O ver the 33 years I’vebeen a Retirementand Estate PlanningSpecialist, most of myprospects, before becomingmy clients, asked me the ques-tion: “Where is your portfolioinvested?” It has been by farthe most frequently askedquestion of me but, it reallywasn’t what these peoplewanted to know. The dis-guised question was simply:“Do you actually own whatyou are attempting to sell metoday?” More simply stated,“Do you own what you sell?”Proudly, I would answer, yes Ido, if I didn’t, then you would

refer to me as a “professionalhypocrite!” Whether a lifeinsurance policy, an annuity, mutual funds or disabilityinsurance, I became my ownclient and am thrilled that Itook my own advice.

I profess that everyone, during their working years, purchase a life insurance poli-cy and a disability policywhile simultaneously invest-ing money systematically intoquality stock mutual funds, both foreign and domestic. The addition of a variableannuity allows for tax-deferralof any growth realized in thecontract; while the mutualfunds though currently tax-able, are reachable without agovernment penalty prior toage 59 ½ for a home purchase,

an emergency need or a newcar. In my case those fundswere needed for my first homepurchase, cars and baby needs

as our family grew to 4 chil-dren. I started accounts foreach of our kids shortly aftertheir birth to accumulate forcollege, a car for them and fortheir retirement plans. Whilestill working I am funding allof their accounts and theretirement accounts for my

wife and I. However, should Ibecome disabled or die, insur-ance would swoop-in and savethe day and my family fromfinancial ruin. Every month Icontinue to fund my mutualfunds and annuities, my IRA’sand my personal pensionplans.

I both preach and prac-tice living below my means tohave the financial resources tobuild and grow our money.

Over the three decades thathave passed since my enteringthis industry, I’ve had to usesome of the products I sold

myself, like health insuranceand the mutual funds I invest-ed in to pay for my two olderchildren’s college expensestaking absolutely no loans intheir names or mine. Themutual funds continued togrow over the contributions soI had the opportunity to with-

draw again to purchase a sec-ond home, then a third andmore, all with no mortgages. My Simplified EmployeePension Plan (SEP) annuitieshave grown to the point nowthat they can support us dur-ing our retirement. When Idie, there will be additionallife insurance dollars to guar-antee my wife’s solvency andcontinue to leave a bequestand legacy for our children.

My wife and I have prac-ticed what we preached forover thirty years, utilizing theidentical plans, programs,

policies and strategies that weprofessed and marketed to ourprospects and clients of theday, of the month’s, of theyear’s and over the decade’sthat have gone by. As newand improved innovationspresented themselves, it wasincumbent upon me to inform

my clients that an opportuni-ty for upgrading was availableand in addition to myself andfamily, they should upgradetoo!

These are the things thata well-versed, competent, pro-fessional financial advisordoes for his clients and if yourfinancial planner is not work-ing for you to this end, per-haps a change is in order.Does he or she practice what

they preach and teach? It is agreat question that in myopinion needs to be asked andthe answer given to you by

your financial advisor.A few years ago, I almost

had to test my planning tech-niques by my wife potentiallyfiling a claim with my lifeinsurance carriers; I qualifiedto receive payments on thedisability policies too. Further,my designees required theusage of 3 legal documents myestate planning attorney pre-pared, the Health Proxy, thePower of Attorney and theLiving Will! Fortunately, everything and everyone wasprepared and empowered toact on my behalf and with thefinancial resources to do so. Irecovered from my cardiac

ordeal to write this columntoday, five years later. Likepracticing a “fire drill” that wehope will never be needed, each of us must be preparedfor some bad news down theroad and what is becoming aneven bigger bout, the longevi-ty game. Did you realize thatyou might outlive your moneyand resources? There is littlefear of that in my case and thefamilies I serve because of theinnovative products andopportunities available in themarketplace today. If yourportfolio does not enjoy thesame protection, perhaps youshould call me to discuss it! Itmight only be a few minorportfolio carburetor adjust-ments or you might require amajor revamping of every-

thing, regardless, the examshould be taken, just like thefire drills you ran as a child inschool.

Many families havetheir own routineson weeknights. Kidsmay tackle their homeworkbefore dinner, and once every-one’s plate is clean, familymembers may spend timetogether or go their separateways, spending time onlinewith friends or watching theirfavorite television programs onthe couch.

Parents who feel theirweeknights don’t includeenough family time are oftenon the hunt for more family-friendly activities the wholefamily can enjoy even if every-one has to go to work or schoolthe next day. The following area handful of family-friendlyweeknight activities that can

bring families closer together.Movie night: Familymovie night is a tradition formany families, and parents whowant to spend more timetogether as families may findthat movie night is a great wayto share a few laughs or evenfacilitate discussions aboutimportant topics broached incertain films. Each week let adifferent family member pickthat week’s movie and ask himor her to explain his or her

choice and why they think it’sa film the whole family willenjoy. Let the kids join you asyou get the popcorn ready ormake special treats to enjoywhile the movie is playing.

Family walk: Walking is agreat way for parents to instill alove of physical activity in theirchildren, and nightly walksalso make great opportunitiesfor families to leave theirdevices behind and discuss thegoings-on in their lives.Weather permitting, take afamily walk after dinner eachnight, which can help makeyour family healthier andstrengthen the bonds betweenfamily members.

Writing activities: An-other way families can escape

their devices and resist thetemptation of social media onweeknights is to get togetherfor weekly writing sessions. Askeach family member to createbrief lists on a range of topics, whether it’s a list of favoritebooks or countries each personwants to visit or a bucket list of things each family memberwants to do at one point intheir lives. Allow about 15minutes for each person towrite his or her lists, and then

discuss each person’s list, including the inspirationbehind each item that made itonto the lists.

Game night: Classicboard games or games likecheckers might not be as popu-

lar today as they were prior tothe advent of the Internet, butthat does not mean a nightcentered around such gamesdoes not still make for a veryfamily-friendly evening. Stockup on some classic board gamesand share the responsibility of choosing which game to playeach week. Board games cantake up to a few hours to play, and that’s a great opportunityfor families to share somelaughs without being interrupt-

ed by their devices.Craft night: Arts and

crafts night is another greatway for families to spend timetogether. Parents can chooseage-appropriate projects that

can help kids and adults aliketap into their creative sides.Solicit ideas when planningcraft night so everyone feelslike they played their part.

    Nights together as a fami-

ly do not need to be limited toweekends. Parents willing to geta little creative can enjoy fami-ly-friendly evenings no matterwhat day it happens to be.

Weeknight activities the whole family can enjoy

Brought to you byDr. Matthew Krupnick, the owner of Pequannock

    Animal Hospital

Many trainers and vet-erinarians recom-mend that dog own-ers buy dog crates as soon aspossible after buying or adopt-ing a dog. Apet owner’s choiceof crate can go a long waytoward ensuring the dog reactspositively to the crate.

The Association of Professional Dog Trainers rec-ommends the use of crates forpuppies and dogs as a short-term training tool and as a safe-ty precaution throughout thedog’s life. Crates can be invalu-able in house training youngdogs and helping to curtaildestructive behavior, such aschewing. As more people trav-

el with their pets, crates alsoprovide a safe and convenientconfinement option in the car,on an airplane and in pet-friendly hotel rooms.

Crates also offer a cozyspot dogs can call their own.Crates can feed dogs’ need forsecurity. When used correctly, and not as punishment for adog, crates can serve as com-forting retreats for dogs whenthey need alone time.

Where to buy?Crates can be purchased

at most pet supply retailers, andthey also are available at manydepartment stores, hardwarestores and online retailers.

Pet owners who desire certainmaterials or have specialrequirements of their dog cratesprobably can find the biggestselection at pet supply stores.

What size to get?It is important to consider

the size of the dog when pur-chasing a crate. The crateshouldn’t be too big nor toosmall. Choose a crate in whichthe dog can sit up straight with-out banging its head on the topof the crate. Dogs also shouldbe able to turn around withease and lie down on their sideswith paws extended.

Many pet owners makethe mistake of getting a larger

crate than is necessary. Dogs donot like to soil in their sleepingareas, but crates that are toolarge may encourage poochesto use one end as a bathroomand the other as a sleepingarea, and ultimately that canmake dogs less enthusiasticabout crates. Also, crates thatare too large will not providethe feeling of security dogscrave.

According to LabradorTraining HQ, measure the dogwhile he is standing uprightfrom nose to the base of thetail. Add five to six inches tothis measurement, and thatwill be an ideal length for thecrate. Also measure the dog

while he is sitting upright.Again, add a few inches to themeasurement, and this will bethe minimum height of thecrate.

What about a growing puppy? Some owners prefer to

upgrade crates as their dogsgrow. Budget-conscious petowners can buy a larger crateand then use a divider to size itdown for puppy use. Thedivider can be moved as neces-sary when the puppy grows.

What are the different crate materials?

Crates come in plastic, metal wire, wood, and nylon or

another fabric material. Eachhas its own share of advantagesand disadvantages. Wire cratesare what many people envisionin a crate, and such crates areamong the most popularbecause they provide ventila-tion, an easily cleaned floortray, folding capabilities, andvisibility for the dog. However, some dog owners feel wirecrates bear too close a resem-blance to cages.

Fabric crates can be cozyand light, but dogs that areprone to scratching and tearingmay be able to escape themeasily. Plastic crates can bemore private, and wood crates

can be customized to fit withthe décor of the house.

Pet owners should shoparound to find which crate best

fits the needs of their dogs. If crates will remain in the home,a more attractive crate may bea priority. If the crate will beused for travel, somethinglighter and more portable maybe the best fit.

Crates can be handy toolsfor dog owners, as crates pro-

vide a safe environment fordogs when owners aren’t homeand can make great places fordogs to curl up in when theyneed a break from stimulation.

Crates also are handy for travel. For more information on theright crate, speak with a vet orconsult with employees of a pet supply retailer.

tion. Grubs are a type of pest

that can cause considerabledamage to lawns, and whilemany homeowners have nodoubt heard of grubs, theymight want to learn moreabout these pesky pests sothey know what to do should

    grubs ever appear in theiryards.

What are grubs?Grubs are insects that

live in the soil, where theyfeed on grass and roots. Manygrubs are the larva of Japanesebeetles, and those beetles typ-

ically lay their eggs in sun-drenched areas of lawns in

    midsummer.

What are si gns of grub dam-age?

Grubs not only damagelawns on their own, but theyserve as food sources for local

wildlife as well, attractingwildlife, which can do its own

damage to lawns.Lawns can turn brownfor a variety of reasons, andgrubs are just one of manypotential culprits behind thebrowning of once-lusciouslandscapes. Grubs feed on

roots, so homeowners whosuspect their lawns have fallen

victim to grub infestations canpull up the areas where grasshas turned brown to see if there are any grubs, whichlook like worms.

    Landscapes that havesuddenly become popular

among local wildlife that isdigging up lawns may also be

infested with grubs. Skunksand raccoons feed on grubs, and may dig up lawns wheregrubs are present.

Damage resulting fromgrub infestation is most visible

from late summer to early fall.

    Can grub damage be prevent-ed?

Preventing grub infesta-tion typically requires home-owners to keep watchful eyeson their lawns. Pay particularattention to areas that beginto brown, especially areas thatare turning brown in spite of

adequate watering. An earlyindicator of a grub infestationis small grubs around the rootsof grass. In such instances, applying insecticide may beenough to prevent a smallgrub problem from spreading.

Insecticides also can bean effective preventativemeasure for homeownerslooking to avoid grub infesta-tions. Speak with a local land-scaping professional for rec-ommendations about whichinsecticide to apply and howbest to apply it.

What can I do about grubdamage?

Attempting to treatgrubs in the spring may beineffective, as grubs are largeand no longer feeding inspring. So homeowners deal-ing with grub infestationsshould address the situationbefore they retire their greenthumbs for the winter.Remove debris from grub

infestations with a rake beforewatering the affected areas.Watering can help some dam-aged roots recover, but areasthat have been especiallydamaged may need to bereseeded.

Grub infestations can bea nuisance to homeownerswho put lots of time and effortinto their lawns. But home-owners can take steps to treatsuch infestations and preventthem from returning the fol-lowing summer.

After you file your2014 tax return, you

may want to forgetabout taxes for a while. Butperhaps you should takeadvantage of your currentfamiliarity with your finan-cial situation instead. By act-ing now, you can make nextyear’s return less taxing.

    Here are suggestions.Check your withholding

    for 2015. The best indicator

that you need to change yourwithholding is the bottomline on your 2014 tax return.A large refund means you’vegiven the IRS an interest-free loan — money you couldhave invested yourself. Alarge balance due can mean

you end up paying penaltyand interest charges on top

of your regular tax liability. To change your withholding, give your employer an updat-ed Form W-4. If you’re newlyretired, you may need to startmaking quarterly estimatedtax payments.

Maximize the benefityou get from tax-deductiblecontributions to a retirementplan by making your 2015contribution as early in the

year as possible. This extendsthe time your account cangrow tax-deferred.

Establish your long-termtax planning strategies.Possibilities to consider: asalary-deferral arrangementwith your employer, invest-

ing in assets that will appre-ciate rather than produce

current income, shiftingincome among family mem-bers to take advantage of lower tax brackets, and struc-turing your borrowing tomaximize interest deduc-tions.

Get your tax and finan-cial records organized. Asimple system to track andstore electronic or paperrecords will save you from

the last-minute scramble topull your information togeth-er. An added benefit: You’llbe less likely to miss avail-able deductions.
