    DIVISION 01 00 00 - GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

    01 10 00 SUMMARY

    This specification is to be read in accordance with Contract and all otherproject documents.

    Contractor shall provide all plant, tools, and equipments, labour, supervision,technical and professional services, materials and supply and shall performall operations required to construct, furnish and equip the "NATIONALASSEMBLY OF BAHRAIN" with all support facilities and utilities and site worksas specified and shown on the drawings.

    01 10 01 TEMPORARY FACILITIES AND UTILITIES

    The Contractor shall furnish any required temporary offices, store sheds,workshop, toilet facilities, temporary water, power, lights and sewerprovisions for the duration of the project to the satisfaction of the Engineeror his nominated assistants. The Contractor shall be liable in co-ordinationwith the local authorities as to its temporary facilities and he shall beresponsible for maintaining said utilities as long as needed for the safe andproper completion of the work.

    01 10 02 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

    Design temperatures : 7 C (Winter)& 52 C apparent temperature (Summer)

    01 10 03 WORKMANSHIP

    The Building shall be designed as a dwelling fit for human inhabitation with aminimum life period of twenty five years in the climatic conditions ofKingdom of Bahrain. The Contractor shall satisfy himself that all aspects ofdesign are adequate for the above purpose and shall as soon as he becomesaware of any fault or omission in such design either before or during the

    construction and maintenance of each works immediately inform theEngineer or his nominated assistants direct in writing in order that any suchfault or omission may be duly examined and corrected by mutual agreement.

    In addition the Contractor shall satisfy himself that all materials, productsand workmanship are of a sufficient standard to ensure a safe and habitablehuman environment within the Building constructed in the Kingdom ofBahrain.

    For this purpose the Contractor shall obtain from the manufacturer andsupplier of each material and product and shall submit for the approval of theEngineer or his nominated assistants written details of the specification,guaranteed and expected life in Kingdom of Bahrain and instructions for useof each such material and product.

    No material or product shall be purchased or used by the Contractor until theabove written details have been accepted in writing by the Engineer or hisnominated assistants.

    In the event that any works may be subject to harsh environment hazardsthe Contractor shall examine the effect of such hazards in the Building or anypart thereof and on any material or product used in the construction theBuilding and shall inform the Engineer or his nominated assistants in writingof any such effect prior to the commencement of construction or prior to thepurchase of such material or product.

    01 10 04 INSPECTION

    The Engineer or his nominated assistants shall at regular intervals orwhenever necessary inspect the works and perform tests or instruct theperformance of tests. The Engineer or his nominated assistants will ensurethat the works are in strict compliance with the project documents andspecification.

    01 10 05 REGRESSIVE COLLAPSE

    The Contractor is to ensure that all Designs are in accordance with BS 8110with particular reference to Clause 2.2.2.1 (Structural stability) and is toensure that the requirements of this Clause are designed to, in that if a localfailure occurs for any reason, the collapse mechanism should be regressiveand not progressive and that the extent of the damage is notdisproportionate to the cause.

    01 10 06 SUPPLEMENTAL DESIGNS AND DRAWINGS

    In cases of item/s not mentioned in the Contract drawings and is specified inthe Contract specifications or vice versa, it shall be the responsibility of theContractor to design and produce all necessary drawings to suit the actualfield conditions or as the need calls for it. He shall submit these designs anddrawings to the Engineer or his nominated assistants for further evaluationand approval.

    01 14 00 WORK RESTRICITONS

    Do not use the site for any purpose other than carrying out the works.

    No placards or advertisements shall be affixed to any temporary hoarding,gantry scaffolding, Building or structure without the Engineer or hisnominated assistants specific written approval to their design and placing.The right of advertisement upon hoarding, gantries etc. and upon theBuilding is reserved to the Employer absolutely.

    The Contractor shall provide sites for all offices, plant and workshopsnecessary for the construction of the works.

    Site Offices for the Engineer and his nominated assistants and the Contractorshall be erected within a compound and the Contractor shall take allnecessary precautions to avoid storm water flooding within the compound

    and accesses.

    The Engineer and his nominated assistants office shall be erected and fullyequipped to the satisfaction of the Engineer or his nominated assistantswithin the mobilisation period.

    Within two weeks after the completion of the works, the whole area of thecompound shall be reinstated to its original condition and all rubbish andrefuse removed.

    All Directives and Amiri decrees with regard to safety at Construction works

    shall be strictly adhered to and regular safety audits conducted and reportedat the works by a qualified Safety officer to the approval of the Engineer orhis nominated assistants.

    The Contractor shall establish a full pledge Health, Safety and EnvironmentDepartment to implement and monitor the Health, Safety and EnvironmentManagement System and is subject to the approval of the Engineer or hisnominated assistants.

    01 56 00 TEMPORARY BARRIER AND ENCLOSURES

    PROTECTION

    Adequately protect all parts of the works. Wherever work is of an especiallyvulnerable nature or is exposed to abnormal risks provide special protectionto ensure that damage does not occur.

    SITE ADMINISTRATION AND SECURITY

    Adequately safeguard the site, products, materials, plants the works, andany existing Buildings affected by the works from damage and theft until thecompletion of the project. Take all reasonable solution to preventunauthorized access to the site, the works and adjoining property.

    STABILITY

    Accept responsibility for the stability and structural integrity of the worksduring the contract, and support as necessary. Prevent overloading. Detailsof design loads may be obtained from the General Notes of Structuraldrawings, from the Design Engineer or his nominated assistants.

    PROTECT THE FOLLOWING:

    a) EXISTING SERVICES:

    1) Notify all service authorities of proposed works not less than one weekbefore commencing site operation. Diversion and/or relocation ofservices, if to be provided by the Contractor, shall be in accordancewith the approval of concerned authority's standard regulations.

    2) Before starting work check positions of existing services.

    3) Observe local and/or service authority's recommendations for workadjacent to existing services.

    4) Adequately protect, uphold, maintain and prevent damage to allservices. Do not interfere with their operation without consent of theservice authorities or private owners, or the Engineer or his nominatedassistants as appropriate.

    If any damage to services results from the execution of the works, notifyProject Manager and appropriate service authority. Make arrangements forthe work to be made good without delay to the satisfaction of the serviceauthority or private owner as appropriate.

    Replace any marker tapes or protective covers disturbed during site

    operations to the service authority's recommendations.

    b) ROADS AND FOOTPATHS

    Ensure that no damage beyond fair wear and tear is caused by the site trafficof roads and footpaths outside boundaries. Adequately maintain approachesto the site and keep clear of mud and debris.

    Upon completion of works, all roads, Building and foot paths in the vicinity ofsite shall be restored/make good to Engineer or his nominated assistantsapproval, to the extent shown by the Engineer or his nominated assistants.

    c) ADJOINING PROPERTY:

    Take all reasonable precautions to prevent damage to adjoining property.Obtain permission as necessary from the owners of adjoining property ifrequired to erect scaffolding or any other use of the adjoining property, andpay all charges. Clear away and make good on completion or when directed.

    d) EXISTING STRUCTURES

    Provide and maintain during the execution of the works all shoring,strutting and other supports as may be necessary to preserve thestability of existing structures on the site or adjoining, that may be

    endangered, or affected by the works.

    01 32 00 CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS DOCUMENTATION

    01 32 16 CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS SCHEDULE

    The Contractor shall along with the tender submission, issue a tenderprogramme, reflecting the major activities involved in the Project.

    The Contractor shall, upon appointment to carry out the works, forthwithprepare detailed program for the construction representing units of work, asreference for assessment of work progress at all times. The Contractor shalluse CPM/PERT/Primavera or similar systems analysis techniques in planning,scheduling and controlling the works.

    01 32 19 SUBMITTAL SCHEDULES

    The Contractor shall, upon appointment to carry out the works, forthwithprepare and submit for the approval of the Engineer or his nominated

    assistants a schedule listing the names and addresses of sub-contractors,suppliers and manufacturers, the trademarks, types and origin of allproducts, and systems he proposes to incorporate in the works, together withall descriptions and specifications that may be required in this connectionbefore any appointments are made or orders are placed.

    01 33 23 SHOP DRAWINGS

    The term 'Shop Drawings' as used herein shall also include: Manufacturer'sstandard drawings descriptive literature, catalogues, brochures, performanceand test data, wiring and control diagrams and all other descriptive datapertaining to materials, equipment and methods of construction. Catalogues,pamphlets and the like shall be specific and identification of material orequipment submitted shall be clearly made in ink. Data of a general naturewill not be accepted.

    The Contractor shall prepare all shop and setting out drawings and schedulesrequired for the works. These submittals shall be checked and approved bythe Engineer or his nominated assistants and re-submit further copies untilapproval has been granted by the Engineer or his nominated assistants. Nofurther changes are to be made to shop drawings unless instructed by theEngineer or his nominated assistants, and no work shall be started nor has

    material or equipment ordered until the Engineer or his nominated assistantsapproved the shop drawings in writing. Shop drawings should be submittedin four copies, re-submitted shop drawings should be also submitted in fourcopies.

    The shop drawings shall clearly be identified with the name of the project,Contractor, supplier and the like, the date and signature of preparation andthe dates and signatures of all revisions. The shop drawings shall becomplete and show the design, dimensions. Materials used, finishes and allother details, and information necessary, and shall also show adjoining workand details of connections thereto.

    The submission of all shop drawings and materials shall be built into theprogram of works along with the approval of the said drawings and materialsallowing a minimum period of approval as required in the Contract.

    The Contractor shall also check and verify all site measurements whereverrequested by other specialist Contractors to enable them to prepare theirown shop drawings and pass on the information with sufficient promptnessso as to not delay the works in any way. A copy of all the information passedshall be given to the Engineer or his nominated assistants. The Contractorshall submit to the Engineer or his nominated assistants for approval, shopdrawings showing the size and locations of all Building service penetration

    through the Building structure and fabric. In addition, the Contractor shall atall times, keep on site a separate set of prints on which shall be noted neatly,accurately and promptly as the work progresses all significant changesbetween the work shown on the drawings and that which is actuallyconstructed.

    01 33 26 QUALITY CONTROL

    The Contractor shall ensure that the works are in strict compliance with theProject Documents and specifications. The Contractor shall employ at site acompetent and experienced quality control engineer, who shall ensurecompliance of the works to specifications and who shall prepare and submitprior to start of the work a quality control program for approval by theEngineer or his nominated assistants. The Engineer or his nominatedassistants shall at regular intervals or whenever necessary inspect the worksand performs tests or instruct the performance of tests in accordance withthe stipulations of the Contract.

    01 42 16 DEFINITIONS

    QUALITY-ASSURANCE SERVICES:

    Activities, actions, and procedures performed before and during execution ofthe Work to guard against defects and deficiencies and substantiate thatproposed construction will comply with requirements.

    QUALITY-CONTROL SERVICES:

    Tests, inspections, procedures, and related actions during and afterexecution of the Work to evaluate that actual products incorporated into theWork and completed construction comply with requirements. Services do notinclude contract enforcement activities performed by Engineer.

    MOCKUPS:

    Full-size, physical assemblies that are constructed on-site. Mockups are usedto verify selections made under sample submittals, to demonstrate aestheticeffects and, where indicated, qualities of materials and execution, and toreview construction, coordination, testing, or operation; they are notSamples. Approved mockups establish the standard by which the Work willbe judged.

    LABORATORY MOCKUPS:

    Full-size, physical assemblies that are constructed at testing facility to verify

    performance characteristics.

    SAMPLE MOCKUP INSTALLATIONS:

    Full-size, physical assemblies that are a section of the construction. SampleMockup Installations are used to verify selections made under samplesubmittals, to demonstrate aesthetic effects and, where indicated, qualitiesof materials and execution, and to review construction, coordination, testing,or operation; they are not Samples. Approved mockup installations establishthe standard by which the Work will be judged, and may remain in place aspart of the completed construction.

    PRECONSTRUCTION TESTING:

    Tests and inspections that are performed specifically for the Project beforeproducts and materials are incorporated into the Work to verify performanceor compliance with specified criteria.

    PRODUCT TESTING:

    Tests and inspections that are performed by a testing agency qualified toconduct product testing and acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, toestablish product performance and compliance with industry standards.

    SOURCE QUALITY-CONTROL TESTING:

    Tests and inspections that are performed at the source.

    FIELD QUALITY-CONTROL TESTING:

    Tests and inspections that are performed on-site for installation of the Workand for completed Work.

    TESTING AGENCY:

    An entity engaged to perform specific tests, inspections, or both. Testinglaboratory shall mean the same as testing agency.

    01 45 00 QUALITY CONTROL & ASSURANCE

    SUMMARY

    A. This Section includes administrative and procedural requirements forquality assurance and quality control.

    B. Testing and inspecting services are required to verify compliance withrequirements specified or indicated. These services do not relieveContractor of responsibility for compliance with the Contract Documentrequirements.

    Specific quality-assurance and -control requirements for individualconstruction activities are specified in the Sections that specify thoseactivities. Requirements in those Sections may also cover productionof standard products.

    Specified tests, inspections, and related actions do not limit

    Contractor's other quality-assurance and -control procedures thatfacilitate compliance with the Contract Document requirements.

    Requirements for Contractor to provide quality-assurance and -controlservices required by Engineer, Employer or authorities having

    jurisdiction are not limited by provisions of this Section.

    CONFLICTING REQUIREMENTS

    General: If compliance with two or more standards is specified and thestandards establish different or conflicting requirements for minimumquantities or quality levels, comply with the most stringent requirement.Refer uncertainties and requirements that are different, but apparently equal,to Engineer for a decision before proceeding.

    Minimum Quantity or Quality Levels: The quantity or quality level shown orspecified shall be the minimum provided or performed. The actual installationmay comply exactly with the minimum quantity or quality specified, or it mayexceed the minimum within reasonable limits.

    To comply with these requirements, indicated numeric values are minimumor maximum, as appropriate, for the context of requirements. Referuncertainties to Engineer for a decision before proceeding.

    SUBMITTALS

    Qualification Data: For testing agencies specified in "Quality Assurance"Article to demonstrate their capabilities and experience. Include proof ofqualifications in the form of a recent report on the inspection of the testingagency by a recognized authority.

    Schedule of Tests and Inspections: Prepare in tabular form and include thefollowing:

    Specification Section number and title.Description of test and inspection.Identification of applicable standards.Identification of test and inspection methods.Number of tests and inspections required.Time schedule or time span for tests and inspections.Entity responsible for performing tests and inspections.Requirements for obtaining samples.Unique characteristics of each quality-control service.

    Reports: Prepare and submit certified written reports that include thefollowing:

    Date of issue.Project title and number.Name, address, and telephone number of testing agency.Dates and locations of samples and tests or inspections.Names of individuals making tests and inspections.Description of the Work and test and inspection method.Identification of product and Specification Section.

    Complete test or inspection data.Test and inspection results and an interpretation of test results.Record of temperature and weather conditions at time of sample taking andtesting and inspecting.Comments or professional opinion on whether tested or inspected Workcomplies with the Contract Document requirements.Name and signature of laboratory inspector.Recommendations on retesting and re-inspecting.

    Permits, Licenses, and Certificates: For Employer's records, submit copies ofpermits, licenses, certifications, inspection reports, releases, jurisdictionalsettlements, notices, receipts for fee payments, judgments, correspondence,records, and similar documents, established for compliance with standardsand regulations bearing on performance of the Work.

    QUALITY ASSURANCE

    General: Qualifications paragraphs in this Article establish the minimumqualification levels required; individual Specification Sections specifyadditional requirements.

    Installer Qualifications: A firm or individual experienced in installing,erecting, or assembling work similar in material, design, and extent to thatindicated for this Project, whose work has resulted in construction with arecord of successful in-service performance.

    Manufacturer Qualifications: A firm experienced in manufacturing products orsystems similar to those indicated for this Project and with a record ofsuccessful in-service performance, as well as sufficient production capacity toproduce required units.

    Fabricator Qualifications: A firm experienced in producing products similar tothose indicated for this Project and with a record of successful in-serviceperformance, as well as sufficient production capacity to produce requiredunits.

    Professional Engineer Qualifications: A professional engineer who is legallyqualified to practice in jurisdiction where Project is located and who isexperienced in providing engineering services of the kind indicated.

    Engineering services are defined as those performed for installations of thesystem, assembly, or products that are similar to those indicated for thisProject in material, design, and extent.

    Specialists: Certain sections of the Specifications require that specificconstruction activities shall be performed by entities that are recognizedexperts in those operations. Specialists shall satisfy qualificationrequirements indicated and shall be engaged for the activities indicated.

    Build mockups in location and of size indicated or, if not indicated, asdirected by Engineer.

    Notify Engineer seven days in advance of dates and times whenmockups will be constructed.

    Demonstrate the proposed range of aesthetic effects andworkmanship.

    Obtain Engineers approval of mockups before starting work,fabrication, or construction. Allow seven days for initial review andeach re-review of each mockup.

    Maintain mockups during construction in an undisturbed condition as astandard for judging the completed Work.

    Demolish and remove mockups when directed, unless otherwiseindicated.

    Sample Mock-Up Installations:

    Scope: In advance of the completion of the rest of the Works, the followingparts of the building are to be prepared as complete samples of all finishesand components that will be visible in the respective parts of the finishedWorks. No part of the mock-up works may be incorporated into the finishedWorks without the Engineers specific approval.

    Programme: The sample sections of the Works are to be prepared as early aspossible in the Contract Period. Submit a programme for the preparation ofnecessary working drawings, approvals, procurement, installation andcompletion of the sample sections, demonstrating how such early preparationis to be achieved, and submit the same for the Engineers approval.

    Design and Drawings: The Contractor should allow for the design andconstruction of temporary supports, frames or backgrounds which may benecessary to complete the sample sections, and should prepare and submitfor the Engineers approval working drawings showing such supports, framesor backgrounds and each necessary temporary adaptation of the permanentworks.

    Other Samples: The requirement to prepare the sample section does notrelieve the Contractor of the requirements under separate Sections of theSpecification to provide samples, sample panels and mock ups, unlessspecifically agreed otherwise in writing by the Engineer.

    QUALITY CONTROL

    Unless otherwise indicated, provide quality-control services specified andthose required by authorities having jurisdiction. Perform quality-controlservices required of Contractor by authorities having jurisdiction, whetherspecified or not.

    1. Where services are indicated as Contractor's responsibility, engage aqualified testing agency to perform these quality-control services.

    2. Notify testing agencies at least 24 hours in advance of time when Workthat requires testing or inspecting will be performed.

    3. Where quality-control services are indicated as Contractor's responsibility,submit a certified written report, in duplicate, of each quality-control service.

    4. Testing and inspecting requested by Contractor and not required by theContract Documents are Contractor's responsibility.

    5. Submit additional copies of each written report directly to authoritieshaving jurisdiction, when they so direct.

    Manufacturer's Field Services: Where indicated, engage a factory-authorizedservice representative to inspect field-assembled components and equipmentinstallation, including service connections. Report results in writing asspecified in Section "Submittal Procedures."

    Retesting/Re-inspecting: Regardless of whether original tests or inspectionswere Contractor's responsibility, provide quality-control services, includingretesting and re-inspecting, for construction that replaced Work that failed tocomply with the Contract Documents.

    Testing Agency Responsibilities: Cooperate with Engineer and Contractor inperformance of duties. Provide qualified personnel to perform required testsand inspections.

    Notify Engineer and Contractor promptly of irregularities or deficienciesobserved in the work during performance of its services.

    Determine the location from which test samples will be taken and inwhich in-situ tests are conducted.

    Conduct and interpret tests and inspections and state in each reportwhether tested and inspected work complies with or deviates fromrequirements.

    Submit a certified written report, in duplicate, of each test, inspection,and similar quality- control service through Contractor.

    Does not release, revoke, alter, or increase the Contract Documentrequirements or approve or accept any portion of the Work.

    Do not perform any duties of Contractor.

    Associated Services: Cooperate with agencies performing required tests,inspections, and similar quality-control services, and provide reasonableauxiliary services as requested. Notify agency sufficiently in advance ofoperations to permit assignment of personnel. Provide the following:

    Access to the Work.

    Incidental labor and facilities necessary to facilitate tests and

    inspections.

    Adequate quantities of representative samples of materials thatrequire testing and inspecting. Assist agency in obtaining samples.

    Facilities for storage and field curing of test samples.

    Delivery of samples to testing agencies.

    Preliminary design mix proposed for use for material mixes thatrequire control by testing agency.

    Security and protection for samples and for testing and inspectingequipment at Project site.

    Coordination: Coordinate sequence of activities to accommodate requiredquality-assurance and control services with a minimum of delay and to avoidnecessity of removing and replacing construction to accommodate testingand inspecting.

    Schedule times for tests, inspections, obtaining samples, and similaractivities.

    Schedule of Tests and Inspections: Prepare a schedule of tests, inspections,and similar quality control services required by the Contract Documents

    Distribution: Distribute schedule to Employer, Engineer testing agencies, andeach party involved in performance of portions of the Work where tests andinspections are required.

    SPECIAL TESTS AND INSPECTIONS

    Special Tests and Inspections: Employer will engage a qualified testingagency to conduct special tests and inspections required by authoritieshaving jurisdiction as the responsibility of Employer, and as follows:

    Verifying that manufacturer maintains detailed fabrication and quality-control procedures and reviewing the completeness and adequacy ofthose procedures to perform the Work.

    Notifying Engineer and Contractor promptly of irregularities anddeficiencies observed in the Work during performance of its services.

    Submitting a certified written report of each test, inspection, andsimilar quality-control service to Engineer with copy to contractor andto authorities having jurisdiction.

    Submitting a final report of special tests and inspections at SubstantialCompletion, which includes a list of unresolved deficiencies.

    Interpreting tests and inspections and stating in each report whethertested and inspected work complies with or deviates from the ContractDocuments.

    Retesting and re-inspecting corrected work.

    EXECUTION

    ACCEPTABLE TESTING AGENCIES

    Engineers approval required for each proposed testing agency, prior to thecarrying-out of tests.

    TEST AND INSPECTION LOG

    A. Prepare a record of tests and inspections. Include the following:1. Data test or inspection was conducted.2. Description of the Work tested or inspected.3. Date test or inspection results were transmitted to Engineer.

    4. Identification of testing agency or special inspector conducting test orinspection.

    B. Maintain log at Project site. Post changes and modifications as they occur.Provide access to test and inspection log for Engineer reference duringnormal working hours.

    c) The offices shall have full partitions and all shall have individualentrance doors and the room sizes shall be as shown in theattached schedule of offices.

    d) The offices shall be air-conditioned with the exception of toiletsand, shower room.

    e) The Contractor may either arrange for a temporary main powersupply to the offices or maintain adequate generating units. Allelectricity, water, bills shall be borne and paid by theContractor.

    f) Adequate fitted hardware, electrical switches, sockets, lightingand plumbing fitting, sanitary ware fittings and fixtures etc.shall be provided as necessary for the different areas.

    g) Corridors and entrance areas shall be additional to the office

    sizes.

    h) The electrical installation shall provide for simultaneous use ofall electrical appliances and the Contractor shall ensure anuninterrupted supply of gas, water and electricity to the officesfor the duration of the contract.

    The Contractor shall arrange for a temporary main water supply andtemporary drainage connections and all bills shall be paid for by theContractor.

    SITE OFFICE FOR THE ENGINEER AND HIS NOMINATED ASSISTANTS:

    The site offices for the Engineer and his nominated assistants shall beavailable in full working order within 14 days of the order to commence andshall remain so until 28 days after the time of completion / as per thecontract terms and conditions.

    The Contractor shall retain on site or make available to the Engineer and hisnominated assistants all codes and standards referred to in thespecifications/drawings.

    CONTRACTORS ACCOMMODATION

    The Contractor to furnish the accommodation requirements and facilities tohis manpower in his own expense.

    01 52 19 SANITARY FACILITIES

    Toilets, showers and washing facilities shall be provided and maintained onsite or as directed by the Engineer or his nominated assistants. Toilets shallbe individually partitioned and the enclosures provided with lockable doors.

    WASTE DISPOSAL

    The Contractor shall make such temporary provisions as may be required inorder to dispose of any chemicals, fuels, oils, greases, bituminous materials,waste and soil waste and the like without causing pollution to either the siteor the environment. Disposal of any materials, wastes effluent, garbage, oilgrease, chemicals and the like shall be in areas specified by the connectedlocal authority (Municipality) proposed by the Contractor and subject to theapproval of the Engineer or his nominated assistants .

    If any waste material is dumped in unauthorized areas, the Contractor shall

    remove the material and restore the area to the condition of the adjacentundisturbed area. If necessary, contaminated ground shall be excavated,disposed of as directed by the Engineer or his nominated assistants andreplaced with suitable fill material, compacted and finished with topsoil.

    01 52 16 FIRST AID FACILITIES

    The Contractor shall provide adequate first aid facilities.

    01 51 13 TEMPORARY ELECTRICITY

    The Contractor shall make all necessary arrangements for a temporaryelectrical service, pay all expenses in connection with the installation,operation and removal thereof and pay the costs of electricity consumed byall trades. All temporary electrical power shall be as per EDD regulations forconstruction power supply.

    In the event the site cannot be connected to a local electricity network orwhere the available power is insufficient, the Contractor has to make his owntemporary provision and maintain such temporary installation until therequired tests (including fill load test) are conducted.

    The temporary lighting systems shall be furnished, installed and maintainedby the Contractor as required to satisfy the minimum requirements for safetyand security. The temporary lighting systems shall afford adequate generalillumination to all Building areas. Adequate outdoor lighting shall be providedto illuminate staging, trenches and the like to the satisfaction of the Engineeror his nominated assistants, and general illumination throughout adequatefor watchmen and emergency personnel.

    Temporary equipment and wiring for power and lighting shall be inaccordance with the applicable provision of governing codes. Temporarywiring shall be maintained in a safe manner and utilized so as not toconstitute a hazard to persons or property.

    When the permanent electrical power and lighting systems are in anoperating condition, they may be used for temporary power and lighting forconstruction purposes, provided that the Contractor obtains the writtenapproval of the Engineer or his nominated assistants and assumes fullresponsibility for the entire power and lighting systems, and pays all costs foroperation and maintenance of the systems.

    01 51 16 TEMPORARY FIRE PROTECTION

    The Contractor shall provide and maintain adequate fire protection in the

    form of barrels of water with buckets, fire bucket tanks, fire extinguishers, orother effective means of extinguishing fire, ready for instant use distributedaround the project and in and about temporary inflammable structuresduring construction of the works.

    Gasoline and other flammable liquids shall be stored in and dispensed fromsafety containers approved by the Engineer or his nominated assistants andstorage shall not be within Building.

    Torch-cutting and welding operations performed by the Contractor shall havethe approval of the Engineer or his nominated assistants before such work is

    started and a chemical extinguisher is to be available at the location wheresuch work is in progress.

    The Contractor shall follow the instruction and specifications of the CivilDefense Department.

    01 51 36 TEMPORARY WATER

    The Contractor shall supply in sufficient quantity all necessary potable andother water for construction purposes for all trades at a point within a

    reasonable distance of any Building being constructed. He shall makearrangements and pay charges for water service installation maintenanceand removal thereof, and pay the costs of water for all trades.

    01 54 00 CONSTRUCTION AIDS

    01 54 13 CONSTRUCTION ELEVATORS AND HOIST

    The Contractor shall provide, install, maintain and remove material andpersonnel hoist as required for normal use by all trades and employ onlyskilled operators for them. He shall provide necessary guards, signals,protective facilities, safety devices and the like required for safe operation,provide suitable runways from hoists to each floor level and roof, and removeall such facilities after they have served their purpose or when directed bythe Engineer or his nominated assistants.

    The Contractor shall also provide and maintain all temporary ladders, ramps,runways, chutes, derricks, stairs, and similar items required for the properexecution of the work and permit the use of such facilities by otherContractors, sub-contractors or trades. Hoists or chutes shall be soconstructed as to prevent damage, staining or marking of permanent work.

    No materials, rubbish or debris shall be permitted to drop free, but shall beremoved by use of material hoist and/or fully enclosed rubbish chute.Temporary support system to protect against accidental fall of debris shall beprovided at each floor level.

    Where required, openings in slabs, walls and partitions shall be provided forinstalling large pieces of equipment. The openings shall be closed and/ormade good and finished after the equipment is in place. Structuralmodification, if required, shall be subject to prior approval by the Engineer orhis nominated assistants.

    01 54 23 STAGING AND SCAFFOLDING

    The Contractor shall provide, erect and maintain all staging and scaffolding(exterior and interior) for all trades for their use during the construction ofthe Building. Staging and scaffolding shall be of approved design, erectedand removed by experienced stage builders and shall have all accidentprevention devices required by Government Laws.

    Such staging and scaffolding shall be erected in sufficient time and in aproper sequence so as not to delay the works. Subcontractors shall schedule

    and commence their work so that Building progress is not delayed orobstructed once staging and scaffolding becomes available.

    The above facilities viz. Construction Elevators and Hoist and Staging andScaffolding, shall be constructed and maintained in accordance with theapplicable requirements of Government Authorities and designed to complywith the Standards and/or statically proven methods.

    01 56 00 TEMPORARY BARRIERS AND ENCLOSURES

    a) TEMPORARY COVERINGS

    The Contractor shall provide dust sheets, barriers, guard rails, andwherever practical, leave on fittings their protective tapes, covering,wrapping, corner protectors and the like, after they have beeninstalled until all works in the area where such fitting has beeninstalled, have been completed.

    b) SURFACES AND FINISHES PROTECTION

    The Contractor shall protect finished surfaces, including jambs andsoffit of openings used as passageway or through which materials arehandled, against possible damage resulting from the conduct of workby trades.

    Adequate protective material shall be laid under all materials stored onfinished surfaces and shall be laid before moving material over finishedareas, wheel-borrows used over such areas shall have rubber typewheels.

    Finished surfaces, including factory finished and job-finished itemsshall be clean and not marked upon handing over of the Buildings tothe Owner.

    The Contractor shall without extra compensation, re-finish such spaceswhere surfaces were proved to have been inadequately protected, and

    which are damaged.

    As soon as an area of flooring is finished, it shall be protected by theContractor from dirt and damage by covering as necessary withpolythene & gypsum or by another approved method.

    Waterproofed and roof surfaces shall neither be subjected to traffic,nor be used for storage of materials. Where some activity must takeplace in order to carry out the work, adequate protection, shall beprovided.

    01 66 00 PRODUCTS, MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

    All items shall be at the best quality normally used for the purpose of goodcommercial practice and shall be the product of reputable manufacturers.

    a) PRODUCTS

    Products shall be unused and include all materials, components, units,accessories, equipment, fixtures and the like required for the execution ofthe work and shall be of the best quality of their respective kinds. Thoseproducts for which a standard is stated shall comply therewith.

    b) MATERIALS

    All materials required for the work shall be new, unused, of perfect stock andshall be so elected for proper and intended use.

    c) EQUIPMENT

    Each component of equipment shall have the manufacturer's name, addressand catalogue number on a nameplate securely affixed in a conspicuousposition. The nameplate of a distribution agent only shall not be accepted.

    d) DELIVERY

    Other than bulk materials which shall be delivered in appropriate containers,all products shall be delivered in suitable unopened containers, bags,bundles, packets or other standard packaging which is designed to protectthe products from any damage during transit from the place of manufactureto the site.

    Deliveries shall be made to suit the agreed construction programme, and anyspecial handling or storage requirements shall be carried out in accordance

    with the manufacturer's written conditions. Particular care shall be taken toensure that no damage is caused by climatic or atmospheric conditionsduring transportation. All deliveries shall be identified with the name, typeand grade of material and properly marked for the site along with the anyother specified or requested classification.

    e) INSPECTION OF PRODUCTS AND MATERIALS

    All products, materials and equipment shall be inspected before incorporationin the works in regard to their compliance with the Project Documents andwith the approved samples. Any item which is found to be unacceptable shallbe rejected and shall be replaced accordingly without any delay to the time

    schedule of the project. The approval or objection of the Engineer or hisnominated assistants shall in no way detract from the Contractor'sresponsibility.

    f) STORAGE

    Materials and products shall be stored in an approved manner to avoiddamage and contact with contaminated substances or surfaces. Perishablematerials shall not be exposed to damaging elements. Storageaccommodation shall be approved by the Engineer or his nominatedassistants and access for inspection and identification of deliveries andsamples for testing shall be available to the Engineer or his nominatedassistants at all times.

    g) ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS

    If the Contractor proposes to use a product, which while suitable for theintended use deviates in any way from the detailed requirements of theProject Documents, he shall inform the Engineer or his nominated assistantsin writing of the nature of such deviations at the time the product issubmitted for approval and shall request a written approval of the deviation

    in accordance with the stipulations of the Contract.

    Any additional costs, or any loss or damage arising from the substitution ofany product or method for those originally specified shall be borne by theContractor, notwithstanding approval or acceptability of such substitution bythe Engineer or his nominated assistants. If substitutions are accepted, theContractor shall have responsibility of co-ordination with all other work, toensure compatibility and fit.

    If any name of firm or propriety brands or articles are inserted in thesespecification they should be read as an indication of the class or quality of

    materials and workmanship required, but do not preclude the use of othermaterials which are equal in quality, performance and appearance to thatspecified.

    Should the contractor wish to obtain the materials from firms or sourcesother than those specified, prior approval in writing of every item must beobtained from the Engineer or his nominated assistants. Should this approvalnot be given the contractor shall be required to provide the specified articlesor materials at no extra cost to the Owner.

    h) PRIORITY TO THE KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN

    The Contractor shall give priority to products manufactured in the Kingdomof Bahrain which fulfill the purpose and comply with the specifications. Forproducts which are not manufactured locally preference shall be given tolocal agents over those which have no local agent.

    i) GUARANTEES

    Where special guarantees for periods exceeding the period of Maintenance asrequired by the Project Documents, the Contractor shall obtain a writtenguarantee, addressed to Owner, from the manufacturer of firm supplying thematerials, equipment, components and the like and/or doing the work andshall deliver same to Engineer or his nominated assistants at preliminaryhanding-over. The guarantee shall state that workmanship, materials,equipment, components and the like and/or installation are guaranteed forthe specified period from the date of final handing-over of the project andthat any defects that may arise during the specified period will remain theContractor's responsibility and shall be made good at the expense of theguarantor, upon written notice from the Engineer or his nominated assistantsto do so.

    j) SAMPLES

    The Contractor shall furnish for approval, with reasonable promptness, allsamples as specified or directed by the Engineer or his nominated assistantsand in particular samples of all internal and external finishes described in theProject Documents. The Engineer or his nominated assistants shall check andapprove such samples with reasonable promptness for conformance with thedesign concept of the works and for compliance with the information given inthe Project Documents. One approved sample will be retained by theEngineer or his nominated assistants and the remainder returned to theContractor. All works shall be done in accordance with the approved samples.

    Samples shall be of adequate size to permit evaluation of the material by the

    Engineer or his nominated assistants, where variations in colour, texture,dimensions or other characteristics are to be expected, the Contractor shallsubmit samples showing the maximum range of variations. Productsexceeding an acceptable range of variation of the approved samples shall berejected by the Engineer or his nominated assistants and replaced by theContractor.

    Samples shall be furnished so as not to delay fabrication, allowing theEngineer or his nominated assistants reasonable time, for consideration ofthe sample submitted.

    k) CERTIFICATES AND TEST REPORTS

    The Contractor shall present to the Engineer or his nominated assistantsprior to delivery, certificates confirming that the quality of products to besupplied by a particular manufacturer or company for incorporation in theworks complies with standards as required in Project Documents.

    The Contractor shall bear the costs or any of the following tests:

    a) Those clearly specified in the Contract.b) Tests mentioned in the Specifications.c) Those involving load testing or tests to meet specification

    requirements.

    01 70 00 CONTRACT CLOSE-OUT

    Upon completion of the works the Contractor shall restore all items coveredby the Contract to the satisfaction of the Engineer or his nominatedassistants.

    Care shall be taken not to use any cleaning materials which may causedamage to the surface to be cleaned. The Contractor shall also take allnecessary precautions to keep the works and site free from vermin during

    construction and he shall leave the works vermin free on completion.

    01 78 23 AS-BUILT DRAWINGS, O & M MANUALS & GUARANTEES

    The Contractor shall, at all times, keep on site, a copy of all drawings andspecifications, addenda, variation orders, approved shop drawings andapproved samples together with copies of all Building, mechanical, electricaland public safety codes and relevant standards applicable to the works. Allsuch material shall be made available to the Engineer or his nominatedassistants.

    The mechanical and electrical subcontractors shall each keep on site, at alltimes, a separate set of prints of the drawings showing their parts of thework, on which shall be noted, neatly, accurately and promptly as workprogresses, the exact physical location and configuration of the works asactually installed, including any revision or deviations from the ProjectDocuments.

    At the completion of the work, the Contractor shall, at his expense, supplythe Engineer or his nominated assistants with reproducible copies (4 sets) ofAs Built drawings along with soft copies including O&M Manuals andGuarantees.

    The Contractor and the sub-contractors shall prepare these reproduciblecopies neatly and legibly, so as to show clearly the way in which the workwas actually constructed.     SITE INVESTIGATION:

    It is the contractor's responsibility to determine soil conditions within the siteboundary. No claims will be entertained on the grounds of the contractorfailing to verify the actual ground conditions.

    EXISTING SERVICES:

    Make all necessary enquiries to locate and protect existing services when

    working on any part of the site.

    UNDERGROWTH:

    Clear site of bushes, scrubs and undergrowth. Grub up and dispose of largeroots. Remove and dispose of all soil containing vegetable matter.

    MATERIAL ARISING:

    The excavation and surplus earth and other materials obtained from the site,shall remain to be the property of the Client other than that used for filling at

    the site, unless the Contractor:-

    i) Is instructed to remove them from the site or,

    ii) Purchases them at a price to be agreed.

    ADJACENT EXCAVATIONS:

    Underground services must be set out so that their excavations do notencroach below a line drawn at an angle of 45 degrees from the horizontalfrom the nearest lower edge of Building foundations. If this condition cannotbe met, obtain instructions before proceeding.

    Where an excavation encroaches below a line drawn at an angle of 45degrees from the horizontal from the nearest formation level of anotherhigher excavation, all work within that zone including backfilling must becompleted before the higher excavation is made.

    EXCAVATED FORMATION:

    Excavated formations are to be inspected by Engineer or his nominatedassistants before new work is laid on them.

    Give Engineer or his nominated assistants not less than 24 hours notice ofwhen excavations will be ready for inspection. If, after inspection, surfacesbecome unsuitable due to water or other causes, excavate further andbackfill with approved material all at the contractor's own expense. Placeconcrete or other fill as soon as possible after inspection to preventdeterioration due to water or other causes.

    Trim excavation to required profiles and levels. Remove all loose material.

    EARTHWORK SUPPORT:The Contractor shall allow for upholding the sides of excavations, and submit

    proposed method of support to the approval of the Engineer or his nominatedassistants.

    The Contractor shall furnish, put in place and maintain such sheetings,bracings etc. as may be necessary to support the sides of the excavation andto prevent any movement of earth which could in any way diminish the widthof the excavation to less than that necessary for proper construction, orcould otherwise injure or delay the work, or endanger adjacent structures.

    DE-WATERING:i) Refer soil investigation report for ground water table level. The

    contractor has therefore to include in his price all expenses incurred inde-watering the site and keeping the excavated area dry and workableat all times during the progress of works until such a time as thestructure, waterproofing and backfill is at a height to be unaffected byground water from whatever source.

    ii) Keep and maintain ground water table at least 500mm below thedeepest point of excavation.

    iii) Do not disturb materials in and also around excavation while pumping.

    iv) Obtain approval of location of any sumps and fill with approved

    materials when no longer required.

    Permanent drainage system is not to be used for disposal of water fromexcavations without approval from relevant Authorities. De-watering methodand method of statement to be submitted to the Engineer or his nominatedassistants for approval with appropriate calculation if requested by theEngineer or his nominated assistants.

    GENERAL

    a) All materials and workmanship shall comply with the relevant BritishStandard or Code of Practice except as amended herein and shouldapply equally to insitu and precast concrete.

    b) The Contractor shall submit to the Engineer or his nominatedassistants samples of all materials proposed to be used for the works,together with a list of suppliers to be employed. The Engineer or hisnominated assistants consent in writing shall be obtained to all suchsamples and sources of supply before concreting work is put in hand.No changes shall subsequently be made without the Engineer'sapproval. The Engineer or his nominated assistants shall have accessto all sources of supply for the purpose of inspecting and taking

    samples.

    c) Concrete mixes indicated assume no adverse ground conditions orimpure constituents in the concrete. All relevant tests shall be carriedout prior to construction and the results presented to the Engineer orhis nominated assistants for approval. Precautions shall be takenwhere necessary under a further specification prior to any worksproceeding.

    The Contractor shall produce all shop drawings and schedules asrequired by the Engineer, completion of the works and record drawings

    of the as built works, all to be submitted for the Engineer or hisnominated assistants Approval.

    d) The Contractor shall submit to the Engineer or his nominatedassistants, detailed bar bending schedules, details of construction

    joints and proposed location, design and details of form work andscaffolding and details of measures of protecting adjacent structuresduring execution.

    MATERIALS

    a) CEMENT

    All cement for work above ground slab level shall be 'Ordinary PortlandCement' of an approved brand and complying with BS 12 or ASTM-C150-Type I. All cement for work below ground level or in contact with soil shall be'Sulphate Resistant Portland Cement' complying with BS 4027 or ASTM-C150-Type V and shall be of a brand approved by the Engineer or hisnominated assistants.

    In addition all cement used in the works shall be low alkali cement containingless than 0.6% alkali (expressed as Na20 + 0.658 K20). Cement shall bedelivered in manufacturer's sealed branded bags or barrels each consignmentaccompanied by the manufacturer's test certificates. Damaged bags or barreland any cement the Engineer or his nominated assistants considersunsatisfactory shall be rejected.

    Each bag shall be used on the day of opening. Bags opened on the previousday shall be rejected. All rejected cement including that which has becomeaffected by damp conditions is to be removed from site immediately.

    All cement shall be stored in a suitable weatherproof Building or silo. Baggedcement is to be stored off the ground and it shall be used up in the order inwhich it is delivered to site.

    Different grades of cements shall be stored in separate areas. Cement

    temperature shall not exceed 35 Degree C when used.

    Cement shall not be used after 6 months from its manufacture date or afterit has been held in store for 3 months, unless it is tested and satisfies therelevant BS or ASTM Standard. Each re-test certificate shall be valid for aperiod of 6 months.

    Each consignment of cement delivered to the site must be accompanied by acertificate showing the place and date of manufacture and the results ofstandard tests carried out on the bulk supply from which the cement wasobtained.

    Notwithstanding the above requirements and tests the Engineer or hisnominated assistants may reject any cement which in his opinion isunsatisfactory for any reason whatsoever.

    b) AGGREGATE GENERALLY

    Aggregate for concrete shall comply with BS 882 except as amended herein.The aggregates used in any concrete mix shall not cause damage orweakening of the concrete and shall be thoroughly washed in an approvedwashing plant and be clean and free from deleterious material.

    c) COARSE AGGREGATES

    Coarse aggregates for concrete shall be crushed, hard, durable stone with atleast 90% of the particles having one or more fractured faces and free of softsubstances or vegetable matter.

    The maximum permitted content of chlorides and sulphates are 0.05% byweight of aggregate (as acid soluble C1) and 0.4% by weight of aggregate(as acid soluble SO3) respectively. The Flakiness Index shall not exceed30%.

    Coarse aggregate shall contain less than 1% by weight of friable particles.Unless otherwise approved by the Engineer coarse aggregate for use in allgrades of concrete shall be provided for batching as single sized aggregate of20mm and 10mm nominal size proportioned in such ratio as to give auniform graduation.

    d) FINE AGGREGATES

    Sand for concrete shall comply with BS 882. For site-mixed concrete it shallhave a grading within the limits of grading M. It shall be washed sand andshall not contain more than 5% voided shells and free of soft substances or

    vegetable matter.

    The maximum permitted concentration of chlorides and sulphates expressedas percentage by weight of dry sand are 0.10% (as acid soluble C1) and0.4% (as acid soluble S03) respectively. The blending of crushed stone finesmay be permitted provided that the blended product meets all therequirements for fine aggregate.

    e) STORAGE OF AGGREGATES

    Aggregates shall be stored and handled only on approved impervious free

    draining platforms with concrete block walls separating different grades anda concrete base shall be provided for all storage areas. Stockpiles shall bebuilt-in 1.50m (maximum) layers and segregation of the aggregatesprevented. All aggregates which have become segregated shall be removed.All aggregates stored on site shall be covered with approved shading devicesagainst direct sunlight until required for mixing. Aggregates which havebecome contaminated whilst stored on site shall be removed. Aggregatesmay be sprayed with clean cold water complying with Clause 3.7b prior tomixing.

    f) WATER

    Water for use in concrete and mortar mixing and curing shall be obtainedfrom an approved source and shall be of such a quality as not to affect (1)the setting time, strength and durability of the concrete or mortar (2) theappearance of hardened concrete or mortar by discoloration of efflorescenceand (3) the reinforcement at any age of the concrete or mortar.Water shallbe clean, demineralised, blended or unblended, with a pH between 6.5 and8.0 and shall be tested in accordance with BS 3148. The following limits shallnot be exceeded.

    Water shall be as cold as possible and stored in approved, clean, coveredcontainers painted white which are protected from sun, wind and dust andfrom contamination by any other source. Pipe work for water shall, whereverpossible, be protected from the sun and insulated. Crushed ice may be usedbut with the strict supervision of the Engineer or his nominated assistantsonly.

    g) REMOVAL OF REJECTED MATERIALS FROM SITE

    Materials rejected by the Engineer or his nominated assistants shall beremoved from site within 48 hours of written notice of such rejection.

    h) ADMIXTURES

    1. Admixtures may only be used with the prior approval in writing of theEngineer or his nominated assistants.

    2. Approved admixtures shall be used in accordance with themanufacturer's recommendations, shall be dispensed by approvedequipment which provides a visible means of checking each dose, and

    shall comply with the relevant British Standards.

    3. The proposed dosages, the manufacturer's technical information andthe results of trial mixes shall be submitted to the Engineer or hisnominated assistants before approval is given.

    4. When more than one admixture is to be used in a concrete, thecompatibility of the various admixtures shall have been ascertained bystandard tests and certified by the manufacturer(s).

    5. No admixture containing calcium chloride shall be used in any waywhatsoever.

    REINFORCING STEEL

    1. Reinforcement shall comply with the requirements of B.S. 4449, "Hotrolled steel bars for the reinforcement of concrete", B.S.4461 "Coldworked steel bars for the reinforcement of concrete", ASTM A615 ORB.S. 4483 "Steel mesh fabric". High tensile bars shall be rounddeformed bars or equivalent. Reinforcement shall be cut and bent inaccordance with B.S. 4466.

    2. All reinforcement shall be clean and free from materials that may causecorrosion of the reinforcement or the disintegration of the concrete andfrom pitting, loose rust, mill scale, paint, oil, grease and other materialthat may impair the bond between the concrete and the reinforcement.

    3. Sheets of mesh fabric shall be flat unless specified as bent and anytendency to curve or twist shall be corrected by the Contractor before

    fixing. Mesh fabric shall not be supplied in rolls.

    4. The Contractor shall furnish the Engineer or his nominated assistantswith manufacturer's certificates for the reinforcing steel intended foruse, including test results of the physical and chemical properties asrequired in the relevant standard, all prior to use in the works.

    5. Reinforcement shall be stored on properly constructed racks at least150mm above ground level. The storage, cutting and bending of steelreinforcement shall be carried out under cover on an approved, freedraining concrete platform. The method of storing shall be such as to

    prevent contamination or damage by weather or accident. All steelreinforcement shall be protected from humidity and salt laden dewswhen stored.

    WORKMANSHIP

    a) REINFORCEMENT

    1. Dirt, rust, concrete, scale, paint, oil, grease, salts etc. shall beremoved from the reinforcement by sand blasting or other approvedtechnique.

    2. Reinforcement shall be bent when cold by hand or by using anapproved hand or power operated bending machine. When bending,the reinforcement should be subjected to a constant even load and notan impact load.

    3. Welding of reinforcement will only be allowed with the specific writtenpermission of the Engineer or his nominated assistants.

    6. Concrete shall be placed within 1 day of fixing reinforcement and thereinforcement shall be protected with plastic sheeting or tarpaulins inthe interim period.

    c) BENDING SCHEDULES

    The Contractor shall if so instructed, prepare for his own use bar bendingschedules from the information given on the drawings and in theseSpecifications. These schedules shall be submitted to the Engineer or hisnominated assistants for approval, which shall in no way relieve theContractor of his responsibility for the correctness of such schedules.

    Lapping of bars shall not be permitted except where shown and as indicatedon the drawings or approved by the Engineer or his nominated assistants.

    Where such laps are approved, no additional payment will be made for extra

    steel required. Laps shall be as directed by the Engineer or his nominatedassistants.

    d) QUALITY CONTROL

    Type of Reinforcement

    The reinforcement shall comply with the relevant British Standards as givenbelow:

    Mild steel, plain rolled bars BS 4449

    High yield steel hot rolled deformed bars BS 4449High yield steel, cold worked deformed bars BS 4449Fabric reinforcement, indented or deformed welded wires BS 4483Cold reduced steel wire BS 4482

    Provide the Engineer with certified copies of mill test reports for reinforcingsteel, showing physical and chemical analysis, minimum 8 weeks prior tocommencing reinforcing work.

    Inform the Engineer of proposed source of material to be supplied.

    Two copies of certificates verifying that the reinforcement complies with this

    Specification shall be given by the Contractor to the Engineer in accordancewith the British Standard as appropriate for each consignment ofreinforcement from each source.All testing for reinforcement shall be carried out in a laboratory acceptable tothe Engineer.

    The frequency of testing shall be as set out in BS 4449 or as directed by theEngineer.

    Laboratory testing of reinforcement shall include tensile, bend, re bend andchemical analysis.

    e) SUBMITTALS

    1. Submit shop drawings including placing of reinforcement in accordancewith the General Specification

    2. Indicate on shop drawings, bar bending details, lists quantities ofreinforcement, sizes, spacings, locations of reinforcement andmechanical splices if approved by the Engineer, with identifying codemarks to permit correct placement without reference to structuraldrawings. Indicate sizes, spacings and locations of chairs, spacers and

    hangers. Prepare reinforcement drawings in accordance with theEngineers instructions.

    3. Detail lap lengths and bar development lengths in accordance withBS8110:1. Provide tension lap splices where indicated.

    4. Bar Schedules

    The Contractor shall schedule the reinforcement in accordance with BS 8110and BS 8666:2000, the information on the Drawings, this Specification, andsubsequent instructions.

    The Contractor shall include for all necessary chairs and spacers, and hisprice and rates for steel thus shown shall include for these.

    These drawings shall be filly co-ordained with the architectural and MEPworks and shall show all openings for services and up stands or plinths forequipment and cast-in items.

    Bending schedules and shop drawings shall be submitted for the Engineersapproval. Two weeks shall be allowed for his consideration of this initialsubmission.

    The Contractor shall correct these schedules and shop drawings and resubmitas reasonably required to ensure a high standard of work. He shallprogramme his work and submit schedules for approval allowing time forsuch verification, rectification and resubmission as necessary. Such approvalshall not relieve the Contractor of his responsibility for the accuracy of suchschedules and shop drawings.

    No concreting shall be allowed to proceed until such time that the drawingsand bending schedules for that particular section of works are approved. Anydelay incurred in obtaining approval shall be the Contractors responsibility.

    f) CONCRETE MIX

    1. Concrete Grades - Table 1

    2. The concrete shall be capable of being transported and readilycompacted by the approved methods to a dense impermeable masswithout segregation, bleeding or plastic cracking. Subsequently, theconcrete shall be durable and free from crazing, thermal cracks, dryingshrinkage cracks, or any other cracks whatsoever. The slump shall bekept to the minimum compatible with approved placing andcompacting requirements.

    3. Concrete mixes shall have the minimum cement content necessary tomeet the specified water cement ratio, workability and compressivestrength requirements. The maximum cement content should notexceed 500 Kg per cubic metre.

    4. The mix proportions shall be adjusted to achieve the maximum densityfrom the materials in use. (With imported aggregate and dredged sandthis density is normally greater than 2520 Kg/m3 for mixes grade 45and 30).

    5. In-situ concrete shall be dense and well compacted to a minimum of

    98% of the density of the relevant test cubes.

    6. The total chloride content of concrete containing embedded steel shallnot exceed the values given in the following table when determined asnitric acid soluble chloride by the Volhard Titration Method.

    8. TRIAL MIXES

    a. Unless the Contractor proposes to use concrete from an approved

    ready-mix source, he shall perform trial mixes on site in the presenceof the Engineer or his nominated assistants for the various classes ofconcrete specified, using the proposed plant, equipment and batchingand mixing methods.

    b. No structural concrete shall be placed in the works until the relevantmix has been approved in writing by the Engineer or his nominatedassistants.

    c. Before any grade of concrete is placed in the works three trial mixes ofthe grade shall be made to the submitted mix proportions and fromeach mix six cubes shall be made, three for testing at 7 days andthree at 28 days and the results submitted to the Engineer or hisnominated assistants as soon as possible.

    d. The mix proportions shall be accepted for use in the works only if the28 days cube strengths exceed the characteristic strength compliancerequirements by at least 4N/mm2.

    e. These requirements to perform trial mixes may be relaxed by theEngineer on production of satisfactory evidence of trial mixespreviously approved with the same materials used in the sameproportions.

    f. The Contractor shall forward full details of the mix to the Engineer or

    his nominated assistants for approval. When the mix has beenapproved, no variations shall be made in the proportions, the originalsource of the cement and aggregates or in the type, size and gradingzone of the latter without the consent of the Engineer or his nominatedassistants who will require further tests to be made.

    g. No approval by the Engineer or his nominated assistants of a trial mixshall relieve the Contractor of the responsibility of maintaining theworking strength required. The Engineer or his nominated assistantsmay also require practical tests to be made on the site by filling trialmoulds to confirm the suitability of the mix for the works. In these

    tests, the type of plant used and the form-work face to the mould shallbe similar in all respects to those intended for use in works.h. During protection the Engineer or his nominated assistants will require

    trial mixes to be made before any substantial change is made in thematerials or in the proportions of the material used.

    i. When the Contractor proposes to use concrete from a 'ready-mix'source, he shall submit the full mix design for approval. The Engineermay call for trial mixes prior to granting approval.

    9. MIXING OF CONCRETE

    (i) SITE MIXED CONCRETE:

    1 . Site mixed concrete shall be weigh batched and mixed in an approvedmixing machine fitted with an approved water metering device.Volume batching will only be allowed with the specific permission, inwriting, of the Engineer or his nominated assistants.

    2 . The weighing and water-dispensing mechanisms shall be maintained ingood order. Their accuracy shall be maintained with the tolerancesdescribed in B.S. 1305 and checked against accurate weighs andvolumes when required by the Engineer or his nominated assistants.

    3 . The weights of cement and each size of aggregate as indicated by themechanisms + 2 percent of the respective weights per batch agreedby the Engineer or his nominated assistants . The weights of the fineand coarse aggregates shall be adjusted to allow for the free watercontained in them. The water to be added to the mix shall be reducedby the quantity of free water contained in the fine and coarseaggregates, which shall be determined by the Contractor by a methodapproved by the Engineer or his nominated assistants immediatelybefore mixing begins, and further as the Engineer or his nominatedassistants requires.

    4 . Unless otherwise agreed by the Engineer or his nominated assistants,concrete shall be mixed in a batch type mixer manufactured inaccordance with B.S. 1305 or in a batch type mixer, a specimen of

    which has been tested in accordance with B.S. 3963 and having amixing performance within the limits of table 6 of B.S. 1305. Whereappropriate the batch capacity, method of loading, mixing time anddrum speed shall conform to the details furnished in accordance withthe requirements of B.S. 3963 for the mix which corresponds mostclosely to the mix proportions being used.

    The mixing blades of pan mixers shall be maintained within the

    tolerance s specified by the manufacturer of the mixer and the bladesshall be replaced when it is no longer possible to maintain thetolerances by adjustments.

    5 . Mixers which have been out of use for more than 30 minutes shall bethoroughly cleaned before any fresh concrete is mixed in thatmachine. Mixing plant shall be thoroughly cleaned before changingfrom one type of mix to another or before changing from onemanufacturer of cement to another.

    6 . Controls shall be provided to ensure that no additional water can beadded during mixing except with the approval of the Engineer or his

    nominated assistants. The entire batch shall be discharged before themixer is recharged. In no case shall the mixing time be less than 2minutes.

    7 . A concrete slab with adequate drainage shall be provided as a workingplatform unless alternative arrangements are specifically permitted bythe Engineer or his nominated assistants in writing.

    8 . The concrete shall be placed in its final position within 90 minutes ofthe time when the cement first came into contact with water or wettedaggregates. The re-mixing and re-tempering of stiffened concrete isnot permitted.

    (ii) READY-MIXED CONCRETE:

    1. Ready-mixed concrete will not be accepted for use unless approved inwriting by the Engineer or his nominated assistants.

    2. The name and address of the works of the supplier is to be submittedto the Engineer or his nominated assistants and acceptance of the useof such supplier shall be obtained prior to placing the order.Notwithstanding any such authorization by the Engineer or hisnominated assistants the Contractor shall take full responsibility forthe ready mixed concrete complying with the requirements of the

    Specification.

    3. The concreting materials shall comply with the requirements of thisSpecification and shall be tested in accordance with the Engineer or hisnominated assistants instructions. The cost of such testing will be theresponsibility of the Contractor. Test cubes shall be taken on site bythe Contractor.

    4. The Contractor is to ensure that a record is kept at the Supplier'sworks of the exact time when the concreting materials are mixed.
