    Engine oil pressure, fault tracingAfter

    •   basic data gathering

    •   reading off fault codes

    •   parameter checks

have been completed, use the results from the tests(as recommended in the symptom information) tounderstand the vital functions of the engine. Weigh theresults of all the information together to create a goodbasis for the continued fault-tracing work in this checklist. As a fault can affect several systems, it is important to carry out the specified VCADS Pro tests to allow fault causes to be excluded or confirmed at an early stage.

Note:  Because the illustrations in the service literature

are used for different engine versions there may bedifferences in the components. The essential informationin the illustrations is always correct.

Comments for Oil pressure engine, fault-tracing

    Oil level, check1

Check that the oil level lies within the tolerances.

If the oil level is below or close to the  min  line on thedipstick, it can affect the oil pressure during very arduousdriving or when driving in very hilly terrain.

2If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with thenext step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, faulttracing” page 2.

Oil quality, check1Check that the oil quality meets Volvo specification.

2Check if the oil is contaminated with coolant, fuel or soot.

If the oil is contaminated with coolant, the oil pressuremay deteriorate due to clogged oil filters and oil valves.Contaminated oil can also cause damage to the oil pumpwith engine breakdown as a consequence.

    Possible causes of faults:

    •   Inner leakage in the oil cooler.Check oil contamination in the coolant.

    •   Leakage in the cylinder head gasket.

    •   Leakage at the O-rings between the cylinder liner andcylinder block.

    •   Cracks in the cylinder head, cylinder liner or cylinderblock.

If there is fuel in the engine oil, see “Fuel in engine oil, fault tracing” (Check list C), Diagnosis Group 2330.

3If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with thenext step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, faulttracing” page 2.

    22106-3Oil filter, check

1Check that the oil filter is not damaged or clogged.

If the filter is damaged, the oil flow through it may berestricted. This can lower the oil pressure.

2If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with thenext step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, faulttracing” page 2.

Oil filter drain valve, check1Remove the oil filter.

    2

    T2023786

Check that the valve located at the bottom is notdamaged so that its function is impaired.

Press in the valve cone with a blunt object and check thatit does not bind and that it seals against the seat.

Note. When the filter is installed the valve is alwaysclosed. If it has been damaged, oil can leak through itand lower the oil pressure.

3If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with thenext step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, fault

    tracing” page 2.

Oil pressure gauge, check1Connect the PC tool to the bus diagnostic connector.Start the VCADS Pro test “28407–3 Sensor values, check” and check the values for engine oil pressure.Follow the instructions in VCADS Pro.

2Compare the value with the displayed value in the oil

    pressure gauge in the instrument.

If the values do not match, perform the VCADS Pro test“38117-3 Instrument panel, test” and check the oilpressure gauge.

3If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with thenext step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, faulttracing” page 2.

    22104-3Oil pressure sensor, check

If you suspect that the oil pressure sensor gives an incorrect value, check the oil pressure using an external pressure sensor.

1Check the oil pressure using an external pressure sensorand compare the values with the specification.

    Connecting the external pressure sensor

    2Remove the pressure sensor.

    3

    T2022897

Fit nipple 9992873 and oil hose 9998493.Connect pressure gauge 9998339 to the oil hose.

    9992873 , 9998339, 9998493

4Start the engine. Check the oil pressure.

If the oil pressure measurement shows that the pressureis below the minimum value according to the specification, continue the fault tracing by checking the oil filters.

If oil pressure measurement using an external pressuresensor shows that the pressure is within the tolerances, but the normal pressure sensor in the engine does not, replace the pressure sensor.

5If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with thenext step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, faulttracing” page 2.

    Oil pump safety valve, check1

    T2023788

    Remove the safety valve.

2Check that the valve is not damaged so that its functionis impaired. Check that it does not bind and that itseals against its seat.

3If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with thenext step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, faulttracing” page 2.

Overflow valve for lubricating system, check

    1Remove the oil filter housing.

    2

    T2023787

Remove the overflow valve, refer to “22335–2 Oil cooleroverflow valve, change”, in repair Group 2229.

Check that the valve piston and spring are not damagedso that their function is impaired. Check that the valvecone does not bind and that it seals against its seat.

3If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with thenext step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, faulttracing” page 2.
