Malaysia had also performed poorly in anearlier PISA assessment which measuredhow students in 65 countries did inmathematics, science and reading.According to the PISA's 2012 results,Malaysian students scored below average orranked 52 out of the 65 countries. 21st CENTURY SKILLS FOR STUDENTS
-
Education is no longer about listening to the
teacher talk and absorbing the information.
They have to learn how to learn on their own.
Teacher would act as a facilitator for the students.
Learning is about discovery, not the
memorization of facts
Students will need to be able to acquire new
information
The main source of knowledge should not be
the teacher.
Sudent-centered
1
-
Students learn to use the inquiry method, and to collaborate with others
Teachers are facilitators of student learning
Student centered
Integration with other subjects
The students are learning by doing
Focus on learning how to learn, not learning by memorizing information .
Students use the Information they have learned
Students learn how to ask the right questions,
how to conduct investigation, how to find answers, and how to use information.
Characteristics of a 21st Century Instruction
-
Collaborative
Students should be encouraged to work together to discover information, piece it together, and construct
meaning.
Students must learn how to collaborate with others.
Schools should also be collaborating with other educational institutions to share information and
learn about different practices or methods that have been developed.
Teachers should be willing to alter their instructional methods in light of new advancements.
2
-
Context
Student-centered does not mean
that the teacher gives up all
control of the classroom. While
students are encouraged to learn
in different ways, the teacher still
provides guidance as to the skills
that need to be acquired.
The teacher can make a point of
helping students to understand
how the skills they are building
can be applied in their lives.
Students will be much more
motivated to learn something
that they can see the value in.
3
-
Encourage students to
join committees or take
part in school projects
integrated with
society
Education needs to help students take
part in this global community and find
ways of impacting more than just their
neighbourhood. They should also be
learning about how they can help and
protect a world further away from them,
but also closer all the time.
Helping the community
around them with
activities

The School Teacher as Change Agent
Patient yet persistentClear Vision
Knowledgeable and leads by exampleStrong relationships built on trust
Asks tough questions
-
The teacher is the change agent. The student is the knowledge worker, says Fullan. The developmental role now is helping students to become self-learners. With the teacher not playing a passive role, but a very active change-agent role.
They need to think of their profession asa collaboration profession, says Fullan..but its not just about being good inmy own classroom, but being a part of ateam. Teachers should know that they areentering a profession with a big mandateand moral responsibility and the way tofulfill that mandate is by working togetherwith other teachers and leaders.
-
To prepare students for their future.we need to first understand what the future looks like..
Jika kita gagal memahami keperluan
generasi hari ini, kita menghadapi
risiko tentang keberkesanan usaha-
usaha dalam mendidik mereka.

Yasmin Noorul Amin, the Chemistry teacher at SMK La Salle Petaling Jaya is the sole Malaysian among 50 teachers worldwide to be nominated for the prestigious Varkey GEMS Foundation Global Teacher Prize.Once acquainted with teaching, I fell in love with it, I found the training fun, but the real enjoyment came when I started teaching, To her, a good teacher should not only be well versed in the subject and effective in imparting knowledge, but must also always be there for the studentsYou cant take teaching as a profession. It has to be a calling. You need to love what you are doing. You have to have genuine love for your students and you cant treat them as clients. My mobile phone is always on. It gets especially busy when examinations are nearShe finds it very satisfying to see her students enjoy learning. When my students are doing experiments, it gets a bit noisy, but I feel happy because I know they are enjoying themselves, she said.
