SCIENCE WEEK UPDATE As part of Science Week, over the past few weeks, Years Three to Six have made cement pots and planted succulents with the help of Mrs Lucas, Mrs Davis and Mrs Warr. Thank you to the numerous people who donated cuttings for this project. The purpose of this activity relates to Nano Nagle Art competition that the students entered, themed ‘How Nano Nagle inspires us to care for God’s earth’. Succulents are a group of plants where the leaves tend to be thick and fleshy, and they can store water. They tend to thrive in dry climates and don’t like a lot of humidity. They still require some watering for the best growth and flowering. While they do need water to survive, they can endure extended periods of drought, relying on the stored water and nutrients in their leaves. If their roots are sitting in water for too long, they will start to rot and die. The students hope to nurture these and display some at the Northampton Show.

WASTEWISE UPDATE - PICKING OUR VEGGIES AND NO WRAP WEDNESDAYS

At St Mary’s we conduct Nude Food days each Wednesday, where student choose not to have one use plastic in their lunch boxes. Almost 100% of students make every effort to reduce their plastic on this day of the week. As part of Science Week, the Year 3/4 Class enjoyed reaping the benefits of the veggie garden produce and some took some leafy veggies home to share with their families.

PARISH NEWS SFX CATHREDRAL PROJECT UPDATE Progress continues on the internal works to the Cathedral (Stage 4) and work is about to commence on Stage 3 – the Midwest Flower Garden. Completion of the Project is scheduled for early October.

THE GERALDTON BELLS As part of the SFX Cathedral Precinct Project, it has been proposed to install a full carillon of 28 bells in the Cathedral’s western towers. The towers have been certified by an engineer as capable of housing the proposed carillon. The bells will be suspended from steel frames to be constructed within the towers. The foundation of the carillon is a set of eight bells that have been obtained from the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul in Godalming, England. A further 20 bells are to be manufactured by John Taylor Bells, Loughborough, England, to make the full carillon.

A view inside John Taylor Bells, England

PARTNERING WITH THE GERALDTON COMMUNITY

In the tradition of great bell carillons and bells in general being rung for significant community events, so too will the “Geraldton Bells” ring out on important occasions, providing a sense of solemnity and a focal point for the Geraldton community. The bells will ring the hours of the day (but not at night) and will play a variety of tunes for several minutes twice a day (12 noon and 6pm). On Sundays the bells will herald each Mass and play after the Solemn Sunday Mass. They will also feature in occasional concerts held in the Cathedral or Cathedral grounds and be available for weddings, funerals and other occasions. YOU CAN BECOME A BELL DONOR, PLEASE CONTACT GERRY EASTMAN.

Twenty –First Sunday in Ordinary Time– Year A “Who do you say I am?”Jesus asks his disciples this question in today’s Gospel. He asks us the same question. He is not seeking a textbook response or for us to repeat what others have said about him. He wants to hear our personal response. May we answer his question as truthfully as possible and then listen as he speaks to us. First Eucharist: Congratulations to Rose Simkin, Sienna Mulgrew, Lara Mincherton,Tyson Routledge, Chaz Simpson and Reeve Suckling who are receiving the Eucharist for the first time today. There will be a celebratory morning tea in the Nagle Centre after Mass. Migrant & Refugee Sunday: Today we also celebrate the contribution that migrants have made in our communities. Every year the Holy Father chooses a theme to be the focal point of these celebrations. The theme for the 103rd World Day of Migrants and Refugees is “Child Migrants, the Vulnerable and the Voiceless”. Pope Francis draws our attention to the needs of child migrants globally. He encourages by pointing out that, “Each person is precious; persons are more important than things, and the worth of an institution is measured by the way it treats the life and dignity of human beings, particularly when they are vulnerable, as in the case of child migrants.” The 48 Hour Perpetual Rosary Bouquet (A Gift to the Blessed Virgin Mary for her Birthday) commences Tuesday 5th September at 6pm and concludes Thursday 7th September at 6pm. All are invited to take part in this bouquet, praying the rosary anywhere, anytime during the 48 hrs. Please record your name & timeslot on the sheet at the back of the church, by Sunday, September 3rd when your names will be forwarded to be placed on a Scholl which will be presented during Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral in Perth on Friday, 8th September at 12:10pm. Congratulations to our Principal, Melissa Marquis who has been re-appointed for another five years. Episcopal Ordination DVD -You are welcome to place an order for a DVD of Bishop Michael’s Episcopal Ordination or a DVD of photos. Cost: DVD’s $10 collected from Diocesan Office or $13 posted.
