We have also had some concerns raised by parents about nits. We do know that about 5% of children, across the

country, will have nits at any given time. Schools used to send out letters every time there was a case but the NHS

and school nursing services do not recommend this any longer as schools would be sending out letters every day

and these quickly lose impact if they are regularly sent out. If we see live lice in a child’s hair, we will talk to parents

to ask them to treat their child as a matter of urgency. We also ask all parents to send children with long hair to

school with their hair tied up as this makes a big difference in preventing the spread of nits. If you have concerns

about nits or are having trouble getting rid of them, please speak to your child’s class teacher to make them aware of

the problem so they can keep an eye for any cases and ensure hair is tied up. Also collect an information leaflet from

the office or download from the Parent section of our website.

Remember you do not need to pay for treatments – just go to a pharmacy that is part of the minor ailments service

and they will be able to provide free treatment. For more details, go to

Dear Parents,

I would like to start this week by letting you know some fantastic news! As you know we were recently a part of the Tesco

Bags of Help scheme to raise funds for our Forest School Project. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help

initiative across England and Wales. The scheme sees three community groups and projects in each of around 200 Tesco

regions awarded grants of £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge.

Customers get to vote for their favourite project every time they shop to determine the grant size each community project

I am delighted to say that Winton received the most votes locally and will receive a grant of £5000! Huge thanks to Miss

Weston, our Outdoor Learning Lead, for putting the bid together. The money will help us resource and improve our outdoor

provision, ensuring that all children get to benefit from an enhanced curriculum that utilises our outdoor space. Our vision has

always been to grow food outside, cook it outside and to use our outside space to offer children opportunities to learn and

experience new skills. This money will make a huge difference to our plans and we hope you will see the improvements as we

make them over the coming months. More to follow from Miss Weston in the coming weeks but for now a huge thanks to

everyone who voted and encouraged others to vote in the scheme – thanks for your support!

Please could I also ask for your support in a couple of other ways? We are seeing a large number of children arriving at school

early and it is important that parents remember that staff are not on duty until 8.40am. We are happy to take responsibility

for the children from 8.40-8.50am and provide a drop off window of 10 minutes. We cannot be responsible for children prior

to this time and any children on the playground before 8.40am are unsupervised. At the end of the day children in Reception,

Years 1 and 2 finish when the bell goes at 3.15pm and the older children finish at 3.20pm.

PFA news

We are planning to hold an Easter Egg Tombola on Thursday 6th April after school. We hope to have tombolas

set up in as many year groups as possible and we’re looking for parent volunteers to staff the stalls. If you are

willing to help sell tombola tickets after school on 6th April, in one of the year groups, please contact us via our

Facebook Page or by email on pfa@wintonprimary.bournemouth.sch.uk to sign up. The success of such events

depends on volunteers and we only need a small amount of your time for this event!

The children will be allowed to wear mufti (no school uniform) on Friday 31st March in return for

bringing an Easter Egg or chocolate donation. Please add this day to your diary! On the morning of the

31st March we will be in school creating the tombola with the children’s donations. If you are free to help us set

up the tombola and stick raffle tickets on chocolate etc. on this morning, then please contact us (as above), as

we need 3 volunteers from each year group.

Clubs will finish at the end of

the week commencing Monday

Lunchtime activities

Once again thank you so much for all the lovely

equipment that has come into school this week to

help support our lunchtime activities.

We do not need any more board games at the current

time but we are still in need of craft resources, loom

bands and any outside games equipment such as

skittles sets, Velcro bats sets, hoola hoops, space

hoppers… Please bring them to the main office for

the attention of Mrs Lidster.

make our lunchtimes amazing for all our children.

NEWS Bournemouth in Bloom are coming to Winton

Primary in the Summer! One of the categories we

have entered is a themed planter and the theme this

year is 'the seaside'. We would love to see your ideas

about what this planter could look like - the winning

design will be chosen as our competition entry!

Please get designing and hand your entries to the

school office no later than Monday 3rd April.

On Friday 7th April we have our whole school Fun Run

at Redhill Common. This is always a fantastic

community event that encompasses the team work

and camaraderie important to achieving success in all

walks of life. The PE team would like to ask for as

many parents as possible to volunteer to marshal the

course on the day. This would enable you to watch

the event itself (as unfortunately there is not enough

space to invite spectators to watch the run) and be

involved in making the day one to remember. If you

are interested in helping, then please see the office

or approach Mr Millar or Mr Burt directly. We would

really appreciate your help.

Children may come to school in non-uniform and

wearing wellies for their visit to Honeybrook Farm.

We visited at the weekend and it was very muddy!

Please send your child in clothes suitable for a farm

visit, and also for the weather conditions that are

forecast. Waterproof coats may be necessary! If you

have ordered a hot lunch for your child on trip day

they will be provided with a cold, packed lunch. All

other children will need to bring a packed lunch as

usual to school.

Also a reminder for Cherry Class assembly on

Tuesday 28th March at 2:50pm. The assembly

will be in the small hall. Please enter through the

middle gate, just as we did for the parent emergency

vehicle workshop.

Coming Soon!

Over the coming weeks, we will be introducing an exciting

new service called Xpressions. This is an app which you can

download to your mobile devices and it will enable the school

to communicate with you instantly and give you the ability to

respond to us straightaway.

Alongside this, we will be moving away from sending home

paper copies of the newsletter and other letters and we will

email them to you instead. Not only will this drastically reduce

the amount of paper we use as a school, it will also benefit

the environment! There will be lots more information in the

coming weeks, so please keep a close eye on the newsletter

to ensure you don’t miss out!

Year 1

This week in Year 1 they have been focussing on making capital letters larger than lower

case letters and not joining them to other letters in their words. Through learning their new

text, ‘How to make paper dolls’ they have been looking at the features of instruction writing

such as imperative (bossy) verbs e.g. put, cut, stick etc.

In maths they have been learning how to find ½ of a shape by folding it. Once

they had learnt that one half is one whole split into two equal parts they used

this to find halves of quantities e.g. ‘half of 10 is 5’. Next week they will be

learning that one quarter is one whole split between four equal parts.

Reminder – Next week Year 1 will be walking to Winton library on

Thursday 30th March 2017. Please make sure that your child has a raincoat on this day. The children’s work

is now on display in Bournemouth and Winton libraries.

Year 2

This week Year 2 have been innovating their story ‘The Snail and the Whale’. This is

where they have used the story structure and replaced the main characters and ideas

with characters and ideas of their own. In maths they have been continuing to learn

about time and solve problems involving time.

Year 2 enjoyed their trip to the library. Every

child that went chose a book that they would like

to read. The librarians put this book aside for

them to come and pick up with their parents when they were able to visit, so

if you haven’t already been back to the library, there’s a book there waiting

for your child!

Year 3

Thank you to all our Year 3 parents, carers, grandparents and friends who came to support our land yacht race

on Monday afternoon. We all had a wonderful afternoon and it was so great to see the fantastic teamwork and

creativity. As well as designing amazing land yachts, the social and emotional skills of talking through and

sharing ideas; perhaps even compromising on some, were vital ingredients to a very successful afternoon. Well

done to everyone!

In maths Year 3 will be continuing to develop their time telling skills; please practice at home telling the time

together in both analogue and digital formats. It is an important life skill so please practice as much as possible.

Next week 3DC and 3SB will be making Easter biscuits on Monday and selling them after school on Tuesday

28th March outside Year 3. They will be 50p a bag and the money will go towards having some animal experts

coming into school in the summer term. The children have also worked really hard this week sawing wood and

making coasters with Miss Weston. These will also be on sale after school on Tuesday and are 50p each. 3LB and

3LJ will be making and selling biscuits the following week.

We are now starting to think about and plan our involvement in the annual Winton Carnival which Year 3 have

been participating in. Last year was such a fabulous success and this year we want to be even bigger and better

so we really need your help!

Winton Carnival will be on Saturday June 24th and Year 3 will be in the parade in the morning. We would like

every child in Year 3 to be involved so that they can experience being in a parade and also for you to come along

and be in the parade too, as members of our school community.

have a commercial vehicle that we could borrow for the parade or you

know of someone with one who could help us, please see Mrs. Lidster as

Year 4

In Year 4 next week the children will be investigating integer scaling problems in Maths. Have a go practising at

home as this will really support your child’s class learning. Please see your child’s class teacher if you require

any support or information about this concept.

Integer scaling

Word problems involving scaling quantities up or down.

For example:

“I have a recipe that makes 12 cakes using 200g of flour”,

“How much flour is needed to make 6 cakes?”

“How much flour is needed to make 24 cakes?”

In English Year 4 will also be starting their new writing topic on 'Biographies'. This will link to their Victorian

topic and the children will have the opportunities to create their own biography videos based on Victorian

inventors. You may want to have a go researching Victorian inventors at home together as they had a major

influence on the technology that we have today.

On Wednesday Year 3 and 4 were very lucky to be able to go on very exciting trips through the Borneo rainforest

and to the seven wonders of the world with the Google Team Expedition. They were able to use the special

Google glasses to go on some truly amazing journeys; make sure you ask your children all about it!

Year 5

Next week, the children in Year 5 will be exploring the Easter story and considering

Christian traditions at this time of year. In English, the children will look at a picture

book called, 'FArTHER'. Through this story they will discuss emotions and relationships

and the impact of World War 2.

In maths, the children will revise their knowledge of negative numbers and become more

confident with using factors and multiples within problem solving tasks. Next week

should have been a 5AS and 5SH week for tennis, however, it has been

postponed due to teacher commitments so the next time they will be going to tennis is Thursday 6th

April.

Year 6

Taking a break from the hard work in Year 6 this week, the children took a short trip

to space then to the 7 Wonders of the World, followed by a journey through the

circulatory system and finishing with a trip back to see the dinosaurs. No, they didn't

all drift off to sleep during a long division lesson, the children were visited by Google

and used their new virtual reality headsets to go on some incredible expeditions! The

Year 6 teachers also took a short trip to a few book shops (this was real - not a Google

expedition) to spend a £100 gift card on some new and exciting books based on the children's input of authors

and styles of books they like. These will be presented to the children next week.
