A Memorial Day Proclamation Prayer for Peace, Memorial Day

Since war is the world’s most terrible scourge, we should do all in our power to prevent its recurrence.

It was the hope of mankind that with the cessation of hostilities of World War II the way would be open to founding a permanent peace. Instead, that war has left the world in a state of continued unrest. Accordingly, we feel the need of turning in humble suppliance to Almighty God for help and guidance.

In recognition of this need, the Congress has fittingly provided, in a joint resolution which I approved on May 11, 1950, that Memorial Day, which has long been set aside for paying tribute to those who lost their lives in war, shall henceforth be dedicated also as a day for Nation-wide prayer for permanent peace. The Congress has also requested that the President issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe Memorial Day in that manner.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, HARRY S. TRUMAN, President of the United States of America, pursuant to the aforementioned resolution, do hereby proclaim Memorial Day, Tuesday, May 30, 1950, and each succeeding Memorial Day, as a day of prayer for permanent peace. And I designate the hour beginning at eleven o’clock in the morning of that day, Eastern Daylight Saving Time, as a period in which all our people may unite in prayer, each in accordance with his own religious faith, for divine aid in bringing enduring peace to a troubled world. HARRY S. TRUMAN, President of the United States

On this Memorial Day, I am thankful for the sacrifice so many throughout our history have made, for the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice and for their families who had to carry on without them. It is a sacrifice that is easy to forget. For those who have it, freedom is like oxygen. It’s something we just have. Many will not understand just how precious either is until they are at risk of it being taken away. There are encroachments being made on our free-doms right now by those who think they know better. This is a conversation for another time. Today I remember a sacrifice made and a debt I cannot repay. Today I pray for the God of heaven to bless the families of those who have lost loved ones while serving our great nation. I pray for Him to bless and comfort the walking wounded who are still with us, and bless their families as well. It is also my prayer that we remember their sacrifice and the precious gift of freedom every day, not just once a year or when they are in danger of being taken away. Congratulations to the Ladies of Charity! Catholic Charities and the Most Reverend David A. Zubik are proud to present this year’s “Living Spirit Award” to the Ladies of Charity of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The Ladies of Charity is a federation of Catholic women that serve people, especially the poor, assuring that works of charity are carried on according to the directives of their founder, Saint Vincent de Paul, and in the

spirit of Saint Louise de Marillac and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. The Diocese of Pittsburgh Ladies of Charity is composed of women from 77 parishes giving them an active membership of over 1,400. We are proud that we have Ladies of Charity in Saint Raphael Parish and Sacred Heart Parish. The Ladies of Charity at Saint Raphael have an exceptionally long, r ich tradition of reaching out, especially to the poor but also the elderly and homebound. This is mainly due to the leadership of the beloved Sister Jane Fadgen. As we congratulate the Ladies of Charity, we lovingly honor the memory of Sister Jane.

ADORATION

Following the Reopening Guide by Bishop David Zubik, we are happy to tell you that Tuesday, May 26, from 12 noon until 7 PM, both churches will be open for Adoration, using social distancing, wearing masks, and complying with the Guidelines. Six different people will be allowed in each church for a 30-minute adoration. If you want to stay for

an hour, sign up for two slots! If you are planning to come, you need to sign up using the form listed below. You will not be allowed in the church if you have not pre-registered. If you cannot sign up online for whatever reason, please contact J.R. Daniels at 412-661-0187, ext. 226 so that he can sign you up. Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. Thank you! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040A4AA4AA2CA2FD0-adoration

Congratulations, Father Joe Sioli

We want to congratulate Father Joe Sioli, a beloved former pastor of Saint Raphael Par-ish, who was appointed this past week by Bishop Zubik as one of the new regional vicars. Formerly, there were four Vicariates in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. With the continued un-folding of the On Mission for the Church Alive! initiative, there is no longer a need for four Vicariates. Given that next week, Bishop Zubik will be announcing 15 new parishes born out of 61 current parishes, the Diocese will move to two Vicariates. The South Vicariate will be served by Father Joe Sioli, who will be of assistance to all the faithful in the southern part of our Diocese. Please keep Father Sioli in your prayers as he assumes this huge responsibility.

The Reopening of Our Churches

It is with great joy that we look forward to opening our churches for private prayer and devotion. As stated elsewhere in the bulletin, the first day of opening our churches, May 26, will begin with Eucharistic Adora-tion. As you may know, every parish was asked to establish a COVID-19 Safety Team. The following parish-ioners and staff members agreed to serve on this important committee:

Dr. Frank Bontempo Greg Caridi Katrina Carr Cheryl Cuglewski Ann Donahue Deacon Bill Hahn Deacon John Vaskov

After consulting this committee, our churches will be open for private prayer and devotion on May 27 from 9:30 AM — 7:00 PM. Although we are excited and happy about being able to return to church, we also recognize we must do so with great precaution. Keeping ourselves safe from the Coronavirus and looking after the safety of others is not only the right thing to do but an act of charity in itself. As Catholics, we must be pro-life in all respects. In light of the reopening of our church doors, we wish to state the following procedures: Because each per-son’s requirement for comfort and safety is different, we are asking that you exercise personal responsibility for your own space when visiting either of our churches for individual, private devotion during the course of the day. Since we will not be able to constantly monitor the comings and goings of each person, and because we will have no way of knowing if someone else was in a particular space in the church before your arrival, please bring your own sanitary wipes, gloves, mask, and sanitizer, etc. to clean your prayer space and/or to meet your own specific safety and comfort needs. In keeping with the CDC guidelines, please be sure that you maintain a minimum of six feet between you and any other person in the church, and kindly adhere to the lim-it of no more than 25 people in any room at any given time In both of our churches, we will mark the pews with red tape indicating specifically where you may sit/kneel and still maintain the required social-distancing. Until further notice, the restrooms in our churches will not be available for use. During this transition time, we are going to have to rely, heavily, on the cooperation of all people visiting our two churches to keep everyone healthy and safe. Please do not come into our buildings if you have a fever or are not feeling well in a way that may endanger another person. Please respect any barriers that are set up in our churches to designate “off-limits” areas as they are only being established for your safety. Finally, if you are asked by any parish staff person to move, to wait, or to move to a designated spot, we ask that you cooper-ate fully as he/she is only asking out of concern for your own protection. To summarize again:

Personal responsibility for your space during silent devotional periods (bring sanitizing wipes, hand-sanitizer, gloves, etc. to suit your individual needs)

All CDC requirements – max group size of 25 individuals, 6ft between individuals, wearing of masks - need to be maintained for both private devotion AND scheduled group gatherings (daily masses, funerals, etc.)

Sit/kneel ONLY at specifically marked spaces

Restrooms will not be usable

We must rely on the cooperation and good will of all who visit the church

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR PSP CAMPAIGN

WE NEED YOUR HELP MORE THAN EVER!

The goals for the 2020 PSP Campaign are:

Sacred Heart Parish: $102,268.00 Saint Raphael Parish: $98,136.00

Please be as generous as you possibly can.

Amen to Action! As you may remember from the day after Thanksgiving, Amen to Action! is the event that gathered thousands of volunteers and their children to pack one million meals for people in need in our city. The current COVID-19 crisis has forced a change in plan this year. The Greater Pittsburgh Com-munity Food Bank has requested that we provide the one million meals between now and the end of July when they are needed the most. Consequently, they have to raise $200,000 between now and the end of July. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Amen to Action! are committed to reaching that goal.

Remarkably, several anonymous donors have been inspired to collectively give a matching donation up to $100,000. That means that every dollar you give will be doubled. Together, we can make a big difference. To donate, go to the webpage: https://plf.org/amentoaction/ or send a check (with Amen to Action in the note) to: Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation - 616 N Highland Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15206. Thank you for your generosity!

The Reopening of Our Churches (continued from page 4) At the time of this writing, we received word from Bishop Zubik regarding President Trump’s news confer-ence on May 22. We wish to include the Bishop’s statement:

“As Catholics, our faith is essential to our lives, and it is encouraging that our churches are recognized as essential nationwide. As we have since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Diocese of Pittsburgh will continue to follow all public health guidelines. We are working carefully toward our goal of gathering again for worship, with appropriate health and safety measures in place. We have outlined our reopening plan in our guide, Moving Forward Together, which our pastors and their parish teams have been reviewing and using to prepare to reopen for daily Mass starting June 1, 2020 and weekend Masses on June 6-7. The guide is available at www.diopitt.org.”

Please continue to read these important announcements as we continue to move forward together. We hope to begin offering daily Mass in both churches on June 1 at the usual time. Masses will be posted in next week’s bulletin. It is also our hope that we will begin celebrating weekend Masses on June 6 and 7. Many people have inquired about us adding Masses so more people can attend. We will make a decision about additional Masses after we see how many people come to church over the first couple weekends. Please note, in all probability, parishioners will need to pre-register in order to come to weekend Masses. Directions how to do so will be published in next week’s bulletin and Flocknotes. We will also share with you the guidelines for receiving Ho-

Our Memorial Tribute

Traditionally Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died

while serving in the U.S. military. We invite St Raphael and Sacred Heart parishioners to remember the heroes of our parishes who have died during the 2020 pandemic. We pray for them and for their families

who buried their loved ones without a funeral Mass at the time of their death. We look forward to a time in the near future when a Memorial Mass in Church will be celebrated for the following people

who died in the past 3 months.

Confessions

This Saturday – May 23, 2020, there will be two opportunities to share in Confession – the Sacrament of Mercy. For both opportunities, penitents are asked to wear a mask and to keep “social distance” – six feet – from the priest and other penitents.

Option 1: At St Raphael (3:00 pm to 4:00 pm) Father Steve will be seated at the front door of the church. Please park your car and wait your turn. There will be a sign or a marker to show where to wait your turn. Penitents may sit facing Father, or sit behind him for anonymity. Option 2: At Sacred Heart (3:00 pm to 4:00 pm) Father Sweeney will be seated on the plaza in front of the Walnut Street doors. Please park your car and wait your turn. There will be a sign or a marker to show where to wait your turn. He will be seated behind a confessional screen. Penitents may sit facing Father or stand in front of the confessional screen.

Coming Attraction

Attention Parents of Graduating High School Seniors: Please send us a picture of your son or daughter graduating from high school this year. Kindly include their name, high school, and a brief description of their plan after graduating. We want to design a very special insert in our bulletin for June 21. If you know a high school graduate in our grouping, send the details (name, picture, high school) to Manon at [email protected]

A wonderful committee of parishioners excited about honoring all of our seniors is designing a dis-play for the front yard of St. Raphael and the front yard of Sacred Heart. This should be a lot of fun for our seniors but also a joyful way for us to celebrate their accomplishments with them. If you are not a parent of a senior but know families who don’t read the bulletin but have seniors graduating from high school, would you please reach out to them and ask them to participate with us? We don’t want to miss any senior!

It’s Census Time! By now, households across the country received their invitation to take part in 2020 Decennial Census. And, for those households that have not yet responded online or by phone, a paper form will arrive in their mailbox soon. The Census is non-partisan but a right for each of us living or staying in the United States. A complete and accurate census will help continue to address concerns of poverty, homeless-ness, and hunger within our community. It will also drives funding for our hospitals,

emergency services, schools, and programs within our communities. As a church, we know how im-portant this is as we reach out through our mission work.

If you need to schedule a Mass Intention, please call Barb at 412-661-3100, ext 110.

Each weekday Mass that is concelebrated by our priests can have up to three Mass intentions (one for each priest to of-

fer). If you take a look at our Mass intentions list for the week, you will notice that we have many

openings since no day this week has three intentions. Ascension Thursday, for instance, still has space

for your intentions. While we work on pinpointing our new Mass schedule, we realize that scheduling Sunday Masses may be a bit trickier at this time, but many weekday Masses are still available. Please

contact Barb at 412-661-3100, ext. 110 if you wish to schedule a Mass intention.
