Operating mechanismfunctions

Motor operating mechanism 1)(M1 *)

In the case of the motor operat-ing mechanism, the closingspring is charged by means ofa motor and latched in thecharged position (the “springcharged” indication is visible).Closing is effected either bymeans of an ON pushbutton ora closing solenoid. The closingspring is recharged automati-cally (for auto-reclosure).

Manual operating stored-energy mechanism

The closing spring is chargedby means of the supplied handcrank until latching of theclosing latch is indicated(= “spring charged” indication).

Subsequently the vacuumcircuit-breaker can be closedeither manually or electrically. The closing spring can be re-charged manually. The “possibil-ity to close” is thus stored oncemore (for auto-reclosure).

Manual spring-operatedmechanism(= spring CLOSED,stored-energy OPEN)

The closing spring of the vacuumcircuit-breaker is charged bymeans of the supplied handcrank until the vacuum circuit-breaker closes. Subsequentlyeither manual or electrical open-ing is possible.

Vacuum circuit-breakers withspring-operated mechanism arenot suitable for auto-reclosure.

Secondary equipment of the 3AH5 and 3AH6 vacuum circuit-breakers

The scope of the secondaryequipment of the 3AH vacu-um circuit-breaker dependson the type of applicationand offers a wide range ofvariations, thus allowingeven the highest require-ments to be satisfied.

Closening solenoid

• Type 3AY15 10 (Y9 *)

• For electrical closing

Shunt releases

• Types:– Standard: 3AY15 10 (Y1 *)– Option: 3AX11 01 (Y2 *),

with energy store

• Tripping by protection re-lay or electrical operation

Current transformer-operated release

• Type 3AX11 04 (Y6 *) fortripping pulse W 0.1 Ws inconjunction with suitableprotection systems, e.g.7SJ4 protection relay,SEG relay (other designson request)

• Used where no externalauxiliary voltage is avail-able, tripping by protec-tion relay

Undervoltage release

• Type 3AX11 03 (Y7 *)

• Comprising:– Energy store and

unlatching mechanism– Electromagnetic system,

to which voltage ispermanently applied inthe CLOSED position ofthe vacuum circuit-breaker;tripping is initiated whenthis voltage drops

• Connection to voltagetransformer possible

Position switch

• Type 3SE4 (S4 *)

• For signalling “closingspring charged“

• Only in conjunction withstored-energy mechanisms

Secondary equipment of the 3AH6vacuum circuit-breaker (typical example)

Anti-pumping (standard)(mechanical and electrical)

• Function: If CLOSE andOPEN commands are ap-plied simultaneously andcontinuously to the vacuumcircuit-breaker, this revertsto its OPEN position afterclosing. The circuit-breakerremains in this position untilthe OPEN command is eli-minated and a new CLOSEcommand is given. Thuscontinuous closing and ope-ning (= pumping) is avoided.

Breaker tripping signal(standard)

• For electrical signalling(as pulse > 10 ms), e.g. toremote control systems,in the case of automatictripping (e.g. protection)

• Via NO contact (S6 *)and cut-out switch (S7 *)

Varistor module

• As overvoltage protectionfor protection devices inconjunction with inductivedevices in the vacuumcircuit-breaker (limiting toapprox. 500 V)

• Recommended for auxil-iary voltages W 60 V DC

Three-position switches as three-position switch-disconnectors or disconnectors

Common features

• Metal-enclosed

• Located in agas-insulatedswitchgear vessel

• Switch positions:CLOSED-OPEN-EARTHED

• No cross insulationbetween phases

• Three-position switchwith air-insulatedprimary connectionsfor busbar and feeder

• Operation via agas-tight welded-in me-tal bellows in the frontof the switchgearvessel

Mode of operation

The switch shaft with themoving contact piecesrotates inside the cham-ber containing the fixedcontact pieces.

Compression vanes, which rotate in conjunc-tion with the switchshaft, divide the arcingchamber into two sub-chambers each of whichchanges in conjunctionwith the rotation.

During the switchingmovement, the compres-sion vanes generate apressure difference be-tween the subchambers. The SF6 gas flowsthrough a nozzle, causesa directional blow-out ofthe breaking arc andquenches it rapidly.

Interlocking is not neces-sary as the “CLOSED”and “EARTHED” func-tions cannot be imple-mented simultaneously.

– For all three-positionswitches (except in paneltypes TR and TR1)

• Spring-operated /stored-energy mechanismFor transformer paneltypes TR and TR1 as wellas for busbar voltage me-tering panel type ME31-F

The three-position switch isoperated via a rocker withmetal bellows which isgas-tight and welded at theswitchgear vessel.

Motor operatingmechanism (option)

The manual operating me-chanisms can be equippedwith motor operating mecha-nisms both for the three-position switch-disconnectorand for the three-positiondisconnector.

Operating voltages for motoroperating mechanisms:– 24, 48, 60, 110, 220 V DC– 50/60 Hz 110 and 230 V AC

Electrical operation:

• Standard: Remote opera-tion (applied to terminal)

• Option: Local operationby momentary-contactrotary control switch

Shunt release (option)

Spring-operated/stored-en-ergy mechanisms can beequipped with a shunt re-lease. Remote electricaltripping of the three-positionswitch-disconnector is possi-ble via the magnetic coilof the shunt release, e.g.transformer overtemperaturetripping.

To avoid thermal overloadingof the shunt release in theevent of a continuous signalthat may be applied, theshunt release is switched offvia an auxiliary switch whichis mechanically coupled withthe three-position switch-disconnector.

Auxiliary switch (option)

Each operating mechanismof the three-position switch-disconnector can be option-ally equipped with an auxil-iary switch for the switchposition indication:– Function switch-discon-

nector or disconnector:CLOSED and OPEN:2NO + 2NC

Switchgear Type SIMOSEC up to 24 kV, Air-Insulated, Extendable

Short-circuit/earth-faultindicator (option)

The ring-main feeders canbe equipped with a 3-phaseshort-circuit or earth-faultindicator:

• Optical signal when a pre-selected pickup value isexceeded

• With ring-type sensors

• Display panel, withdraw-able housing, dependingon the type

• Short-circuit pickup values:e.g. 400, 600, 800 or1000 A

Option: Remote electricalindication via contact (1NO +1NC contact, passing con-tact), applied to terminal

Ready-for-service indicator(option for three-positionswitch)

• Self-monitoring; easy toread

• Independent of tempera-ture and pressure varia-tions

• Independent of site altitude

• Only responds to changesin gas density

• Option: Alarm switch“1NO contact”

Mode of operation

For the ready-for-service indi-cator, a gas-tight measuringbox is installed on the insideof the switchgear vessel.

A coupling magnet, whichis fitted to the bottom endof the measuring box, trans-mits its position to an outsidearmature through the stain-less steel switchgear vessel. This armature moves theready-for-service indicator ofthe switchgear.

While changes in the gasdensity during the loss ofgas, which are decisive forthe insulating capacity, aredisplayed, temperature-dependent changes in thegas pressure are not. Thegas in the measuring box hasthe same temperature asthat in the switchgear.

The temperature effect iscompensated via the samepressure change in both gasvolumes.

Type of service location

SIMOSEC switchgear can beused as an indoor installation inaccordance with IEC 61 936(Power installations exceeding1 kV AC) and VDE 0101

• Outside lockable electricalservice locations at placeswhich are not accessible tothe public. Enclosures ofswitchgear can only beremoved with tools.

• Inside lockable electricalservice locations. A lockableelectrical service location isa place outdoors or indoorsthat is reserved exclusively forhousing electrical equipmentand which is kept under lockand key. Access is restrictedto authorized personnel andpersons who have beenproperly instructed in electri-cal engineering.Untrained or unskilled per-sons may only enter underthe supervision of authorizedpersonnel or properly instruc-ted persons.

Terms

“Make-proof earthing switches”are earthing switches withshort-circuit making capacityaccording to– IEC 62 271-102

and– VDE 0671-102

Insulating capacity

• The insulating capacity is veri-fied by testing the switchgearwith rated values of short-duration power-frequencywithstand voltage and light-ning impulse withstand volt-age according to IEC 60 694/VDE 0670-1000 (seetable “Insulating capacity”).

• The rated values are referredto sea level and to normalatmospheric conditions(1013 hPa, 20 °C, 11 g/m3

humidity in accordance withIEC 60 071 and VDE 0111).

• The insulating capacitydecreases with increasingaltitude. For site altitudes above1000 m (above sea level)the standards do not provideany guidelines for the insula-tion rating. Instead, specialregulations apply to thesealtitudes.

Site altitude

As the altitude increases, theinsulating capacity of insulationin air decreases due to thedecreasing air density.

For SIMOSEC switchgear thedecreasing insulating capacitymust be taken into accountfor site altitudes above 1000 m(above sea level), see alsoIEC 60 694 /VDE 0670-1000.Result:

According to the abovetable, a switchgear for arated voltage of 24 kV isto be selected.

* In future, all standardsfor switching devicesand switchgear will besummarized inIEC 62 271

Standards

Standards, specifications, guidelines

• Definitions of criteria:– Criterion 1

Correctly secured doors, shutters etc. must not open

– Criterion 2Parts of enclosedswitchgear which may causea hazard must not fly off

– Criterion 3No holes in the freelyaccessible external parts ofthe enclosure as the result ofburning in or tearing open

– Criterion 4Vertically arrangedindicators must not ignite

– Criterion 5Horizontally arrangedindicators must not ignite

– Criterion 6The effectiveness of theearth connection must notbe detrimentally influenced

In the event of an arc fault atthe cable connection, pressurerelief is effected to the rear andupwards.

For free-standing switchgear apressure-relief duct fitted at therear is optionally available up to20 kA.

Tests for resistance tointernal arc faults

• Safety of operating personnelensured by tests to verify re-sistance to internal arc faults

• Internal arc tests in accord-ance with IEC 60 298 /VDE 0670-6 * by agreementbetween operator and manu-facturer

• Internal arc tests performed inaccordance with IEC 60 298,Appendix AA / VDE 0670-6,Appendix AA *

• The possibility of arc faultsin SIMOSEC switchgear ismuch less due to:

– Metal-enclosed and gas-insulated switching functions(e.g. of three-positionswitch-disconnector and3AH5 vacuum circuit-breaker)

– Logical arrangement ofoperating mechanismelements and mechanicalinterlocks

– Short-circuit-proof feederearthing by means of thethree-position switch-disconnector

Cable testing

• For circuit-breaker andswitch-disconnector feeders

• DC voltage test

before the test:

Remove or disconnect anyvoltage transformers at thecable connection inSIMOSEC switchgear.

SIMOSEC switchgear forrated voltages up to 24 kVcan be subjected to cabletests at a max. DC testvoltage of 72 kV. The voltageat the busbar may be 24 kVin this case.

Test voltages:

• For cable testing– the installation and

operating instructions ofthe switchgear

– the standardsIEC 60 298 / VDE 0670-6 /Section 5.107 *

– the information on manu-facturer-dependent cablesealing ends

– the cable version(e.g. paper-insulated mass-impregnated cables, PVCcables or XLPE cables)

must be observed.

Climate and ambientconditions

SIMOSEC switchgear may beused, subject to possible addi-tional measures – e.g. panelheaters or floor covers –under the following ambientconditions and climate classes:

• Ambient conditions– Natural foreign materials– Chemically active pollutants– Small animals

• Climate classesThe climate classes areclassified according toIEC 60 721-3-3

SIMOSEC switchgear is largelyinsensitive to climate andambient conditions by virtue ofthe following features:

• No cross insulation forisolating distances betweenphases

• Metal enclosure of switchingdevices (e.g. three-positionswitch) in gas-filled stainless-steel switchgear vessel

• Dry-type bearings inoperating mechanism

• Essential parts of the operat-ing mechanism made ofcorrosion-proof materials

• Use of climate-independentthree-phase current trans-formers
