The 1983 version of ‘Mr. Cinders’, the musical comedy classic written by Viv ian Ellis and Richard Myers, with a libretto by Clifford Grey and Greatrex Newman. The story is an inversion of the Cinderella fairy tale with the gender roles reversed. It captures the last frantic gasps of the ‘roaring twenties’ before the gloom of the Great Depression settled in. It was originally a smash hit success of the late 1920’s, then seemingly fell out of fashion for a number of decades before it’s revival in 1983 starring Denis Lawson and Christina Matthews. A combination of changing tastes and the fact that pop-star Sting, took one of the musicals most well known songs, “Spread A Little Happiness”, into the charts, gave the musical a whole new lease of life. And once again the show was a smash hit success, running for over 500 performances in the West End. Since then the musical has been regularly revived and is now seen as a classic musical comedy. That the recordings made of Britain’s Soft Machine remain as rewarding and inspirational today as the moment of their making, qualifies the groups international stature as the most expressively intelligent of rock music’s progressive epoch. Born of the Beat Generation & Beat music, sacrificed on the clichéd tracks of jazz-fusion, the music in between by the classic quartet of keyboardist Mike Ratledge, saxophonist Elton Dean (1945-2005) , bass guitarist Hugh Hopper (1945-2009) and drummer Robert Wyatt is mercurial genius manifest. Still and all, a creative apex where the music attained a ‘whole greater than its sum parts’, occurred on the evening of February 28th, 1971 at the Henie Onstad Art Centre in Oslo, Norway.

Here the group was afforded a rare crucible for their collective creativity by virtue of an intimate concert space, accurate amplification, and an appreciative audience. Also in Henie Onstad for his own Art Exhibition was Soft Machine’s friend Mark Boyle (1926-2005) , who projected his sensory films during this concert. Thankfully, the performance was professionally recorded using classical ambient technique, and safely archived until the Henie Onstad Art Centre, and the musicians, granted Reel Recordings the honor and responsibility to present this magnificent recording for CD release. The results sound for itself as demonstrably the finest stereo recording of Soft Machine ever captured on tape. To celebrate and contextualize this two CD release a CD ROM including extensive notes and concert photographs is included. WATCHWORD is the impressive new album from Swindon-based acoustic folk/pop band MR LOVE & JUSTICE - the follow up to their 2004 album “Homeground” (Vanity VRCD004) . Whilst building on the acoustic folk/pop foundations of their previous release, Watchword presents a wider musical palette - including string and brass arrangements from Marcus De ‘Freitas that underpin Steve Cox’s crafted, intelligent song-writing, the shimmer of the beautifully mixed acoustic and electric guitars, layered vocal harmonies and above all else the memorable melodies that run throughout the album. The album also features a number of notable guest contributions including former XTC / Shriekback keyboard player Barry Andrews, rising star from Toronto the Canadian singer/songwriter and guitarist David Celia, and his fellow Canadians keyboard player Joan Besen (Prairie Oyster) and bassist/guitarist David Headon (Invisible Inc.). Lyrically the album covers a broad range of subjects from the personal and romantic to the political, historical and contemporary. With influences ranging from XTC, The Beatles, to Richard Thompson and Pink Floyd amongst others, Watchword comprises 13 new and original tracks from a talented collective of musicians delivering a varied and ambitious set of folk-tinged songs and styles over the course of the albums 54 minutes running time.
