8:00 - 8:30 Registration and Continental Breakfast Lobby

At the conclusion of the Opening General Session, adult participants will be asked to exit the Atrium and proceed to the Hall at Patriot Place. MIAA Student Advisory Committee members will be waiting in the back of the Atrium to escort the adults from the E1 Stadium Exit in the Northeast Lounge to the Hall Entrance.

At the conclusion of the program, a buffet lunch will be served. Attendees are asked to remain seated until being dismissed by the Gillette Stadium staff to join the buffet lines. Following lunch, attendees are asked to use the E1 Stadium Exit located in the Northeast Lounge. MIAA Staff and Student Advisory Committee members will be di-recting attendees to the exit and distributing Sportsmanship Honor Roll banners/patches to qualifying schools.

Everyone has the capability to be a leader. It takes courage and passion and sometimes you have to be uncomfortable, but we can all do it. You’re leaving a legacy on this world whether you realize it or not. What you do with your life will boil down to one question: “What do you want to be remembered for?”

At the conclusion of the program, a buffet lunch will be served. Attendees are asked to remain seated until being dismissed by the Gillette Stadium staff to join the buffet lines. William N. Gaine, Jr. Sportsmanship Award

Kim DoCouto Somerset-Berkley Regional High School

Assistant Principal

Kim M. DoCouto serves as Assistant Principal at Somerset Berkley Regional High School. Before entering her new position, Kim was the Director of Athletics at Somerset Berkley Regional High School from 2005-2014. During this time she was the chair of the MIAA Sportsmanship Committee (2008-2014), co-chair of the District D Committee (2009-2014), served on the Field Hockey Committee (2009-2011) and was nominated to be a member of the Board of Directors for the 2014-15 school year. Kim attended the MIAA Leadership Training Institute (2008), was a Keynote Speaker at the MSSADA

Conference in 2009, attended the NE Leadership Conference (2013), served as the District D Mentor Liaison and is a Certified Athletic Administrator. In addition to her service and commitment at the district and state level she was the recipient of the MSSADA District D Ted Damko Award in 2007 and the MSSADA District D Athletic Director of the Year in 2014.

Kim coached field hockey from 1997-2005 and is a field hockey official and a member of the Boston Field Hockey Umpires' Association. Kim pursued the goal of developing student athletes as community leaders by creating Raiders Athletic Leadership Association (RALA), a leadership team made up of captains and student ambassadors charged with improving their teams, school and community. RALA raised money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Boston Children’s Hospital, Wounded Warrior Project and St. Jude’s Hospital through t-shirts and donations. Kim’s tenure as athletic director was defined by promoting sportsmanship to her coaches, student-athletes, parents and community members, in addition to the Eastern Athletic Conference by creating leadership conferences within the league to teach students the importance of educational ath-letics.

Kim is a Somerset native and attended Somerset High School, now Somerset Berkley Regional High School. She received her Bachelor of Science from Westfield State University and her Masters in Education at Bridge-water State College. After college she returned to her hometown and began her career teaching physical ed-ucation at Somerset Middle School. She is dedicated to her “Raider Pride” roots, giving back to the school system she enjoyed so much. Kim and her husband of four years, Mike, live in Somerset with two pugs and they are expecting their first child this December.

William N. Gaine, Jr. Sportsmanship Award History

William N. Gaine, Jr. was appointed Assistant Executive Director of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) in October 1979. During his 35-year career with the MIAA, Bill assumed major responsibilities and leadership in the areas of student eligibility and health/safety of the student-athlete through his role as liaison with the MIAA Wellness Advisory and Sports Medicine Committees, the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Department of Public Health. In July 2013, Mr. Gaine was appointed Executive Director of the MIAA and MSSAA.

Sportsmanship is a specific area where Mr. Gaine dedicated his career. Some of his most significant contributions were developed through his role as liaison for the MIAA Sportsmanship Committee. He worked diligently to uphold the ideals of ethics, integrity, fair play and respect in interscholastic athletics. Through his leadership, the MIAA developed numerous policies, programs, resources and methods of recognition that establish a healthy and positive environment for interscholastic athletic competition and promote the importance of respect for self, teammates, coaches, officials, opponents and the game itself. Statewide programmatic initiatives to which Mr. Gaine has been an architect and catalyst include, Coaching Education, Student-Athlete Citizenship clinics and conferences, New England Student Leadership Conferences, along with MIAA Leadership camps for High School Captains and Community Service. In 2012, these initiatives became indentified as the “Pillars” of education based athletics and were organized into the curriculum of Educational Athletics. That same year at Mr. Gaine’s creation and recommendation a state-wide standing committee on educational athletics was approved by the MIAA Board of Directors.

In honor of his career-long dedication to the promotion of sportsmanship in interscholastic athletics, the MIAA Sportsmanship Committee established an award in Bill Gaine’s name and made a surprise presentation to him as the first award recipient during the 15th Annual MIAA/MSSADA Sportsmanship Summit in 2008.

Taylor Twellman, a former U.S. Men’s National Team player and Major League Soccer MVP with the New England Revolution, is ESPN’s lead analyst for Major League Soccer and U.S. Men’s National Team matches.

Twellman played eight professional seasons for the Revolution and was one of Major League Soccer’s most prolific forwards before his career was prematurely cut short after suffering from multiple concussions. He scored 101 goals in 174 matches for the team.

Twellman was drafted second overall by the Revolution in 2002 after he returned to the United States following a three-year (1999-2002) stint with the German Bundesliga club 1860 Munich. In his first MLS season, Twellman scored 23 goals and finished runner-up for the MLS Most Valuable Player and was named to the MLS Best XI. In 2005, Twellman led the league in goals scored with 17, won the league MVP, and was again named to the MLS Best XI.

With Twellman on its active roster, the New England Revolution enjoyed its most-successful era. From 2002-2007, the team played in four MLS Cups (2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007), two MLS Eastern Conference Finals (2003 and 2004), won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2004 and the North American SuperLiga in 2008.

A highly recruited multi-sport athlete who lettered in football, basketball, soccer and baseball at St. Louis University High School, Twellman chose to play soccer at the University of Maryland on an athletic scholarship. He was named a second-team All-America as a freshman in 1998 and finished as a runner-up for the Herman Trophy – awarded to the top college soccer player in the country – in his sophomore season (1999) before leaving college to play professional soccer.

Since his career-ending injury, Twellman has dedicated himself to generating awareness about the dangers of concussions and head injuries, particularly in soccer and has become a sought-after speaker and facilitator at conferences and seminars, focusing on increased awareness among youth players.

For over seven years, Taylor has suffered from the effects and symptoms of post-concussion syndrome (“PCS”.) Taylor realized, his career-ending injury was a life-changing event and was inspired to make a difference in the world of concussions. He founded ThinkTaylor, a foundation that is driven and dedicated to changing the culture in the world of concussions. ThinkTaylor’s posi-tive message emphasizing awareness, education and putting the health of kids first is creating a positive social change and in return a safer, healthier and smarter environment.

In September 2015, ThinkTaylor partnered with the MIAA for the first ever, ThinkTaylor Concussion Awareness Week in Massachu-setts, reaching 27,000 varsity soccer student-athletes. The impact was far-reaching and many students supported the cause by wearing orange, ThinkTaylor’s color and posting their support on social media sites. With the help of the MIAA, students and their schools, ThinkTaylor was able to begin creating social change in Massachusetts and are looking forward to the growth of the move-ment.

Ron Burton Community Service

Award History

Ron Burton, community philanthropist and former professional football player, passed away in 2003, but his legacy lives on in New England and beyond. He used his football legacy to help deliver his message of hope, determination and optimism, emphasizing that love, strong family values and hard work can overcome any obstacle.

Mr. Burton hailed from Springfield, Ohio. At the time he graduated from high school, he was considered the finest football player in the state and had offers from 47 colleges. He chose Northwestern University and went on to become one of the greatest players in school history, eventually being inducted into the National Football Foundation’s College Hall of Fame. He was selected by the Boston Patriots as a first round draft pick in 1960 and played with the team until his retirement in 1966.

Throughout his years with the Patriots, and the subsequent years he spent in broadcasting and insurance, community service was a constant thread running through Mr. Burton’s life. He served on many civic boards and charities and was widely recognized for his service and philanthropy. He established the Ron Burton Training Center in Hubbardston, Massachusetts, with the mission to “build within youth from low income communities, racial harmony, leadership, self determination, respect and love for others through a program of spiritual, educational and physical fitness training in a wholesome, caring environment.”

In 2003, the MIAA instituted a Community Service Award in Ron Burton’s name and the first recipient was his son, Steve Burton.

Norm Laviolette, CEO and Co-Founder and Executive Producer of Improv Asylum, Norm brings corporate as well as military experi-ence toward the continued development and expansion of Improv Asylum’s theatrical and IA Innovation’s business divisions. Prior to a career in comedy and teaching, Norm worked in the marketing and PR industries in New York City. He is a former mem-ber of the Massachusetts and Vermont Army National Guards and a graduate of the Vermont Military Academy’s Officer Candidate School. Norm continues to lead Improv Asylum’s strategic business and artistic vision locally, nationally and globally.

Mike Smith: From humble beginnings in Imperial, NE to the

founder of two non-profits, Mike has influenced hundreds of thou-

sands of youth in schools nationwide. Mike lives his life as a

“professional teenager” that doubles as a youth motivational

speaker and action sports personality. Whether it’s motivating

students to change the culture of their school; or teaching others

how to start and maintain successful organizations; or giving back

to the homeless and lesser fortunate across the country; Mike in-

spires others to be extraordinary.
