IEEE 802.11 Location Summary• IEEE 802.11k introduced Geospatial Location consistent with IETF

RFC3825

• IEEE 802.11y used location to support coexistence in a licensed band. This is not germane to emergency services requirements.

• IEEE 802.11v defines location as relevant to emergency services and introduces Civic Location consistent with IETF RFC 4776. Also defines location request/response for AP and STA, but only for post association.

• IEEE 802.11u extends 802.11v so that location can be supplied by ANQP prior to association. It also modifies 802.11v so that location is mandatory for an emergency call in any regulatory domain that requires location information.

• These mechanism provide location to the STA (EUT) which can then include it as a part of an emergency call. The format specified to forward it to a PSAP is IETF RFC 4119 PIDF-LO for geospatial and IETF RFC 5139 PIDF-LO for civic location.

IEEE 802.16 Summary

• IEEE 802.16-2009 Air Interface for Broadband Wireless Access Systems contained support for LBS and U-TDOA

• IEEE 802.16j Multihop Relay Specification introduced WGS84 for reporting BS and RS location

• IEEE 802.16m, Advanced Air Interface introduced IETF RFC 3825 geospatial format and support for enhanced LBS services

LBS and emergency services are further defined in two WiMAX Forum documents:

• WiMAX Forum Network Architecture Emergency Services Support WMF-T33-102-R015v02 (2009-11-21)

Location is locally accounted as IETF RFC 3825 for geospatial and IETF RFC 4776 for Civic formats, and is forwarded to the PSAP as IETF RFC 4119 PIDF-LO for geospatial and IETF RFC 5139 PIDF-LO for civic location.
