Willow Hill ApartmentsNarrative

The Laurels of Willow Hill Apartments is one of two complexes located at Willow Hill Apartments in Justice, IL. The beautifully landscaped grounds surround the property providing residents with a wonderful living environment. As an Activities Specialist, I have the honor of providing residents with recreational events that enhance their development and compliment their living experience here at Willow Hills.

We began our 2013 year with “Staying Connected” meetings, established to introduce the new staff and “stay connected” to our residents,. These meetings provided every resident the opportunity to meet the staff and discuss ways we could enhance our community together. We regularly provide an open gym where our youth and adults can play basketball, volleyball, or use the gym to exercise.

Narrative con’t

To help residents maintain a healthy lifestyle and get fit before summer, we offered flu shots and arranged group fitness classes for youth, adults, and seniors; the instructor offered one-on-one personal training sessions as well. First American Bank presented their “Money Island” Bank Account to our youth.

We hosted a job fair, a health fair, and have partnered with our community to offer energy assistance (help with light and gas bills), free cell phones, and complimentary self-defense classes; we had a resident volunteer to mentor another resident with his ACT, and one of youth who was getting an “F” in math; we will provide these opportunities continuously throughout the year.

There are monthly activities such as Line Dancing, Girl Scouts, I’m a Lady (program to help young girls develop into young ladies), and bible study, to name a few.

We are currently planning a swim program where our residents can take swim lessons, lifeguard lessons, aquatic programs like Baby & Me, water aerobics and fitness, and aquatic management.

Our Resident Appreciation week is scheduled for August 12-17th. This week we are planning lots of fun: coffee and donuts for those early risers who need a boost before they leave for work; an ice cream social where our own ice cream truck (okay, we’ll it’s really our golf carts) will ride through the community offering ice cream; a raffle giveaway; along with a culmination of activities on Saturday - back to school immunizations and giveaways, a Community yard sale, and a BBQ. Our fire and police department may pay a visit and

Upcoming programs coming this fall are Boy Scouts, a Community Garden (we actually have a chef on site who will help spearhead this - (food word here!), a Reading Program (for youth and adults), and a College Fair.

We are also considering the following programs before the end of the year: Zumba, Mentors, a book club, a computer lab, Let’s Move (Michelle Obama inspired program), and are looking into getting a Red Box on site.

My Favorite Activities

Felicia Owens, Activities SpecialistHello. I joined Willow Hill Apartments in November 2012., with a mission to rebrand the image of Willow Hill by partnering with neighboring communities to encourage onsite events. I have provided the residents with various programs to enhance their development and enlighten their spirits.

2012 Holiday PartyMy initial kickoff was the Christmas holiday celebration. Santa, his reindeer and a few elves stopped by to celebrate with us. The Mayor of Justice along with Village Trustee Melanie Kuban dropped in. Our Willow Hill family packed the place out and we also had the youth dance group “Watch

My Feet” show us a few of their dance moves. Overall, it was a great start to a new year!

Health FairIn May we had our first annual health fair. Walgreen’s provided blood pressure screenings, Chro One provided spinal screenings, we had a chiropractor on site and Shaklee products. Since I am passionate about health, I even made “green smoothies” and we had a raffle with some good giveaways.

We started out with monthly newsletters at the beginning of the year and switched to quarterly as a way to reduce costs and “go green”. The residents have the option of receiving the newsletters electronically.
