“La Flute Francaise”, The French Flute, is the theme for our festival this year.

With a rich history of great influence from French flutists and the tradition of French method of flute playing, it is no surprise that France is also known as the motherland of the modern school of flute playing. Besides the “corner stones” of French flute exercise books and the vast repertoire for flute written by French composers, the French school is typically characterised by its delicate playing and the refined approach towards music and its interpretation.

To introduce us to French artistry, we are most honoured to have a prominent figure in the flute scene in Paris, Mr Philippe Pierlot, as our star artist this year. Apart from his solo recital on French music and classes for our young flutists, Mr Pierlot has also kindly agreed to mentor one of our competition winners at his conservatoire in Paris during a 2 week intensive course, with the support from the National Arts Council of Singapore.

We would also like to thank all our sponsors, partners, friends and supporters for their most valuable help and support. Without you, our festival will not be possible. We deeply appreciate your kind effort and we look forward to your participation again next year, which we shall have some really exciting line up of artists:Mr Denis Bouriakov, Celebrity Concert Series, 13th to 15th JuneMs Lorna McGhee, 5th Flute Festival Singapore, 21st to 24th August

Philippe Pierlot began studying the flute at the age of twelve, as the last student of the eminent professor, Joseph Rampal. Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alain Marion gave him their advice as well, and five years later he was admitted to the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de PARIS, where he won two brilliant First Prizes, in Flute and in Chamber Music. Shortly thereafter, he won the Barcelona International Competition.

His position as first Flute Solo in the Orchestre National de France has allowed him to play under the direction of the best conductors. While there he also began a career as a soloist and in chamber music concerts, playing in the most prestigious festivals in France: Evian, Colmar, Menton, Strasbourg, Midem Classique, La Chaise-Dieu, Concerts du Dimanche matin, Flâneries de Reims and etc. He also plays regularly in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Norway, Poland, Korea and Japan. He has been invited as guest soloist with many orchestras: the Orchestre National de France, Les Solistes de Moscou, Orchestre Franz Liszt in Budapest, Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Orchestre National de Chambre de Toulouse, Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, Orchestre Jean-François Paillard, Orchestre de Heilbronn, The Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Frisk Orkest (Holland), Orchestre de San-Sebastian, Krakow Symphony Orchestra and etc.

His repertory is eclectic and goes from Vivaldi to Goubaïdoulina and Claude Bolling, he plays on both a wooden flute and a golden one; he has enjoyed sharing music with Marielle Nordmann, Maurice André, Paul Meyer, Vladimir Spivakov, Olivier Charlier, Jean-Pierre Wallez, Patrice Fontanarosa, Henri Demarquette… He also played often with Jean-Pierre Rampal, Lily Laskine, Pierre Pierlot, Robert Veyron-Lacroix, etc... He is a member of the Turner Trio (flute, viola & harp), made up of soloists from the Orchestre National de France.

Mr. Pierlot has dedicated an important part of his time to teaching: as tenured flute professor for high-level students at the Conservatoire National de Région de Rueil-Malmaison for the last twenty years, he welcomes young flutists from every continent. He also gives master classes around the world: at the famous Britten School in Perigueux where he teaches every year, in Spain, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Argentina, Korea, and in Japan where he goes regularly. Director of a collection for the Editions Billaudot, he has helped publish a large number of pedagogic works, and has called upon composers like Jean-Michel Damase, Edison Denisov, Thierry Pecou, Anthony Girard etc. He has published works from most of the periods that enrich the repertory of his instrument. A jury member for the Jean-Pierre Rampal International Competition, he has also participated in many national and international flute conventions.

He has made more than a dozen CDs as soloist with orchestra, in recital, and in chamber music, for Erato, BMG, Arion, Maguelone, REM, Naxos, etc., in repertory ranging from Vivaldi to Varèse and Poulenc. His latest CD, the complete Sonatas for flute and basso continuo Opus 2 by Michel Blavet with Richard Siegel on harpsichord, was released in 2002.
