Presidents Day is anAmerican holiday that iscelebrated each year on thethird Monday in February. Schoolchildren typically get the day off from school and many profession-als also get the day off from work.
Established in 1800,Presidents Day once went by a
different name. Known asWashingtons Birthday, which isstill the legal name of the holiday,
this day was meant to celebratethe first President of the UnitedStates, George Washington, whose birthday was February 22.Congress declared that day a fed-eral holiday more than 200 years
ago, and eventually the holidaygrew to become a celebration of President Abraham Lincoln, whowas born on February 12, as well. The holiday is now a celebrationof the lives and accomplishments
of every U.S. president.Few Americans would behard-pressed to identify GeorgeWashingtons visage, which isdepicted on some American cur-rency, including the $1 bill. Bornin 1732 to Virginia planters,Washingtons interests includedwestern expansion, which he wasable to take part as a teenager, helping to survey the Shenandoahlands at the age of 16.
Washington was also interested inmilitary arts, and he was commis-sioned a lieutenant colonel in1754, eventually playing a role inwhat became the French andIndian War.
In 1759, Washington wasserving in the Virginia House of Burgesses, an assembly of electedrepresentatives of the Englishcolonies in North America.Growing frustrated with, and feel-
ing exploited by, British regula-tions, Washington voiced hisresistance to restrictions placedon colonists, who were movingtoward what would become theAmerican Revolution.
At the Second ContinentalCongress, which assembled in1775, Washington was electedCommander-in-Chief of theContinental Army, taking com-mand of troops at Cambridge,
Massachusetts on July 3, 1775.Under Washingtons com-mand, the Continental Armywould ultimately succeed, win-ning the colonists their independ-

ence from British rule.In 1787, Washington
presided over the Constitu-tional Convention in
Philadelphia, where the newConstitution was ratified.Within two years Washingtonwas unanimously elected as
the first President of theUnited States.
Though the current two-term limit was not law at theend of Washingtons secondterm, he chose to retire fromthe Presidency anyway, leav-ing office in 1797. He wouldretire to his Virginia home at
Mount Vernon, where he stillengaged in various businessdealings. Within three years of
his retirement, however,Washington would fall ill of athroat infection that ultimate-ly took his life on December14, 1799.
In addition to providingthe inspiration for PresidentsDay, Washingtons legacy isthat of a hero who led an army
of colonists to a victory over adominant empire.
The Washington Monu-ment and Mount Rushmoreare two of the more notablemonuments honoring the firstPresident of the United States. In addition, the nations capi-tal of Washington, D.C. is so
named in honor of GeorgeWashington.
Dentin, as dis-cussed in thefirst part of thisseries, is a unique layer
of the tooth. It is madeup of tiny tubes (denti-nal tubules) that gofrom the inside of thetooth, the nerve (pulp),to the outside (enam-el). It is from thesetubules that the toothhas sensitivity.
Various stimuli(sensations) move thefluid in the tubules
inwardly or outwardly. The movement of thedentinal fluid activatesthe nerve endings at thepulp/dentin junction, whichcauses the pain. Anythingthat increases fluid movementin the tubules or softens thedentin increases sensitivity.
Very strong brushing andgum recession were two rea-sons for dentin hypersensitivi-
ty. Gum recession can becaused by over-brushing,tooth grinding/clenching
(bruxism), and gum disease.Poor oral hygiene leads tomany problems. The plaque(bacteria) left around yourteeth from poor oral hygieneand infrequent dental clean-ings produces acids, whichcause decay, gum recession, and dentin hypersensitivity.
Dental erosion can becaused by diet, medications, drugs, dry mouth, reflux, or
stomach acids. Thisexposes dentin and canlead to severe toothwear when combined
with clenching orgrinding. Read alllabels of food anddrinks for contents of harmful acids, such ascitric and benzoicacids. Combing thesewith sugar can do irre-versible damage.
Tooth-whiteningacts by applying hydro-gen peroxide in over-
the-counter or pre-scription doses fromyour dentist. It pene-
trates the enamel and removesstains. If the enamel is erodedor missing, the peroxide cancause pain. Over tooth-whitening actually is dehy-drating (drying out andremoving the fluids in thetubules) the tooth and canirreversibly damage the nerve
of the tooth. This is why I insist onmonitoring all patients who
have their teeth whitened. There are many products, especially Colgate ProRelief toothpaste, and prescriptionfluorides that can treat dentinhypersensitivity.
Part three will deal withpulp damage to the tooth andits symptoms, prevention, andtreatment.

T he elderly are at risk fordepression and areunderserved by themental health profession. Many are resistant to treatmentbecause they equate depressionwith weakness or death. Hereare some coping strategies foryou and your loved one:1.
Recognize that depression isan illness. Family membersshould be aware of the disabili-ty that depression can causeand should avoid makingdepressed parents or relativesfeel guilty by telling them to getout more or pull themselves upby the bootstraps. Depression isan illness and can become quitedebilitating if left untreated.
2.Dont dismiss symptoms. If your loved one is not eating formore than a few days, or losesinterest in activities they usedto love for more than twoweeks, it could be signs of depression. Unexplained cry-ing, sadness that lasts forextended periods and social
withdrawal are other signs.3.Talk about how they feel.Instead of plunging directlyinto a tough discussion abouttreatment, try asking whatsgoing on. Ive noticed youhavent been sleeping well. Or
You seem so sad lately. Youdont seem like yourself. Usinggentle probing will not instant-ly put the elder on the defen-sive.
4.Allow them to remain inde-pendent. Do not take overdoing tasks for them that they
can do for themselves. Doingthings for a depressed persononly reinforces their perceptionthat they are worthless andincapable.
5.Seek professional help. If they are resistant to help, tell
their doctor your concerns andbehaviors youve noticed.Older people are sometimes lessresistant and more willing tolisten to a doctor.
6.Be involved in the treat-ment. Get your relative to goon outings with you or go backto an activity that he or sheonce enjoyed. Encourage themto be active and busy, but not totake on too much at one time.

Eco-friendly lifestylesarent just for adults.Encouraging kids to gogreen at a young age can setthem up for a lifetime of mak-ing decisions with the envi-ronment in mind. The follow-ing are just a few ways parentscan impart a sense of respon-sibility to the environment ontheir youngsters.Lead by example. Many kidstry to mimic their parentsbehaviors, and moms anddads can take advantage of that by making sure kids seethem as they recycle, con-serve water or make othereco-conscious choices. If kidswant to know why youre sep-arating trash or opting for tapwater over bottled water, explain to them the positiveimpact that such behaviorscan have on the health of theplanet.Encourage eco-friendly hob-bies. Todays youngsters havea host of technology at theirdisposal, and parents knowfull well that such access canbe both good and bad. Whiletechnology can enhancelearning in the classroom andbeyond, gaming systems andother electronic devices havemade it easy for kids to forgooutdoor activities in favor of more sedentary hobbies. Many medical researchersbelieve that such hobbies arecontributing to higher rates of childhood obesity. But theyalso can harm the environ-ment. Gaming systems, whether played on televi-
sions, computers or handhelddevices, use a substantialamount of energy. Parentswho encourage more eco-friendly activities, such asreading or playing outside, can get the best of bothworlds, as kids will be gettingout and about and embracingactivities that dont harm theplanet.Ride bicycles more often.
Reducing fuel consumption isone of the most effective waysto reduce your carbon foot-
print, and even though kidscant drive, that doesnt meanthey cant pitch in to con-serve fuel. Children whoattend school close to homecan ride their bikes ratherthan taking the bus or hitch-ing a ride with mom or dad.Explain to youngsters theimpact that such a choice canhave on the environment, and ride bikes with your kidswhenever possible, be it ontrips to the park or to visitfriends and family members. Many kids love to ride theirbikes, and they might like iteven more if they understandthe positive impact that sucha hobby is having on theirplanet.Teach kids to reuse products.Waste is a significant environ-mental issue, but reusing prod-
ucts is a great way to cut backon waste. Items that wouldonce be tossed into the trashafter serving their purpose canbe repurposed when tacklingprojects around the house, and kids can get in on the act, too. Rather than purchasingstore-bought decorations forholidays like Halloween orChanukah and Christmas, reuse old products to crafthomemade decorations.Birthday gifts or itemsexchanged during the holi-days can be wrapped in oldnewspaper instead of store-bought wrapping paper. Manyproducts that would otherwisebe discarded can be reused, and kids might enjoy findingnew ways to make use of olditems.

Since the economicdownturn that began in2008, many men andwomen have placed a greateremphasis on saving money.
Downsizing a home or tradingin that gas guzzler in the drive-way for a more fuel efficientvehicle are two major ways tosave money, but there are many
less drastic choices men andwomen can make that not onlysave money but also might justsave the planet along the way.
The desire to be more
eco-conscious is strong in manypeople, who recognize theresponsibility they have to pro-tect the planet for future gener-ations. But while incentivesmay not be necessary to enticepeople to be more eco-friendly,there are many ways men andwomen can go green and savemoney at the same time.Eat in. Dining out on the
town can make for a wonderfulevening. But when dining out, diners are often at the mercy of restaurant owners and chefswith respect to the ingredientsin their foods. Restaurants cancut corners by ordering lessexpensive ingredients thatmight be processed or producedfar away, which means theymust be packaged and trans-
ported before they inevitablyfind their way onto your plate.Packaging and transportingproducts from afar is not veryfriendly to the environment. When eating in, men andwomen have a greater amountof control as to what goes intotheir meals, allowing them tochoose locally produced foodsand ingredients that did notleave as big a carbon footprintas foods produced in distantlocales. And dining is nearlyalways less expensive than din-ing out at restaurants, wherethe costs of buying and ship-ping ingredients are passed onto diners.Borrow and let borrow. Thedays of yore when neighborsused to drop by and borrow apower tool or a cooking dishare largely a thing of the past. But borrowing has its benefits, both for your bottom line andfor the planet you call home. If youre friendly with your neigh-bors, dont be afraid to let themborrow your tools, letting them

know that borrowing is botheco-friendly and cost-effective.Many power tools spend thevast majority of time sitting ona shelf in the garage or a back-yard shed, so lending suchitems out to friends or familymembers is a good way to getthe most of your investment. If you share your tools withneighbors, friends or familymembers dont be afraid to bor-row items from them. Youllsave money on items you onlyneed once in a blue moon, andby doing so, you will be reduc-ing reliance on the resources
needed to create such productsby lessening consumer demand.Get your hands dirty. Theproduce aisle at the local gro-cery store may not be bustingyour budget, but that does notmean you should just fork overyour money for your favoritefruits and vegetables when itsso easy and rewarding to plantand grow your own garden.Organic vegetables tend to bemore expensive at many gro-cery stores, but you can growyour own organic produce athome, saving money andreducing reliance on harmfulpesticides at the same time.
Turn in your tech products. As technology becomes a big-ger part of our lives, more andmore products we no longer useare piling up in closets, storagebins and desk drawers. But suchitems can be recycled, and youcan even get paid to recyclethem. For example, the Website Gazelle.com buys usedsmartphones, cell phones, tablets, mp3 players, and other
gadgets, allowing techies witholder products they no longeruse to turn their clutter intocash, all the while benefittingthe environment.
Many people resolve toadopt more eco-friendlylifestyles without expectingmuch in return. But there arefinancial benefits to protectingthe planet.

O wning a pet is often arewarding responsi-bility. Pets make forloyal friends, and for everylate night walk in the cold petowners must endure, their petsrepay those gestures in spades.
While the greatestresponsibility pet owners haveto their pets is to ensure theirfurry friends live as comfort-ably and healthily a life as pos-sible, pet owners also have aresponsibility to the planet.Eco-conscious pet ownershipcan have a positive and sub-stantial impact on the envi-ronment, and the followingare a few simple ways for petowners to care for their petsand protect the planet at thesame time.
Say so long to plasticbags. Picking up pet waste isarguably the worst part of owning a pet, and some petowners simply want to pick upthe waste without giving it asecond thought. But how petowners pick up their petswaste can impact the environ-
ment. Using plastic grocerybags leftover from trips to thestore is bad for the planet, asresearch has shown that suchbags can take as long as 1,000years to degrade. That meansthat plastic bag full of petwaste might still be aroundcome the dawn of the nextmillennium. Instead of usingplastic bags to pick up theirpets waste, pet owners can usebiodegradable waste bagsmade from materials otherthan plastic. Such bags mightnot make the task of pickingup pet waste more enjoyable, but they are certainly moreeco-friendly, taking far lesstime to degrade than plasticbags.
Embrace organic petfoods. Pet foods have evolvedconsiderably over the last sev-eral decades, and pet ownersnow have more healthyoptions at their disposal.Organic pet foods make forhealthier alternatives for pets, eliminating the buildup of residues of chemical additives,
pesticides, fertilizers and her-bicides in pets. Such residueshave been shown to have anadverse effect on pet health. In addition, a study funded bythe European Union foundthat organic fruits and vegeta-bles have up to 40 percentmore antioxidants than non-organic alternatives, adding tothe nutritional value of organ-ic pet foods. Organic pet foodsalso are produced without theuse of conventional pesticidesor artificial fertilizers, benefit-ing the planet as a result. Before altering their pets
diets, pet owners should con-sult their veterinarian foradvice and tips on how tomake the transition from tra-ditional foods to organic alter-natives as smooth as possible.
Look for products madefrom recycled materials. Moreand more pet products arebeing made from recycledmaterials, and pet owners canencourage manufacturers tokeep that trend going strongby purchasing such productswhenever the opportunity todo so presents itself. Leashes, bowls, toys and scratching
posts for cats are just afew of the many petproducts made fromrecycled materials. Before buying pet prod-ucts, pet owners shouldread labels to determineif a given product ismade from recycledmaterials.
Clean green. Like theirhuman counterparts, petsneed to bathe. While theymight not bathe every day liketheir owners, pets such as catsand dogs need to be sham-pooed and cleaned every sooften. When buying cleaningproducts, pet owners shouldlook for nontoxic products. Many traditional pet sham-poos or pet beauty productsare laced with chemicals, andsuch ingredients can have anadverse effect on pet healthwhile also harming the envi-ronment. Nontoxic groomingproducts can still give petscoats a beautiful shine, butthey do so without taking atoll on the planet or the ani-

the United States are notrequired to label foods toindicate use of GMOs. It issafe to assume that corn andsoybeans produced in the
United States are geneticallymodified. Papayas are oftenmodified as well. Producethat has been geneticallymodified will have a bar codethat starts with the digit 8.
One way to avoid GMOs is tobuy only organic foods, which, in many instances, areGMO-free thanks to strin-gent regulations. In terms of other foods, it very well may
be a guessing game. Speakingwith a brands customer serv-ice department may be thebest way to learn if they offerany GMO-free products.

Youll love followingthe little mermaid, who in this brand-new version is a strong-willed but endearing innocenton her first journey to the topof the sea. There she meetsthe painfully shy but funnyOllie, reluctantly training tobe king not exactly heridea of a storybook prince!
Their ensuing friendshipis the special and perceptivecore of the play.

Creative and colorfulstaging, coupled with theauthors unique wit, have puta contemporary spin on theAndersen original, removingthe Victorian heaviness with-out reducing the storyscharm. Both wise and funny
in equal proportions, this newtelling of The LittleMermaid will appeal to allaudiences.
