SONOCO ALCORE’S RADIAL CORE IS THE INDUSTRY STANDARD Today, Sonoco Alcore® is leading the way in standardising Radial Crush Technology in theEuropean paper core market. As the technologyleader, Sonoco Alcore® focuses on understandingcustomers’ needs as well as market changes. Werealize that many producers are experiencingadded pressure to reduce costs associated withproduction, packaging and inventory while at thesame time increasing productivity. In particular, weare seeing significant focus by the EuropeanCommission to reduce packaging waste for bothplastic and paper as well as reduce carbonfootprints. Cores designed using Radial CrushTechnology allow producers to reduce costs andincrease productivity by using the right core for theright application.
THE RIGHT CORE FOR THE RIGHT APPLICATIONWhy is Radial Crush important for the film & textile industry?
When applying winding tension to elastic materialit elongates and, due to its memory effect, it triesto return to its original state, consequently creatingradial pressure on the surface of the core. This
means that the force is exerted uniformly around the circumference of the coresurface as shown to the left in figure1.
The core reacts to the radialpressure by reducing its insideand outside diameter andsimultaneously the core lengthincreases. Traditionally, themethod for measuring core
strength has been Flat Crush. However, thedeformations occurring in this test are differentfrom those when radial pressure is applied, thusnot simulating the right conditions when film ortextiles are wound on the core.
There is not a consistent correlationbetween Flat Crush and Radial Crushmeaning that Flat Crush is not aneffective indicator of core performancein applications involving the windingof elastic material. This is shownabove in figure 2.

SONOCO ALCORE® RADIAL CRUSH IS THE INDUSTRY STANDARD
WHAT DOES RADIAL CRUSH MEAN TO YOU?The core must be designed to manage the radial forces occurring in your applications inorder to retain the required dimensionalstability and functionality.
THE SONOCO® ALCORE RADIAL CRUSH SOLUTIONSonoco Alcore® designed the Radial Crush testing method to simulate the deformations occurringwhen elastic materials are wound on a core. During this test the core is placed in a compressionchamber and a linear growing pressure is exertedevenly on the core. Pressure build-up stops whenthe core breaks or at a pre-determined level.Measurements are taken to assess the core’s strength and stability.
BENEFITS IN BRIEFWe combine Radial Testing with field tests at the customer’s site to match the strength requirementswith the corresponding core properties. Theserequirements are influenced by both the materialproperties and machine parameters. For example, film gauge, lay-on roll, number of film layers, webtension and formulation type.
What benefits do Radial Crush optimised cores deliver?
• Cost performance - use optimised cores and reduce costs
• Increased productivity - consistent and reliable performance by adjusting the safety margin
• Decreased waste - less film / textile product is lost due to core failures
• Optimised production process - deliver insights into a customer’s different machines, settings and material types

Sonoco's radial crush tester has been endorsed by the Composite Can and Tube Institute in the USAas an accepted test method (CCTI Standard Testing Procedure T-158) as of June 2012. Commercialtesters are now available directly from Sonoco Alcore® so you can independently test the radialcrush strength of your cores.
