Sirach 27:4-7; 1 Corinthians 15:54-58; Luke 6:39-45

Congratulations to our eighth grade students

who will be confirmed at the Cathedral this

Sunday afternoon. May the gifts of the Holy

Spirit guide them always through their lives.

Next Sunday (and just in time before Lent) we

will welcome our third grade students for a

Donut Sunday. Please join us, especially at the

9 AM Mass as we celebrate with our third

grade.

Lent is fast approaching and it is helpful to

begin thinking about our Lenten

commitments. This is a good time to consider

the sacrifices that we might take on. Lent is a

time to recommit ourselves to the Lord. We can

often profit by simplifying or reducing the things

we use in life. Pruning away the excesses is a

good way to make more room for the Lord in

our daily routine. This is the time to face any

bad habits and dedicate ourselves to living a

better life, being more generous, and focusing

on prayer.

During Lent we add an evening weekday Mass

at 5:30 PM in addition to the morning Masses at

7 and 8 AM. I encourage each of us to

consider making time for daily Mass, especially

if this is not currently part of our regular spiritual

routine. Plan ahead now so we can be ready

to begin a good Lenten program with Ash

Wednesday.

Lent is also a good time to make a special

effort to go to confession and to attend Stations

of the Cross. We will have confession and

Stations available on the Fridays of Lent. As we

remember the Lord’s Passion on the Fridays of

Lent, and as we also do penance on these

days by abstaining from meat, remember that

the Stations of the Cross are a great Friday

Lenten tradition.
