GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

September 8, 2019 - Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Following Jesus, really following Jesus, is much more challenging than we may think. He emphasizes this with strong language in this Sunday’s Gospel. He compares discipleship to the carrying of one’s own execution device — “his own cross” — and for the need even to “hate” what could disrupt one’s commit-ment. Some of this is standard hyperbole, exaggera-tion for effect common to the time period. Some of this should make us wonder how deep our discipleship goes.

“Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost?” Jesus imagi-nes this construction project gone wrong. Someone may lay the foundation but not have enough resources to finish. We’ve received the firm foundation of the sacraments — our baptism, for one, along with weekly Mass attendance and regular confession. Yet how of-ten do we find ourselves too distracted, exhausted, or uninterested to truly build our lives on our faith? We have all met such Christians. Some days, we may be those Christians ourselves. We become the incomplete tower that confuses and baffles the onlookers. “This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish!”

For some of us, our cross may feel heavier than we expected upon the first lift. Building a tower means laying stone upon stone. It’s a process. We don’t ar-rive at completion overnight. Grace is always sufficient to provide the resources, but we need to keep saying yes to the task. This week, consider your own disciple-ship. What is one area where you’ve become distract-ed or discouraged? How can that improve this week? Let God lay another brick on the tower.

¡Nunca! Siempre está con nosotros. Así sea.”

RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE

GRADUALLY, THE UNTHINKABLE

BECOMES TOLERABLE THEN ACCEPTABLE

THEN LEGAL THEN PRAISED

“In the Church (post-Vatican II) began a yearning for the lusts of the world. Think of it! ‘In Egypt we had fish for the asking, cucumbers and melons, leeks and onions and garlic.’ Abor-tion, violence, divorce and repudiation of vows which belonged to the Egypt of the world were now by some accepted or defended. No longer was a solid, moral phalanx thrown up against the spirit of evil. It was no longer what the Church believed or the Holy Father taught, or what the Word of God cautioned; the individual conscience of and by itself became the sole standard of right and wrong: “Each of us doing what he pleases’ (Deut12:8).” ~ Venerable Fulton J. Sheen

“Modern man has become passive in the face of evil. He has so long preached a doctrine of false tolerance; has so long believed that right and wrong were only differences in a point of view, that now when evil works itself out in practice he is paralyzed to do anything against it.”

Until all are welcomed in life and protected in law.

September 8: Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, Jesus lays out the de-mands of following him, the great cost of dis-cipleship. The Mission Statement of the Soci-ety of St. Vincent de Paul states: “Vincentians witness God’s love by embracing all works of charity and justice…the Society makes no dis-tinction in those served because, in them, Vincentians see the face of Christ.”

Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?

Safeguard the Children

DID YOU KNOW? Review your family phone numbers As a family, you should have a list of family emergency phone numbers that your children know from an early age. Review these numbers

together a few times a year. Children should know their parents’ cell and work phone num-bers, and they should know who to call — and how— in an emergency. Include the numbers for the police, the fire de-partment, and stress the importance of know-ing when and how to contact 911. For little children who cannot memorize all that yet, try writing the parents’ phone numbers inside their shoes.

¿Sabia Usted?
