Bearing message of love
TC261109GJ03‘CARE BEARS’: Jackie Grinder with some of her reconditioned bears ready for sending to sick and traumatisedchildren.
BY GRANT JOHNSTON
Jackie Grinder recyclesteddy bears and sends themoff to comfort sick andtraumatised children.
She sews two sets of newclothes and a backpack foreach bear (‘because the setof clothes they are not wear-ing has to go somewhere’)and in the three years shehas been doing her volun-tary labour of love she hasoutfitted 70 bears.
It started three years agowhen a friend’s nine-month-old grandson was diagnosedwith leukaemia and shewanted to do something tocomfort him — of course itmade sense to provide onefor the sibling as well.
With their spruce upwash, natty new clothes andbackpack in bright colourswith cheerful animal char-acters on them they were abig hit and Mrs Grinder’shelping habit was hatched.
She makes up batches of10 and sends them wherethey can do most good.Earlier this year a batchwent to Ronald McDonaldHouse in Auckland, whichcaters for seriously ill chil-dren.
Some of them went onwith their new owners toAuckland’s Starship Hos-pital as care for the children
continued.They are so popular Mrs
Grinder is now fieldingregular requests for
reinforcements.She is looking for
donations of pre-loved whiteFarmers bears (which
apparently wash up well). These can be left at Sincer-ity Drycleaners or St John’sChurch office.
Mrs Grinder is hoping toget another batch away intime to provide some Christ-mas cheer.
Debate on climate changefull of ‘myth-information’
Over 90 members and newcomers to TeAwamutu Continuing Education Group weretreated to an enthralling address by Chris deFreitas, on ‘Climatology and our ChangingClimate Patterns’.
Mr de Freitas is Professor of Climatology atAuckland University.
He informed those who attended the recentmeeting at Waipa Workingmen’s Club thatthere is a great deal of misinformation on thissubject, reports Brian Arrandale.
Professor de Freitas said there is also alack of real scientific evidence that man-madeemissions are affecting the world’s atmo-sphere to the extent that is circulated in themedia — also from those organisations whosepolitical ideology is to deal in fear, rather thanon scientific evidence and facts.
He stressed that carbon dioxide is one ofthe greatest assets that mankind enjoys, andthat New Zealand is the only country to inflicta cost on its agriculture for so-called ‘harmfulemissions’ which have been a natural featureof agriculture, and wildlife throughout theworld.
Professor de Freitas told members that ifAl Gore was addressing the meeting hischarge would be over US$123,000 for 35minutes.
During Professor de Freitas’ address, mem-bers gained a fresh scientific insight into theworld’s changing climate, which has been afeature of this planet since its birth, and thatother factors such as the sun, oceans andpolar regions have a greater bearing onclimate than human activity.

Councillor sees improvementsYear two of my time as a Te
Awamutu Ward councillor forWaipa District Council hasbeen a great improvement onyear one.
In Garry Dyet we have a newchief executive officer who hasshown a great ability to under-stand the processes of govern-ance in relation to the electedcouncillors.
His management skills willbe tested over the next year, butI suspect he will be up to thatchallenge.
I initially found myself atodds with a fairly laid backapproach to the finances of theCouncil.
It seemed that as long asCouncil’s financial controllerand the (Audit Office’s) AuditorGeneral gave us a pass mark atthe end of each year, we wereOK.
Of course had he not done so
we, as responsible councillorscould have been in deeptrouble.
The more I looked into thefinances, the more I felt a majoroverhaul was needed.
I’m delighted that our newCEO had taken up this chal-lenge. In doing that he and I areworking to provide some mean-ingful financial indices forcouncillors.
Stacks of financial informa-tion is sometimes difficult tounderstand. I hope we canshrink these ‘stacks’ down intoindices for my colleagues thatwill enable them to have confid-ence that the large organisationwe lead is financially sound.
At the end of the day it is theratepayers who carry the bur-den of bad financial manage-ment.
One area I still find that I’m alone voice is the amount of
money committed to long termplanning.
I’m happy to try and‘estiguess’ the activities for thenext 10 years, but trying tomake binding decisions out to2050 leaves me gasping for air.
Then when we got abudgeted sum of $2.1 million forsuch activities I flipped.
I was a lone voice againstthat motion.
As chair of the Heart of TeAwamutu steering group, Ienjoyed working with my fel-low ward councillors from TeAwamutu in getting agreementfor a modest upgrade of ourgateways and Alexandra Street.
The proposed Heritage andCultural Centre has been at thecore of our long term fundingdebates.
Expenditure of $15 millionhas been approved beginning inthe 2013 year.
I felt we had to get thisproject moving and had Counciltake on board my paperdesigned to make some pro-gress.
We now have a steeringgroup, headed by former Coun-cillor Alan Empson, who willattempt to plan a ‘ConceptDesign’.
The second phase will be toraise the $5 million from theprivate sector.
If we achieve all that, we willbe in a strong position to claimthe other two thirds of the costfrom Council by way of loansand sale of assets.
So I have enjoyed workingwith my co councillors.
We have not always agreed, and if they have found me to bea pain in the backside at times Idon’t apologise, but thank themfor their tolerance.

Orcas seen in Aotea, Kawhia harbours yesterdayA busload of Otorohanga
businessmen had a whale of atale to tell after their tourismfamiliarisation visit to Kawhiayesterday.
While they were visitingKawhia Museum aroundlunchtime, a pod of six-eight orcacavorted up Kawhia Harbour, probably in pursuit of a meal of
stingray. Earlier in the morninga group of Scandinavian touristsspotted the orcas heading out ofAotea Harbour.
There is no record of orcas
attacking humans in the wild, but concern was raised furthernorth earlier this week after alarge orca appeared to zoom inon divers.

Sci fi thriller could launchauthor’s career into orbit
TC261109GJ01WATCH THIS SPACE:author Dennis Pennefather with his latest book ‘TheUnderstanding’.
BY GRANT JOHNSTON
Te Awamutu authorDennis Pennefather isawaiting the first royaltyreport on his new book‘The Understanding’with bated breath.
Mr Pennefather’s firstventure into the sciencefiction genre has beenpublished by EloquentBooks of New York andhas a potentially hugeaudience.
The author will knowin a few weeks whetherthe American readers are‘biting’ when he is able toaccess the first royaltyreport for the book, which was released lastmonth.
Mr Pennefather isalready buoyed by thefact this is his first bookpublished through con-ventional publishing, rather than ‘vanity pub-lishing’.
He drew on personalexperience as a police-man for 25 years for hisfirst two books ‘Con-stable’ and ‘Sergeant’. Heself published these non-fiction books, a numberof which were picked upby libraries around thecountry.
A professionalcaregiver, MrPennefather moved to TeAwamutu from Takapauin central Hawkes Bayfour months ago, for hisfiance to be closer to herfamily in Hamilton.
Hawkes Bayreviewers had this to sayabout his new book: ‘‘TheUnderstanding is firstclass ... very clever ... hadthe feeling of Wyndham’s‘Midwich Cuckoos’ orHuxley’s ‘Brave NewWorld’. Compulsive read-ing and held my interestthroughout.’’ — GraemeCass, Hawkes Bay Today.
‘‘The Understandingis an intelligent and clev-erly thought out storythat centres on the
cloning of humans andthe issues that raises, inan environment wherethe law allows it. It hasthe potential to become acult classic, due to itsfictional originality, subtle wit, cleverlythought out storyline andcompletely ‘off the wall’twist on religion, cloningand the human con-dition.’’ — Simon PearseCHB Mail.
This is the publisher’spre-face: ‘‘The Under-standing interfaces withall the most fantastic, mind bending elementsof science fiction.
‘‘A young teenager
must simultaneouslyconfront the brutal mur-ders of his parents, theexistence of his clone-twin and his cosmicallyvital purpose to trans-form the very evolutionof mankind on Earth.
‘‘Recently orphanedteenage clone AdamNewman is stunned tolearn of his role as theleader of the ‘Jump-Clones’ and their missionto jump dimensions fromhis 2048 home of ‘Earith’to 198,000BC Earth.
‘‘Before he leaves, however, Adam mustlearn the details of pro-ject ‘Multiple Universe’
while defeating a fanat-ical army seeking toabort the dimension-jump.
‘‘There is also thesmall matter of his newlyfound soul-mate Eve,who reminds him ofsomeone extremelyfamiliar.
‘‘The Understandingtakes readers on an out ofthis world journey thatspans time, dimensions, and technology all whiletravelling alongsideAdam on his mission tochange mankind.’’
TheUnderstanding isavailable through allmajor outlets.
Te Awamutu Medical Centrenow closed in weekends
After more than 30 years ofproviding Saturday morning afterhours medical care for emergen-cies, Te Awamutu Medical Centresays it will no longer be able toprovide this service to its 16,500patients.
‘‘It is with great sadness that wehave to announce this change,’’says a press release from theMedical Centre.
It will take effect from begin-ning of December.
This change brings Te Awa-mutu Medical Centre into line withmost other medical centres
throughout the Waikato region. It has come about because of the
increased requirement of thecentre’s general practitioners tocover the Anglesea AfterhoursMedical Centre roster at theweekends in Hamilton, and adecrease in numbers coming intothe practice Saturday mornings.
Patients will need to rememberthat repeat prescriptions and otherdocumentation will need to becollected during normal workinghours of 8am to 5.30pm, Mondays toThursdays and 8am to 5pm onFridays as the Medical Centre will
not be open at all over theweekends.
Te Awamutu Medical Centresome time ago linked up with aNational Nurse Triage Service forits afterhours telephone calls.
This provides callers withexpert medical advice afterhoursand has proven very successful.
‘‘Te Awamutu Medical Centrelooks forward to continuing toproviding quality medical care anda broad range of services to itregistered patients in the greaterTe Awamutu area,’’ says therelease.

That compares toabout 40 sightingsreported in all of 2008.
‘‘Obviously recentpublicity about tui willbe encouraging morepeople to reportsightings, but it seemsclear there are definitelymore of the birds aboutthis year.
‘‘That’s an encourag-ing sign that our Haloproject to controlpossums and rats at tuibreeding sites aroundHamilton is having asolid impact on the num-ber of birds visiting thecity and nearby.’’

Legendary reinsman here for harness on grass
TC261109CT10KIDS KARTZ will be back in action at this year’s Christmas harnessmeeting at Waipa. Some participants warmed up at the recent WaipaRacing Club Christmas meeting (before rain curtailed the pro-gramme). Rachel Clark and Peanut are home for first prize in thisheat.
BY GRANT JOHNSTON
This year’s Christmas harnessmeeting at Waipa Racecourse willsee one of the legends of the the sportback in the sulky.
Peter Wolfenden, who was NewZealand’s premier reinsman duringthe 1960s and 70s will be driving atthe venue where he pilotted his firstwinner in 1956.
‘PT’ Wolfenden was associatedwith immortal Kiwi pacer, CardiganBay, the first pacer to earn a milliondollars in North America. He will bedoing battle at Waipa with last year’sjockeys challenge winner, GaryGrylls, Grylls’ son Craig and fellowTe Awamutu rider Mark Sweeney,
along with commentator and lead-ing amateur driver George Simon.
A collection will be taken for StJohn Ambulance.
After a bumper return to har-ness on the grass at Waipa fouryears ago, the following year sawthe meeting curtailed by a powercut and then last year plagued byheavy downpours — so hopefullythe sun and fate will shine on thisyear’s meeting on Tuesday,December 29.
There is plenty of entertain-ment planned for children, as wellas the popular Kids Kartz races. There are corporate tents avail-able — contact Frank Cooper at871 8975.
Waikato DHB improvessurgery statistics
Waikato District Health Board is on track todeliver better, sooner and more convenienthealthcare according to the elective surgery resultsreleased this week.
Waikato DHB improved access to elective surgeryand achieved a result of 113 per cent in the firstquarter of this financial year (ended September 30),putting it second out of 21 district health boards.
‘‘We are justifiably proud of the improvement inthe amount of elective surgery we performed in thelast year,’’ Health Waikato chief operating officer JanAdams says.
‘‘We made more use of the private sector on ourbehalf and the effort and thought put in by all staffinvolved was impressive.’’
The aim is for New Zealand hospitals to do anaverage of 4000 more elective surgeries every year.
This will mean a decrease in surgery waiting timesand more people getting their surgery when theywant it.
Waikato DHB planned to do 2942 elective surgeriesin the first quarter but delivered 390 more. Lastfinancial year the DHB planned to do 11,991 surgeriesbut did 12,402.
‘‘There will no doubt be many people who are stillwaiting for surgery who read these results and findthem cold comfort.
‘‘We hear from them often and we are listening,’’Mrs Adams says.
‘‘So while we are entitled to feel good about ourperformance, we do so with a sense of determinationthat we can do better.’’

Emergency departmentwaiting times targetted
A stay of less than six hours for95 per cent of patients in Waikatoand Thames hospitals’ emergencydepartments is achievable, sayclinicians at both hospitals.
While Thames is nearly there,Waikato Hospital has some way togo but can do it, says HealthWaikato chief operating officerJan Adams.
‘‘We’re unhappy about wherewe were in September at WaikatoHospital but we’re confident we’llimprove each quarter,’’ she says.
The Ministry of Health thisweek released DHB ranking tablesfor its six health targets for thequarter ended September 30.
One of the targets is that 95 percent of patients are admitted, discharged or transferred fromhospital emergency departmentswithin six hours.
Waikato DHB achieved 67 percent at Waikato and Thameshospitals.
Individually, Thames Hospitalwas 91 per cent on 3241attendances while Waikato Hos-pital had 65 per cent of its 14,028patients admitted, treated ordischarged within six hours.
Emergency departments atWaikato DHB’s rural hospitals inTokoroa (97 per cent with 2310attendances), Taumarunui (99 percent/1198 attendances) and TeKuiti (97 per cent/456attendances), were not included inthe ministry figures.
Thames emergency departmentclinical nurse manager AnneDaniels welcomed the publicationof the figures saying hospitalsneeded measurable targets.
‘‘It’s all about looking at ourprocesses and reducing time wast-
ing,’’ she says.Thames came close to reaching
the target in an environmentwhere emergency departmentattendances were up more than 10per cent.
‘‘I believe we’re nearly there. When we do it, it will be because ofvery good teamwork rightthroughout the hospital,’’ she says.
But there is no quick fix inHamilton, according to WaikatoHospital group manager Dr GrantHoward.
‘‘Waikato Hospital is a bigplace, a tertiary hospital with acomplex system so to improve, andto eliminate waste takes time if itis to be done well,’’ he says.
The department currently seesan average of 150 patients each dayand is the trauma centre for thecentral North Island.
‘‘While not all change isimprovement, we cannot expectimprovement if we do not changewhat we are doing.
‘‘We accept the six-hour is agood thing so long as the focusremains on the patient, and youhave our commitment that it will,’’says Dr Howard.
‘‘We have done better sincethen and on Friday (November 20)got up to 95 per cent during the daybut we still have a long way to go toachieve the target by June 30 nextyear.
‘‘We now have a real-timereport running in the departmentthat colour codes each patientaccording to how long they havebeen waiting so staff can easily seewhich patient is getting close orcrossed the six-hour target.’’
The department also estab-lished a 24-hour short stay unit for
patients that require furtherobservation but not admittance toa ward.
An internal campaign is alsounderway at the hospital toremind staff from other areas thateveryone plays a part.
‘‘It is clear that we need a stagedand sustainable approach involv-ing a whole of hospital response,’’says Dr Howard.
‘‘Every person who works atWaikato Hospital has a vital role toplay.
‘‘From the ED staff working toassess and treat as quickly aspossible to the attendants whomove patients and ward staff thatneed to discharge their patients tothe Transit Lounge and update thesystem to show free beds.
‘‘We all form part of thepatient’s journey and need to worktogether to achieve this target,’’ hesays.
Emergency departments pro-vide acute health care so thetimeliness of treatment delivery(and any time spent waiting) isimportant for patients.
‘‘Long stays and overcrowdingin the emergency departmentaffect patients and the speed withwhich they get care and start theprocess of healing. Neither is it agood and safe environment for ourstaff to work in,’’ says Dr Howard.
A new emergency departmentopens at Waikato Hospital in 2011.While achieving the six-hour tar-get is mainly about systems andclinical resources, the physicalresources to deliver an optimaloutcome are currently less thanideal and a new emergency depart-ment will help in the ongoingachievement of the target.

Volunteering on a highin the Waikato region
More volunteers are helpingout through Volunteering Wai-kato than ever before, accordingto figures released recently.
And in the nine months to theend of September, more peoplevolunteered their help throughthe organisation in the regionthan in the whole of 2008.
Heather Moore, general mana-ger of Volunteering Waikato, saidtheir volunteer numbers, especi-ally in Hamilton, were soaring, after a low of less than 550 for thewhole of 2007.
Miss Moore took over runningthe volunteer organisation inJuly 2007, and since then thenumber of volunteer jobsrecorded by the agency has morethan doubled.
‘‘This year to the end of Sep-tember, we processed 1153 volun-teers through the centre.
‘‘That compares with 765 forthe whole of 2008, and a low of 542for 2007.
‘‘Ten years ago, we had ourbest-ever year, with 1372 volun-teer jobs being recorded, but withthree months of this year still togo I believe we are going to breakthat record easily.’’
Miss Moore said one of themain reasons for the substantialincrease in volunteer numberswas that more large groups weregetting involved in major pro-jects, such as upgrading theRauawaawa Kaumatua Servicespremises in Frankton in Januarythis year.
‘‘We had about 220 volunteersworking on that project, and theydid a great job repainting thebuilding, landscaping thegrounds and doing up the gar-dens,’’ she said.
Miss Moore said volunteernumbers were likely to rise in thenext few months as universityand senior school studentscompleted their year’s studiesand began looking for voluntarywork to help boost their practicalskills and experience, whichwould improve their CVs.
‘‘We’ve also noticed that thereare a lot more people seekingvoluntary work after being maderedundant — they want to beproactive and contribute.
‘‘They choose to make good useof their time, taking on volunteerwork while actively looking forpaid work.’’
Corporate volunteer groupswere also increasing, as businesshouses in Hamilton and else-where recognised the need tocontribute socially to the com-munities they operated in.
She said Volunteering Waikatohad also actively sought to raiseits profile, and more peoplearound the Waikato were nowaware of the organisation andwhat it offered.
The increase in volunteernumbers has meant a decrease involunteer work available throughVolunteering Waikato.
Currently the agency has justover 100 jobs available, wherenormally it carries listings ofabout 140 volunteer positions.
It supplies volunteers to 112community organisations regis-tered with it, mainly from Hamil-ton, but also from Te Awamutu,Cambridge, Huntly, Ngaruawahiaand Raglan.
As well, the organisation isnow helping provide volunteers toother centres in the Waikatothrough its on-line volunteerrecruitment website, which linksvolunteers throughout the regionto organisations seeking help.

Speedway patrons in fortreat at Kihikihi track
TC261109SP24EXPECT plenty of thrilling three-abreast sidecar action, as pictured, inthe Waikato Championships at Kihikihi Speedway on Sunday.
Two very different events willshare title billing for McDonald’sKihikihi Speedway’s third meetingof the season on Sunday.
The host Kihikihi team will dobattle with Taranaki in theStockcar teams race being staged inconjunction with the WaikatoSidecar Championships.
The Stockcar race, sponsored byTe Awamutu Tyre and Tune, will bethe first opportunity for Kihikihi’snew drivers to test their teamsracing skills.
The team will be led by theexperienced duo of 7K IvanLammas and 915K Ray Osborne, with the remaining three spotsexpected to go to new drivers.
Greg Maxted reports that historysuggests Taranaki will start as
favourites, having won mostencounters over the last decade.
Kihikihi will be keen to turn-the-tables in front of their parochialhome track crowd, who will becheering for them in this David vGoliath like battle.
The Sidecars have been absolute-ly loving the super smooth Kihikihiclay this season and should producespectacular racing.
The Waikato Championship, sponsored by Qubik - TMC Ltd, hasattracted 12 entries to date, includ-ing visiting bikes from Auckland,Wanganui, Gisborne and Palmer-ston North.
The appearance of 1NZ LesPlummer/Kervin Demanser of Gis-borne will create considerableinterest.
They are one of the most experi-enced duos in the country, havingwon nearly every title up for grabsdomestically over the past twodecades.
But they have little experienceracing at Kihikihi.
Their biggest threat could be 21AGlenn Murray/Shaun Golding, whohave been performing well at bothKihikihi and Rosebank Road, Avon-dale.
4K Dave Gannon and RaymondGeorge are former winners of thisevent and will be carrying the localhopes after a strong start to theseason.
Superstocks, stockcars, ministocks, saloons, productionsaloons and streetstocks will alsofeature on the day’s programme.
Barrowcliffe inbrilliant form
Nick Barrowcliffe headed some hot scoring witha whopping 29 stableford in Pirongia Golf Club’stwilight tournament sponsored by McFall Fuel.
Barrowcliffe was three points clear of his nearestrival, Steve Meddings, on the back nine holes. Othernotable scorers were G. Tocker, D. Livingstone, D.Matson with 23 points and G. Livingston 22.
Jason Kraayvanger headed the men on the frontnine with 24 points, from J. Dunn, R. Picken on 23and D. Peryer, K. Bardsley, H. Sunnex on 22.
Denise Goile topped the ladies field with 22points, from A. O’Halloran 20 and J. Wolff, L.Stockdale on 19.
Barrowcliffe was back in the winner’s circleagain this week after accumulating 25 stableford totake out the twilight tournament sponsored by KiwiPies.
Other players to score over 20 points were D.Kidd, R. Davies, H. Oosterman, B. Fordham 24, D.Grantham 23, J. Creek, D. Peryer, K. Appleby 22, P.McFarlane, N. Nelson, P. Morris, Jim Dunn, G.Watts, Bob Coleman, J. Kraayvanger, I. Grey 21, J.Stokes, M. Kirk, K. Bardsley, W. Murrell, A.Johnston, M. Caie and D. Solomon 20.
Morriss, Davytop combo
Ken Morriss and Vi Davy came from the brink ofdefeat to snatch a thrilling victory in the mixedpairs championship final at Kihikihi Bowling Club.
The pendulum swung back and forth as fortunesfluctuated throughout the match against Dave andOlga Barnes.
Having conceded a three on the opening end, theBarnes strung together a 3, 2, 1 to lead 6-3 after fourends.
Morris and Davey upped the ante with a 1, 2, 2, 1to hit the front, 9-6, after eight ends.
Four shots on ends nine and 10 had the Barnesleading 10-9, only to concede a three and the lead onthe very next end.
Trailing 12-10, the Barnes scored four shots onend 12 and two on the 13th to lead 16-12 with twoends remaining.
But the never say die Morriss/Davy team wereequal to the challenge, picking up the necessary fiveshots (3, 2) to sneak home 17-16.
In the earlier rounds, Morriss and Daveyeliminated fellow one-lifers Dan and Gael Connolly13-10, then took a life off the Barnes’ in the semi-final, winning that match 15-12 after trailing 12-11with two ends to play.
The women’s junior pairs was won by ChrisWatkinson and Vi Davy with two straight gamesvictories, 21-3, 16-8, over Joy Allen and GaelConnolly.

Rowers no doubt can-not wait to get thecyclists out on the waterfor similar revenge afterbeing scuttled in theMaunga 100km Classiccycle challenge.

Chuganaut playing here
TC261109SP34EARLIER this year Chuganaut was opening for Iron Maiden. Next Saturday they play the Ale House forAleFest. Te Awamutu guitarist Nail says its been a busy schedule since playing at Mount Smart, including doing shows around the country with comedian Jan Maree for a change of pace. Soon theboys plan to take some ‘family time out’ but before then they will rock the Ale House.
Show didn’t go on
261109SP35STAR Glen Campbell and Nick Douch.
Glen Campbell’s showin Rotorua last Saturdaymight not have goneentirely to plan but it stillhad some lasting positiveeffect for some Child Can-cer Foundation familieswho attended. So saysNick Douch, co-organiserfor the Fill The HouseTickets Project.
The project, whichsources tickets to showsto give Child CancerFoundation families somewelcome time out fromthe stresses of dealingwith a sick child, wasfortunate enough toobtain some tickets to theGlen Campbell shows inboth Auckland and Roto-rua.
CCF folks who saw theAuckland show said itwas awesome.
Says Nick ‘It was sadthat the Rotorua showcouldn’t continue but MrCampbell’s voice was justgetting worse as timewent on. I met him aboutan hour before the showand although he was a bitcroaky he still wanted todo the best by his fans.
When he came on stagehis voice had deterioratedconsiderably from when Ihad last spoken to him. Heran through Gentle On MyMind and tried a couple ofother numbers but it wasobvious that he washaving great difficulty. He went off and a memberof the audienceapproached the stage andsuggested that Mr Camp-bell come out and play thesongs and the audiencecould sing them.
Mr Campbell’s twodaughters who were ontour with him both playedand sang some numberswhile he was composinghimself and he came backand tried leading thecrowd participation buthe was obviously quitedistressed.
He played the theme toThe Lone Ranger and thathad the crowd rocking. His skill as a guitar playeris well recognised and hewas magic to watch. Many folks when they getolder start to have diffi-culty getting their fingersaround a fret board but heis as supple now as he was30 years ago — absolutelybrilliant!’’
One of our CCF famil-
ies summed it up for mewhen the concert wascalled off. ‘‘We were justhappy to see the man inthe flesh. Ken Loach’s latest film, starring football star Eric Cantona, is funny,
tender, surprising and very wise. A film of three halves, each almost a genre
unto itself, but ultimately satisfying. It’s a British film that lifts the spirits and might even bring a tear to the eye.
Loach has scored a winner.
