU’s Phog, Smart met the consequences of a celebra-tion OSU fans viewed as innocent.
KU fans showered him with resounding boos upon his introduction. The treatment didn’t stop at
any point.“It’s one thing to beat
us at home, but to back flip on the home court is another thing,” KU sopho-more Austin Hershberger said. “I think he could have done it a little more classy.
“I think he’s going to be a good NBA player. But he does flop. That’s what they do in the NBA; maybe he’s just trying to get ready for that.”
In the early portion of OSU’s 2014 Big 12 road schedule, that treatment has quickly become rou-tine.
At Kansas State, Smart was welcomed with chants of “You’re a flopper!”
At West Virginia, fans mockingly screamed “Mar-cus! Mar-cus!”

SportsCowgirls fall to Baylor in overtime thriller
TYLER DRABEK/O’COLLEGIANKendra Suttles dives for a loose ball in No. 8 OSU’s 69-66 loss to No. 12 Baylor.
All-American Baylor point guard Odyssey Sims was off.
Her shot wasn’t fall-ing, and her scoring total was nowhere close to her 30-point average.
But with the clock wind-ing down in overtime, Sims
corralled a loose ball after OSU post Kendra Suttles airballed a deep 3-pointer, drove the length of the floor and connected on a layup while getting fouled.
The three-point play put the Bears up 69-66 with 3.8 seconds left and ended
up being the difference in Baylor’s win against Okla-homa State on Sunday in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
“This loss is tough, especially because we had great opportunities to win the game,” OSU guard Tiffany Bias said. “At the end of regulation, we had a chance, but it’s just the little things like making free throws and knocking down shots, so it’s a tough loss for us.”
Baylor (16-3, 6-1) took control from the opening tip. It won the first half and outplayed the Cowgirls (17-2, 6-2) for the majority of the contest, including a 16-point lead in the second half at the 15:11 mark, but then the comeback started.
Liz Donohoe found an open Roshunda Johnson, who knocked down a 3-pointer, trimming the lead to 13 and giving OSU momentum. Over the next seven minutes, the Cow-girls managed to tie the game and then take the lead.
“I thought (Roshunda)
played with great compo-sure for how young she is,” OSU coach Jim Littell said. “She continues to become a better practice player, and it seems like the bigger the game the more she shines.”
Baylor and OSU traded scoring possessions in the final five minutes, but Suttles’ layup put the Cow-girls ahead by three with 42 seconds left. Sims jacked up a three on the Bears’ next possession, and it clunked off the iron. Johnson gathered the rebound, but the ball was stolen by Niya Johnson.
Johnson then found Makenzie Robertson, who sunk a deep 3-pointer to tie the game with six seconds left.
“I thought Niya was going to shoot it honestly, but as soon I got the ball, I knew I needed to get it off,” Robertson said. “I wanted the ball; I wanted to shoot it, and I did.”
The game went to overtime after Bias failed to make a layup on the other end.
In overtime, Baylor outscored the Cowgirls 8-5 and sealed the win after OSU turned the ball over on its final posses-sion, leaving the Cowgirls winless against the Bears since 2010 and giving BU control of first place in the Big 12.
OSU had three players score in double-figures: Johnson, Suttles and Bias. The Bears’ Robertson led all scorers with 18 points. All-American Sims is averag-ing 30 points per game but scored only 17 and shot 26 percent from the field.

Smart: public opinion on marcus smart is not all positive.
From Page 1
“Everywhere we go, I feel like these crowds are having meetings on how to mess with Marcus,” OSU forward Brian Williams said.
Kansas simply raised the bar.
“I hate Marcus Smart,” KU junior Ryan Schlesener said. “A celebration was
well-deserved, but I don’t think what he did is what you do on an opposing team’s court.”
Maybe the hate outside of Kansas is because Smart has a tendency to fake get-ting fouled and is quickly developing a reputation for jawing with officials, even kicking a chair during a frustrating game against West Virginia.
Or maybe it’s simply part of being the defending Big 12 Player of the Year.
“If they are chanting your name, it goes with the territory,” OSU coach Travis Ford said. “That’s to be expected.”
And as much as oppos-ing fans despise Smart, teammates and coaches continue to publicly have his back.
“He takes a lot of punches,” Ford said. “I know everybody thinks he does this and he does that, but he is getting hit. I’ve watched tape. We all un-derstand everybody’s game

plan is to take him out.”Smart’s well aware of
his increasingly infamous reputation, but he hasn’t let it get to his head.
He’s averaging 17.1 points per game and is on the path to being an All-American for a second time.
“For the most part, I just get into a zone where I block it out and I can bare-ly hear it,” Smart said. “You can’t focus on that. You let it go. It’s going to happen. There’s nothing you can do; you can’t control it.”
You might think he’s a saint. Or you might believe he’s the devil. Either way, it’s a matter of opinion.
But take this as fact — Marcus Smart doesn’t care what anyone thinks.
“I’ve dealt with it my whole life,” Smart said. “People are going to think what they’re going to think, but I know what I can do.”
