A Word From The Headteacher The last few weeks of term have certainly been busy with so many different festive events and activities. The Grandparents‟ Sing Song, Christmas lunch, the nativity, a trip to the pantomine, the special appearance of Santa and his elf, Festive Stay & Play, Carol Singing, the Christmas services, our Shoebox Appeal, the Christmas Fair and the Christmas parties have all helped to make the end of term enjoyable for everyone. Thanks to all who have supported these events. EYFS and Key Stage One loved their trip to the theatre this week to see „Cinderella‟. In addition the arrival of the Polar Express generated lots of excitement with the children dressed in their pyjamas and keen to jump aboard. All the children could definitely hear the Christmas bell ring but sadly all the adults were convinced the bell was broken! All our younger children visited Santa and his elf in the grotto. Mrs Churchill was an exceptionally good elf. The children excitedly heard who was on Santa‟s good list and loved sharing their Christmas wishes! Our performance of “The Sleepy Shepherd”, delighted parents and grandparents with their retelling of the greatest story of all time, with one or two unexpected amusing moments to make a memorable evening performance! All the children sang brilliantly at the Grandparents‟ Sing Song and the church services, with some fabulous readings and the re-enactment of the Nativity story. So the whole of December has been full of the joys of Christmas. Every day I see so many great achievements in school, both big and small. As always I would like to thank you all for your support this term. I appreciate the informal and formal chats, the emails, the telephone calls and words of support as together we can achieve so much. It‟s been wonderful to hear from parents who are new to the school about how well their child has settled and their feedback has been invaluable. “We are so pleased we chose Elloughton Primary” “ I am very impressed with the school and the process before starting school was great.” “I‟m delighted we moved here as my daughter seems happier at school than she‟s ever been before.” ‟I truly don‟t think that anything could have been done better…. All children were extended a wonderfully warm welcome.‟‟ We really do appreciate your support. So here‟s to a great Christmas. I do hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing holiday and look forward to welcoming you back in the New Year. Festive Afternoon Tea and Sing Song

Thank you to all the Grandparents who attended the Sing Song and thanks to FESA for organising the refreshments. It was lovely to hear the children singing and spreading festive cheer.

Full Marks

96 children have received 100% attendance this term. They received a 100% Attendance Certificate today and a swim voucher as a result of being in school every single day this term. Well done!

Cauliflower Cards

Thank you for supporting this initiative, we have once again had lots of very positive feedback. Thank you to everyone who ordered cards. We are delighted to announce that the orders raised a whopping £462.08 which will go towards resources for the school.

Jarbola

A huge thank you from all of the Year 1 children for helping support their Jarbola. Amazingly we collected 317 jars full of treats kindly donated from the whole school which raised £317 at the Christmas Fair. Thank you to all those who kindly filled a jar and visited our stall. A huge success!

Nursery

Let it snow! Let it snow! The nursery children have all really enjoyed the change in weather recently. We have been mark making in the snow, making snow angels and hunting for icicles. We have even been making little snowmen. We are hoping for a white Christmas.

Year 1 / 2

The Year 1 and 2 children were tasked with making a Christmas decoration for their Home Learning. There were some amazing pieces made which are on display in the classrooms. Charlie Welton made this impressive gingerbread house at home by himself (with a tiny bit of help gluing the walls together!) He kindly said the children could eat it, so they had a piece each. Well done Charlie and thank you for the tasty treat!

Year 1/2 have also been fully immersed in Christmas. They have been busy learning about the Nativity, trying to remember the order of key people who arrived at the stable in Bethlehem. They have written amazing letters to Father Christmas in the writing challenge and have sounded out objects from the Nativity in their phonics challenge. After the Christmas dinner, the children learnt how to make a snowman Christmas card and had to make it independently. The results were amazing!

After School Activity Clubs

After school activity clubs will recommence after February 2018 half term. Details to follow in the New Year.

Year 1

Despite the weather being rather chilly recently, the whole of Year 1 went outside in their science lesson to observe the latest changes in their observational tree. The children had previously sketched the tree in Autumn and were surprised to see how much it had changed. They carefully sketched the tree using feathery lines and added the appropriate colour back in the classroom. There was lots of speculation about where the leaves had gone, but Miss Marson found a partially rotten one and it was discovered that the leaves had rotted away into the ground.

Christmas Puddings The delicious puddings have arrived and look fabulous so we hope you enjoy them on Christmas day. The sales of the puddings have raised £244.79. Thank you for your support.

House Points Update Congratulations to Orion for being the winning house this half term. They were rewarded with the treat of traditional party games this morning. Well done! Keep up the good work in January 2018!

Moral Compass – Perseverance

During the month of December we have been focusing on the value of “Perseverance”. This is a perfect time of the year to be reinforce this value with new year looming, a time when many people traditionally make New Year‟s resolutions. Whether you make a resolution or not, the value of perseverance will only help in a positive way. For our children, we encourage them to constantly try their best, to not give up when they find things difficult and to welcome challenges. We teach them strategies to help them when they get stuck and to persevere when things get tough!

We actively encourage children to talk about their learning and to recognise they can learn from their mistakes.

Christmas Post Elves

A big well done to our Christmas post elves who have done a wonderful job delivering all the Christmas cards. They have devoted their lunchtimes to sorting the mail and taking it to classes.

Christmas Fair

A big thank you to FESA for organising such a wonderful Christmas Fair. There was a real buzz in school with children making items to sell and they were all so proud of their Christmas produce. The Summer house was the perfect setting for Santa‟s grotto and Santa was inundated with little visitors all night long. The evening was fun and very festive. Thank you for all your support and thank you to all the fabulous FESA volunteers for all their hard work and preparation in ensuring the night was such a success. An unbelievable £4,463 was raised by FESA, a record amount. A huge well done to everyone involved. Thanks you to Mrs Ward who sent this lovely email.

„Just wanted to say I was so impressed with our school fair, the happy atmosphere of the school parents and staff all working together created a magical night. I didn‟t hear one negative comment apart from a little one who needed a refund as Santa terrified her! Bless her. My children loved it, mostly because they ate 4 jarbolas of sweets! In the car on the way home Jasmine came out with “Mum I do wear my Elloughton badge with pride”, as a Mum hearing that is heart warming. I thought Lisa did an amazing job organising everyone she loved bossing her big sister around but I was proud of her too‟.

Thank you x

Mrs Ward…

Special Visitors All the children in EYFS and KS1 enjoyed a special visit from two magical visitors. An Enchanted Elf and Father Christmas arrived in the summer(winter!?) house and treated us to a wonderful story. Father Christmas was delighted to inform us that all the children have been very good this year and are on his good list. However, Mrs Bramall and Mrs Fulstow are currently on his not-so-good list. Let‟s hope by Christmas Eve they have made it onto his good list!

Christmas Lunch Thank you to Mrs Mawe and her team for a delicious Christmas Lunch. The children loved being served by the staff.

Humberside Cup Quarter Final

Friday 15th December saw the football team make the all too similar trip over the picturesque Humber Bridge to play Healing Primary School based in Grimsby. The group have progressed well over the previous rounds and have built a strong bond between themselves. The game started frantically with chances for both sides, a strong run and shot stung the Healing goalkeepers hands resulting in a corner which came to nothing. Healing grew into the game and were much more clinical in front of goal scoring 4 times. However credit must go to the children from Elloughton as they kept creating chances until the final whistle through intelligent play and clever movement off the ball. Unfortunately we bowed out of the competition for this year but some fantastic memories have been made and the improvement from one round to the next was a joy to witness. Well done to all involved and thank you to the parents who provided lifts to the various away locations.

Attendance at School

Research shows that children do not achieve as well in their education and in public examinations the more school absence they have.

So far this term we have had 63 absence requests which equates to 305 days of education lost.

Our average school attendance so far is 97%

Our policy is not to authorise holidays and we recommend that, where possible, medical appointments are made outside of the school day to minimise disruption to your child‟s learning.

A pupil who misses 10 days during one whole academic year will only attain 94.7% attendance

There is a strong link between the amount of absence and the results/qualifications that a pupil achieves.

Every lesson matters – children who have time off often find it difficult to catch up and do well at school.

Research suggests that just 17 days missed from school equates to a drop in a GCSE grade.

Nativity for Local Residents

It was a pleasure to welcome children from the local nurseries and elderly residents form the local area to the EYFS perform „The Sleepy Shepherd‟. The audience were thrilled to hear the children sing and act with such confidence. A lovely thank you card arrived below;

Cinderella

On Tuesday EYFS, Year 1 and 2 went to Grimsby to watch the pantomime Cinderella („Oh no they didn‟t!‟) What a wonderful time we had! It was lovely to see the children‟s faces so animated and deeply engrossed in watching what was happening on stage. I‟m surprised they didn‟t all have sore throats with all the shouting of „Boo, hiss!‟, „It‟s behind you!‟ and „Nana nicker!‟ – good old pantomime audience participation.

After ice creams in the interval, 4 of our children were chosen to join Buttons on stage to help out with the singing.

As we got on the buses to come home the children were asking if they could see it again and were they coming again next Christmas as well as saying how much they had enjoyed it. It was lovely that the following morning Amarachi came up to me to thank me for taking her and saying how much she had enjoyed it!

It was a real pleasure to take the children and they were a credit to Elloughton Primary School. By Miss Partridge

Reading with Dogs

This term six children have spent time every week reading to Islay, a dog from „Read 2 Dogs‟. Islay has thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and has sat very attentively listening to children as they read their books. Isla and her owner Mrs Gillian Shillaker, came into school last week to present the children with their certificates. Next term, six more children will get the opportunity to read to Islay.

Christmas is just around the corner and we hope that children, parents, and staff have a wonderful time. Everyone has worked so hard this term, as always, and as governors we never cease to be amazed at the variety of experiences that our children have had offered to them.

The governors would like to say thank you to all the school staff and children for their continuing hard work throughout the term. We would also like to say thank you for the support from parents and carers, and the community as a whole, in making a difference to so

many young people. The New Year brings with it continuing challenges as the school looks forward to further improvements and developments

So, from all the governors, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2018!

Lost Property

On the last day of term all class teachers will be clearing their classrooms and cloakrooms of unclaimed clothing/items. These items will then be taken to the school office and kept for the first two weeks of term only. Parents are welcome to visit the office at your convenience to claim any lost items. Any items unclaimed after 22nd January will be sent to charity.

Cookbooks

We still have some of our very own Elloughton Primary Family Cookbooks left if you are interested in purchasing one from the school office. The cookbooks have been created by FESA and are priced at £6.50 each. They are packed full of our children‟s tempting and easy-to-make meals for all the family.

All profits from the Cook books will be donated to the school.

Pre Loved Uniform

Any school uniform your child has out-grown would be greatly appreciated for us to sell from our new Pre Loved Uniform Shop.

You are welcome to visit our Pre Loved Shop which is located by the school office, anytime, at your convenience.

Year 5/6

Year 5 and Year 6 were tasked with a writing competition to share their favourite memories from this year.

Dear Mrs Woodend , I am glad to share my favourite times with you . In this year I have achieved much progress and have grasped more confidence. East Barnby was a great achievement for mostly all Y6s .I had many doubts before the trip like- do I really have to go ? However something changed my mind. Knowing that I had many friends and teachers that would comfort me, how could I say no?! Every day felt like an adventure no matter how many tears I cried. Writing letters made my feel so much happier. Joe, my instructor, was probably the person who kept me going ( really I thought my feet would freeze). Samantha, Lucy and I really enjoyed putting a competition together .We couldn't believe we actually raised £10.11 even if it didn't seem that much . I'm glad everyone in my competition won something . It's a good job there was 3 prizes because only 3 people . Every day, we prepared. Thank you for giving me this time to share my favourite memories from this year. I hope I can achieve more next year Yours faithfully Ruby Atherton

The Trenches

This year we have been learning about World War 1 and how the soldiers suffered living in the filthy trenches. We went to Peggy Farrow wood and we had to pretend that we were soldiers and do activities that they had to do in world War 1.

These activities involved walking long distances, finding hidden treasures in the mud and capture the Germans. This task pushed our abilities and helped us figure out how the soldiers lived in World War 1.

We have just recently written our hot writes which some of you might see at the church on Wednesday at the Christmas Carol service. We wrote a diary as if we were the soldiers in World War 1 and we wrote about what they did for one of their daily tasks.

I really enjoyed learning about soldiers in the trenches because some of them were really young and extremely brave. Some of them were very ill because they were walking in thick dirty puddles from not having proper toilets.

It is important we never forget their bravery and courage, by putting their lives at risk to save our Country.

My Favourite Memory 2017

Wow this was a difficult decision but it has to be the residential trip to East Barnby in November! Here‟s the reasons why:

I did things I‟ve never done before

It was a once in a life time experience

It was extraordinary

I was with all of my friends

The teachers were very supportive and great fun

It snowed; we made an igloo!

The chicken curry was the best

It was even more special as it was my last trip at Elloughton School with my great friends that I will treasure for life and never forget.

15 Amazing Singers!

On Wednesday 13th December 15 children from Elloughton Primary school walked all the way to the local golf club.

Their mission was to sing!

Lots of people were eating their lunch and waiting for the children.

They finally went in to the dining room and stood next to a lovely large Christmas tree.

They sang many songs. The highlight was when they sang the last verse of Silent Night in German.

Everyone had a fabulous time.

The children were very excited when they received a selection box as a thank you from the golf club.
