West Caldwell Mayor JosephTempesta and Caldwell MayorAnn Dassing stopped by on

Second grade teachers Myra Leven,Anita Dunphy, and Gennifer Otinsky invit-

ed the mayors to visit their school as part ofthe yearly civics curriculum, encouragingthe students to speak to the mayors abouttheir positions, responsibilities, likes anddislikes. The students also asked the mayorswhy they decided to run for mayor and ifthey would run again. Both mayors startedin as council representatives and concurredthat they would each like to run again.

Mayors Speak About Their Role To StudentsThe question and answer session is the

capping event to the students’ introductoryunit on national and local government.

“Throughout the lessons, the studentslearned the basic responsibilities that goalong with being a mayor, and how each ofthem can play an active role in governmentthrough voting, attending council meetings, and more, all to help initiate positive

changes in their own communities,” Levensaid. “By meeting with the mayors, the stu-dents also learn why the mayors decided totake part in local government, and nowunderstand the various roles and positionsthat each mayor held prior to becomingmayor.”

By Kerry BreenDon Meserlian of Caldwell has lived a life morefull than most. At the age of 87, he has been a“professional musician, writer, inventor, engi-

neer, and rebel.”He graduated Stevens University with a master’s in

mechanical engineering, and he used that degree to helphim with his work as an inventor. He is registered as aprofessional engineer in both New York and NewJersey.

One of Meserlian’s most significant moments as aninventor came about in 1959, when he designed envi-ronmental equipment that was used to test an airbornecomputer. The equipment was used in coastal patrolplanes, and he had to be careful to follow military stan-dards, which only added difficulty to an already-compli-cated project. His method was successful, and it wasplaced on the cover of the Annual Report for G.E. thatyear.

He still continues to work as an inventor, coming upwith ideas that will help around the house. One suchinvention is the PAR whole house humidifier. It usesBounty paper towels (which can then be reused). Thereare two rolls of paper towels in the machine – since each

roll can absorb two and a half gallons of water, it holdsa total of five gallons. This radiator is cheaper and easi-er to use, and can be paired with the Portable AirRadiator (PAR), another invention of Meserlian’s. He isalso working on a device that will be used in place ofsolar panels.

“This will make solar panels obsolete,” saidMeserlain. Less bulky than an average solar panel, thedevice can be also be placed in windows instead of onthe roof, which makes them more convenient to use, andis also helpful in case of fire. In emergencies where fire-men need to access the home through the roof, the solarpanels often get in the way.

Meserlain believes that those who are trying to workon inventions should “think simply” and not over-thinkor over-complicate their ideas. He has applied this poli-cy to many of his own inventions, such as a space-sav-ing shelf, a lightbulb that can be placed on the wall –which allows the user to direct the light exactly to wherethey need it – and a birdfeeder that can accommodateseveral different types of birds.

These inventions are advertised in “The Sovereign,”a paper that is owned by Meserlain. “The Sovereign” isknown as “the newspaper of the resistance,” according

to Meserlain, and he uses it to spread awareness of ideasthat he believes cannot be found in other publications. He is one of only three people involved in the publica-tion and production of the paper. The paper has been inprint since Feb. 2012, and has put out an issue everymonth since then. Those interested in subscribing to thepaper can visit its website, http://thesovnews.com/.

Meserlian’s career as a musician has spanned years, and continues even now – he often plays his violin atThe Fine Grind, a coffee shop located in Little Falls. Heis able to pick up the tune of a song upon first hearing itand then immediately play it back, a gift that he thinkshas been very useful in his career. He was one of twelvemusicians to play with Barry White’s orchestra inTrinidad, and received a personal invitation from Davidand Peggy Rockefeller to perform at their mansion. Hehas also played in the Utica Symphony.

Meserlain has lived a full, busy life, and continues todo what he enjoys as he works on his inventions andplays at the Fine Grind. When asked why he had spreadout into so many interests and hobbies over the courseof his life and career, he said simply that “it’s fun to beable to do a lot of things.”

For over twenty years, implant dentistry has been a reliable option for patients with missing teeth. With the ability to support a crown, an implant procedure has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utiliza-tion to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure f it. As they provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier.

Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, insert-ing crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch recon-structions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

Upcoming Annual Golf Event Supports Kids With Cancer By Cheryl ConwayNineteen years ago, at the age of six,

Carlos Raymond Saavedra ofWayne was diagnosed with cancer

and told he would have less than fourmonths to live.

When he was sent to St. Judes Children’sResearch Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. toundergo experimental treatment, along withseven other children, he beat the odds andwas the lone survivor.

To honor Carlos and his survival againstmedulloblastoma, a cancerous tumor foundin the brain stem, his family set up a foun-dation- The Carlos Raymond SaavedraFoundation (C.R.S.)- in his name to supportSt. Judes, cancer victims and their families. The foundation’s annual golf outingfundraiser raises thousands of dollars forthis cause.

The Fifth Annual Carlos RaymondSaavedra Foundation Golf Outing is set forWed., Sept. 23, at the Preakness Valley GolfCourse in Wayne. Shot gun start is at 9:30a.m.; dinner, drinks and silent auction willcontinue at 5 p.m. at the Carriage House.

Prizes will be awarded in different areas

like the longest drive and closest to the pin.Cost is $150 per person, includes dinner;$85 without dinner; and $75 dinner only.Golf cart included. With 80 golfers last year, golf outing organizers are hoping to attract100 golfers this year.

The event is open to the public for bothmen and women. “Everyone’s invited; it’s agood fun day,” says Denise Caposella, orig-inal foundation founder and president.

Caposella and her husband, Michael, who chairs the golf event, started the foun-dation to honor their nephew, Carlos.

It was Oct. 11, 1996, when Carlos wasdiagnosed with cancer and underwent sev-eral surgeries.

“After a 15 hour brain surgery proce-dure, the family was told he was bleeding todeath. So the doctors stopped the surgeryand closed him up. While everyone wasdevastated with the news, God gave CarlosRaymond a miracle and the bleeding mirac-ulously stopped.”

Carlos went to St. Judes Children’sResearch Hospital to undergo an experi-mental protocol with seven other children, who “all died but him,” explains Caposella.

Carlos was left “almost completely deaf”with some learning disabilities. His parents,Linda and Carlos Sr., struggled to pay for allthe costs and relied heavily on donations.

“We started it in his honor to pay it for-ward because he was so fortunate,” saysCaposella. The foundation pays St. Judes tohelp other families pay for children battling

cancer, siblings activities and extra costssuch as gas, food, hotel.

Last year, for the first time, the founda-tion sent some kids to a summer camp inLong Island- Motivational RecoveryEnvironment- for kids with cancer and theirsiblings. Caposella hopes to send more kids

By Cheryl ConwayGoing on a trip, whether business or pleasure, canbe stressful especially if it involves driving tothe airport, deciding where to park in crowded

lots, remembering where the car is parked, getting theluggage out of the vehicle and then finding the means toget to the gate in time for a flight.

A lot of these concerns can be avoided for those driv-ers who choose Vista Parking for their off-site parkingdestination. Located directly across Newark LibertyInternational Airport, customers can park their car valetstyle in a secure 24-hour access lot before they even getto the busy airport and then receive car-door to airport-door service any time of day without any wait.

Family operated and owned since 1988, VistaParking has been providing the most convenient meansof off-site parking for travelers who use NewarkAirport.

The service at Vista Parking is “much more conven-ient than long-term because it’s a door to door service,”says the company president. “Customers are immediate-ly greeted by a van; there’s no waiting for shuttles, notwaiting every 15 minutes. We take you on demand; youcome in, we are ready to go.” Unlike other lots, “Theyare not walking through long dark parking lots in snowor far away.”

What used to be four or five lots at Newark Airporthas grown, but at Vista Parking customers can parkbefore they get to the airport.

Since the foundation was established, C.R.S. has donat-ed $23,000 so far, with $11,000 to St. Judes; and theremaining helping nine families in the U.S. and to thecampers.

Carlos, the honorary chair of the foundation, is “thrilled”to have the foundation. “It gives him a sense of purpose; itgives him a good sense of being; he likes to pay it forward,”says Caposella.

Carlos started his own online hat company last year withhis two younger sisters, Larraine and Natalia. The cancertreatments have left him bald and sensitive to others who donot have hair. For every hat that is purchased, another hat isdonated to a child with cancer. Called Halo Hats, all kindsof hats are sold such as ski caps, golf hats, sun hats. He alsoprovides the hats for each golfer at the C.R.S. Golf Outingand even passed out hats to patients at St. Judes.

A small foundation, the C.R.S. Golf Outing is the onlyfundraiser held. Golf was the chosen event as MichaelCaposella volunteers on the Paterson Fire Dept., and figuressince most firemen like to golf “he knew he could get fire-men to go,” says Caposella.

With such a good time had every year, “they say ‘I’mbringing back a four-some next year,’” says Caposella. “Westarted it with 50 golfers; it has grown.”

By Ejvind BoccoliniAll throughout northern New Jersey,an organization is helping adultswith intellectual and/or develop-

mental disabilities lead more meaningfullives as they become integrated into thecommunity and workforce more and more.

The Rose House, in Morris Plains, is a"non-profit organization, providing person-centered programs for developmentally dis-abled adults, helping them to pursue theirgoals and dreams, and become valued mem-bers of their communities," their websitereads.

Earlier this month, Tom Mitchell of theRose House spoke in a phone interviewabout upcoming programs and the help theyhave given individuals with intellectualand/or developmental disabilities.

The Rose House serves adults withIntellectual and Developmental Disabilities(IDD) such as Down Syndrome, Fragile XSyndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Its contact information [email protected]; and its website isTheRoseHouse.org.

Mitchell said The Rose House has pro-grams to help out families with an IDD indi-viduals, and the men and women them-selves, visiting their homes for possibly afew hours each day or each week, depending

on the level of care. There are different lev-els of vocational training and "self-directed"supports as well, and IDD individuals alsovisit the community for activities.

In Parsippany, at the Parsippany PAL,there is the Rose House Cafe, a communitycenter-type facility in which IDD men andwomen serve tasty muffins, soups, salads, chips and hot dogs to the members and occa-sional members of the community. This isone example of how IDD men and womenhave been trained and integrated into theworkforce, each gaining a personal upliftand creating a more meaningful life forthemselves.

The Rose House also has four grouphomes, and 10 apartments in northern NJ,offering residential possibilities for men andwomen. There are two group homes in BuddLake, one in Morris Plains, and 10 apart-ments in Hanover. They are in the process ofpurchasing a house in Parsippany as well.

Training and education in independentliving skills can allow individuals to enterinto these residential living spaces. Theygain skills in cooking, cleaning, communityshopping, and of course, job skills such asworking a cash register, for instance.

"The more integrated the better," saidMitchell, adding that the Rose House hasserved more than 100 individuals during its

15 years. For these programs, families receive par-

tial funding from the state, and parents pro-vide funding too. The Rose House acceptsmen and women 21 and older.

As a result, IDD men and women canbecome integrated by way of community-based Residential Living Skills that they willobtain from The Rose House; CompetitiveEmployment Training; Job Sampling forHigh School Seniors (graduating seniors canbecome involved though not yet 21); andHealthy Choices, a three-session course on

cooking your own healthy, tasty meals, designed specifically for people with devel-opmental disabilities and their caregivers.

Rose House is planning a 5K run/walk atCounty College of Morris in Randolph forOct. 11. Check its website, theRoseHouse.org closer to the event to con-firm the details.

Individuals qualify for the Rose Houseservices via referrals from the stateDepartment of Developmental Disabilities,Easter Seals, and also via referrals from NJhigh schools.
