    People rely on fire and

    smoke detectors to help

    keep them safe in their

    homes. Though fire and smoke

alarms are effective, a firm fire

safety plan that will keep every-

one calm should a fire occur

could mean the differencebetween life and death.

    The U.S. Fire Administra-

tion says that more than 3,500

Americans die each year in fires,

    while roughly 18,300 more men,

    women, and children are injured

    each year. Cooking accounts for

    the greatest percentage of resi-

    dential fires, followed by arson.

Dryer vent fires are also a big

    concern. FEMA says that smoke,

rather than the fires flames, isresponsible for 75 percent of all

    deaths by fire.

    In addition to physical

    injury and material damage, fires

can cause a host of other prob-

    lems. Psychological distress,

    monetary damages, and loss of

pets may come with fires. Loss of

    irreplaceable personal items is

    also a concern. Although fires

    can be devastating, they're

    also highly preventable, and

smoke alarms and a home fire

    safety plan are two precaution-

    ary measures everyone should

    take.Creating an evacuation plan

    doesn't have to be complicat-

ed. Such a plan can be estab-

lished in a few minutes and

    then reinforced through prac-

tice every so often to keep

everyone fresh on what to do.

Begin by assessing the layout of

the home. Figure out the two

    best exits from the home.

If your home doesnt have two

doors, invest in a fire ladder sothat one of the windows can be a

    point of exit.

Know how to gain access to the

exits, including the best path to

take to avoid injury. Its a good

idea to consider a few different

    scenarios. A kitchen adjacent to

    the upstairs staircase may

    become engulfed in flames and

make exit by way of staircase

    impossible. Just because you

have doors to the outside doesn't

mean they'll present the besttype of exit.

Sketch out the layout of the

    home and the escape plan.

Smoke can make it difficult to

know up from down. Be sure

    everyone can reach the exits

even if vision is obstructed. Try

    it with your eyes closed.

    Check fire alarms routinely,

    and change batteries at least

    every year.

Make sure windows can be eas-

ily opened if they are an exitpoint.

Make note of who will be help-

ing children or the elderly out of

    the home.

    Establish a place where the

    family will meet outdoors. This

area should be far enough away

Establish a home fire safety plan

Keeping family members safe from fire involves establishing a fire safety plan.

If you dont have an IRA, I

can only think of a few rea-

    sons why you dont. First,

    maybe you couldnt afford to

fund one each year. Or theopposite, you made too much

    money and you participated in

    an employer-based retirement

    plan, rendering you ineligible

for an IRA. Perhaps you didnt

want to tie up your money

until age 59 , or you really

    didnt need the tax deduction.

A Roth IRA would be a good

alternative if you were to forgo

    the deduction, still allowing

you to enjoy the tax-deferredgrowth with no mandatory dis-

    tribution at age 70. There

    are Spousal IRAs and Spousal

Roth IRAs, and in the past

    some people took advantage of

    Educational IRAs. Maybe you

    rolled-over your 401K plan

into an IRA, aptly named a

    Rollover IRA. Maybe some-

one died and left you an inher-

    ited IRA? Some self-employed

    people and their employees

take part in a SEP (SimplifiedEmployee Pension) IRA or a

    SAR (Salary Reduction) SEP

IRA. The bottom line is that

    IRA is an abbreviation for

    Individual Retirement

    Account and as the headline

asks, if you have one, why not

    a JRA?

    Id like to examine the

    question a little further, assum-

ing that the IRA holder is

married. What happens toyour IRA after you die? If you

leave it to your spouse, he or

she can roll it over into his or

her own IRA if the decedent is

under 70 . If the minimum

    distributions were already ini-

    tiated, the surviving spouse

would roll it into an Inherited

    IRA and continue taking the

    minimum required distribu-

tions. If left to a child, then

    the term Stretch IRA comes

into effect, allowing taxes tobe postponed while the mini-

    mum distributions continue

    with the childs life expectan-

    cy calculation. Of course, that

child gets to name its own

beneficiary for the IRA and if

it is to its own child, the IRA

    can be stretched-out over the

    next generation, as well.

However, in my 31 years in

    this business, I cant remember

a single child stretching theIRA to the grandchildren of

    the original owner. No, out-

side of the spouses, the kids

    usually cash-out the IRA and

    pay the taxes because they

have their own bills, car pay-

    ments, mortgages, or college

    tuition for their own children

    to pay for.

But, might there be a bet-

ter way to handle your IRA?

    Answer: Yes! Why not modify

your IRA into a JRA? Thatsright; modify your Individual

    Retirement Account into a

    Joint Retirement Account as

    soon as possible! Let me

    explain Your IRA doesnt

    need to provide benefits to

    only you, the account holder.

Lets think about this for a

    moment. What would happen

to you or your spouse if he or

she survived you and your IRA

was exhausted? It appears tome that you might be out of

    income before youve even

    died and your spouse would

    definitely be out of income

    after your death, regardless of

    his or her longevity!

    But wait. If you could

    guarantee that the income

would never run dry or be

diminished in any way for the

rest of your life and your

    spouses lifetime, in essence

youve just created a JRA!Thats right one IRA and

    two incomes guaranteed for

    both the husbands and wifes

    entire lifetimes! So the hus-

    bands IRA could be protected

    for the wifes ultimate benefit

and the wifes IRA could be

    protected for the husbands

    lifetime benefit, simultaneous-

    ly! This is particularly attrac-

tive when one spouses IRA is

significantly larger than theothers IRA. Imagine creating

    a pension-like income for

joint lives from a single IRA,

    while still retaining access to

    the principal! Everyone needs

to learn how to do this!

    And there is more! Lets

    assume that the husband

    worked for 40 years, amassing

a $1 million IRA while his

wife worked in the home rais-

ing their children so she neverhad the chance to build a large

IRA for herself. With a stroke

of the pen on the proper docu-

    ment, both husband and wife

    would be guaranteed a lifetime

of income that would never be

    exhausted! Further, one pro-

    gram exists in the marketplace

    today that states if either

    spouse entered a nursing

    home, the income that was

guaranteed for life would sim-ply double! Thats right! 4.5

percent for life becomes 9 per-

cent if either party enters a

    nursing home. When they

return to their own home, or

    unfortunately the funeral

    home, the monthly check

reverts back to the 4.5 percent

    minimum amount that was

    guaranteed for life initially

until, when and if, the surviv-

    ing spouse enters a nursing

    home and the income jumps

    back up to double again!

So you see, if you have an

old style IRA, you need to

    examine the features and ben-

efits of upgrading to a JRA! If

you would like to explore this

    concept further, please call my

office for a no cost or obliga-tion appointment and an

    opportunity for us to shake

hands. It is my belief that

    everyone needs to examine

    the possibilities of upgrading

his or her IRA to a JRA before

    its too late!

    Guarantees based on the

    claims-paying ability of the

    insurance company selected.

    Recently a patient

    referred me to Dr.

    Michael F. Roizen,

MD, who wrote a book called

Real Age. The book pro-vides insight into how to cal-

    culate ones lifespan accord-

    ing to lifestyle, eating, exer-

    cising, etc. The Centers for

    Disease Control conducted a

    study at Emory University

that showed that people withgingivitis (bleeding, swollen,

    or inflamed gums) and peri-

    odontitis (gum disease that

    causes loss of jawbone around

    teeth) had a 23 to 46 percent

    higher mortality rate than

those who did not have theseproblems. These conditions

    are linked to increased rates

    of cardiovascular disease,

    stroke, and infections.

    Dr. Roizens book states:

    Flossing your teeth can

make your arteries strongerand helps keep your immune

    system young. The same bac-

    teria that cause gum disease

    also trigger the immune

    response inflammation

    that causes arteries to swell.

The swelling of arteriesresults in constriction (nar-

    rowing) and decreased blood

flow that in turn leads to car-

    diovascular disease. Other

    studies have shown that gum

    disease leads to higher white

    blood cell counts, indicating

    that the immune system is

    under high stress. Poor oral

    hygiene and increased tooth

    loss are important signs of

this risk. It is calculated thatlifespan can increase by over

    six years by maintaining oral

    hygiene!

    An estimated 80 per-

    cent of the U.S. population

has some form of gum dis-

    ease, from gingivitis to

    advanced periodontal dis-

ease. So, one of the keys to

    longevity is to floss more

often. In addition, it is rec-

    ommended to get a dental

    cleaning at least every six

    months!

    Incidentally, according

to Dr. Roizen, men who have

    regular sex, a happy monoga-

    mous heterosexual relation-

ship, and who eat plenty (not

    overeating) of pizza, mari-

nara sauce, and spaghetti canadd an additional five years

to their lives. Just floss after

    eating and don't smoke after

    sex.

    As the weather con-

    tinues to heat up in

    North Jersey, so do

    the fun and excitement at

    Eagles Day Camp, a program

    of Eastern Christian Schools.

    The series of four consecu-

    tive week-long camps, each

with a unique theme and spe-

    cial activities, is held at

    the Eastern Christian El-

    ementary School campus on

    Baldin Drive in Midland

    Park daily from 9 a.m. to 3

    p.m. (extended care avail-

able). This is the second year

    of the program, and enroll-

    ment has already doubled

    compared with last summer.

    The camps first session,

    themed Animal Adven-

    ture, was held this past

    week. The campers were

divided into four teams at the

    beginning of the week, and

    each team decided its own

    animal-themed group name.

    Thus, the Powerful Panthers,

    the Might Mighty Lemurs,

the Blue Kangaroos, and theAlmighty Piranhas took on

    the week, complete with

    mascots made entirely of

    painted cardboard boxes.

    The teams provided a basis

    for fun, competitive activi-

    ties throughout the week,

    including the Friday grand

    finale of Camp Olympics

with lots of water games to

    stay cool. Tuesday and

Thursday were spent enjoy-ing Graydon Pool in

    Ridgewood, with lots of

    swimming, shark tag, volley-

    ball, and even burying some

of the counselors in the sand.

    Each Wednesday is high-

lighted by a special day trip.

    This past week found the

    campers at the Bronx Zoo,

    which was a huge hit!

    The kids were eager to

share what they love mostabout Eagles Camp. When

    Tobi Cummins was asked

    how she liked Eagles Day

    Camp, she responded with a

    simple thumbs-up. Others

    spoke about their favorite

    activities.

    I really liked playing volleyball

    at the lake, said Carter

    Gilgen.

My favorite part of camp was

    the lake, said Louis Garcia.

    My favorite part about camp

was going to the Bronx Zoo

because I got to learn about ani-

    mals, said Emmanuel Dyer.

    My favorite part was

    Greydons Pool, said EV

    Cummins.

I liked being with my friends,

    said Shannon Spadaro.

    Eagles Day Camp is

designed to provide camperswith a variety of age-appro-

    priate activities within a safe,

    nurturing, and fun atmos-

    phere, with an emphasis on

    social, physical, and emo-

    tional growth and learning.

    Some campers come with

    friends, but making new

friends is all part of the fun!

If you know of an ele-

    mentary school-aged child

looking for a safe and unbe-lievably fun experience this

    summer, check out Eagles

    Day Camps. Limited space is

still available for the last two

    sessions: July 2327

    (Carnival Craze) and July

    30August 3 (Outstanding

    Outdoors). Contact James

    Anderson, program coordi-

    nator, for more information

    The Pompton Lakes Historic

    Preservation Commission

    recently had three historic

    plaques placed at historic

from the home so that every-

one will be safe from smoke,

    flames and falling debris. Fires

    may ignite fuel explosions, so

be sure the meeting spot is a

    good deal away.

    Children should be instruct-

ed to run to the meeting spot

    immediately without waiting

    behind for anyone to catch

    up. No one should re-enter

the home after arriving at the

    meeting spot.

Do a few practice runs so

    everyone will be accustomed

    to getting out quickly.

While in most cases it is bet-

ter to escape and let the fire

    department extinguish a fire,

in the event of a small fire,

    occupants may be able to

stanch it with a personal fire

    extinguisher. Follow the

    acronym PASS to properly

    put out the fire:

PULL the pin in the extin-

    guisher.

AIM the nozzle or hose at the

    base of the flames.

    SQUEEZE the trigger.

    SWEEP the foam across the

fire base; do not just aim in

    one place.

    Fire safety is very impor-

    tant. In conjunction with

    smoke alarms, a fire safety

    plan can help everyone get

    out alive.

    X

    ylitol is a sugar alco-

    hol that is commonly

    used as an artificial

    sweetener and is created from

    birch, raspberries, plums and

    corn. Xylitol is similar in

    sweetness to sugar but half

    the calories and without the

    common effects of sugar such

    as dental cavities and dia-

    betes. Therefore, this sweet-

    ener is found in many

    human sugar free

    products, such as

    gum, candies or other

    sweets. In humans,

    this additive has no

    serious side effects but

    in dogs, ingestion

    could be fatal. Xylitol

    has also been suspect-

    ed of causing toxicity

    in ferrets.

    Xylitol toxicity is

    one of the newer cul-

    prits for toxic

    episodes in our dogs.

    A common scenario is find-

    ing your pooch stealing a

pack of sugar free gum. While

    previously it was

    thought that only

    large concentrations

    of xylitol could

    result in problems,

    this may no longer

    be the case. Just a

    few sticks of gum

ingested by a small dog could

    cause severe problems.

    The main and initial

toxic event in dogs with xyl-

    itol ingestion is hypo-

    glycemia (low blood sugar).

    What the xylitol does is

cause a rapid release of the

    hormone insulin, resulting in

    a sudden decrease in blood

    glucose. There also appears

    What is Xylitol?

to be a strong link between

    xylitol ingestions and the

    development of liver failure

    in dogs, which can develop

    after the initial toxic phase.

    Signs of toxicity can be

seen as quickly as 30 minutes

    after xylitol ingestion. You

    may see clinical signs of

    hypoglycemia such as: vomit-

    ing, weakness, ataxia or

    uncoordinated movements,

    depression, seizures, coma,

    and later, liver dysfunction

    and/or failure. Your dog could

    also see problems from

    ingesting just small amounts

    of xylitol. Therefore do not

    base toxicity on seeing clini-

cal signs in a half hour. You

may not be in the clear

    because with smaller concen-

    trations of xylitol, the onset

    of clinical signs could be

delayed as much as 12 hours

    after ingestion.

    Since these signs can

    develop quite rapidly it is

    crucial that pet owners

    seek veterinary treatment

    immediately or contact the

    Animal Poison Control

Center. If it is soon after your

    pet has eaten a xylitol-con-

    taining sweet or food and

    before clinical signs develop,

    your veterinarian may advise

    inducing vomiting to expel

    the toxin and supportive care

    to monitor and treat the

    resultant low blood glucose

    and possible low potassium

    levels.

    Prevention is very

    important. Therefore be

    especially diligent in keeping

    candy, gum or other foods

    containing xylitol out of the

reach of pets. As with any

    potentially toxic substance,

    should accidental exposures

occur, be sure to contact your

    veterinarian or Animal

    Poison Control for immedi-

    ate assistance.

    Dessert makes the

    perfect finishing

    touch to a special

    event. Hosts and hostesses

    frequently fret over which

foods to serve at their par-

    ties, and that includes

    dessert.

    But hosts wont need a

    professional pastry chef to

    serve some imaginative and

    impressive desserts. In fact,

    it's easy for even novice

    foodies to make their own

    delicious desserts.

    Invest in a star decorators

    tip and pastry bag. Theres

no limit to what you can do

    with a simple pastry bag,

    icing and a decorative tip.

    Instead of slathering frosting

on cupcakes, use the tip to

pipe on individual stars orswirls so the cupcakes look

    dressed up. The same con-

    cept can be applied when

baking a cake in a molded

pan and when piping on the

    frosting to create a design.

You can also use it to add a dab

    of homemade whipped cream

to a serving plate aside a slice of

pie. Get creative with your pas-

    try tip and explore different

    possibilities.

    Make more garnish sauces.

    Professional chefs understand

that many people eat with their

eyes. That means guests may be

more inclined to ooh and ahh

over desserts if they are present-

ed in a special way. Take a cue

    from restaurants and garnish

the plate prior to adding the

    dessert. Create simple sauces

    from cooked-down strawberries

    or raspberries with sugar and

    Im always on the lookout

    for good food. Sometimes I

can find it right in my

    neighborhood, while other

times it requires a bit of travel.

But frankly, as long as the food

is up to par, a few extra miles

    means nothing to me. Thats

why when I was contacted by

Brix Tapas Bar & Grill in

Belleville, I had no problemjumping on the Parkway to

    experience its unique style of

    dining.

    As its name would sug-

gest, Brix Tapas Bar & Grill is

    centered around the classically

    Spanish method of dining

    called tapas. Designed to

    encourage conversation, tapas

    are small portions of delicious

foods prepared in such a way

that would make it easy fordinner guests to move around

    and fellowship without the

inconvenience of a full plate of

    food. Playing on this classic

    style, Brix has enhanced the

idea of tapas and created a

    menu with both large and

    small portioned dishes whose

    outstanding flavors encourage

    conversation of their own.

    Appetizers come in a sim-

ilar form to that of classic tapasand include a wide array of

    Italian, Spanish, and

    American varieties. Our table

was served a mixture of moz-

    zarella in carrozza (essentially a

    fried mozzarella sandwich),

    stuffed clams oreganata, a

Spanish take on rice balls, and

    the ever-popular coconut

shrimp. Each had its own taste

unique to others of its kind.

The rice balls were a delicious

    surprise to me, made with

    Spanish rice and peppers

    rather than the mozzarella and

ground beef Im used to. I

    found the consistency of the

yellow rice to be an excellent

    replacement for white rice and

very well suited to the dish.

The starters were truly a fan-

    tastic beginning to our meal,

and frankly, it was all I could

    do not to fill up!

    As dishes were cleared

    they were replaced by larger

    entre dishes. The Brix menu

    features staples including

    pasta, pizza, chicken, and steak

    that are like the appetizers

    brought into a unique light.

    Coming from an Italian family,

    we know Bolognese sauce. We

know it to a degree that we

    would almost never order it

outside moms kitchen. Well, Itook a leap of faith that day

and was floored by the integri-

ty of the sauce. Im not saying

    mom has competition neces-

sarily, but she ought to watch

out because Brix does it right!

    What really impressed me,

    however, was the fig pizza.

    Rather than a tomato based

pizza sauce, Brix uses a home-

made creamy fig paste as a base

    sprinkled with caramelized

    water. Or look to premade

    syrups. Grab that bottle of

    chocolate sauce and create a

design on a dish and then place

    the dessert on top.

Use leaves or flowers. In addi-tion to sauces on the plate, you

may want to add a few mint

leaves or an edible flower to

cleanse the palate. This adds a

touch of class to the presenta-

tion and makes guests feel spe-

    cial.

    Create individual servings. A

    dessert served in an individual

ramekin or tin can be a nice

    presentation in itself. Plus,

guests may feel like you indi-vidually created each dessert

    with them in mind. Individual

    servings look and serve well,

    rather than having a larger

    dessert demolished by slices or

    scoops.

    Go for the wow factor.

    Certain desserts lend them-

    selves to dramatic display.

    Crme brulee or flamb

    desserts will catch attention.

    Simply lighting a meringue-

topped pudding on fire for a fewminutes also can create a mem-

    orable moment. Use a good-

    quality liqueur for fire-

    enhanced desserts, so the alco-

hol can burn off quickly and

    evenly.

Embrace the use of fondant or

    gum paste. These pastry art

    materials are frequently used by

    professional pastry chefs: mold-

able dough made out of sugar.

Fondant can be rolled to covercakes, cut to turn into intricate

    shapes or hand-molded to be

    turned into figurines or other

    edible pieces. Just about any

dessert can be enhanced with a

    fondant trinket. Make a flower

or a heart out of fondant and

lay it aside a slice of cake. Give

in to a childs sense of whimsy

    by molding edible cartoon

characters for them to enjoy at

    a birthday party. Fondant-cov-

ered petit fours are also deli-cious and eye-catching.

    Use cookie cutters to create

    different shapes. Instead of a

    standard layer cake, use cookie

cutters to cut out cake pieces

and then layer them with frost-

    ing in between. Think about

baking a pie and cutting out a

piece of the pre-baked top crust

with a cookie cutter that gives

a clue to the filling inside (i.e.,

an apple cutout for an applepie). Place on top of the crust

    before baking.

    Creating special desserts

    doesnt require much effort or

    any specialized skills.
