Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD) Response to Drought Affected in

Tharparkar Updates as of 21-12-2014

HHRD started its Emergency Response (from 14 March to 15 April 2014) and benefitted 95,000 people by

health care Assistance, provision of nutrition supplements and clean drinking water to their door step. Keeping

in view the misery of Thar, worst condition of health facilities and increased mortality rate of children, HHRD

Restarted Emergency Response from 5th of December, 2014. Helping Hand for Relief and Development

established a camp office in District Headquarter Tharparkar at Mithi and providing Health care assistance

through Mobile Medical Unit, Food items, nutrients and provision of clean drinking water.

Polio Updates

28th Polio Case Confirmed in Sindh as of 18-12-2014

The provincial health authorities on Wednesday confirmed another polio case in Sindh — a 10-month-old girl

from Sanghar — bringing the tally to 28 cases this year. Officials in the Expanded Programme on Immunization

(EPI) in Sindh said, Pooja a daughter of Umeedo of Sanghar district, was the latest victim whose stool samples

were sent to the National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad three weeks ago. She is the second polio victim

from Sanghar district. A 2-year-old boy was the first victim whose infection was confirmed in July. Of the 28

cases detected in Sindh, 23 were in Karachi alone. Two cases from Sanghar and one each case was reported

from Dadu, Badin and Shikarpur districts.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Activities Updates as of

19-12-2014

Supporting Community Resilience (SCORE) Project Review Board Meeting

A project Review Board meeting of the UNDP funded project titled ‘SCORE’ was held at the NDMA on 19th Dec,

2014. The meeting was headed by the Chairman NDMA and attended by representatives of EAD, PMD, NIDM,

UNDP and NDMA officials. The Programme Officer of UNDP gave a detailed presentation covering major

activities carried out during 2014 under the following three project outputs;

Institutional Support for implementation of the DRR Policy and NDMP including support to NIDM for

trainings on DRM and PMD for early warning dissemination.

Community Resilience by undertaking CBDRM activities in five pilot districts / communities.

Risk Mitigation for earthquake and floods

The Annual Work Plan of 2015 was then presented that was discussed by the Board and necessary additions /

omissions made with the consultation of the participants. The Plan was approved, in principle, with the advice

to prioritize the activities, keeping in view the size of the budget available. The Plan so revised shall be

presented again for approval before the Board by mid of January, 2015 wherein the representatives of the

relevant PDMAs shall be invited.

Al-Khidmat Foundation (AKF) Activities in District as of 20-12-2014 Date District Activities

20-12-2014 Peshawar Keeping the tradition of former years alive, AKF distributed food packages among 200 deserving Christian families as Christmas gifts. The food packages contained Oil, Flour, Sugar, Rice, and other eatables. A special ceremony was arranged in S.T. Jones Catholic Church Peshawar Cantonment

19-12-2014 Peshawar AKF distributed 350 winter packages among deserving families. The distribution was carried out with the association of Muslim Aid Australia. A total of 1,000 winter packages are to be distributed; out of which, 350 have already been distributed. A special distribution ceremony was held for the distribution of winter packages in which President AKF Pakistan also participated.

Polio Case Reported in Balochistan Updates as on 19-12-2014 Two more polio cases have been detected in Qila Abdullah and Nasirabad districts of Balochistan.

According to sources in the health department, 19 cases of the crippling disease have been reported so far

this year from different parts of the province. A polio vaccination campaign was suspended in Quetta on

Nov 26 after a gun attack on polio workers in which four vaccinators, among them three women, lost their

lives.
