The holidays are upon us, that time of year when all of
our calendars fill up so fast. Here are a few dates that I
ask you to add to your calendars:
Craft Show on Saturday, November 7th – 9:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. This is a great
event to get some early holiday shopping done. Call a friend to invite to go with
you or to come see you when you are volunteering. This is our largest fundraising
event so if you haven’t signed-up to volunteer or bake, please contact Steph or see
our sign up wall near the front desk.
Annual Board Meeting on November 20th - 1:00p.m. Please take time to come
and hear about what is going on with YOUR senior center. You will be voting on
new board members for the coming term and will hear from each of the committee
chairs as to what is happening in their areas. This is a great time to share your ideas
with the Board, too.
We all get so busy during this season. The approaching Thanksgiving holiday is a
perfect time (after the Craft Show!) for us to slow down and take a few minutes to
reflect on our blessings. We will have a tree in the great room for you to add
leaves, letting others know what you are thankful for. When we stop for a moment
we do see the blessings, and I think it will help us all to re-focus on what is really
important as we read what others write on their leaves. I thought I would start us
out: I am thankful for getting to work in an environment where hugs are given each
day, and that each morning I love to come to work to see the members of the “best”
Senior Center ever!!! I also love my family, on most days (if you remember, I do
have twin teenage daughters).
Many of us have family and friends in the area, and we are busy with celebrations
and traditions with them. Please remember that some of your friends, neighbors
and Center members may be alone this year. If you have extra space around the
table, please reach out to someone who may not have a celebration to attend. The
“more the merrier” is not just an expression; it is true, and you will make someone
else’s holiday special. ~ Debbi
I have been a member of CRSC since March 2011. Shortly after I
started to volunteer at the Center I was hired to work as the first
part-time paid receptionist. During the ten weeks I worked as a receptionist, I
developed a good understanding of what the Center was all about. I greeted
most of you in the morning as well as helping our riders schedule their
transportation. Being in the Center on a daily basis helped me to understand the
needs of our members as well as to gain an understanding of the roles of our
staff. It takes a lot of energy to run our Center and our staff gives 110%!
I’ve been fortunate to work as a nurse and transition into telecommunications,
having held management positions in both professions as well as controlling
budgets and managing personal. I also volunteer and am involved in non-profits.
I am still an active ski patroller and on the board for the Loveland Ski Patrol.
Besides traveling with my husband, I like to garden, knit, do crafts, volunteer as
a receptionist at the CRSC and play golf!
Currently I am the 1st Vice President on the board, in charge of fundraising and
community outreach. The event I am most proud of was our first Senior Life
Expo; we have already started planning it for next year. As an extension of my
job as VP, I sit on the board for Douglas Count Non-Profit Coalition; their
mission is to support smaller non-profits as well as be an umbrella organization
for Douglas County non-profits and to advertise Colorado Gives Day.
I believe in our mission and in supporting the town with transportation. I believe
our outgoing President has established a sound financial foundation, one that I
plan to follow. We are here to support the membership and understand your
needs. The best way to express your needs is to come to the Annual Meeting on
November 20th and vote!

There are so many needs for our largest fundraiser, our annual Craft Show.
There’s organizing at the Center the week before, goodies to bake, finishing
up crafts for the Center booth, set-up, tear-down and working the myriad of
areas of the show during the event from 9-4 on Saturday, November 7th.
Please sign up at the Center. Also, everyone can be in advertising — tell
others about the event, to increase our attendance.

Sometimes our Volunteer of the Month is someone visible in the workings of the
Center and you feel like you already know them, but other times someone less visible,
but equally valuable, is chosen to be honored. Many of you may not know Wayne
Teel, unless, that is, you have donated a car to our organization - he is the brains
behind that operation. Wayne, who lives in Parker, has been the coordinator for this
program for years, making sure that each car or vehicle that someone lovingly gives to
the Center receives the most bang for the buck. Bill Kelly, our Board of Directors
Fleet Manager, said that he had no idea what was involved when a vehicle is donated.
Over the four years he’s been on the Board, Wayne has taught him the ins and outs of
handling donated cars, teaching him when to sell, auction or salvage a vehicle. Bill
explained that through Wayne’s contacts with auction houses and salvage facilities
throughout the Denver metro area, the Center has averaged about $8,000 a year income
from donated vehicles. It’s plain to see that when people donate vehicles here, they
can rest assured that their donation will receive all of Wayne’s skill and expertise,
making it a win-win situation for all.
Wayne was born near Waco, Texas. He was raised as an only child after a brother died young. Wayne was a great baseball
player in his younger days until the life-changing day he broke his ankle while playing ball. He walks with a limp to this day;
needless to say, the injury cost him his baseball dreams. He started college at Rice University, but transferred to Baylor so he
could be closer to home when his mom became sick. It was there he became involved in theater.
Wayne met his wife, Natalie, in Waco when friends set them up on a blind date. They married in 1959 and are celebrating
59 years of marriage this year. Wayne worked in the trucking industry his entire career, living out east, in San Antonio and in
Denver before he and Natalie settled east of Parker 40 years ago when they built their home on a beautiful 5-acre lot. They have
two daughters who live in Portland, Oregon and in Fort Collins. They enjoy spending time with their grandson and three
granddaughters.
The Teel’s enjoy going to the theater in Denver and visiting the grandchildren when he isn’t out taking care of donated
vehicles. He also coordinates car donations for the Parker Senior Center and for the International Order of Rocky Mountain Old
Goats, a group for which he is also on the Board of Directors. We want to thank Wayne for his selfless and tireless service on
our behalf, and we want to encourage people to think of us when you need to get rid of a vehicle.

Orangutan stories of life...Chapter 3. If you've been following my articles the last couple of months, you know I've been privy to some wonderful orangutan stories my daughter has brought home when volunteering at the Denver Zoo. This month's "lesson" actually happened at another zoo. We have learned that orangutans are taught to bring any unusual things they find in their areas to their keepers for treats; orangutans love their treats.
One day the zoo keeper lost a large ring of keys in the orangutan area. Knowing they get a treat for each thing they turn in to their keeper, the orangutans found the keys and took the key ring apart. Then, if you can believe it, they hid each key around their area. After all the preparation, they, of course, turned in each key separately to get a treat. It took weeks to get all the keys back.
How can we put a wellness spin on this orangutan escapade? I think the zoo keeper was the student in this lesson, learning that it takes patience and time to achieve a goal. We can all apply the lesson. Every day one key, or wellness activity, can help you complete your goal, whatever that may be. If your goal is to lose five pounds to help reduce your blood pressure, it won’t happen overnight. However, if you make a plan to accomplish this, and stick to your plan, you will reach your goal. Just like the zoo keeper who had her keys returned, you have the ability to achieve your goal with commitment and patience.

WEATHER CLOSURE INFORMATION
We occasionally close the Center to keep everyone safe and
off icy and snowy roads, not always following the school
closures. Sometimes we may delay our opening.
There are 4 ways to check to see whether we are closed or opening late: 1) Call the Center and listen to the message - if there is no special
message, we are open; 2) Watch 9NEWS, CBS4 and Fox 31 - our information will be scrolled across the bottom of the screen; 3) Check
the homepage NEWS on our website as we will post it - you must actually go into the website, not just look below the map if you Google
it; 4) Like us on Facebook and you will receive notices. We try to have these announcements in place by 7:00 AM, although please
understand that occasionally we have technology issues. Also, in the event of a delayed opening, please check our phone message before coming to the Center, just in case we have to close. Thank you for
understanding as we make decisions regarding your safety.
The Rec Center provides indoor courts for us for Pickleball, the fastest growing senior sport in the
U.S. We have round-robin games during these open times. There are some extra paddles if you just want to give it a try. You do need to sign-in
and pay at the Rec Center. Call Dan Mitchell 303-653-1639 with questions.
In honor of their service and Veteran’s Day, we are making a display of photographs of any veterans involved with the Senior Center - any
branch and any time served. Bring a photo, any size, framed or not, to Deb in the office who will scan it and return it to you. Please also
provide your name, rank and branch of service. Deadline to submit is November 9th. We will then put up the display on Veteran’s Day,
November 11th, in honor of each of your service.
CONTEST: Everyone who views the photos through Nov. 20th will have the opportunity to match the photos with a provided list of
names. The person matching the most names will win a prize. Photos will be up through Thanksgiving.
It’s fall and the holiday time of year, including my favorite, Thanksgiving. Our biggest fundraiser, the Craft Show, is nearing. The library contributes to this with our very large book sale. We generally have lots and lots of books, puzzles, games, greeting cards and tapes. Our area is usually a very happy and busy place, so please stop by and say hi.
I am sure you have seen some changes this fall in our library. We have been pulling books from our shelves to use in the Book Sale. Our library is a small one, but we get a lot of donations so we must continue to make room for the newer materials when they come. You may not find something you are looking for, but come back and look again as books rotate in and out all the time.
Donations are welcome at any time and we are always looking for large print books for our members who have trouble with their eyes.
Enjoy the Craft Show, the holidays and all the good food, and the feeling of magic that always arrives with them.

This “Norman Rockwell Experience”
community event features carriage rides, hot
chocolate, non-profit booths, live
entertainment and, of course, Santa will be
present for photos and visits. Don’t forget to
enjoy the Rink at the Rock, an outdoor ice
skating rink. The highlight is the annual
lighting of the star on top of the Castle Rock.
The star atop Castle Rock has been lit to welcome
travelers each Christmas season since 1936. The star is 45
feet tall and lights up the night to be seen for miles. In the
midst of the Great Depression, in 1936, residents and
farmers were greatly suffering. Community leaders jumped
on Palmer Lake’s idea to build a star to offer hope, and the
owner of “The Rock” donated the land.
The star was designed by workers in the Works Progress
Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps groups (the
federal jobs programs of those days). The Town received
donations for the steel rods and local firemen carried them
up Castle Rock. Local businesses and townspeople donated
all labor and supplies.
In 1941, with all resources committed to winning World
War II, the electricity to power the star was a rationed
luxury, so it wasn’t lit. However, it beamed brightly on
August 14, 1945 in a converted “V” for U.S. Victory. The
star has been lit every Christmas season since.
It has now become such an iconic symbol that it has been
lit for serious historical moments like following the terrorist
attacks on September 11, 2001, and for moments of joy like
the Broncos Super Bowl victories. This year gaze upon the
Star of Castle Rock with hope and joy for the coming year.

So many local businesses have partnered with our Center
over the last year, and the Board of Directors and staff thanks them all for their support. In addition, companies
and organizations advertise with our publishing company and appear in the Rockin’ Seniors Newsletter, allowing
for a Center cost-saving measure. We appreciate their
support of our organization. Please note that the Center does not endorse any of the products or services.

The 15th Annual Golf Tournament was held on September 10th at Red Hawk Ridge. Sixty-one players enjoyed a beautiful course, great weather, wonderful meals and many prizes.
Thanks to all who played and to the sponsors and donors who helped it be a success, just shy of our $10,000 goal. A special
thanks to our committee who work all year: Phyllis Tumey, Doris Rollins, Jim Weglarz and Jim Johnson. We also want to thank the volunteers who put in many hours both on and off the course: Fran Cason, Gary Clement, Becky Cossey, Jim Decker, Gene Gray, Darald Hoffman, Connie Johnson, Jim Johnson, Sharon Kissell, Tom Miller, Jim Osbourn, Ross
Sparks, Lynne Staebell, and Al Wonstolen.
What fun was had by all as the men
“Dressed Like a Lady” and played from the women’s tee on one hole. Gene Gray (left) conferring with Jim Weglarz, dressed like a lady himself and enticed the golfers to participate in this fun event.

A WONDEROUS TRIP UP NORTH
By Marilyn Asbridge
On September 14th fourteen of us piled into the Castle Rock
Senior Center bus, excited and ready for our 3-day adventure up
near Grand Lake, Colorado. On the drive up we sure did see
inspiring views with mountains surrounding us with the golden
trees tucked in amongst the dark evergreens! We had lunch in
Grand Lake and then drove on to the Twin Pines Lodge, our home
for the next couple of days. This lovely log home sat on the edge of
a beautiful small lake, Sun Valley Lake, and was also large enough
to house all 16 of us – 11 lovely women and 5 understanding men.
Deb was in charge of the trip while her husband, Mark, and
friend Steve did all of the cooking. One couldn’t have asked for
more delicious meals, as well as snacks and drinks any time plus
wine for happy hour. Each meal was special with a gourmet menu
which they elegantly served us. We could enjoy our meals either
inside or out, although the rain sometimes interfered. Deb had this
event planned perfectly with everything thought through to the end,
except maybe forgetting paper napkins!
The rain never stopped us; we could gather around the warm fire
and visit to our hearts’ content. Day 2 brought a great surprise – a
cow moose and her young one grazing right outside the front deck!
What a treat! Later we took an hour boat ride tour of Grand Lake –
a beautiful lake surrounded by many lovely homes, although not
many occupied during the long winter. After a yummy dinner we
bussed into Rocky Mountain National Park to look for elk. We
weren’t disappointed; we saw many elk and heard the majestic bulls
bugling, as those of us without hearing aids heard out our windows
all night long. Back home we enjoyed a delicious dessert.
It was hard to leave this beautiful place on Day 3, but our trip
home was spectacular as well. Riding through Rocky Mountain
National Park over Trail Ridge Road was exciting, and stopping at
the Alpine Visitor Center was breathtaking – one felt on top of the
world. The famous Estes Park was a fun place to see, shop and
have lunch. Then back to Castle Rock where we arrived about 5:00
pm. I am sure that everyone went home a happy camper! A big
thank you to Mark Schoeberl for driving the many miles so
safely and patiently. Of course, another big thank you to Deb
Santy, Mark Santy and Steve Bender - a wonderful 3 days that
we could not have had without them!
