Dear Friends and Partners in Prayer,

We enter into a new year counting it a privilege once again to be partners in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus (Philippians 1:3–5), and enriched by your partnership in prayer. We continue to experience with you the power of prayer for this territory and our lives. It is evident as we travel across the territory that God continues to do new things in and through this great movement – The Salvation Army.

As we enter into this new year, we enter with a renewed strategic vision. “Still Fighting” – rooted in the words of William Booth’s great “I’ll Fight” speech yet applied to the world in which we live – 150 years since The Salvation Army began in the East End of London. While there remains one dark soul without the Light of God – we will fight.

We are an Army – an Army still fighting – and we recognise that our strength is in our lived experience of prayer. In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul speaks of the need to put on the whole armour of God. He then goes on to write: “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” (Ephesians 6:18 NIV).

Always keep on praying! Let us use this prayer guide to mobilise us to pray without ceasing. The prayer requests and focused areas provide a launch pad to pray for a fresh moving of God across our territory and around the world.

Let us be an Army that is constantly and consistently committed to prayer. Let 24/7 prayer be a normal part of our life and culture as we move into this new year and latter half of the first decade of the 21st century. What will you do to enable The Salvation Army to respond to God’s call to “always keep on praying”? I am excited to watch how we engage together in prayer and widen that circle of prayer warriors in these coming weeks.

We are grateful for the provision of this prayer diary and pray as we unite our hearts in prayer across this territory – praying without ceasing, God will do in and through us “more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20 NIV).

24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

When praying for corps Pray for the officers, local officers, soldiers, adherents and friends; the programmes; and community outreach. We want our corps to be relevant to the communities they serve, to meet the needs of their congregations, to help transform the communities they are serving and to bring about revival in their part of the Kingdom of God.

When praying for social centresPray for the managers, chaplains, staff and clients/residents. Change happens rapidly and often in these days, particularly in regard to government legislation, so we need to remember our friends as they negotiate these changes for themselves and for others. Many of those who use our centres are vulnerable and feel like their whole world is falling apart, and they may find it hard to trust others. Their needs are complex and often take time to resolve. So, as you bring these places and people before God, try to imagine what it would be like for you, then bring these feelings and longings before God.

When praying for departments Pray for the head of department, staff, and officers, and that their business operations and ministry will be effective for the Kingdom.

When praying for Salvationists serving in other territoriesPray that they will know God’s love, peace and protection as He leads them in their ministry.

When praying for other territories and regionsPray for those who live in other parts of our Army world—a world that is often impoverished and where persecution and oppression are part of daily life. Pray that their needs may be met and God will be their sufficiency at all times.

24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

Dear Friends,

I am fully believing that this Territorial Prayer Diary will remind you of the power of 24-7 prayer.

One of the greatest emphasis 24-7 prayer plays in our spiritual communities, as well as our communities of dwelling, is that it reminds us how vital the priority of prayer is. In short, it is talking to God and listening to His response and guidance. The 24-7 concept reminds each one of us that the Heavenly Father is available to respond 24 hours, 7 days of every week of every year. The goal in 24-7 prayer is to continue in prayer to reach every available person, at every available place, by every available ‘Spirit-led’ means at every available time. This relentless style of prayer is simple, profound, and extremely effective when it comes to responding to the requests and needs of colleagues, family, friends, the communities we live in and global issues.

Once again I am extremely grateful to Major Donna Bryan for her patience in compiling this diary, and would ask that you join with me in expressing gratitude to her for supporting this vital ministry throughout the territory. Donna has received a new opportunity in ministry commencing in January, 2016.

I leave with you a relevant Scripture from 1 Thessalonians 5:17 “Be UNCEASING in prayer [praying perseveringly]” (Amplified Version). (Capitals added for emphasis.)

Yours in Jesus’ Grace and Truth,Marney Turner (Major)Territorial Spiritual Life Development Secretary Evangelism and 24/7 Prayer Territorial Mission Resources Department

VALUE ONE OF A 24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

SIMPLICITY:Mother Theresa was once asked what was her secret in prayer. She simply said: “I listen”.

As western believers we have to guard against complication about prayer. Similarly, we need to be wise when it comes to intellect over and above obedience to the call of prayer.

A quote from AW Tozer epitomises the simplicity of prayer:

‘The key to prayer is simply praying.’

That is why the concept of 24-7 prayer is revolutionary. Jesus is calling us to shameless persistence in prayer.

Matthew 6:5 “… when you pray …” Write out the complete verse and reflect on the words:

Matthew 6:6 “… when you pray …” Write out the complete verse and take time to reflect:

Matthew 6:7 “… when you pray …” What does this verse in its fullness say to you?

24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

15

The woman who touched the hem of Jesus’ garment was acting on the simplest of all prayers.

Don’t complicate what is uncomplicated — SIMPLY PRAY in whatever way it works for you.

This is the number one value in 24-7 prayer in a persistent prayer revolution.

VALUE TWO OF A 24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

MISSION:Prayer and outreach are inseparable. When the Holy Spirit fell at Pentecost, it was upon a prayer meeting, and as a result three thousand people were saved.

Another value of a 24-7 prayer revolution is that people will become gloriously saved and set free from the chains that bind them.

Historically the Hebridean (Scottish) awakening of 1949–53 was a wonderful time when entire communities came to Christ. What an awesome experience to see God’s Holy Spirit burning through communities of people with His great Salvation.

A man by the name of Arthur Wallis observed, “Let it be burned upon our hearts by the Spirit of God, that this mighty movement was not only born out of prayer, but that it brought forth prayer and was maintained by prayer”. 1

Reflect for a time on Arthur Wallis’ statement. What are your responses?

1 Pete Grieg & David Blackwell, The 24-7 Prayer Manual (Colorado Springs, Colorado: David C Cook, 2008, p.125.)

VALUE THREE OF A 24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

HOLY INTIMACY:As we take time to observe 24-7 prayer, we see it is not just a good idea, it is God’s idea. God is calling us all to wait at Jesus’ feet, listen intensely to His voice and take up the opportunity to soak up His Word.

24-7 prayer has little or nothing to do with physical effort and a dutiful response, rather this type of prayer has everything to do with personal intimacy with the Lord.

24-7 prayer is more about ‘being’ than ‘doing’. It is about BEING in relationship with God, BEING His children, His friends, His inherited image, and adopted sons and daughters.

There is an amazing transaction that takes place when we engage God in prayer with no other agenda other than to BE with Him. This is called ‘holy intimacy’ and this is a vital aspect of a 24-7 prayer revolution.

How do you see your prayer life with the Lord?

Could it be described as an intimate relationship marked by Holiness?

Take time to reflect upon where you may be in this description:

24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

35

The more holy intimacy we have with God, the more we reflect His very nature in the world, in our communities and in all of our relationships.

When Mary had chosen to sit at Jesus’ feet instead of rushing around like her sister Martha, she had chosen to publicly prioritise her sense of personal identity and her personal priorities.

24-7 prayer is a place where wall-planners, rules of life and diaries are not the main focus. These parts of our life are dispersed by a glimpse of ETERNITY.

Take some time to allow the value of Holy Intimacy to be birthed in your life, through 24-7 prayer.

What do you need to put aside for this to be your experience?

44

VALUE FOUR OF A 24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

INTERCESSION:The Scriptures remind us that Jesus Himself lives to intercede on our behalf. What an incredible thought!

The Lord Jesus Christ not only intercedes for us, He role models how we are also called to be intercessors.

24-7 prayer is a great opportunity to intentionally intercede for OTHERS.

The verb intercede literally means “to plead on behalf of another” or to “mediate in a dispute”.

In Hebrews 7:25 the Word tells us: “Therefore He is able also to save to the uttermost (completely, perfectly, finally, and for all time and eternity) those who come to God through Him, since He is always living to make petition to God {and} intercede with Him {and} intervene for them.” (Amplified Version)

In the absence of any other Biblical adjunct to pray, this verse alone would surely be enough to persuade us that, in Christ, our lives are to be filled with continual intercession.

How tragic when we compartmentalise prayer as a poorly attended meeting in a time slot during the week. How vital it is that we rediscover the primary priestly call of the Body of Christ to intercession.

Hence the value of intercession in the 24-7 prayer revolution reminds us to lift the world to God in prayer.

Make a list of others who need your prayers:

24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

56

VALUE FIVE OF A 24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE:Jesus was an amazing model of what He preached in regard to the whole counsel of God, but I wish to highlight this area of His ongoing, relentless prayer. In all of the Gospels you will read about the priority Jesus placed on prayer.

Mark 1:35 tells us, “And in the morning, long before daylight, He got up and went out to a deserted place, and there He prayed.” (Amplified Version)

If you wish to influence others about 24-7 prayer please lead by example: be enthusiastic and excited about prayer yourself. Not only displaying eagerness about 24-7 prayer, but actually modelling it as Jesus did.

The early Church leaders also role modelled the priority of prayer. If you read Acts 6:4, there you will see: “But we (the leadership) will continue to devote ourselves steadfastly to prayer and the ministry of the Word.” (Amplified version)

In your own words how do you ‘devote yourself ’ practically to prayer?

24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

57

No-one else will make 24-7 prayer a priority if you as an influencer of other people don’t lead by example.

People will watch if you are in the prayer room or signed up for a number of slots in a 24-7 prayer initiative. Why not make the most of an opportunity to ‘watch and pray’ when you are seeking to encourage others to do the same.

Better still, why don’t you watch, pray and fast as the Holy Spirit leads you, then you will undoubtedly be a part of a 24-7 prayer revolution.

Remember you cannot lead where you won’t go and you cannot teach what you do not know.

What is God’s Spirit saying to you on this matter?

Remember this is not to be a dutiful response, but rather an act of obedience in response to ABBA FATHER’S call to pray.

24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

66

VALUE SIX OF A 24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

INNOVATION and EXPRESSION:One of the exciting aspects of 24-7 prayer is that it often creates space for innovation and creativity. All kinds of people who would not normally contribute to a verbal prayer meeting actually enjoy the liberty of creative prayer exercises, for example: • artwork • clay modelling • sand writing or building • prayer wall creations • prayer stations with appropriate images and props • prayer writing/poems/letters to God/letters to others • inspiration of writing songs of prayer• drama writing of prayer • Godly humour as we pray.

The list is endless of what can be created as we clear our agendas and really sit before the Word and the Lord. Coming before the Lord in 24-7 prayer usually demands our whole being to respond: emotion, imagination, personality and character, as well as giftedness.

Instinctively it appears that many people choose non-verbal ways to communicate with God when they are given the opportunity to do so. Prayers can suddenly be painted, drummed, enacted, sculpted, rhymed and choreographed. This is a valued aspect of 24-7 prayer. There is room and indeed encouragement to create your prayer to the Lord as well as voicing your prayers.

One only needs to look at creation to see the unlimited innovative character of God. Why can we not add our love, gifts and expression when it comes to prayer?

Take time to read Exodus 31:1-11 and you will see the call from God to a man named Bezalel. His role was to decorate the prayer room, to adorn the tabernacle with symbols and colour. Verse 5 says: “to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship.” (NIV)

When it comes to prayer don’t allow yourself to be stifled into a boring, predictable rut, but rather be creative and imaginative, and allow the Holy Spirit the opportunity to teach you and others His amazing creativity.

24-7 PRAYER REVOLUTION

67

When was the last time you felt totally energised by prayer to the point you became innovative?

If not, why not? What can be done to change this?

Include not only heart and soul in your prayer life, nut also art and soul.

Come on let us get creative as we commence or continue a 24-7 Prayer Revolution.

I am praying for revival of such a concept.
