DID YOU KNOW THE EASTER SEASON IS 50 DAYS LONG? The season of Easter is a time of unbridled joy, of exuberant rejoicing. The Church tells us: “The 50 days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better as one great Sunday. These above all others are days for the singing of the Alleluia.” That is why we as a parish celebrate with joy the Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist of our Catechumens on Holy Saturday. Joining them are those already baptized in another Christian tradition that make a Profession of Faith in the Catholic community. Throughout this holy season, we are blessed with new life with Baptisms, Confirmations and First Communions. These Easter Sacraments invite us all to rejoice, and renew our own commitment in faith each day to the profound presence of God. Let us celebrate that new life through these 50 days, especially with those whose special occasions remind us of our first sacramental moments and who look to us as support and encouragement to live fully this Easter joy every day of our lives!

FAITH FORMATION

WHAT IS THE CHURCH SAYING ABOUT ANNULMENTS? Many Catholics and some Gesu parishioners who have undergone a civil divorce may believe that they are no longer “in communion” with the Church, and either avoid taking part in Mass, or attend Mass without receiving the Eucharist. It is attempting re-marriage outside of the church after a divorce that is the stumbling block to being in communion with the Catholic Church. Divorce alone is not a mortal sin, since at times divorce might be necessary for one’s personal happiness, physical or emotional safety. Annulments are certainly not a “Catholic Divorce.” So, what are they? Who needs one? What does an annulment mean, and how might one be obtained? Join Fr. Vincent on Sunday, May 6 at 11:15 am in the Sacred Heart Room for answers to these questions.

IGNATIAN THREADS Are you savoring the graces of this Easter season? Do you embrace the Risen Jesus with deep love and gratitude for all that has impacted our lives because of his life, death and Resurrection? In today’s Gospel, we encounter Jesus, the good shepherd who loves us and cares for us more than we can fathom. He says “I will lay down my life for the sheep,” and this is just what he did! Ignatian spirituality inspires us to recognize God’s presence in our lives. The graces of these Paschal mysteries inspire tremendous gratitude for the renewal constantly at work within us. With prayer and practice, let us learn how to use our ears to hear and eyes to see what will lead us to a deeper relationship with our Risen Lord. We listen with our hearts and follow the Shepherd.

FIRST COMMUNION 2018 Join in our parish celebrations of First Communion at the following liturgies: • Saturdays at 4:30 pm: April 21 & 28 • Sundays at 8:00, 10:00 & 11:30 am: April 22 & 29 Eucharist is one of the three sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church. As with Baptism, the preferred way of celebrating First Communion is in the context of regular church liturgies. Sacraments benefit the entire parish com-munity. Our parish First Communion celebrations allow our children to remind us of the beauty of this sacrament. They also demonstrate the importance of the family. At Gesu, the children sit with their families, and at communion time, they receive the body and blood of Jesus alongside their parents. This reminds us of the importance of family as the primary place for teaching children in the ways of our faith. We hope you are able to join us for these very special celebrations. Our parish community will be richer with your participation, and our children will be touched by your presence!

FUNERAL PLANNING GUIDE Find the new Funeral Planning Guide on the home page of the parish website, listed under Gesu at a Glance. Many have asked us for a resource like this! You will see parish information, readings, music suggestions, and guidelines for planning the funeral itself. If you have any questions, please call the parish office.

BIBLE STUDY The study “Introduction to the Bible” meets Saturdays from 12:00-2:00 pm in the Sacred Heart Room through May 19 . Join us for prayer, personal study and reflection and small-group sharing. This study opens the Bible for newcomers and experienced Bible students alike. Email Christie Okocha at [email protected] if you are interested. A set of two books is available in the parish office for $16.

MASS INTENTIONS The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for loved ones, living or deceased, is a beautiful and wonderful part of our Catholic tradition. At Gesu, there are many requests for scheduling such Mass intentions. As a way to allow as many parishioners and friends as possible to schedule Masses, the following guidelines are put forth to help accomplish this goal.

Guidelines • Only one Mass per month may be requested for the same intention (person). • Specific dates cannot be reserved in advance for future years. Dates can only be arranged when the Mass book opens for the following year. • The offering is $10 per Mass. This is accepted at the time you arrange a specific intention and not in advance. • Masses can be said at Gesu, Honduras or Colombiere, the Jesuit Retirement Community The Mass Intention book will open in mid-April for 2019. If you would like a Mass said please come to the parish office during regular office hours and we’d be happy to assist you.

A PRAYER FOR OUR EARTH All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universeand in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are pro-foundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace.

ADAPTIVE NEEDS MINISTRY The Adaptive Needs Ministry reaches out to parishioners of all ages with special physical or mental needs as well as their family members. We aim to create a more welcoming environment for all God’s special children in His house. We offer support and encouragement for families with special needs members. We will use this logo, uniting a wheelchair, supported by Gesu, to represent our ministry in the bulletin and throughout the Gesu community. Email Angela Young at [email protected] for more information.

DID YOU KNOW? We do have a wheelchair available in church for anyone who may need it while here at Mass. It is located in the “bride’s room.” Simply ask an usher for any assistance.

UPDATED FINANCIAL REPORTS Gesu Parish is pleased to provide an updated Parish financial report. The new report includes the amounts collected for Sunday Offertory and Holy Days each month rather than weekly. It includes monthly and year-to-date totals plus monthly and year-to-date budget numbers. The variance will show if collections are ahead of, or behind, what was budgeted for the time period. Additionally, the report will include the Honduras Mission, Food Fund, Corporal Works of Mercy and The Fund for Gesu, as well as the Diocese of Cleveland special collections. The reporting is a more accurate and timely picture of Gesu’s financial position. We are grateful for your generosity to Gesu and hope you will continue to support our mission!
