Machine, R.K.)

This is a thoroughly modern type of Panel Planingmachine embodying many new labour-savingfeatures, and designed throughout on the mostrobust Jines to produce a superfine finish on hardor soft timbers. It is a high-speed machine withfour-knife circular block running at 4,000 t.p.m.,and with a maximum feed speed of 100 feet perminute. The machine is compact, the drives beingbuilt into the main frame without sacrificing accessibility. Maintenance is simplified by the clean,

unbroken lines of the machine. All drivingmechanism is enclosed, and the inside of the mainframe is entirely covered in to prevent the accumulation of chips and dirt.

The machine is built with sectional chiphrcakcr andsectional feed roll, but solid chipbreaker andfeed roll can be supplied if preferred. Either chipdeflector, as shown below, or dust hood, as shownon page 3, can be provided as required.

The TableThe table is a casting of hard dose-grained metal, precision ground on the face. A feature of thedesign is the depth of the table and the length ofthe table slides, which make the table rigid underheavy cutS and eliminate vibration. It is raised andlowered 9- by means of screws operated by chainand conveniently placed handwheel. Anti-frictionball thrust washers take the weight of the table andpermit quick and easy rise and fall motion. Allmechanism is protected from harmful dust andchips. Scale registers exact thickness being planed.A four-point lock is fitted to the table, controlledby a hand lever.

Table rollers are arranged with a small vcnicaladjustment, operated by a handwheel. Thisenables the rollers to be quickly set in relation to

the table surface to suit the condition of the timber. The rollers arc mounted on ball bearing~, andextend the full width of the table.

Power feed rollers are of steel and arc ,,- diameterto ensure a powerful and steady control of thetimber. The in-feed roller is normally sectionaland is fluted. The feeding out roUer is smooth. To special order infced roller may be a plain orsolid type. The sections of the infced roller are3" wide and made of forged steel. Each section iscontrolled by 12 coil springs which allow for altl" variation in the thickness of the material. Thefeed roller pressures are controlled by adjustablesprings, totally enclosed, yet easily adjustable onthe top feed covers.

Chipbreaker stQil/gs back for access to clltlcrblocll.

The CutterblockThe cutterblock is of the four-knife safety circulartype. It is made from a special qualily steel of hightensile strength and is mounted in extra heavy ballbearings enclosed in dust-proof housings. Theknives are held in the block by tapered clamps anda unique fearure of the block is the provision ofscrew adjustmem for setting the kni\'es.

The ehipbrcakcr in from of the cutterblock is of thesectional type and consists of malleable iron shoesrwide, indepcndently spring-load,ed. A refinememof the design is rhat an initial lift is given to thechipbreaker from a pivOling point iI/ from of the

5

l:uuerblock. This not only keeps the gap betwccnthe shoes and the eutterblock dose, an essentialfor good work, but it gives a light easy lift usefulwhen planing thin boards, because only the shoesof the chipbrcaker unit arc lifted. A furtherimportant point is that due to the fact that theinitial lift is radially in the same direction as thefeed, it completely eliminates any possibility oftimber jamming under the chipbrcaker.

As shown by the illustration above the chipbreakercan be swung back, giving easy access to thecutterblock.

Built-in Grinder, Setter and Jointer

One of the most useful features of themachine is the provision made for regrindingthe four planer knives without removingthem from the block and for jointing them. The ease and convenience with which thiscan be done, encourages the operator to keephis knives sharp with the result that a consistently high standard of planing is obtainedfrom the machine. It is quite practical togrind the knives six or eight times withoutresetting them.A unique feature of the machine is theeccentric pressure rear bar adjusting leverwhich enables the rear pressure bar to beset quickly to compensate for reduced cuttingcircle after regrinds.

The standard of accuracy obtained by grinding the knives in the block is far better thanthe usual knife setting operation, and werecommend that new knives be ground imme~

diately after they arc set up in the block. Thehigh standard of accuracy is reflected in thefact that only a very slight heel is producedwhen the joimer is used which is a mostimportant factor in ensuring good finish athigh feed speeds.

The grinding unit is permanently mountedon a slide attached to the machine and isswung dear when not in use. In addition tothe grinding spindle it incorporates a jointingstone and setting wheel. There is nothing [Q

attach or detach and the entire unit is simple, efficient and accurate.

The grinding unit is powered by a ~ h.p.motor running 2,800 r.p.m., carrying a 2"diameter cup wheel on a !" diameter arbor. Each knife is located in relation to the grinding wheel by a finger device built into the

machine. This makes contact with the back of theknife. and ensures a clearance or back angle beingground of 30~. Adjustment is provided to obtaindifferent back angles. The grinding is accomplishedby travelling the grinding wheel along the knife, bymeans of a rapid feed screw and handle.

Each knife is brought into position by means of adetachable handle which fits on a squared shank onthe end of the cutterblock spindle.

Downfeed to the grinding wheel is by fine screwand handwheel.

The DriveThe drive is by one motor, housed inside the mainframe when standard alternating current supply isavailable. The dri,..e to the culterblock is by endlessvee belts. The drive to the feed mechanism isobtained by a t.....o-speed cone built on to the motor

pulley. and a \'cc belt driving a corresponding (wospeed pulley on a gearbox. incorporating a reduction gcar. This drive gives six rates of feed, from20 to 100 feet per minute. All the change gearsrun in oil and arc of special nickel chrome steelheat-trcated to 100 tons per square inch in tensileto give long life. The bearings in the gearbox arcball bearing self-oiling, thus the only attentionwhich the gearbox requires is the maintaining ofthe oil level to the sight indicator provided.

The drive to the feed rollers is by heavy bushedroller chain, giving a steady and positive drive. Asthe feed motion is taken from the cunerblockmotor, it is impossible to run the feed mechanismwhen the cutterbloek is stopped. The feed can bestopped while the cutterblock is running. Animportant feature of the drive is that it is totallyenclosed in the side frame. ensuring safety inoperation and full protection from chips and dust.

For single-phase and direct current, the motor ismounted on slide rails at the side of the machine. The drive from the motor is by vee belts.

Control GearFor three~phase alternating current the standardcontrol gear is of the automatic contactor type, operated by push buttons. The contaetor gearembodies full protective features and is built intoa dusHight recess in the main frame. The gear is

carried on the hinged door of the recess for eon~
