4/11/2008 16:43 Charles Fulton [email protected] Joined the unit at Ft Hood, Tx, deployed via C-130 to Pleiku (Camp Holloway), from Bergstrom, AFB, stopping at every place to be stopped at enroute<br> No AC at Pleiku so I and Lt Nickols hitchhiked to Saigon and found row after row of our trusty steeds. A cool WO told us to pick out which ever we wanted Signed for and headed north without maps but did obtain some hand written freq’s for flight following..<br> Arriving back with our AC, all the other pilots did as we had and thus the co got it’s AC, deployed through out II Corp and went to war As I recall we were the largest aviation company at that time as we covered all of II Corps.<br> Originally deployed to Qui Nhon with the 2nd Plt. Spent most of my time there with the Special Forces at Bong Son till ordered back to Pleiku by our Co CO mid-Oct to solve/stop the accident rate. I had been a B Phase Flt Instr at Ft Rucker since spring of ‘63. Did so. <br> My stomping ground was the SW thru NW quadrant from Pleiku. Was there for the Plei Me and Ia Drang fray’s. Triggered our call sign change to “Head Hunter”with our new CO, Maj Wyatt (some may recall “smiley” setting on the CO’s desk). Our first CO picked “Hershey” as our call sign thus all Plt’s ignored and picked/used their

4/29/2009 17:16 Wayne Ammerman [email protected] Was assigned to 219th at an Army Air Field outside of Ft Hood Texas. We left there in June 1966 for Bergstrom Air Force Base for Camp Holloway, at the time we weren't told as to where we were going, with a number of stops on the way. One of them, Hickam Field in Hawaii, the plane I was on was there for a week due to mechanical problems with our plane. Capt Epperson was our Operations Officer and Lt Rainey was our Asst Operations Officer. They were great of work for and with. All of our officers were great pilots and gave their all. Bob Lindsay, if you get back on this site and remember me get in contact I would like to say hello. Contact is [email protected]. Same with anyone else that was over there in the time frame

1/16/2008 21:21 S. Micah Fowler [email protected] I am the youngest son of Arlon O. Fowler, who enlisted in the Army in 1964 and retired in 1984. Of the little that he has told me of his service to his country for two tours in Vietnam, he remembers being in the headhunters, but is unsure of exact dates, he believes it was in 66 and possibly 68. I am looking to find anyone who might remember him, served with him and would like to share what they remember about him. He is still alive, but now has alzheimers and his memory is failing him somewhat. He has been and is a great father, and I am wanting to tie together a little of his history in order to share that with my children as they grow. Any help would be appreciated and thank you for your service to this country and the world.

1/31/2008 20:16 Phil Phillips [email protected] Hello, friends! My first assignment with the 219th was with the 3rd Platoon at Camp Holloway. Mostly supported the 52nd Artillery (I think). You know, basic recon, adjusting batteries, and that other boring stuff. Went to the 2nd Platoon at Kontum to support MACV. A more interesting mission and lots of pretty country to see. Later went across the river to live with the recon teams and support the CCC mission. New callsign was SPAF-3. A way more interesting mission! Came back to RVN again and flew Otters for the 18th Avn. Co. Supported the B" Team at Pleiku AFB. A good mission. Got out of the military in about 1974

went back to school

and went into the real estate business. My wife

come out to ABQ for a visit sometime. We'll chow down on a great burrito

then head out to Double Eagle Airport

and go looking for commie coyotes on the west mesa. Beers later at the Stoneface. We hope to make another HH reunion or other event in the future. Cheers.... Phil & Ardie Phillips"

7/18/2008 14:30 Carl Washington [email protected] I have not been on this site before but first let say welcome home brothers, I came to camp Holloway with motor pool Sgt Leroy Davis who went to the motor pool, and got all those vehicles on line. The man had been to 35 schools and called himself the Field Marshall" he knew shit. Major Wyatt came up to S-2 and ask me about Leroy and I told him that he is so smart he may have his job The first Ak-47 that you had in your Museum I had let Leroy take it after me 1st mission in Qhi khon and I got my 1st flying hours on the Huey as Gunner For the first hour I killed 2 Sniper that day that had been shooting at the chopper. I also work for and with your Capt. Liaison John Ceri who was in the field the 10 months he was from Quincy Mass. He taught me a lot about soldiering; he was airborne and came up the enlisted rank and the OCS and Pilot School. We shared his tent when Major Harry Sparks Also 70 came down with dysentery one night and we took him to field hospital and that night I came down with the same

I told ceri that I was cold and he said try get some rest I’ll take you down in the morning and also bring Majors Dide bag

well I had the same thing and was in the hospital for 4 days. We left the hospital together and went back to work 30lbs light. I flew WO Olsen who was killed in the plane crash of the 119th Huey when I found out from Major sparks I wanted to go and he said no

and I cried and told him that he could not be

this is hard because I flew with him

but we knew our places on the ground Mr. /Sgt (Smile). While at the Cateaca Tea Plantation one night 219th lost a plane 01 on the airstrip the 2/9th had a 2/1/2 load with ammo across the runway there were no lights. The pilot went down the strip. the young kids didn't have sense to move the truck

they ran. The plane hit the truck on the driver's right rear. The pilot could not get out as I believe his arm and leg was broken and the artillery observer pulled him out of the plane. I ran back to my jeep to pull the plane from trunk I

when an Inf. Maj. from the 25th told me to leave. I wanted to save the plane and ammo. but followed orders I was told. About 20 minutes later I told Major Sparks there was the biggest explosion I had ever seen on the ground

it was the plane and truck exploding. We hit the dirt. In the morning I got up to check there was a crater 30-40 in circumference and 15- 20 feet deep. Those of you out there who remember feel free to contact. Carl Washington formerly

Mass now living in Fl. E-5 always carried the Randle Knife. Check your Journals and get back to me. Sorry I have to go because some of the shits starting get to me."

11/14/2008 20:45 Charley Barnes [email protected] Little did I know how fortunate I was in trading assignments with another member of my flight class, Ernie Stutts. Instead of deploying with the 183rd RAC from Ft Sill, OK I came directly to the 219th RAC in Camp Holloway where they even had flush toilets. It was easy to see that Eucie Spencer took good care of his troops. The first part of my tour was spent with the 4th Platoon as a Section Leader under Sted Davis supporting the 4th Infantry Division. Subsequently I became the initial platoon leader of the 3rd Platoon supporting the 52nd Artillery Group. Learned the construction trade getting a hootch" built for the platoon. Ended up spending 25 years in the Army

retiring in 1988. Hope to see a lot of you at the Ft Rucker reunion in 2009."

12/1/2008 3:50 Larry Hendrickson [email protected] My U6A was in a bunker next to the 219th hanger. One afternoon durning a monsoon, a bolt of lightning hit an O1 loaded with rockets which was pointed at my bunker. None of them went off, so I kept working. A few minutes later a giant blast of wind blew the roof up and off the hanger. Decided that what I was working could wait till the next day and headed back to the barracks.

He will help you set up a blog and you can regale us with war stories to your hearts' content. We can't let our history go unwritten. My Dad, a B24 pilot in WWII left me only a few short paragraphs of memories that couldn't possilby have spanned the 3 years he flew from India over Burma. Take the opportunity to put down for posterity what you did, who you knew, what made you laugh or cry. Share it with the rest of it so that we can leave our children with as complete a picture of a time that America is fast forgetting. We need to remember so that no one forgets what we did.

after an incoming impact

was the sound of Al taking off

5/2/2009 23:32 Don R. Jordan [email protected] Went up to Pleiku in January 67 after the Air Force took over the CV-2B operations in Qui Nhon. Was trained as a Flight Engineer on the Caribou, and as a crew chief on the O-1D. I spent three days on the flight line, and then they found out I could type, so they made me a clerk! Not a bad tour in Vietnam, except for January 7, 1967 at Camp Holloway. We got kicked pretty bad that night. I wrote down the story of my entire three years in the Army. [email protected] I was one of the early Headhunters. From Oct 65 to Mar 66 I flew GEN Westmoreland, Ambassador Lodge, and their staffs throughout Vietnam in U-6s, U-8Ds, and U-8Fs until our new CO decreed that no blankety blank warrant officers are going to fly twin-engine airplanes." I volunteered to join the Headhunters in Mar 66 and served until Apr 67 in Tuy Hoa (North). My tour was highlighted by crashing 12 Oct 66

the day I would have rotated out if I had not extended my tour in country! CPT Marvin Bonner was our platoon leader part of the time. 1LT Bill Adams was in 4th platoon with me

and we saw each other again in Germany 1967-68. After active duty I went to college and stayed in the Guard and Reserve until retiring as a LTC in 1999 after 45 years in uniform. For a civilian career I was a banker for 11 years

then an independent financial adviser (23 years so far)

but I made time to fly corporate and charter part-time over the years. I hung up the headsets probably for the last time in 2004 after flying a King Air B200 for a client for four years."

5/30/2009 20:13 Gene Kobes [email protected] What is still vivid in my mind is an incident I had while commanding the 2nd platoon of the 219th stationed in Kontum, Vietnam.<br><br>It was late afternoon when I received a call to fly a troop from Kontum to Pleiku so that he could catch a C-130 flight in route back to the states on emergency leave. There must have been a number of people involved and aware of the situation because Pleiku airbase tower had me taxi right up to a C-130 with propellers turning. The young troop scrambled out of my humble birddog amidst all those AF big movers and boarded the 130.<br><br>Well now it was getting dark as I took off and I was a little concerned for we did not have runway lights at Kontum. I radioed back to the tower and the operator informed me that he would get the portable GCA up and running. This was a little comforting but as we all know these little gizmos were not the most accurate devices. I reported into the tower over Kontum for landing and was picked up on the GCA. Well then I thought this was not so bad even on a moonless night. <br> <br>Now I am on short final with landing light on an all I am picking up is a row of bunkers. Not good, I added power and informed tower I was doing a go-around. I

I suddenly realized that something was wrong. The aircraft engine sound was getting quieter and quieter. I looked at my airspeed indicator and it was right at the stall line. The mountain top was still much higher and I had

not climbing and over bad guy country was not a good situation. All I could think of doing was to "let go of the controls". An instructor in flight school once told us that an aircraft has an inherent desire to fly. He was right! The torque (P factor)

7/13/2009 16:25 Chris Schaefer [email protected] Thanks for this website. I started out in Pleiku, mostly along the border in support of the Duc Co SF camp, and 3rd Bgd Task Force of the 25th Inf Div at Cateca. When the 4th Inf Div came in, I went with the 3rd Bgd to a place north of Quin Nhon where they engaged a NVA regiment--right in an area occupied by the Korean Tiger Division. Got to stay a couple of nights with the Headhunters in Quin Nhon--they lived in a hotel! What a deal. After that I went to Hue and lived with the Catkillers (220th) for a while (they also lived in a hotel!) and flew Marine observers around the DMZ and that big valley near Laos (Que San?). Then back to Pleiku where Maj Gonzales was our platoon leader, and one of the other pilots was Troy Duplessis from Louisiana. Another was a guy named Walthall. Anyone heard from them? I remember the bird dog pilot that ran into the ammo truck at Cateca (entry 34). I believe the observer that saved the pilot's life was a sergeant from the 3rd Bgd's S-2 section, who later, near Quin Nhon, crashed with one of our other pilots when he hit a tree flying up a valley--the sergeant saved his life too! I also remember the attack on Camp Holloway in Jan 1967 (entry 27) but fortunately was not there--off

4/12/2010 14:26 Michael P Robertson [email protected] I joined the platoon at Qhi Nhon in mid November 1965 and DROSed 367 days later. In those days we did FAC work for the Air Force (no USAF FAC's there until mid 66), supported the Special Forces A teams in the area, supported the MACV advisors in that area and some work with the USN intell center, just down the road from the MACV hotel where we lived. CPT Wally Kell was the platoon commander when I arrived.

2/6/2013 16:29 Ronald Moser [email protected] It is great that information is being gathered about the 219th. I remember several guys but my memory is fading like so many others now. I remember Major Kidd the Co Commander, Captain Dyke, a friend, Captain Taylor, Captain Bohannen, CW3 Fiedler and if I thought hard about it, several others. I remember taking the north mission over from Bohannen & Fiedler. I witnessed the 2 C130's being hit with mortars. I was scrambling to take off at the time. I flew High and low ship with Lt. Conover

10/30/2013 19:40 James Taylir [email protected] My father passed a couple of years ago. My brother and I are looking for I'm information on a downed headhunter that was pulled out by a helicopter from the 119th AHC. My father and the man flying with him have both passed. Both men received wooden headhunters for flying into several enemy gun positions to pull this hero out of harms way. <br><br>My father (CWO3 ret.) Robert Bob" Taylor and the other pilot passed wondering who that man was and whether he survived the war. (My father went on to serve another tour and TDY with the 101st.<br><br>My brother and I are still curious. This would've been around sept of '67 and in the area of Dong Ha (I believe.) Any information you can provide would be helpful. If our supposition is accurate there's a Stars and Stripes article on the incident from 9/24/67 but there's no information on the units or the pilots in that article. The timing seemed to be right though. <br><br>Kind Regards

3/6/2011 12:03 Donald Pedrazzini [email protected] I spent three tours in country starting in March 1968 through December 1971. The first two in fixed wing only and the last in Fixed and Rotary wing. My travels caused me to cross paths with one of your guys Al Morton. After he flew a tour in the Bird Dog he extended and we flew U-21's down in Nha Trang. After we rotated back to Mother Rucker we were 0-1 instructors up until Al had a very serious accident that killed his student. I saw that one of your guys (Dave Miller) made a comment about Al Morton and the silver star. I know what happened to Al, and I wondered if you did. If you DON'T know let me know and I will fill you in on the tragic end of one crazy guy.

5/30/2011 21:00 Victor Scott Hickok [email protected] The unit patch that is displayed in this site is not exactly like the 1966 Unit Patch!!! There were no wings on the HeadHunter!! Our Battalion was the 29th Aviation Battalion out of Nha Trang and its U-6A Beaver was kept at Camp Holloway until it was shipped to Corpus Christi Texas for extensive repairs. I flew a total of 21 hours in combat with the O-1's and the U-6. I also drove and refueled aircraft at both Camp Holloway and the US Airbase at New Plieku Airport. Tiger Mountain was home to the 4th Inf Div. We started with the MACV patch and several months after my arrival were issued the USSARV patch. Then before I departed, we fell under the 1st Aviation Brigade.<br>The CV-2 Caribou unit across the runway was deactivated and aircraft and crews transfered to the US Air Force, I was offered a chance to transfer, but declined. Our next door Unit was a U-1A unit whose motto was :Low, Slow and Reliable!!

Would love to hear from anyone who remembers him. He flew both fixed and helicopter. I just came across the headhunters pin and took this chance. He relived a good bit of Vietnam before he died. 7/30/2011 7:50 Joseph E. Thornton [email protected] 67-68 was an interesting time. In early 1966 I was a young Sergeant on orders for Viet Nam. A year later I had completed OCS, Flight School and was in Viet Nam. During my initial unit check ride and orientation flight I was under fire and asking myself was this what I really wanted to do. A year later the unqualified answer was yes. It really was one of the best years of my military career.

11/23/2012 5:53 Francis Doherty [email protected] Along with Slim and Carolyn Slimowicz, George and Patricia Savani, and Richie Kane, Katie and I attended John Pappas' funeral in October at West Point. John was the inspiration for the cartoons that adorned the walls of the Doghouse. His gentle demeanor and soft voice belied a fierce warrior, a bullet-magnet, and a real gunslinger. I will miss you very much, John. You have left us much too soon. Fly safe, John. Fly safe

11/16/2012 0:27 CW4 R Jim Carpenter [email protected] Please forgive the long winded text but this needed to be told as I observed it.<br>In August, 1970, Cpt John Pappas, a fearless 219th Headhunter was conducting an early morning recon and encountered an enemy force moving along a trail some 15-20 kilometers West of the Plei Me SF camp. John knew that Checkmate (A Troop, 7/17th Cav out of Camp Holloway) was refueling at the SF base while conducting recon missions to the West toward Duc Co. Checkmate had a standard frequency on VHF where fellow aviators could always find us as John did that morning. When he called, we were already enroute from Cp Holloway with the standard package of two teams of two Cobras and two LOHs and the lift platoon with the aerial rifle platoon of usually 24 soldiers. The 47th ARVN Regt was conducting sweeps to the West from the SF camp and were available to us as a Ready Reaction Force. When we arrived over the contact area, Cpt Pappas was flying low along the stream leading to an (abandoned?) Montagnard hamlet. No one was firing at the Birddog until we showed up which was a good indication to the NVA of something other than smoke marking rounds coming at them. On the initial pass, neither of our Scouts (LOHs) took fire but as the lead

the radios quieted just enough to get the downed aircraft call from the first scout who crashed into the rice paddy. His wingman was doing everything possible to provide suppressive fire on the third machinegun position when he was also hit and crashed into the rice paddy as some distance from the lead scout. In the midst of all this pandemonium

Cpt Pappas flew his "unarmed" O-1 right over the top of the two downed LOHs at an altitude below treetop level. John was successful in drawing fire away from the downed crews long enough for them to find better protected positions. Additionally

the Cobras were able to pinpoint and destroy the enemy forces moving toward the downed aircraft. Of course

Cpt Pappas flew right between the lead cobra and his intended target which livened up the radio chatter. At this point

the C&C Huey was armed with a Cal.50 machinegun and a skilled gunner. The Scout Platoon Leader

Cpt Bare had arrived on site and landed to pickup the second scout crew. Bare's LOH took a lot of hits and barely made it out of the immediate area before he made a forced landing due to fuel loss. Major Rackley landed at their site

the lift platoon inserted the ARPs near the hamlet as Air Force Close Air Support (fast movers) began bombing runs on the opposite side of the rice paddies where the NVA had hidden their weapons caches. Our Cobra team was releived

they had a bad day when the Headhunters found them.<br>I went looking for Cpt Pappas that evening at the Headhunter Lounge but he was not to be found. I know he survived the action as spirits were high amongst the Headhunters and Major

Don't Take Your Love to Town" played over and over and over.<br>In the following months

I had on occasion

to provide a select few of the Headhunters with 2.75" Flechette rounds for their 4 launch tubes. I am sure the enemy forces got a surprise or two from those encounters. While I did not truly enjoy my tour in RVN that much

I have nothing but the fondest memories of the Headhunters

At Camp Holloway we were attached to the 52nd CAB which included the 119th avn Co and headquarters Company of the 52nd as well as the 219th. The 203rd never received it's equipment. It was stolen in Saigon. I was on flight status and flew missions with every unit in the 52nd CAB. My ETS was in May, 1966 and I left Camp Holloway three weeks before scheduled rotation. It was short in duration ---his engine seized and he had to force land in the Jungle. We were close to base with much support and rescue was swift. For Arlie it was another day at the office!!!!!! For the rest of us it was hair raising experience!!!!<br><br>Arlie was funny, folksy and a great drinking buddy. 11/28/2011 23:21 Bob Brewster [email protected] We lost a very good friend November 19, 2011. Arlie Deaton was a very special person. My wife, Ruth, was an Army nurse in Pleiku. I was in flight school at Ft. Rucker, AL. As commanding officer of the 219th, Arlie gave Ruth all the names of the right people for me to contact so that when I arrived in RVN, I could go directly to the 219th. This kindness allowed Ruth & I to be close to each other. Sure, it was a war going on but that did not stop Arlie from thinking of other people. We have been married 41 years and without Arlie this probably would not have happened. Thank you Arlie and thank you to the Deaton family for sharing him with us.

12/21/2011 21:34 Paul N Hickert [email protected] I am currently writing a book of my memories of Vietnam, centererd around Pleiku/Holoway and Cheo Reo where I was located for nine months. I am trying to locate my crew chief at the time, Spec 4 David Kerschner. David is a central character in one chapter where I inject some humour about his shooting ability from the backseat. David if you are out there, or if anyone knows his whereabouts, call me at 623-935-2174.

11/29/2011 9:59 Dave Miller [email protected] Penny & I send our condolences to Arlie's family on his passing. I regret that I didn't have the opportunity to serve, under Arlie's command, in the 219th - our tours with the company didn't coincide. I am honored & thankful to have gotten to know him while attending our Headhunter reunions. Arlie lives in our hearts and Penny & I look forward to how we honor him at the next reunion. Goodbye for now, Arlie.

11/29/2011 16:31 Bob Jackson [email protected] Arlie Deaton, Headhunter Emeritus. Second coming to Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep squadron. Arlie's way of life was simple. Step up and be a man, fly like a bird, hunt like an eagle and say what you mean. This man could motivate a rock. There may be more noteworthy individuals with better recognition in the world. But I don't know of many that could hold a candle to this man's mantra. Arlie, you have touched so many of our hearts and soles during our time together. Indeed, you have given us a crash course in staying alive, doing our job well and becoming to know what life is really about...... I am beyond proud to have had the pleasure of serving under your command and later becoming your friend !

11/29/2011 19:14 Phil Phillips [email protected] Knowing Maj. Arlie Deaton and serving under him was an honor and a priviledge. He had ALL the qualities of a great leader, including patriotism, high professional standards, a strong work ethic, patience, understanding, and a sense of humor. I learned so much from this man. I will continue to think about him often.

12/5/2011 19:55 Charles Dillon [email protected] In remembrance of Maj. Arlie Deaton I would like to comment that he was a soldier's soldier". In mhy opinion he was a commander that cared for all of his troops. I was fortunate to know him for only a short time and there was none finer. His being our Commander adds to the heritage and legacy of the 219th. RAC."

5/26/2013 17:24 JOE CABRERA [email protected] I was a member of the Security Platoon at MACV Compound, Kontum, RVN, STZ24.<br>I had the honor and pleasure of being a backseater on a couple of missions. Though I only spent a total of about 10 hours, I can assure you, they left a lasting impression on me. You don't easily forget throwing grenades out of the windows on a rocket run, and looking up to where the sky should be, and seeing the ground, and visa versa. If I had the chance to do it again, I would leap at it, only this time, for a few more missions. Welcome Home! Joe

6/27/2014 20:57 Paul A. Marchesseault [email protected] I'm looking for anyone who can help me confirm that 1st Lieutenant Willie J. Ridgeway of B Battery, 5th Battalion, 27th Artillery regiment in Vietnam circa 1968-69 was the same person killed in a fixed wing crash on April 3, 1970 while then a member of the 219th Aviation Company Headhunters". The latter Willie had been promoted to Captain during flight training. I'm trying to pin this down for a person writing a book on members of B Battery

5th/27th during its time in Vietnam. This battery suffered 9 KIAs that we honor at our reunions. We would like to add Willie

the aviator to our honor roll if we can confirm he was the same individual that served with us. He definitely deserves remembering in this book. Thank you. "

8/17/2014 23:31 Francis A. Doherty [email protected] For Paul A. Marchessault: Willie Ridgeway was my platoon leader (2nd plt.) in Kontum. I was not present when Willie's crash occurred, but I was present for his memorial service. I also made a rubbing of his name on a visit to the Vietnam Memorial and gave it to a mutual friend, Bob Adams, a FAC with the 21st RAC and a contemporary at Western / Delta Airlines.
