To encourage research on alternative energy and update the academe
on the needs of government and society, Department of Energy (DOE)
Undersecretary Jose Layug Jr. recently delivered a lecture on campus about
renewable energy in the country.
Layug reported that the country has become a pioneer of renewable energy
in Asia, with close to 38 percent of its total energy requirements coming
from alternative sources. With the Philippines currently the second largest
producer of geothermal energy, next to the US, it has dominated the
country’s renewable energy portfolio.
Layug presented government efforts that support production and use
of alternative energy. The DOE campaign “BIGSHOW” (for Biomass, Geothermal,
Solar, Hydropower, Ocean, and Wind energy), was launched to encourage the use of
and investment to renewable energy.
The country has created fiscal incentives for biofuel investors and supported research
on alternatives to sugarcane, which is used to produce bioethanol.
The challenge for the country is to continue to find ways to increase the production of renewable
energy to avoid overreliance on energy resources that the country does not have.
Counseling and Educational Psychology Department Vice Chair Dr. Nino Jose
Mateo ranked number one in the recently concluded Licensure Examination for Guidance Counselors.
Only 185 out of 336 of examinees, or 55 percent, passed the test. Meanwhile, DLSU posted a 75
percent passing rate with nine board passers out of 12 examinees.
Jose is also the coordinator of the University’s Personal Effectiveness Foundation (PERSEF) and
Operation Big Brother (OBB) programs.New DLSP President

He also underscored the need to promote the values of Faith,
Service, and Communion in Mission, in the pursuit of the
University’s vision-mission to be a leading learner-centered
research university, bridging faith and scholarship in the service
of society, especially the poor.
Br. Ricky’s leadership experience includes a stint as Interim
President of then-De La Salle Canlubang in 2006. He also served
as President of the Jaime Hilario Integrated School-La Salleht in
Bataan and De La Salle Araneta University in 2007. From 2011
to 2012, he served as President of De La Salle Philippines.
As a member institution of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU), De La Salle
University through President and Chancellor Br. Ricardo Laguda
FSC attended the 24th General Assembly of the international
organization last July 23-27 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
With the theme, “Teaching and Learning in a Catholic University–
Educate and Train,” the conference focused on teaching and
learning as immediate tasks of Catholic institutions. In particular,
it tackled training, personal changes, and the transformation of
society as goals.
Through roundtable discussions and workshops, the assembly
was able to offer its participants a new perspective on diverse
ideas and the chance to define a joint and universal agenda
for actions that enable Catholic universities to take a proactive
position in today’s society.
Formally established in 1965, IFCU is currently made up of some
200 Catholic universities and institutions of higher learning. Aside
from De La Salle University and the other La Salle schools in the
Philippines, IFCU Philippine members include Ateneo de Manila
University, University of Santo Tomas, and St. Scholastica’s
College, among others.
