UK OFFICIAL
Royal Navy – enduring challenges
• Advanced materials and manufacturing techniques for ship building
– Improved strength to weight ratio for ship building, including a composite superstructure
– Novel alternative to Kevlar to protect high-value compartments
– Omni-phobic coatings for reduced drag and corrosion
– Improved thermal management to combat the ‘wild heat’ research requirement
• Application of novel materials to improve warfighting capability
– Hyperspectral low-observable coatings to reduce signature across multiple spectral
bands
– RF transmissive armour for radar arrays
– More affordable, adaptable and robust ballistic shields
– Low EO/IR signature, armoured bridge windows
– High capacity batteries to enable sustained covert operations/directed energy weapons
